Weight Loss Scales... Sep 02 2008

Use one scale only.  Even if it is not correct to 3 decimal places, if you use the same one every time, then you will have an accurate weight over the long run.  I have a Taylor glass scale with digital readout, accurate to one decimal place.  PS- scales do not lie, only people lie to themselves.  I would suggest you stop obsessing over what your scales are showing you, and put that energy into working out more.

my biggest problem is my stomach. its really flabby and not toned at all, and if i could just lose weight there i would be really happy. thats really all i want :(

How many crunches a day are you doing?  How far do you run each day?  Do you use several different isolation crunches, or just standard crunches?   Do you work your obliques as hard as your upper and lower abdominal muscles?  Are you eating at least 1800-2000 calories a day?  Are you achieving a 800-1000 calorie deficit through exercise expenditures?  how much cardio vs. resistance training are you doing each week?  If you are not doing all of these things, then you don't really want a tight tummy, or to be fit, you are just being lazy and whining about something you are not willing to work for.  Sorry for being blunt, but thats what it takes.

Weight Loss Why am I so hungry? May 13 2008

I have been trying to stick to 1400-1500 cal a day for about 2 months now.  Some days that amount or less is just fine and I'm not hungry, but other days (like TODAY!) I eat 2000+ calories!  It's all "good food" and I really am hungry, but this is ridiculous.  I don't change my protein v. carbs v. fat intake and my exercise stays constant.  Any ideas?

Could be you are not drinking enough water?  Dehydration can mimmick hunger pains.  Try gulping down a glass of water or two, wait 15 mins. and see if you are still hungry.

If I eat 1300 calories in a day and burn 2400 calories in a day obviously my deficit is larger than 1000, but isn't that ok if I am obese? I seem to flip flop on where I stand with this.

Right now, my average daily calorie intake is 2400 calories.  My diet is comparatively rich as well.   I used to weight 320, 4 years ago.  Today I weight 226.  I burn on average, 530 cals a day through cardio (hiking/brisk walking).  I list myself as sedentary, even though I have a somewhat physical job.  By doing this, I have a built in insurance.  I have lost, since Mar 17/08, 23 pounds.  It is a matter of finding a level of eating that makes you feel satisfied, and achieving deficit through exercise, not deprivation.  Your sympathetic nervous system will sabotage you if you try to achieve you weight loss through low level starvation.  It will not let you starve yourself to death. I suggest you eat 1800-2000 calories a day, and ramp up the activity level so you show no more than a 1000 deficit per day.  That's 2 lbs. a week.  The key is not to lose fast, but lose steadily and predictably.

Easiest way to determine ALL food values is to buy a high quality, digital foodscale, which can be had on Ebay for as little as $10.  No guessing ever.

Hey Sam;

In the future, never do day to day comparisons, do week to week and month to month.  Weigh yourself every day if you want, but compare Thursday to Thursday or Monday to Monday, March 25 to April 25, etc.  Spikes in both gains and losses day to day are misleading and can be very discouraging, even though they have little to do with ACTUAL gains and losses.  I liken it to driving, if you look just 20 ft. in front of your car and nowhere else, you will be reacting too quickly and with poor judgement to things that are popping up right in front of you.  But if you drive looking ahead a 1/4 mile, you will see the bigger picture and things that had been popping up and causing you to act hastily will become part of that bigger picture and won't faze you, allowing you to take them in stride.  I am going to get up on my soapbox here for a minute and pontificate.  The entire 'diet' industry is perpetuated by people's need for instant gratification.  People want to lose weight NOW. So up pops an industry promising just that.  "Quick weight loss!"  "Lose 10 pounds in 10 days!!"  "Be ready for swimsuit season, drop that gut FAST!!"  The problem is, millions of years of evolutionary necessity have created bodies that do not lose or gain weight quickly.  There are lots of programs that exploit our bodies reaction to the onset of starvation (rapid water loss) to make us think that losing weight is a quick endeavor.   But in order to lose weight permanently, it is a slow, applied process requiring discipline and long term commitment.  Any other method will ultimately fail in the long run.

