Fitness Is it bad to go to the gym every day? Jun 15 2009

Original Post by xavier7:

I want to give myself the best chance to lose weight so I would like to go to the gym every morning. I am unemployed so time is not a restrictive factor.

Everyone tells me its not healthy to go every day though, as your body will not have time to recuperate, and I should just go 5 days maximum.

Is this true?

Does anyone else go to the gym every day?

In an effort to develop good habits, you should go everyday to start. I go to lifetime and its fun. I swim somedays, weight lift others. I love the hot tub and the steam room as well. I do something different.

I do know that when I try to limit going to 3 days +/- a week I fall out of habit and stop going altogether.

Someone offered good advice to switch up cardio and resistance training (weight lifting).

One last thing.  when I see someone overweight or awkward, i say good for them. I may stare a little longer, but it's not out of disrespect.

Anyone making a negative comment about someone else at the gym may be able to fix their body but you have something they don't  - character.  Measure yourself by that and you will be a perfect 10.

here are a few suggestions:

1) First, everyone else at the gym is thinking the same thing you do. It's just like going to a class reunion. Everyone gets so caught up on themselves that they forget that everyone else is thinking the same thing you are.  The worse ones are the ones that don't go. I dragged my wife to her class reunion and it ended up being a life changing event for the better.

2) Go there knowing what you are going to do and focus on your work out.

2) bring an mp3 player and headphones and listen to what you like.

3)  If tough love works for you, try this: It's not death.  There are people in hospitals and that are permanently disabled that would beg for the opportunity you have.  When you go, represent them.

4) Find a material object, such as a charm for a necklace or one of those trendy rubber bracelets.  When you get scared touch the bracelet and think about the handicapped and disabled people that would trade anything to be able to work out at the gym. It works.

They "Crash Diet" instead of changing their diet to be clean and balanced.

They don't incorporate strength training into their workout.

They don't drink enough water and "drink" to many of their calories.

They don't educate themselves on proper nutrition. They think it is all about "calories" yes, you must count calories to loose but eating the right food and properly nourishing your body is just as important.

This is SOOOO true. when you get a good muscle work out your body actually is burning calories during the recovery process. YOu will lose more weight by lifting weights than you will by cardiovascular activity. as a disclaimer, lifting weights can be cardiovascular.

I am the king of binge eating.  For me, it doesn't matter what food is around, I tend to binge on it.  healthy, junk, etc. it doesn't matter.  I eat healthy, but eat too many portions.

Something that has been proven to work for me is to keep a log. It's easy after the first or second week. When I keep a log, I can see my past actions. It's important to write everythig you eat down, including water. I am getting back into logging it on this web site. Looking back at the log allows me to remember why I binged. When it's time for the next binge, I remember and it helps fight of the binge on most occassions.

Lastly, I have discovered how to have controlled binges. I will binge on edamame, popcorn or veggies. I get full and still have the guilty feeling but without the negative physical results.

Weight Loss Any tips for not nibbling while cooking? Apr 02 2008

I recently read Mindless Eating, and became aware that I was packing away hundreds of calories one bite at a time in just nibbling.  I was able to completely stop all the extras at work, car, desk, but somehow my fingers get ahead of my brain while I'm in the kitchen - either cooking or cleaning up.  I'd sure appreciate finding anyone with good tips to share.

Thanks!
Matty

I am the worst at nibbling while eating. I end up just eating veggies during the meal  if I nibble too much.

Just know your portions of what you nibbled. Nothing wrong with nibbling if you aren't in denial about it.

I've been trying to lose weight constantly for about 6 years now. When I came to college I was probably around 250. Throughout college just from eating less and having to walk to class I dropped down to about 190ish. Thats where I've stayed except for one summer when I would walk 3-4 miles every day and ate sparingly and dropped to 165. When I went back to my day job and everything, the weight came right back.

I want to weigh 150. I'm 5'10' and 23 years old. My last doctors appointment clocked me at about 183.

My problem is that I wake up, go to the office sit in front of the computer, come home have probably an hour to make dinner before I have to get back on the computer and continue working. I probably go to sleep around midnight or so. I don't get enough sleep.

I've tried fasts, I've tried not eating. I just can't. It drives me crazy if I can't eat. I started throwing up, and that hasn't lost me one ounce, either. Another problem is that I often attend dinner at my boyfriend's house and his mother is used to feeding lots of people and I normally finish my plate to be nice. He enjoys eating out often as well.

It feels like I have no time to exercise, and I don't. I had a gym membership that I never used and when I did it made me miserable to see all the 100 pound girls there when I was working out. I did strictly cardio, burning 5-600 calories per day. My boyfriend lost 10 pounds. I gained weight.

What sort of a diet is there (is there one at all?) that can compensate for this crazy life of mine?

You need to sign up for LA Weight Loss. This is not a promotion for it, but I did it. I am very health conscious but lack discipline.   What I got at LA Weight Loss was an education on nutrition. I also developed the habit of planning my meals.

I travel alot for my job and am eating out most meals per week. I put on a lot of weight because of it. Now, I sound like high maintenance when I order, but I know what to order to stay lean. Counting calories, tied in with maintaining your most efficient metabolic burn is the foundation. the discipline is second.  Excercise is last.  Don't waste your time working out if you are going to eat it all back on.

It is hard, takes discipline, especially, and education. Start out learning by going to a professional. I found LA Weight loss to be better than weight watchers because you are on your own and you are not told what to eat or not eat.  But, having someone hold you accountable is what you need to get started. Good luck.

I am at lifetime and have a family membership for $120 per month. We get a rebate of $20 per month for going 12 times or more by our insurance company.

Is it worth it?  heck yes!  I sat in the hot tub for 30 minutes today (burned 70 calories) I go in the mornings and never have a problem with not getting on machines. It is nuts in the afternoon, but its only busy during after work hours.

I love the social aspect, too. The "pretty people" are what I use as an incentive to work out. Sad to say, but not only to be in shape, but the "talent" (milfs for the guys) is outstanding! I love the people watching and its easy to run on the treadmill for an hour while people watching.

Lastly, the child care is a train wreck because it can get overcrowded, but the kids enjoy it so we take them there, anyway.  The pool in the summers is second to none. the indoor pool in the winters is great for the kids because of the slides.  I feel lifetime is as great as a value as you can get for the price. We chose it over a country club membership. Other than the golf and meeting space, we get everything we need, including the executive lifestyle.

Lol! Your body is in starvation mode! You need to eat at least 1250 calories a day for your body to not be in starvation mode. (I am not a doctor, that's what I read on this site.)

Lol! Good luck trying to relax.  I played minor league football and pro rugby.

I think the most important factor for me is the education on nutrition. I always thought that if I jut have a little bit of potato chips that it would be ok. Never realized that a McDonalds cheeseburger has 700 calories. I never knew that 3500 calories equals a pound.

My big thing was spaghetti and gatorade before big games. That's about all my diet used to consist of.

Thanks for the response.

I recommend seeing a nutritionist. You are not eating enough. I saw a nutritionist and lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks immediately after. Counting calories is great, but balanced diet is equally important. I ate more than I did, but smaller portions and more often.

I am fat again due to lack of self discipline but because of this site will lose 46 pounds by August.
