I've had 2 sports injuries from soccer/swimming (yes, swimming can be hard on the knees) and recommend you go see your doctor. You only have one pair of knees. I don't have anything on the cartilage of mine because I didn't insist on getting help, and ended up needing surguries and was off my knee a lot longer.
Just my 2 cents. |

I literally LOL'd at a lot of the replies here, but on a possibly more helpful note, my swim coach a few years ago read off from a list calories burnt per hour for various physical activities, and sex was one of them. Now I wouldn't swear on it, but sex she said was a strenuous activity and ~615kcal/hour. Now I know we can't all go at it like THAT for an hour. But if you're moving and feeling the burn (among other things |

my parents don't know I'm on birth control, its a pill. and at this point a daily pill is all i really feel comfortable with. I guess I'm wondering if there's a better birth control I could take? I can be pretty sensitive to medicine.. and I really don't want to have to juggle ADHD meds.. as the ones I'm on are pretty expensive.. and the other options I have left aren't that much better. I can't really afford to eat off campus food. I guess I'm just more wondering if my body will stop getting so hungry? or if there is a different BC that people here use that doesn't make them ravenous?? |

After about 3 months the weight loss will level out and in the long run you gain most of it back over time. The appetite effect will go away once you get used to taking the meds regularly. As long as you take them daily your appetite WILL come back. Things that help until then is eating a big breakfast before taking them. Also, something a lot of doctors fail to mention, is that citric acid can decrease the effectiveness of adderall when ingested 2 hours before or after consuming adderall. something to keep in mind. But long run, don't worry, what you've lost so far will come back. For now just focus on making sure you're eating at least bare minimum enough, and try not to stress out too much over it. :) |

Yeah, I'm on some prescriptions that can both cause weight loss.. but I looked at the graphs from studies done on it and the weight usually is over halfway back by the end of 3 months.. and I've been on them more than that. And yeah, its definitely slowed down. The only other thing I can really think of to account for it is that, for the most part, I have pretty bad insomnia (hence me posting here at 3am my time) and even though I'm usually trying to sleep in one way or another, with 8am classes I probably move, on average, more than most people do durning "resting hours". I know long term it could have an effect.. but it in no way accounts for this. I mean, I'm not unhappy with the loss. But I've never felt 'jiggly' before (I really have no clue how else to word it). If it is medically related (my dad has hypothyroidism, but not hyperthyroidism) are there any things other than weight loss I should look out for? |

Yeah I'm eating enough. At least I think so... Probably between 1700-2000 on most days. There have been days where I've definitely probably eaten closer to 2500-3000 though between grandparents mailing cookies and getting cold stone.... I might have been a little under when I had the flue recently, but that didn't last long. I eat whenever I'm hungry, I can't count calories very easily as I live in dorm. And over 3lbs a week doesn't sound right at all. Maybe I'm getting my starting date mixed up or something. Or I'm just too tired to do simple math. Regardless.. I know I've been losing a lot father than I should be - which has been reasonable cause for concern. As for the rate I've been losing... earlier this week or so I made a post showing a bit of concern over it.. for the most part people just said to go with it. Could it just be that since I'm smaller my tummy doesn't have the fat on it to prevent it from crinkling up more when I move, so I just feel jiggly? If its all in my head I'm more than ok with that. It just feels really weird, thats all. I know I eat a lot of eggs, orange juice, whole grains, and potatoes in the cafeteria.. I've never regularly eaten eggs before.. so I've wondered about that. Its sort of been driving me crazy. |

| Weight Loss | Cellulite--Does it ever go away? | Mar 07 2009 10:41 (UTC) |

In my experience, yeah, it does go away. When I was younger, and ate VERY unhealthily and didn't really exercise I had a ton of it on my thighs. After getting very ill, and having my appendix removed I realized I was killing myself with my lifestyle, and was worried about my families eating habits. To make sure healthier food was in the house, I went vegan. I'm not vegan anymore, but the cellulite is more or less gone. And when I was vegan, it WAS gone. I'm sure not 100% but at the time I was in great shape, had gotten my weight more than under control, and the chunky parts just weren't there anymore. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I do think that a long term diet change can help you get rid of the pesky stuff (I was vegan for 5 years, and only stopped due to depression/dorm life. honestly, I miss it). To this day I still eat a lot of foods that are vegan or very close. I'm in no way a vegetarian though. I love me my sushi and red meat. When I gained my weight back from overeating and living off of ice cream some of the cellulite did sort of come back.. but honestly there isn't much of it. Definitely not enough to bother me. |