Man, am I long winded sometimes.  LOL!

both. actually, when I was obese, I used to eat junk but not that much. also, my gallbladder kills me after the binge.

Before I started to CC, I used to eat a lot of food, healthy and unhealthy. but now, I binge only on junk.

Today I ate nuts A LOT. I also ate knish :( trail mix, a piece of bread from Cosi, a can of hummus, a pack of small whole wheat pita, two biscuits from Starbucks ( 140 each).

Look at your typical menu, it is not good.  Calories are WAY too low, hardly any fats, very low protein.  You need to drastically reconsider your intake.  I know this website says the females can go on 1200 calories a day.  I think its too low.  you should be eating 1500-2000 a day.  You won't lose weight in the starvation mode you are in, and you will binge.  You should be achieving your deficit through activity, not depravation.  PS- I am not a doctor, but I think the pain you are experiencing is more likely over-satiation. Internal organs rarely relay pain from their source.  If you are eating like a bird most days, then shovel in a truckload of junk, your stomach is going to protest.  Use this website to track HEALTHY habits, not to reinforce bad ones, ie., self starvation, bingeing, purging.  I really feel sorry for most women, what the media and popular culture is doing to a lot of you is criminal.

Don't worry about day to day weights, you can hold up to 5 lbs. of water easily in any 24 hr period.  Use the 'green' line on your weight graph to get your actual weight.   Also, make sure you weigh yourself at the same time each day, under the same conditions.  A large glass of water can weigh 1 pound.  A meal can weigh 2 lbs.  I always weigh in in the morning before breakfast.  Worrying about your weight from one day to the next is pointless.  Look at your weight trends over weeks and months.  Weight loss is not a speed sport.

Just wondering about people's success with losing 50 pounds...or 30 or 60 or 100!!  I know that everyone is different, and just thought it would be interesting to know the time-table for different weight loss amounts and the time period you acheived it in.

Thanks

In the last two months of 04 and the first 3 months of 05 I lost 111 lbs. through the Bernstein program.  Problem was, that was way too fast and in a manner which was not sustainable.  It was a starvation diet, I was eating 3 chicken salads a day (without dressing) and 3 fruits, 3 melaba toasts with no-fat cream cheese and minimum 4 litres of water.  So, once I stopped Brenstein (it was $600 month) I gradually put back on over 40 lbs.  I caught myself this past Christmas approaching 250 lbs. again and vowed to regain control.  This website was a real find.  It has allowed me to lose over 10 lbs. over this past month through control of intake thanks to food logs and control of burn thanks to activity logs.  I eat between 2200-2400 calories a day and have learned that deprivation is NOT the way to lose weight.  I try to profess this wisdom, but even some  people on here don't want to hear it and continue to torture themselves.  It is proper choices, applied exercise program (I currently walk about 7 miles per day @ 4 mph) and realizing a few things. One, a bad day is no reason to throw in the towel.  I have had a couple of 4000 calorie days where I seemed to put on 5 lbs. overnight, but thanks to the 'green line' on the weight graph, I realize that water weight is not bodyweight. Secondly, trying to lose weight by deprivation rather than balancing is doomed to failure.  All these people trying to operate with restriction based deficits of 600 or more calories rather than expenditure deficits are hurting themselves.  I feel confident that this time, because I really do not deprive myself, that I will succeed so long as I apply what I have learned here and stick to my new plan.  Good luck to everyone in achieving health and fitness!!

Yes, I realize that you can deduce your deficit, but it would be very handy to have a daily/weekly running total that could be instantly accessed so that it would be easier to plan daily food requirements or exercise requirements on the fly as things change.  Eliminates the need to track these with pen and paper.  Thanks for the input, though, this may not have been apparent to others.  I did take your suggestion to submit this to the powers that be here.

