Foods Thanksgiving food... Nov 26 2009
16:29 (UTC)

Thanksgiving in my family is tremendous.  Glad I don't eat with some of y'all because it sounds like a bad scene.  We made homemade capalletti and porketta, my brown bad turkey, homemade dressing with chorizo and fresh mushrooms, and tons of home made pies and candies.  I spent all day yesterday cooking, and I've been up since 4:30, to hit the gym and then back to the kitchen.  I love Thanksgiving!

Well done.  I wish I'd have done the photos of me, the last 3 months.  Great idea!  Oh, and I live fairly close to KC.  Where you going to school?

I'm originally from Atlanta, but go to school at Kansas State University, in good old Manhattan, KS!

Let me apologize in advance for what my Sooners are going to do to your Wildcats today.

When I reach my goal, I will start the backpiece I've been drawing for ten years.  And I'll walk with my head a little higher, even if most people don't know why.

Thanks everyone its greatly appreciated! Being off at college my family hadn't seen me through this whole transition, over the summer they didn't recognize me! As for the race, I've ran a 10k over the summer no problem and have been training pretty hard for the 1/2 marathon, just getting nervous, that "good" nervous though! If anyone is running the Kansas City Waddell and Reed Marathon/Half tomorrow, be on the look out for me! :)

Well done.  I wish I'd have done the photos of me, the last 3 months.  Great idea!  Oh, and I live fairly close to KC.  Where you going to school?

BBQ sauce.  On most anything.  Raw veggies, eggs, cooked veggies, pasta, rice, even oatmeal.  It's my condiment for everything.

1. how do you prepare your penne? With a nice homemade Alfredo and some Italian sausage.

2. how do you like your ravioli? what filling? what sauce?  I prefer mine with a meat filling of beef, pork and chicken, cooked in chicken stock.  Capaletti.

3. what's your favorite way to prepare lasagna? traditional? veggies? (if so what kind of veggies do you use and what kind of cheese?)  I kill it over the top with Beef, sausage, a good thick homemade red sauce, and tons of great cheeses that vary depending on my mood.  And lots of crushed red pepper.

4. how do you like your mashed potatoes? (what variety of potatoes? do you use any special ingredients to make it tasty and low cal? do you leave the skin on?)  Not a fan.  Family loves 'em good red skin potatoes, leave some of the skins on, lots of fresh roasted garlic, butter, cream and salt and pepper.  Leave 'em lumpy.

5. how do you eat your sweet potatoes/yams?  Sliced thick, hit hard with fresh ground black pepper, a little canola oil, and roasted slow in the over.  Or just backed plain, and served with a little pepper on them.

6. what's your lowest calorie/healthiest pastry item? if there is a recipe please post it. if it is store bought please specify what it is.  No idea what that would be.  No sweet tooth.

7. what's your favorite sandwich filling? (top 3 ingredients)  Grilled chicken, Spicy Brown mustard, and hot peppers.

8. what's your favorite pita filling? (top 3 ingredients)  I don't know that there's ever been a pita in my home.

9. what's your favorite way to have rice? what kind of rice?any special sauces/veggies/etc.?  Fried with shrimp and veggies.

10. what's you favorite way to have spaghetti? do you add veggies? do you use special noodles?  See above.

HIIT has always given me great results but as stared above, it's about the intensity. If you drag it, during the none full max intensity phase, you aren't helping yourself.  As soon as my weight loss starts to ebb off, I am starting back in, to get things back on track.

More power to those of you who can drink that stuff.  I've tried, and I'd rather drink out of my guttering.  And it's not really milk.  They should call it soy drink.

I love it.  It's basically short bursts of super intense exercise(sprints), followed by small periods of less intense exercise(jogging).  I've always followed the Muscle Media protocol of 30/30 rotated 8 times for a 4 minute cycle.  You start with one, and you then work up to multiple cycles in the same workout.

Keep in mind, it isn't limited to running.  I've seen people apply it to cycling, the eliptical, even weight training and have seen amazing results.

When I was in college, they made all of the football team do hydrostatic bodyfat measurements at the start of Spring, end of Spring, start of Fall, just to see if everyone is sticking to their plans, and hitting their goals and I always found it helpful.  I was a back so I wanted to keep my weight within a tight range of about 8-10 pounds so I played at my fastest and it was much more useful for me than a scale.  You'll be fine, and it'll be great information to have.  Just keep in mind, if you use any other method for bodyfat measurement, it probably won't be a good comparison.

