Foods If I eat roughly the same things everyday would that be bad? May 23 2009

Hi xlovelyx, I feel the same way you do about having a routine and that it's easier to eat the same things all the time.
I do that, too. But I tend to eat way more than you for less calories.

Breakfast: alternate either an omelet (1 egg, 1 egg beaters, 2 slices deli ham, 1 slice cheese, chopped green peppers) and 4 oz. OJ (with Metamucil); or, low sugar instant oatmeal with craisins and OJ

Lunch: salad greans (lots!) with craisins and spray dressing; 6 slices deli ham; carrots or cauliflower, 1/2 cup Fiber one; banana

Dinner: salad greens (lots!), tomato, spray dressing; 4 oz. meat for fish; 1/2 baked potato or 1/2 cup rice; veggies;
Dessert: (always!) 1/2 cup frozen yogurt; 4 graham crackers

This comes out to about 1200 calories for me. At barely 5 ft. tall and sedentary, that's all I need; you could have more.
Like you, I started in the 230s (this time) and have lost over 60 lbs so far.

Eating the same thing all the time is probably not the best thing to do, but I figure if it works for you, keep doing it.

Good luck xlovelyx!

Foods Cottage cheese.. any suggestions? Mar 29 2009

Hi Andrea, I am not a huge fan of cottage cheese, but there is an old Weight Watchers recipe for "cheese blintzes" that I love.

Toast a piece of bread
Spread 1/2 cup cottage cheese on the bread - to the edges
Sprinkle with 1 tsp. splenda
Sprinkle with cinnamon to taste (I use a lot)
Place under the broiler until cheese just begins to melt.

It doesn't sound great - warm cottage cheese - but it is yummy!

(You can skip the bread if you want to save the calories; just put the cottage cheese in an aluminum pan and put it under the broiler - tastes alot like warm rice pudding)

Jenn, there is a great CC Group of ladies following NROLFW (http://caloriecount.about.com/new-rules-lifti ng-women-g489). Members of the group are at all stages of the program, from beginners to women who have already finished. They are all so supportive. You might want to take a look and consider joining.  Smile

One more week! Sure would be nice to hit at least 15 pounds lost. :)

Good luck on your exams tyrdrop and your birthday! 21 is a biggie! Sometimes you just have to celebrate and I think 21 (and being done sith exams) is one of those times. I still remember my 21st birthday back in the stone age...well, at least most of it. :)
Enjoy - no guilt - then get back to healthy eating. We have to be able to live "real life" or eventually we'll just say all this hard work is just not worth it and go back to all the bad habits.

Good for you, too, runforfun. 20 pounds since September is great!

Deloughy, hope your EMT certification test went well.

With only 2 weeks left, it doesn't look like I'm going to "lose 30 pounds by Christmas" or my lower goal of 19 pounds; probably not even 1 pound a week (16 lbs.). Even so, having to report weekly has kept me on track and I appreciate that!

I was so disappointed when I got on the scale this week. I didn't think I would gain. Boo hiss! I'm telling myself it must be muscle because I have been lifting weights for a couple of weeks (sure it is!). :)

Way to go, gurl0411 and punkrockriot! You guys are doing great!

It's nice to see things moving fairly steadily in the right direction. With just 4 weeks to go, I don't know if I'll make my goal, but I'm happy with my progress so far.

I'm planning to deal with Thanksgiving the same way as deloughy. I have to think of this as "real life" eating, not just a temporary diet. In real life I want to eat turkey and mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie, so portion control has to be the way to accomplish it. Good luck to all of us and Happy Thanksgiving to us yanks!

Side note to posthumanfetus: I tried your cabbage spaghetti last night. Yummy!! I added just a couple of tablespoons of sauce for color and flavor; with the cabbage, italian sausage and parmesan it was really good. Thanks!

