| The Lounge | What is a good career/job for a single mom? Real money | Apr 26 2008 14:30 (UTC) |

If you have a military installation or a government entity nearby, go to www.usajobs.gov, search for a field of work that is appealing to you because it covers a huge variety of fields, and put in an application. There is always room for advancement for those who are ambitious. Plus many career centered positions offer paid college while you work. Not to mention all the free training you can receive while in the job. And one important factor - it's very family friendly, especially for single parents. Don't say your skills are limited, perhaps your range of skills have not been challenged, that's all. Who knows? You might be an excellent lab technician, or a real whiz at numbers, or possess extraodinary organization skills. You could land an upward mobility position where you start at the bottom of the totem pole but advance up the payscale annually to achieve full potential status. The website is like a huge catalog of jobs - there's something for everyone. Nursing, computer aided design, engineering, food services, child care etc. It's just gigantic. Can't hurt to browse around. Good luck, and I'm sorry for your loss. |

P0nda, as awful as I feel I will accept your 'slap in the face' to be constructive if not a tad shocking. I can do well most of the time and will continue despite the family woes. As the old quote goes "thanks, I needed that". |

As hokey as it can possibly be... I LOVE the smell of my husband when he comes out from the shower. Just as bad is when he comes home from work smelling like somebody's old basement. Funny though, our pets just love rolling around in his dirty laundry. Must be all those other assorted pet smells he brings home. |

| The Lounge | what are your beauty secrets? | Apr 13 2008 23:09 (UTC) |

I'm in my upper 40s and I think my skin is holding up pretty well. I drink tons of water and I always have moisturizers available. I don't think expensive creams are any better than others - $17 is alot to me too! I found a three step moisturizer - Alpha Hydroxy, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E...at the Dollar Tree. Best stuff I've ever used. I went back and cleaned them out. I stay out of direct sun if I can and I always have sunscreen with me in my bag. I never leave home without it. But if you take the time to brush your teeth at night, go the extra couple minutes and do what's good for your skin before you hit the sack. When you are my age, you will be glad you did! |

Just try to visualize that lovely oxygen tank you will be dragging around with you in another 15 years!!! Maybe you can buy coordinating jackets for it to match your attire! I smoked for 25 years and then I had a major health scare. After xrays, it turned out that my connective tissue had separated from my ribs. Pretty painful. I honestly thought it was smoking related and that I'd finally damaged myself beyond the point of no return. I think we all believe we will quit sooner or later, but later might be past that point of no return. I had this vision of lugging around oxygen in a bottle for the rest of my life and knew it was time to quit. After that episode I never picked up another pack and I was in the middle of dieting, so it can be done. My will power is no better than anyone else's believe me. You can lose weight if you gain it, but you can't buy new lungs. Now is always a good time to quit. Good luck! |

THAT was a brave step, you are awesome! I never could jog, even as a kid but my husband and I decided to get roller blades since our neighborhood street is well paved and long. We have had a blast. Our neighbors think we are nuts (both of us are approaching 50), but it's fun. We wear ALL the gear available. At our age, we don't bounce anymore! Congratulations on your achievement! |

When I was in my late teens and dating a catholic boy (I'm methodist), my mom told me, 1) I should not marry a catholic. When I eventually married and considering moving out of state, she said, 2) do not to move too far away from the family. SHE, meets a man online, he's Jewish, she converts to Jewish and then moves away from Maryland to Arizona. Gee mom, so much for practicing what you preach! The important thing is she is happy and he is a great guy. My older sister met a man online too, through a dating service, and they hooked up and have been married now for about 10 years. So it is possible to meet nice people on line. Two online dating stories, two happy endings. |

Yeah, my cats can be gross too, but dogs rule when it comes to gross. Not only does she steal cat box tootsie rolls, she will also eat cat puke. yuk...ick. yak. Gross! My dog will also eat chapstik, and mangle the toothpaste tube I toss in the bathroom garbage can. I give her dog food. .. you know, DOG...FOOD. I can hardly get her to eat it. |

You know how the bagger always says "Have a nice day?" One day my sister looked right at her and said "Don't tell me what to do". It was like the world stopped turning, or for those few old enough to remember...like an "E.F. Hutton" commercial. That lady's face was priceless and my sister just busted out laughing. Her reaction to that remark took her off guard. It was totally a joke and the bagger was a friend of hers. Even funnier was the cashier's reaction. She was more surprised than the bagger because she wasn't aware that the two were friends. |

pgeorgian, the going out to breakfast remark you made reminded me of a place here in Vermont called Eaton's Sugarhouse. Open 365 days a year for breakfast and lunch. We take friends who come up to visit there because the spread is so incredible, people take pictures of it. They make their own maple syrup, so it's a real tourists attraction. The waitress there said as the morning progresses the pancakes get larger with each order. I love to go there, but try to make it only a few times a year. I wouldn't fit through a door if I went there more often! Whenever we leave there, I always remark that I need a dolly to take me back out to my car. |

Good for you - now she is getting what she deserves. I had a boss who thought she could holler at me - in front of other people. I think she was bi-polar, and she lashed out without provocation. So I landed a new job as I was still working and just left one day. Left her cold. Isn't that what they say, Revenge is a dish best served cold? How sweet it is! You are now free to knock on new doors of opportunity - Good luck! |

First....I try not to have anything too tempting in my house, which forces me to gather my brain cells and get a cup of hot tea. It is very effective, BUT....if I had to choose one thing that I can have that doesn't affect my diet way too badly, it would be a fat free chocolate pudding and lite cool whip sundae. ..drizzled w/low cal chocolate syrup. And I feel for you CD, Easter is over and all the guys in my office are bringing in truck loads of left over chocolate. Not the cheap stuff, but it's mini 3 musketeers, and mini twix bars and Reese's peanut butter eggs. Yikes! |

| Weight Loss | Are you obsessed? | Mar 28 2008 18:06 (UTC) |

I am trying to be as accurate as possible with my entries everyday, even if it's 2 pickle chips or 4 M&Ms. It all adds up. Obsessive....maybe. In the long run, I win! If I have a bad day...i.e, Ben & Jerry's ..I will be honest w/myself and log it, as much as I hate to admit. You know that stuff is 260 cals for 1/2 cup!! But when the scale doesn't budge for a week, I know exactly who to blame. :) |
