Can I join?  I need to lose around 10-15 pounds exactly.  Twenty would be nice but I will be so happy with like 13!  I want to try to lose maybe 10 by November but that seems unrealistic.

Vegetarian Holier than Thou? A morality issue Jul 25 2009

Original Post by wifi92:

Vegetarians have chosen a mythical "healthy" lifestyle.  Our society is based on Judeo-Christian principles, one which is personal liberty.  One can be a veggie person, and that's ok, one can be more realistic and eat anything animal God compassionately gives us to eat.

It's not any issue of morality, or rightness.  If one uses a blue towel vs. a green towel after a shower, it's their choice.  It's a personal taste and/or preference issue, not one of morally right.  The blue towel user isn't "more right" than the green towel user, just different.

I tried to bite my tongue on this, I don't mean to start anything, but i totally disagree with this.  It IS about morals for a lot of veg*ns.

One thing I make every few weeks is tofu salad.  You can change the ingredients up a bit but it is basically like any egg salad and make it into a sandwich.  I usually get a block of firm tofu, drain, mash it up, add vegenaise, mustard, every spice i have in the cupboard lol, mainly onion, garlic, creole seasoning, sometimes chili powder, i add pickes, tomato, sometimes avocado.  It lasts at least a week when i have it every day for lunch.  I make it into a sandwich or wrap.

Thanks darklylinky and others who said the same thing, now I am going to feel crappy all day.  I'm 5'1.5 and range between size 6-8 depending on the brand i guess.  My weight has been fluctuating between 118-120 the past couple week and am trying to lose.  Do you think it is FAT though?  honestly people...

Oh please!  Are you really going to let the opinions of some people on a forum and a celebrity website influence your emotions?  If so, you deserve to feel like crap.

Ok you know what?  I wasn't referring to the celebrity site.  And I was half joking.  I wasn't whining and I hope you weren't referring to me in your journal entry.  Sorry, I didn't realize I wasn't allowed to vent.  First time I've written a post in a while.  Thanks.  You have a great weekend!

Well, if you guys dish it out, you should be able to take it.  And thanks, I'm already having a great weekend.

Still no need to be a you know what.  Bye bye...

Lol I know! And posting in this forum turns me into more of a b**** than I usually am. Around my meat-eating friends I have a very laid-back, do what you want attitude. I think its just that people who've put that much thought into a lifestyle choice feel very strongly about it, and when you get them all together they loooove to talk about it, since they probably spend most of their time pretending not to be bothered by other people eating cheeseburgers.

Danaofdoom that is exactly right.  I am laid back around my friends and even my fiance but i do try to educate them right if they ask.  When i get worked up about it is because i feel so strongly about it and i myself constantly have animals on the brain.  I'm always thinking about them, i wish i could do more to help them, wish they didn't have to go through this.  The sadness i feel for them is so strong and often does turn into anger because of what they have to go through day in and day out just for our unnecessary cravings, amusement, etc.  What they go through is worse than any horror movie.  Sorry.  Not trying to argue, really.  Maybe i shouldn't have responded to this!

Anyway, we're not nutjobs, we just care a LOT.  And often feel helpless.  I try hard to be calm about it just sometimes i get so passionate about it, you know?  I don't want to come off as crazy but sometimes i just do.

Ok but let us know if you try any milks.  I think you would really like some of the soy milk brands listed.  I could drink glasses of em myself.  Although i don't but only because i have a very limited amount of calories!

Have you tried any of the plain non-dairy milks? You might be pleasantly surprised with some brands.  I'll give you some suggestions on brands.  And go for plain or original, although none will taste just like cow milk but they are all so good!

Vitasoy - warning on this brand though it is pretty sweet tasting but soooooooo good!

woohoo! you got the fight going here!

first, if god didn't want us to eat all those innocent cows, why did he fill them with meat?

But more importantly to you, perhaps you are craving meat because you are lacking a nutrient it provides?  not enough protein?  or something more specific...red meat is high in iron?  perhaps fill the void and the meat cravings go away?

Uh, in case you weren't aware, meat is muscle.  And that means that we, humans, are made of meat too.  Come on now.  Don't be ridiculous.  If you are so proud of eating innocent animals and want to preach about some stupid insensitive **** then stay out of the veg forum.

Vegetarian Vegetarian beyond just food Mar 05 2009

Well, I'm vegan so I don't use anything that comes from an animal, don't go to circuses, avoid zoos, etc.  Don't use things tested on animals (that one even made me quit smoking!  Except i slip on that sometimes when i drink, unfortunately), i don't use ANYTHING that came from an animal, etc.