You are going out to what sounds like a pretty good restaurant(ood menu, and small).  Get what you like, and one night, don't stress the calories.  Account for them during your day, maintaining maybe 100-125 calories every few hours, until about 3 hours before you go out, and then just enjoy yourself.  I'd get the New York Strip, and never look back...

WHat exactly does overtraining do to you....and how do you know if youre overtraining?

Overtraining, put pretty basic, is when you train more, and harder than you allow yourself to recover from.  Here are some indications of overtraining....

Overtraining may be accompanied by one or more concomitant symptoms:

Does anyone know if its bad for you to work out twice a day. Like once in the morning and once in the evening... I probably wouldnt work out the same mucle groups twice...maybe just lightly a quick touch-up at night?

It depends on what you are doing when, really.  I wouldn't weight train twice a day, no, because recovery is so vital that over the week, you could overtrain, but to do a split day, weights and cardio or interval training, sure that's a very good idea.

thanks! i normally dont eat as much as im supposed to . it says im supposed to eat 2,300 calories . i can usually never do that. i probably ate that tonight but this is rare. before i ate the fries and ice cream i had about 1000 calories.

So odds are, you probably didn't exceed your daily intake.  Heck, if you've been eating as little as 1000 for an extended period, your body was probably looking forward to the calorie bump, and will thank you for it, with a boost in your metabolism.

Foods How bad would it be to eat an iced honey bun? Apr 15 2008

Original Post by alanbates:

The heart of the matter of this thread's topic is based around 'luxury' food. Anyone saying "oh sure. eat whatever you want" or "you only live once" is kind of leading the people who actually care about themselves astray.

I have to respectfully disagree.  Being able to allow oneself to enjoy food, that isn't part of their normal healthy diet but part of what they know, is vital to many dieters success, and in will help them maintain the psychological advantage they need to continue.  Being able to put something out there, as a goal, in terms of a meal, or a food, is a great thing for a dieter.  Allowing yourself that "luxury" food as you call it, can be very motivating to keep people moving forward.  At some point I think many people try and overthink diets, and assume the worst of behaviors like the one presented here.  Was a honey bun the healthiest choice?  Of course not, but is it the worst thing that could have happened?  Not even close.  If having something like that, satisfies that urge, and he's back on the horse tomorrow, no harm done.

And how insulting is it to assume someone who would have that attitude don't care about themselves?  That's asinine.

Keep everything in perspective.  How far over your normal intake did you go?  My suggestion would be to take that overage, and divide it by 2, and trim that from your intake from the next 2 days, and you'll have no ill effects.  Don't let this get you down.

Always been a grazer, and I think it's a great idea.  I actually space mine out, every 2 hours, that I am awake, and base the calories on that, as the day goes one.  I don't plan mine ahead, I just go with the day, and if at the end of the day, I have some extra for the last 2 meals, I eat a little more, if I don't, I eat a little less.

...I haven't really heard anything consistent on an allowance of saturated fats.

My rule of thumb with sat fat is this:
I have a personal "allowance" of 0 g of saturated fat in a day. However, that doesn't mean that I eat no sat fat. It means that I apply different rules to it. I multiply the count of saturated fat grams by the caloric content of whatever I ate, then divide that in half. I add this many calories on to my cardio workout for the day (or for the next day if I've already done my cardio)

Using your iced honey bun as an example: (using stats from calorie-count.com

430 Kcalories

5 g of saturated fat

(430 x 5) / 2 = 1050 Kcal

Becomes a penalty of 1050 Kcal that I have to burn extra(about an hour of moderate-high moderate intensity on an elliptical for me....or about an hour 15 minutes rowing, or about an hour run.

....It might make you want to cut your honey bun in half and save some for tomorrow ;)

Edit:  I consider meals with less than a gram of saturated fat to be negligible.  I might add them up at the end of the day if I haven't had any sat fat rich snack, but my regular workout is more than enough to absorb a little.  I make my allowance well below what is "unhealthy"  If you put a luxury tax on your sweets, it keeps them in bounds for your diet, but might make you think twice about the portion that you eat.

This coming from a guy who takes pictures of himself in a miror... Come on! Eat whatever the f you like. How did this post about honey buns turn ito a post about you again?

 This post is priceless!