Another side note: my daughter and I went to Applebee's for dinner on Friday (after going to see Twilight). Their Weight Watcher's choices all look wonderful. I had the steak and portobello mushrooms (comes with potato and broccoli). It was delicious, the portion-size was perfect and it was only 330 calories! (I don't know if I believe the calorie count, but that's what it said, and that's what I logged). Smile

Congratulations tyrdrop, punkrockriot, deloughy, posthumanfetus and everyone else who is persevering! To borrow a phrase, "Yes, we can!!!"

BTW, I'm looking forward to trying the cabbage "spaghetti." It sounds great, unfortunately, my local grocer had no italian turkey sausage this week, so I have to wait til next week. I do have some turkey brats in my freezer, so I picked up some cabbage anyway.
This is a good recipe for the turkey brats:
Slice up the brats (10 slices per brat makes it easy to log) and brown them. Slice a whole head of cabbage and cook that until it is limp. Add in the sausage, 1 can of stewed tomates and some caraway seed and let it cook til the flavors blend.
As long as you limit the sausage, you can just pig out on the cabbage! It is yummy!

Weight Loss What do you eat every day that effectively helps you lose weight? Help for those who don't know how to eat to lose the weight! Oct 12 2008

I usually eat between 1100 and 1200 calories per day.

Breakfast:
either omelet - 1 egg, 1/4 c. egg beaters, ham, cheese, green peppers (190 cal)
or oatmeal - instant, low sugar maple with craisins (180 cal)
with Metamucil mixed with 1/2 C. OJ + 1/2 C. water (90 cal)
Breakfast average: 275-ish

For lunch:
salad - bagged salad, craisins, grape tomatoes, sometimes more veggies, with a spray dressing  (100 cal)
baby carrots or cauliflower (30-ish cal)
1/2 C. Fiber One cereal (whichever I have on hand) (60-85 cal)
banana (105 cal)
Lunch average: 300-ish

Dinner:
salad (like lunch but minus the craisins, with maybe a low cal dressing instead of spray) (75 cal)
4 oz meat or fish (120 for chicken, 170 for salmon, 270 for beef)
at least 1 veggie (30-75)
1/2 baked potato or 1/2 C. rice (80 cal)
Dinner average: 375-400

Dessert (always!!):
1/2 c. frozen yogurt (90-110 cal)
1-4 graham crackers (30-120 depending on how many keep me under 1200 for the day)
Dessert average: 190-ish

It's a lot of food and as long as I get my dessert at the end of the day, I'm happy! Smile

I was one of the Monday weigh-in people, but changing that to Sunday is not a problem. I just want you to know, deloughy, that I am as serious as a heart attack about this. I have lost (just) over 40 pounds since joining CC in March and I am an evangelist for the site and counting calories and especially logging food.

I especially like the challenges (and really appreciate you and the others who take the iniative to organize them)  because they keep me accountable to more than just my personal scale. But, as hard as I try and as serious as I am, my body is only dropping an average of 1/2 pound a week, even though, mathematically (eat meter - burn meter) it should be at least a pound or more. Very frustrating, but not an indication of how serious I'm taking your challenge.

Hi leeann82, thanks for the tip for increasing water. Being structured works for me, so I'm going to try your idea.
BYW, healthy stool?? click on the link which is an excerpt from his book (p. 191), the third paragraph begins, "Let's look down into the toilet and do a self-test (c'mon, you're alone anyway)..." and goes on to describe what to look for. Ain't education great! Smile
And wow! 13 pounds so far on this challenge! Good for you!!

Hey jennlett, enjoy those cookies, then jump back on the wagon. I know how hard it is when they are just sitting there in your face! My Mom had a great line from Weight Watchers (when she had the will-power to use it). "Thanks, but no thanks, I'm allergic to cookies (cake, candy, whatever), I break out in fat!" Good luck!