However, here's a question for you- why did my lungs hurt so so much?! They really stang and didn't stop stinging for ages after! Anyone else have this problem?

xxxLaughing

That is a result of the intense amount of blood being pumped through your lungs.  You body is not used to that level of pulmonary activity.  As your cardio health improves, this will decrease.  The important thing is to keep doing activities that challenge your cardio health!!  Congrats!!

iamme1270, thanks  for the suggestion, I will give it a try. i saw some creams for muscle soreness. should I buy any of those?

I do a whole body workout because I lift light weight. I start with a warm up on the treadmill.

It is a relief to know that it is better to take a break between cardio workouts. Tonight, I did that because of my quads was hurting.

Sorry, I have a funny question. when I do weight training, sometimes, I taste something strange and I feel I need to drink a lot of water. what is that?

Thanks Melkor for the article.

The need to drink a lot of water is your body screaming "DRINK SOME F*&^%$G WATER PLEASE!!!!"  :)  The taste could be ketones in your system because your body is burning fat cells.  Or it could just be a result of breathing heavily through your mouth while working out.

Any suggestions?

Also, I would like to ask another question.

If I do elliptical and treadmill same day, can I take 10 minutes rest in between? or it is not a good idea?

Thanks in advance.

1) Sounds like you are hitting quads too hard, reduce weight or reps.  Also drink LOTS of water, I mean lots.  This will aid in muscle efficiency and flush toxins which result as a byproduct of muscle strain.

2) As long as you are in your burn zone for 20 uninterrupted minutes or more for cardio, a 10 minute break is fine.

I have lost over 100 pounds, but can't seem to do anything but little increases for the past two weeks, with very little loss the month before.  I think I am doing okay, but maybe someone else can run my numbers to see what I am doing wrong.

35 years old and female, 210ish pounds, 5 foot 11 or so.

I work out 5-6 days a week, burning 800 calories (sometimes more) in cardio, and then lift weights for about 15 minutes or so.  My job will be over in about five days, so I will be at a fairly sedentary status, with little bursts of activity occasionally.

I eat 1800 calories a day, which is roughly my BMR.  I don't eat  a lot of meat or salt, and live mostly on veggies and dairy with a bunch of beans and grains thrown in.  I eat two squares of 85% chocolate on most nights.

I still have about 50 pounds to lose, so I hope my loss isn't slowing down already!

Thanks for any help.  I do appreciate it.

I would up calories to at least 2300 a day, you are quite tall.  Your workout schedule is pretty intense, your body is probably in starvation mode due to this.  If you are only ingesting 1800 calories a day, and you are burning 800 most days on cardio alone, your deficit is WAY too big, like probably about 2000-3000, where 1000 is the highest you want it to be if you want to avoid starvation mode, 500-800 for optimal weight control.

Sorry for the rant, but GEEEZ.....

I like spicy foods - so last night I added some chili oil to my mom's homemade chicken soup (it was a little bland). Well, I never thought to look at the label because usually I put in Louisiana Hot Sauce and that is 0 calories. After mixing the oil in with the soup, I take a look at the nutritional label on the oil .... 120 CALORIES FOR 1 TBSP. Surprised

Do you know what I could eat for 120 calories? Yell

    - slim fast mint crisp bar

    - slice of bread with butter/ jelly

    - a small bagel

    - low fat ice cream

    - cereal (dry)

    - handful of nuts

    - jelly beans

    - chips and salsa

Anyway, you see what I mean.... 120 calories wasted on 1 darn tbsp of oil while I could have enjoyed something else instead that had a crunch to it.

I really could have done without the oil and refuse to have it again - I guess it is back to Louisiana Hot Sauce for all foods.

And with the scale totally heading in the wrong direction this week, this was just the last little thing I needed. Frown

Oils are not bad for you.  You have been brainwashed by the nutritional holocaust of the 1970's.  Do not feel bad about this.  Did you enjoy the soup more?  That's what counts, sustainability. You need fats to operate properly.  Almost all of your 'healthy' alternatives were high carb choices.  Excessive carbs are the real killer.