CBT can help, but only so much if there's a real, and severe problem. I know when I first did CBT I felt pretty silly, but since psychology has a lot to do on attitude and outlook I let myself be open and serious about it, even if it sort of seemed weird. It can definitely help you balance out your emotions and get a handle on controlling your psychological state. However, in more severe cases, where the person is unable to really function in day to day life (like I was and you are) I do believe its overall effect can only do so much. But I suppose it depends on the person. Honestly, I used to be very anti medicine most of my life, and while I was able to function off of medicine for most of it, I was barely able to, and it was miserable. I do understand the anxiety problems, I really do. Mine got very bad before I got back on medicines. And while the medicine might not have worked right away for me, there was definitely at least a subtle but important differences within the first week. My meds didn't start working at full capacity for a good long while, but even that little bit in the beginning was enough to let me start to get back on track. |

I've had some cbt before. I guess it did help some. Honestly, at the time all I really needed were some anti-depressants and somebody to talk to. So yeah, it helped. However, it can't fix a chemical balancing problem in your brain. It can help you learn to better cope with anxiety/depression/ect though. I tried explaining this before, but I'm not sure if my point got accross - everybody reacts to anti depressants differently(just as everybody may show their depression in a different manner). Depression can even cause anxiety/phobic like symptoms. Just because Citalopram (aka Celexa) did not work for you does not mean other anti depressants won't. I cannot stress this enough. As I said before, finding the right anti depressant for you can take a little bit of trial and error with medicines. Switching medicines isn't a big deal, so try not to stress so much over it. Just make sure that you keep a list of prescriptions that don't work for you (like citalopram/celexa) so that if you ever switch doctors they know what you can't take. Your reaction to citalopram is not common, and there are many other types of anti depressants that work differently. Once bad experience in no way means you'll have other bad experiences with other medicines! Here is a link that gives a general overview of the different types of antidepressant medications and what you can expect with taking antidepressants and other medications for mental health. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/6202 6.php Hope this helps! |

How people react to medicines can vary from person to person. Also, the dose has to be taken into concern too. How many mg of generic Celexa are you taking when you do take your meds? From what it sounds like, I'd switch medications, and if you're new to using anti depressants sometimes it can take a while to find what works for you. What works for one person might not work well for the next. I know I'm personally allergic or hyper sensitive to a lot of medications, in particular anti-depressants. I went through Zoloft, Paxil, Wellbutrin, Lexapro, and many others that I don't recall before I found out Celexa worked for me without causing me a ton of terrible side effects (I fainted with Lexapro, which is strange considering Celexa and Lexapro are practically the same thing). Trying medicines is like a juggling act with your brain, it can be really frustrating sometimes, and is not often a quick fix. Also, sometimes starting on too high a dose can cause problems (like anxiety attacks). I'd listen to your doctor, but remember you know your body best and what is and isn't good for you. Don't give up on finding a match that works for you though! Sometimes a combination of medicines is just what you need too. It can take time though, so until you find your body's best fit, try to get into a regular routine, even if its really hard, and get back to work if you're able to. Dealing with depression can be a long, hard road. I've been on medications off and on since around 10 years old. Its only been in the bast few months, 10 years later, that I think I've finally found the perfect match for handling my depression and add (I take a combination of celexa, strattera, and adderall.. the strattera for me makes all the difference in the effectiveness of both my adderall and celexa doses). A lot of times though the medicine that works for you will still have some side effects, it just depends what you're willing to put up with. When I first started strattera I could barely eat and threw up the first time I took it. After a while my stomach got used to it. Now I just get dehydrated really easily, but after practically dropping out of school and doing nothing for a year and a half, the effort is worth it. I'm now back in school, loving it, and with the honor role grades I used to have. Just don't give up and keep going! Eventually you'll find what you need. |