And yeah, the majority of the population thinks it's "extreme", but you know what, i don't care.  So, if you want to be more strict in your veg ways don't worry about what other people think.  It's your life.  Heck my now fiance called me extreme when i told him what veganism was and used to make fun of me (before we got together).  1.5 years later he has quit eating cows and pigs, drinks soymilk, cares more about the animals and the planet and wants to become vegan when we quit working overseas!

Anyway, my point was you do what feels best for you.  Once you get the hang of things, it is not that hard to avoid using and eating things that contribute to animal exploitation.  And if you need motivation, all you have to do is watch some videos now and then to remind yourself of the HELL those poor babies go through 24/7 for our greed.

Original Post by laceypierson:

Actually, most people are vegetarian because they don't believe that animals should be killed for us to either EAT or USE in any products we buy. Gelatin is made by killing animals... therefore, it is not consistent with what most vegetarians consider vegetarianism to be. Just because you don't want to eat meat, but are okay with eating other sloughter-by products, doesn't mean your the type of vegetarian that these people are trying to be.

I have to agree totally with this - in my opinion, if you are aware of gelatin, what it is, and how it is made, and you choose to consume it anyway, you might as well sit down to a bloody slab of cow's ass! So if your choice to be vegetarian was made for ethical reasons, gelatin cannot be a part of that (nor can rennet).

I see 'by-products' as being things like milk, cheese, eggs, honey etc. Things that do not (directly) cause the death of the animal (but in the bigger picture, do cause death. After a miserable life...)

Products derived from a slaughtered animal for our consumption are just like meat (only even MORE disgusting - boiled pig's trotter, anyone?? Calf's stomach lining?? Mmmmm).

I see your point. But there are different types of vegetarians that do what they do for different reasons. Me- I just dont eat MEAT (ACTUAL MEAT)...not for ethics, not for morals or religion...but soley for health because I think its healthier to not consume meat. (And Im not saying that consuming those other things are healthy- so dont start on that please). Honestly, I would start on about how animals were put here to be eaten, but that would just start a whole other debate which Im not in the mood for. So for the purpose of peace, Ill just leave it as I dont eat meat for health reasons. Nothing else.

And I must stress that Im NOT saying anyone else here or anywhere must have my same opinion on why they do or dont eat meat and its by-products or whatever. I was simply pointing out the terms used. That vegetarians simply dont eat meat....vegans dont eat meat or eat/use their by-products.

Look... most TRUE vegetarians don't eat the by-products of dead animals.  If YOU don't eat the actual meat then really it is pointless for you to even be in this thread (because you don't consider gelatin, rennet, etc to be non-vegetarian for you, therefore, none of this thread applies to you).  There was no reason for you to say:

"Its sorta bothering me tha you guys keep saying that these foods and products you all are listing "arent vegetarian". Yes they are. They just arent VEGAN!"

Because for the people who ARE vegetarians (and not vegans), especially for the animals, most if not all of the products we have named are NOT vegetarian in their book and the knowledge of animal by-products in this thread is helpful to THEM.

I know i probably didn't explain all this right, i'm tired.  Anyway, just had to say it.

Oh and SULFYR, I believe it is only American McMurders that have the cow extract in their fries.  I know the ones in the Middle East do not and apparently they don't in Canada, I don't think they taint the fries in the UK, either.

My fiance is pretty supportive for the most part.  He will listen to me vent and stuff but he gets upset sometimes and says i obsess too much and says he loves me and thinks i look great no matter what i weigh.  He knows i'm super sensitive too so he doesn't say much other than that!  But like if i say i lost a pound or something he will say "good job!".  LOL

Thanks for the quick reply!  Like i said, I usually try to do 1200-1500 and usually end up at like 1400.  How much should i eat on days i am not exercising?  What about days i do and burn 400?  I do get usually at least 40 grams of protein a day.  That should be enough right?  II also eat Luna/Clif bars sometimes and meat alternatives.

Ok but gelatin IS part dead animal carcass.

Also, just wanted to make sure all the vegetarians know about rennet.  I don't have time to get into it, google it if you want.  But, I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 12 years before I even knew about rennet.  I am so ashamed, and would have been a vegan a lot sooner if i had found out sooner.  Anyway, the minute I found out about rennet (little over 2 years ago)I became vegan, on the spot.  I can't believe it took 12 years.  I should have become one because of the horrors of the dairy/egg industry alone but i wasn't educated enough on that, either.

I just had to say something about the Ritter chocolate...

Yes, it is one of the best out there but it is too good lol, for me.  I will tend to go a little overboard so i stick to endangered species (actually i mostly stick to endangered species because they help the environment too and the cute animals on the wrappers!), which is amazing also and 1-3 pieces of that is mostly satisfying enough!