Thanks for the help. I totally get I need them, I'm just a bit confused about how to track the whole percentage thing of each. I make sure I eat healthy things (eggs, leafy greens, lean meat, fruits and veggies...) and the website says for the 5 days I've been on it that I am taking in 19% protein (which sounds low compared to what you all have said), 45% fat and 32% carbohydrate. What should I eat more/less of to get to the percentages you all mentioned? anybody?

And also, one of you said you take 30 carb and 45 fat and someone else said 45 carb 30 fat, which is better for a 21 yr old, 5'10, 135 lbs girly?

Its really a matter of figuring out what is right for you.  For me, 45% fats is allowing me to lose weight and not feel deprived.  Maybe if or when I plateau, I'll adjust those numbers, but it is really a matter of tracking yourself for a few weeks and tinkering to see what best suits you.  Most people spend their whole life not realizing what they are putting into their body.  So now you have the diagnostic tool in the form of this website, now you have to hone your expertise on what makes YOUR body tick.

So I've been looking into all the foods I'm eating which are basically, non-processed things. Fish, leafy greens, veggies, meats, nuts, etc. However even a hard-boiled egg has fat and carbs. I'm guessing carbs are worse, but... why? What's really the difference?

Carbs cause insulin to be released in order to regulate blood sugar levels.  Any carbs (sugars) that are not used for energy right away are converted to glycogen and stored in muscle tissue for future energy expenditures.  Any excess sugars over and above these levels are then converted to body fat.  But regular consumption of high levels of carbs can cause a person to become insulin resistant.  More insulin is then required to perform housekeeping in the blood sugar department.  This causes less carbs to be used as energy and more to be stored as fat.  Too much of any one of the three components of food is not good.  Personally, I consume about 30% from carbs, 45% from fat and 25% from protein.  I am losing weight slowly and safely and my diet is one that is sustainable.  I tried Atkins, didn't work for me, I felt horrible, no energy.  I tried Bernstein, worked while I was on it, but at over $600 per month and a very boring, limited diet, not very sustainable.  Calorie counting works for me because I am denied nothing, can compensate for slip-ups with exercise and doesn't cost a penny.

I used to go to the gym around 5 times a week, but I hate going when I know other people are there. It sounds silly, and I know they're only focused on themselves, but I hate it when I see the tiny and perfectly fit girls working out near me. I enjoy exercising, but I hate feeling so much larger than everyone else around me. :X

Go walking.  Get an iPod and just plug in and go.  You don't have to be slamming weights or running on a treadmill, in fact, the law of diminishing returns would support JUST walking for weight control, it is far more effective as you can do it longer.  The longer you can be in your target HR zone, the better.

As for the binge.. is it alright just to eat 500 more calories for the rest of the day? or?

Your daily caloric allowance is just that, daily allowance.  If you have blown by your daily allotment, just try to drink water for the rest of the day, move around as much as possible and pych yourself up for the next day.

Update: my parents are going to a restaurant in about half an hour.. 30 mins from now. I dont' know what to do. Should I go? I know they'll look at me a little bit silly if I refuse.. and our family NEVER eats out together. but If I go I'm afraid I'll eat too much then be tempted to throw it back up again.

Its important to let people around you know you are working on becoming more healthy and that restaurants are a notorious stumbling block for health conscious people.  If they know, with luck, they will support you without putting conditions on support.  It would be a good idea to tell them about your ED as well, so they know it is a serious matter, and that what may seem insignificant to them is a mountain to you.

New Members Newbie Question - Fiber Apr 06 2008
00:08 (UTC)

A good way to top up fibre is to go to a health food store and grab a package of ground psyllium seed husks, they provide a nice wallop of both soluble and insoluble&nbs p;fibres with the added benefit of absorbing toxins, building smooth muscle strength of the large intestine, alleviating in IBS type symtoms and keeping one VERY regular.  I take mine at bedtime and as they say, it provides fast, effective relief from constipation.  LOL!!!  It is NOT a laxitive, and because it increases bulk in stool, this allows more bile to be disposed of, reulting in a lower LDL cholesterol level.  Its win, win, win.  Tastes awful, though, more a texture thing.  But is kicks Metamucal's ass as a dietary fibre supplement.  (Metamucal is a psyllium supplement, but has sugar and less psyllium.)