I also feel like my stomach has been getting bigger, and from looking around it seems like other people feel this way too once they've started to lose a decent amount of weight. Maybe its because our stomach has the most padding so its the slowest to noticably shrink? So far I've been losing weight without intentional exercise.. but I'm starting to think I'm going to have to start going to a gym to try and tone some parts up (my butt in particular) so more than my tummy has 'definition' lol! |

My sister was recently diagnosed with celiac disease. I know that when I cook for her I just find normal recipies and substitute anything with normal flour with chickpea (sp?) flour.. which seems to work really well at replacing the binding qualities of gluten. She loves japanese food, so when I'm back home I'm going to try my hand at making homeade udon noodles for her. Honestly, chickpea flour is really amazing for baking, but I was wondering if anybody knows of any other good substitutes for flour? I know rice is pretty popular, but sometimes recipies need something a bit closer to gluten it seems. Any advice? |

How long have you been on the medication? I'm currently on 20mg Adderall XR and 80mg Strattera for my ADD. Eventually the appetite thing goes away and you want to eat again, a good way of combatting it is to eat a decent amount early on in the day before you take your medicine (it helps!) or after. Recently some people did a studdy of how weight was affected by ADD meds, and the trend seemed to be that after 3 months most of the weight they had lost initially they gained back. If you take it regularly for a while, and don't skip days, your appetite will return to normal. And eating early on really helps :) I hope this answered your question, if you have any more about ADD meds feel free to ask me, I'm experienced. :P |

@mkuls - Before I went to school I was counting pretty carefully through CC and was losing, but not nearly as much as I am right now, I guess from being on here it sort of sent up a red flag, and thanks for the encouragement. I tried counting them here but decided to just wing it like I did last time at school and if the scale doesn't go up I'd be good. What happened was not what I expected needless to say. I think the main reason I ended up just eating the huge breakfast is because when I was eating a ton of smaller meals throughout the day at home I was always stressed about how much I should eat, or what, even though I was eating balanced carbs/protein/fats before I started keeping track of them. That and the smaller meal plans here are a lot cheaper.. and I like to try to get my moneys worth.. I learned that from the last time I ate on campus and ended the semester with over 400$ in unspent food money =/ Thank you all very much for the opinions and helpful feedback! :D |

Alright, that makes me feel a bit better. What I'm doing right now is easy, and honestly I could eat like this forever and probably not think twice. I guess I just worry, maybe if I am a little low some days I make up for it on other days? During these 45 or so days I've had parties, a few days of eating a ton (following a night of drinking a ton) and I guess I just find it pretty alarming that I can still lose even though I do those sort of things on occasion. Food group wise I think I'm doing ok I have a really balanced breakfast, which is my main meal every morning, but that also means a lot of egg so I've sort of been worried about cholesterol. French fries have been my achilles heel at dinner though. I eat them a lot.. mostly because everything else is pretty unappatizing. I love potatoes too.. I have some form of them at every meal. I think for the most part though I'm balancing everything out. So then its ok that I'm losing, on average, more than 2lbs a week? Because so far, rounding up, it says I've lost 20lbs.. which is pretty much a lb every 2-3 days... most of which has happened since I got here, so its actually even more. Could my metabolism just be really high? I know in a physiology/anatomy class I took about 4 years back everybody did a bmr test thingy for it and mine was 1950, but I was doing a lot of swimming back then. Maybe some of it is water? I try and drink a lot (12 cups or so of water/day) but I get dehydrated pretty easily.. but when I try to drink more the scale just goes down more o_0 |

Yeah, I know my breakfast is big.. but its the only meal of the day where I actually feel like eating.. that or I eat a smaller breakfast and pretty much force myself to eat food the rest of the day =/ Other than that I pretty much graze throughout the day. As for the change in my routine, a lot of it has to do with me not living with my parents. On my own I make a lot of healthier, active choices. My problem with weight pretty much goes away on its own when I'm choosing what type of food is available for me to eat and so forth. With my parents there is very little variety and a lot of it is frozen food, fast food, or pizza. Back in high school I was loosing weight too, just being unemployed and out of school for a while is sort of like asking to get a bit heavy. At home I had the time to exercise an hour a day, even if it was walking the dog, but that was literally all I did. Here I don't dedicate time to exercise, but I'm walking all over the place and up and down stairs.. so my guess is that it evens out. As for part of my breakfast being stored as fat.. I don't really mind that since throughout the rest of the day that fat will get used back up. I guess my concern is that I'm losing a bit more than 2lbs a week. Can my body naturally be ok with losing that much? Just the numbers don't really seem to add up. Honestly it defies my understanding how I could be losing so much. |