@jennlett, thanks for the encouragement! I am not going to give up. I know this works. I'm sticking to that 1200 calories and I know that I'll start losing again ... eventually. It's just not fair to hit a wall when I'm trying to do a challenge here. Smile

@aperfectblink, I have been using Metamucil for several months and I think it is a good thing. I don't want to get real graphic here, but have you read You, the Owner's Manual by Dr. Mehmet Oz? He describes a healthy stool. Well, since I've been using Metamucil, I'm healthy. Laughing

BTW...not doing well with upping my water intake, ugh! but I have walked my legs off at the convention the last 3 days!

Arrgghhhh! I think I have hit a plateau and it is not fun!
Several years ago I managed a major weight loss and when I hit 40 pounds I hit a wall. The scale did not budge for months. I went on to lose a total of 60 (and then gained 90% of it back again!).
Anyway, I am right at that same spot again, right around 40  pounds...and stuck. It's not the food. I can't remember the last time I went over 1200 calories. I think my metabolism has simply adjusted.
So, what to do?
I'm going to do two things:
- drink more water - I really have to force this. I rarely drink water
- walk - I REALLY, REALLY have to force this! Smile I am a very sedentary person, but I'm going to a convention this week where I know I will be walking a lot and next week - I WILL WALK!
Wish me luck!

Now that I am done whining... It's good to see so many of you doing so well! Keep up the good work!

So, I'm a bit disappointed to have only lost 1/2 pound. I'm not going to make my goal averaging 1 pound a week. Frown
I should be happy that it was a loss. I'm consistently eating 1100 to 1200 cal./day so it has to even out at some point.
I really enjoy reading everybody's comments. Looks like everyone is doing great this week. Stay strong!

I wasn't sure how this week was going to go. My husband and I went to Michigan this weekend for my niece's wedding (which was great fun!). It was the first time since I joined CC that I have not prepared my own meals, although we both tried to make good choices - even at Burger King! :) We even took a bag of good snacks for the road trip there and home and, of course, the dancing helped.
I think we both did well, so that was an added plus after a wonderful weekend.

Thanks for all the support. This has been a great challenge! Looking forward to seeing you all on another one.

Well, that's a bummer! Saturday I weighed 192.5, today I weigh 194. I don't know why my Mondays always seem higher than Saturdays, even though I religiously eat between 1100-1200 calories a day.

Good start for you d00r! Great end to the Labor Day challenge and good start for this one!

Hi deloughy! You have got a huge crowd going here. I hope you have room for one more!

I am 59 years old (and so, the old lady of the group?!), 4'11" and 192.5 lbs as of yesterday.
I have been overweight all my life and have been on just about every diet imaginable. I have had the most success with Atkin-type low-carb diets (lost 40 one time, 60 another time) but it's not a realistic way to live and once I stopped doing low-carb, I gained it all back and more.
This time, I'm trying to do it right - eat real food in a normal way, just being aware of the portions. I was so excited when I found CC back in March.
1 started CC at 230 pounds, I've been logging my food daily since March 13, keeping to 1100-1200 calories a day. and so far, I've lost 37.5 pounds! (Yay!)

I'm just finishing the Labor Day challenge, and it was so motivational, I'm really looking forward to this one. Thanks for organizing it.
I need to set a bit more realistic goal than 30 pounds, though! I'm going to go for 175 and hope I surpass it.

I was sick over the weekend and barely ate anything so today's weight probably doesn't even count. I'll probably end on an up-note next week, but it sure looks pretty right now!
Smile

yessicazctcs that challenge does look doable. Thanks for the heads up. And good for you! You're doing great!

Hard to believe there are only 2 weeks left! Thanks stephtobea9 for posting this challenge. It is the second challeng I have participated in (the first was the July 4th challenge) and I have found them so motivating. It's good to know that you are accountable to someone and the other participants have been great.

So, I've been looking around for the next challenge that will help me through the next 6 to 8 weeks. Has anyone seen one open up?  Something very generic, like this one is - not a specific pounds or percent or fitness goal - just set a goal and post your weight.

Let me know if you find one. I know some familiar names came from the July 4th challenge to this one. Perhaps we can move on together to the next one???