I would suggest doing the exact same thing physically, but try eating your 2100 cals/day for three weeks, see what happens.  It sounds like you are not eating enough, so your body, especially because of your past ED, is hoarding, probably at the expense of lean muscle tissue.  How do you feel?  Like, energetic, or drained?  If you are not comfortable going up to 2100, try even a full 1800 for the three weeks, see if your numbers move.

Hello all,

I am really over weight due to issues with my health. I am just starting to loose weight. I am very new to this exercise thing.  And I have been hiking on the weekend since Easter and walking in the park near my office on my lunch hour. Easter weekend I hiked/Climbed south mountain trail here in Phoenix on a dare. It was a tough climb There where some points I had to use hand holds int he rock. but I felt a serious sence of accomplishment. but I seriously hurt all last week. I was starting to feel better so this weekend the kids and I went camping and I did a 2.5 mike hike in the Superstition Mts. Again I am really sore but I am still doing my park walk. I have 2 question.

1st a co worker that overdoing my exercise when I start out can be harmful to my weight loss is this true?

2nd is there anything I can do so that I don't hurt so bad after hiking because I really enjoy it but don't want to pay for it all week after I go.

I can't believe nobody mentioned water!!  Drink LOTS of it, it is the main transport for toxins out of your muscles.  The soreness is a combination of tearing and toxin build up, toxins are a byproduct of the metabolic function of muscle cells.  Drink lots of water and you will allow your body to dump those toxins.  8 cups a day minimum. And the strolls you are taking will also help, the lymphatic system which is also responsible for waste removal is powered by activity.

No matter how I try, it just seems that I am not dropping the lbs. What am I doing wrong? Am I eating too much? Am I not eating enough. I am 28 years old. I started cc on February 8th, 2008 and I have only lost 8 tiny lbs. I have my activity level set to light even though I work in a fast food restaurant, and I walk all day long. I do crunches and leg lifts for about 30 minutes a day. I am 5ft. 5 in. tall. The eat meter says that I only burn around 2500 calories daily, and that I can eat around 2150 calories. I usually try to eat around 1800-1900 calories daily. I am trying to understand. Do  I add my activity to the burn meter's total, or is it already calculated. Please help me to get the lbs. off. Thank you in advance....

8 lbs. in one month is very good, that is 96 lbs in one year.  If you don't get out of the 'I want to be thin right now, Dammit!' mindset, you are setting yourself up for failure.  Lose that bad habit now, and revel in the fact that you had such a successful first month, you have set the bar high for yourself.  But don't become discouraged if you have an occasional gain.  Use the green line on your weight chart, it is more representative of your true weight.  You are better off eating the 2150 calories and using physical activity to increase the deficit.  The less you eat, the slower you burn, as your metabolism slows to conserve for the decreased energy input.  The more you eat and compensate with increased activity, the faster you burn, as you body leaves starvation mode and becomes less efficient.

1.  Get rid of tempting high carb snacks.  They will getcha every time.  Until you can control your binge attacks (which will come with practice), they are NO-NO no. 1!!

2. This works.  I swear. I have both quit smoking, and lost weight.  When you feel the urge to attack the snack, walk around the block at least once.  This serves three purposes. i) it elevates your metabolism which in turn, decreases your hunger. ii) trains your body to expect physical activity when a craving hits and iii) gives you a tangible weapon to combat the craving.  Walk more than 1 block if you want to.

3. Drink at least 8 cups of water a day.  I am sure you have heard this ad naseum, but in my experience, water is the best weight loss tool you have.  Yes, you will pee a lot. But its worth it.  I like to keep 500 ml bottles of water on hand, that way if I drink at least 4 a day, I know I have filled my water quota.  It suppresses false hunger pangs (often a by-product of dehydration), allows metabolic functions to occur smoothly and flushes toxins.