I've yet to have a real proper boyfriend, and in high school I didn't even really bother. Honestly, don't go out looking for a boyfriend. I understand the concept of being lonely, but when it comes to liking somebody, and feeling that odd spark inside you when you see/talk/type to them or whatever you do that makes patience worth it. I was reading in my psychology book just the other night in fact that it isn't until the early 20s that we genetically and mentally start to strive and attempt to form intimtate, meaningful, and longlasting relationships. Brain developement wise we aren't really ready for it before then, although I'm sure some do as everybody's different, and others try. College is really different than high school, its a huge learning experience and a ton of fun. Either way, don't feel peer pressured into starting to get into relationships, eventually, when you're old/mature/whatever enough you'll be thinking about things differently - maybe that's whats starting to happen right now. Feel free to talk to people online, but don't do it with the intent of finding a relationship, in my experience love is something that tends to take you off guard and by surprise, not something that can really be sought out. |

| Weight Loss | Sugar? | Feb 25 2009 17:48 (UTC) |
|
I have a real sweet tooth, but comparing my weight loss previously when I consumed tons of natural sugars to now, where I consume practically none in comparison, not only have I noticed I don't have to pee nearly as much (which really is awesome) but the weight loss has been pretty easy and I never crave foods/don't really get hungry. Foods also are a lot more satisfying. The last time I was in school I probably got most of my calories from carbonated all natural/real fruit drinks or naked juice. This time around all I really drink is water, and its a lot easier. Also, consuming a lot of sugar makes your body demand a lot more water. I don't know if it applies to you, but I'd try using your body to tell you if you're having too much sugar a day through your bladder and how often you have to use the restroom. I went from having to go 7 or so times a day to 3.. and my blood sugar wasn't high or anything (naturally I have pretty low blood sugar, almost as low as my friend with GSD). Hope this helps! |

For those who may want to know. I went to get checked out about my concerns and ask a doctor about it. More or less, since my worst bruises I could remember how I got them do heal and seem to have been decreasing and my liver seems ok, I was pretty much told to keep an eye on things and if any other symptoms make themselves known or the bruising starts to get worse to go back to the doctors.

My regular doctor is currently 2 states away, but I have pretty good insurance, so I'll check with the health clinic until I can set up meeting a doctor through insurance. I know Strattera can in some rare cases cause some sever liver problems, but I've been so busy as of late I forgot completely about it.. I haven't noticed any jaundice or anything, but I've been so busy lately I honestly haven't thought to check. I tend to be pretty sensitive to medicines. Thank you very much for bringing my liver back to my attention! As for the spot on my arm where I gave blood a few days ago.. its starting to bruise now.. which seems late to me. I'm sure the drinking doesn't help, but I specifically asked my doctor before leaving for university again whether or not I could occasionally binge drink every so often at parties and such, which he said should be fine as long as I don't do it too regularly. The liver thing was a smart thing to point out. You're useful as always gi-jane, what would we do without you! |

Thank you for the reply shorty! I wasn't aware that stress could affect bruising, or at least I hadn't considered it. I've been a ton more stressed than usual lately too (for understandable reasons). I'm not sure if my stress level will be changing any time soon though, but I'll try to remember to take one of the multivitamins I have semi-regularly (I dislike swallowing them) and see if that helps. If stress can make a difference though, that's probably a pretty big factor in my sudden bruising problem. Thank you very much! |

