The Army serves it to us in Iraq. It's not bad, use to give us Red Bull too expen sive. I have no problems with it, I drink a couple of the sugar free oarnge mini cans each week it works as well as coffee. |

I love it too. I eat a double serving (1 cup) of quick oats for breakfast pretty much every day and "snack" on instant oatmeal at work it's filling and healthy. I was getting a lot of flack about eating it around the office but now several of my Paratroopers are eating instant oatmeal for a mid afternoon snack. |

| Fitness | Boston Marathon, how long to train? | Apr 03 2008 11:16 (UTC) |

I started training in October of 2007, glad I began so early due to a knee injury that kept me from running for a couple of weeks and had to reduce my mileage for another month or so. If you have a good mileage base built up 4 months is enough of a train up. You can get training regiments from many web pages Runners World etc. Find one you like and can physically handle and let the training begin. Make sure you increase your mileage slowly and have good shoes, not necessarily expensive shoes that are the correct type for your running style, neutral biomechanically efficient runner, over-pronater etc. If you go to a shoe store and the clerk recommends a pair of running shoes to you because it’s what he wears leave quickly. Remember you have to qualify for Boston by completing a qualifying marathon within a specified time frame for your age. I'm 38 the qualifying time is 3:15 slightly faster than a 7.5 minute mile. The Boston Athletic Association hosts the Boston Marathon (Iraq) at the FOB I'm on. It's not a bad deal didn't have to provide a qualifying time and we get an official Boston Bib, long-sleeve t-shirt and finishers medal just like everyone who's running in Boston.

The beginning programs on sites like RunnersWorld.com are a great place to start. As someone mentioned earlier get a good pair of running shoes from a independent shoe store if possible. Shoes make a big difference in how you feel when running as well as helping to prevent or to cause injuries. I began my running career in the Army I was running in expensive Nike shoes, cushioned neutral shoes, and had knee problems. When I finally had to see a Doc, who was a runner, he watched my form informed me that I overpronated and needed stability shoes not neutral shoes. It made a big difference and the knee pain went away.

Biggest Obstacle to Getting Healthy? & nbsp; The Dining Facility on the FOB I've been a Paratrooper for 16 years now as time went by my waist grew with my rank. The bigger the promotion the bigger my belly became. I weighed 201 pounds when I decided it was time to lose weight. I was one of those in shape fat guys, I still scored high on my physical fitness tests but didn't pay attention to what I ate. What opened my eyes was 2 months into a training program for a marathon I lost a whopping 3 pounds. I started to keep a food log realized how many calories I was consuming started eating healthy and right now I'm 170 pounds want to lose 10 more and maintain it. |

If you read the training advice on sites like Runners World etc; they all recommend that you eat or have a carb drink prior to run. How much you eat depends on how long before your run you consume the food, what you eat is a personal preference. I like to drink about 12 ounces of water or sports drink and have a couple of bananas about an hour before a run. |

| Fitness | Run faster outside or on the treadmill? | Mar 17 2008 06:35 (UTC) |

Lot's of people find that when they transition from the treadmill to running outside they seem to run at a faster pace. Just be careful because running on a treadmill uses different muscles than running on the road; ease into running faster on the road to avoid injury. That was the explanation I received from the Doctor when I went from the treadmill to running on the road and suffered a knee injury. |