I never take asprin at all. And yes, by quarters I mean the drinking game. :P I expect to get a bruise or two from drinking, that much is normal. Honestly the one I got on my leg was what really alarmed me - it looked terrible! I don't drink regularly either, so I know there's no way it could account for all the bruising I've been having. I was sort of worried it might be a clotting problem, but since I just recently donated blood and its healed just fine. If it keeps up I'm going to drop by my university's health clinic and ask. Until then though, does anybody know of any vitamins/foods/lifestyle changes that could possibly help out or improve my body's ability to prevent bruising? A lot of the bruises don't necessarily show up quickly either. Sometimes it takes a day or two for them to start to really look terrible. And thanks for all the helpful feedback! |

Thank you for your concern jalanday, but I highly doubt I have sleep apnea, and don't think any sleeping disorders are effecting my ability to work out. I'm diagnosed with insomnia and am used to general daily fatigue from being unable to get enough sleep at night. The fact that this is very different from just being tired, and is a lot more similar to exaustion in general was what sparked my initial concern. I haven't worked out since, but I'm going to try some light exercise later this week and see how it goes. I donated blood today though so we'll see what happens. Thank you all very much for your helpful replies. |

I remember the first time I looked up the calorie count in a Jack in the Box shake.. I nearly fell over. Its like 1000 or something insane for a small. =/ You really get no mercy when eating fast food. And honestly going over for a day or two isn't going to kill you. I expected to gain a ton of weight this weekend (2 days of drinking and parties can do that to you) and was really surprised when I weighed in the same this morning after eating nothing remotely good for me over the past 3 days. I'm dehydrated and have been drinking a ton of water too. Even your body will give you breaks sometimes. Be nice to yourself. Just eat healthy and light the rest of the day, and if you feel you need a little extra food to hold you over, don't deny yourself what your body needs. :) |

I've sort of been wondering about altitude, as I'm sure I'm higher up here than I used to be back home. I've had altitude sickness before while hiking so it wouldn't surprise me. However it didn't really feel the same which is probably why I've been a little worried. I climb 3 flights of stairs multiple times a day to get to and from class and from my room. If it is altitude related, how long would it be before I get my stamina that I love so much back? |

| Weight Loss | bra bulge? | Feb 13 2009 04:58 (UTC) |

I know a friend who had a similar problem. Unfortunately a lot of that stuff is genetic, so if the ladies in your family also have rather large breasts even if you lose a lot of weight they might not go down in size all that much. Even though your body takes a little fat from all parts of your body, and you can't target to lose in certain areas, I think for women the chest can be a bit of an exception. However even it isn't immune to shrinking in size. It sounds like your bras might not fit your chest shape right too, and the cups go in too much, even if they're the right size. I know I have bras that do that, and its because of how they're cut. I'd look into finding a brand that fits your shape best. Sometimes I think my chest has a mind of its own. I have a history of yo-yoing and sometimes my chest would go down a lot and other times it didn't seem to want to budge in size. I've been from B-DD at all different weights! Currently I'm in the high C low D range. It sounds like your bra is probably a little too small for you. Have you tried tightening your straps? I know that has helped me when they feel lose in the front. Good luck and happy losing! Hope this helps! |

| Foods | how many meals do YOU eat a day? | Feb 13 2009 04:46 (UTC) |

I really only eat about 2 meals a day. At home I can argue 3, but dinner usually ends up having a calorie amount that is more equivalent with a large snack. Right now in college I eat a huge breakfast (pretty much as much as I feel like) early in the morning then don't really eat again until dinner. Honestly I'm just not that hungry until then. Some days I am, so I keep some yummy, ~200kcal nutrition/protein bars in my backpack and have a big box of them in my room. I eat when I'm hungry and don't when I'm not. Every couple of days I'll have a really big dinner because I find myself really hungry. I know it should be more balanced, but if I'm eating around 700ckal at breakfast (no joke its the only food I really like) and a lite, healthy dinner where I try to hit 500kcal, with snacks as needed I think I'm doing fine. I probably eat maintinence once/twice a week in the form of delicious italian leftovers or whatever tickles my fancy. I'm happy and I don't even feel like I'm doing anything different! The only reason I gained weight was from lots of drinking and eating out of boredom. I have gum now. :) |

I just don't want to make the same mistake twice. The first time it wasn't conscious but I'm probably worrying too much. I'll try to focus less on numbers and more on balance.
