It's funny - 950-1100 is my goal to hit by 2pm. I pretty much split my cals up evenly - 500 for breakfast/snack, 500 for lunch, 500 for dinner, so 1000 cal by 2pm is so normal for me :P I'm guessing you have a lower calorie goal for the day than I do. |

That pop-hiss noise is the sound of you opening a can of worms :P You can get more advice here than you could ever have conceived existed. A lot of good advice, though, so it's at least a start. I'm not a handy person, but pegged at the top of the fitness and the food forums are long posted topics on eating right and exercising, which are great places to start. There are a fantastic set of tools just laying around here to help you out. Of course, tools are only as good as the wielder - so good luck, and wave that weight-loss hammer proudly once you've figured out how to use it :) |

That's so cute. I remember doing something similar at the laundromat the first time - didn't occur to me I could use more than 1 washer at once, I had been so used to doing it at home XD I don't prep the whole salad myself - gets too soggy for my picky palate. But I do chop a bunch of veggies in the beginning of the week, and then all I have to do is put some lettuce in a dish, put my toppings on that, and then add dressing. It's taken salad from being a huge ordeal to just 3 steps :) Glad you caught on to this! Plus, when I bring salads to work, I get compliments as if I'd spent all morning making it, so there's an extra ego boost for ya :P |

Your tastes will always change. Plus, i've heard that when you stop consuming milk products, your body stops producing the enzyme it needs to digest it. I know I became increasingly lactose intolerant the less milk/cheese I was consuming. Now cheese is a light flavoring at best :P |

Here's a problem: Most medical doctors are not especially well trained in nutrition. Now, feel free to correct me, but I've been hearing that nutrition is covered briefly, if at all, and then left behind in favor of learning about diseases and such. I'd recommend going to see a nutritionist instead, but I've known some absolutely bat-poo crazy nutritionists. It'**** and miss sometimes, but the great thing is if one person says something that doesn't make any sense, you can always go get a second opinion. Or come to CC, and get eight hundred second opinions XD |

BEST POPCORN METHOD EVER! Take a paper bag, like a lunch bag. Put in 1 serving unpopped kernals. Fold down top really well, or you can use staples (No they won't spark in the microwave, but I don't have a stapler at home, so I usually do a little tear-n-fold method to keep it shut). Microwave on high, 1-2 minutes, until the popping slows down. Careful, as it's really easy to burn popcorn this way, so it may take a few tries to figure out the timing. Luckily popcorn is cheap, so experiment away :) After, you can always shake it out, spray on some fake butter or salt or whatever it is you like on your popcorn. Hope you have a microwave :P Theoretically you could do this on a stovetop, just pop the kernals in a pot with a lid and keep shaking so the kernals don't burn. Again, requires one to pay close attention. |

Original Post by armandleg: Dude, that calculator is teh awesome!! Thanks for the handy link. Peach, I'm sorry I don't have much to say to you. I agree with most of the posters here about eating more - especially since the description you gave of what happened when you upped your intake is a classic bodily response to undereating. If you won't listen to good advice, at least pay attention to what your body is doing. I mean, what it's really doing, and not what you want to believe it's doing. If you can't trust the people here, see a nutritionist and a doctor. If they confirm what you believe, great. But the only reason not to go would be because you're afraid we are right. People frequently act against what they're afraid is true, rather than try to seek the actual truth. Go for it, you seem to be a smart girl, and there's always a bonus to seeking qualified medical opinions. And, lastly, good luck! |

I have been having a good time admiring my "pipes" - since they're actually pipe-shaped instead of blobby wobbly bits :P It's been about 3 weeks, and while they aren't rock-hard, it's nice to at least see some definition :)

yeah it's weight loss. It makes me mad, I'm doing so good on a set # of calories, and now my deficit goes down because I weigh less :P So now that I'm healthier, I have to do MORE exercise to keep my deficit at a comfortable level. Mine dropped from about 2050 to 1950. Of course, I've also lost 35 pounds... |

City and state here in PA :/ I'm reminded of a spanish class I took, where we had a discussion about paying higher taxes. I was the only one who wasn't complaining about paying taxes, because of all the services we receive based on them. Everyone started to call BS on me that I wouldn't have a problem with even higher taxes, but my teacher came to my defense. He pointed out that in Mexico, they pay a lot more % of their income in taxes for services that aren't there. It sux to have 50% or something of your income go to taxes, and when you pick up the phone there's no service.

This is completely fuzzy information, but I seem to recall some article saying basically all those "work at home stuffing envelopes" or whatever jobs are pretty pathetic. General rule is, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. |

I have a good dog. She sits with her face as close to the food as possible, but if I tell her to go away she does. However, she also likes to sit under the dining room table, because I'm a clumsy eater and she knows it :P The cats leave us be. Although there was that one comical moment when kitty bit into the steak on my husband's salad... and watching hubby fight the cat for the meat. Cat won, by the by ;) |

Milk also gives me stomachaches :P But, to refer back to the topic: I do drink tea. I love tea. And I've had tea and biscuits before, but I think it's the cream in the drink that makes it wonderful, and I don't care for cream in my tea. Coffee is intolerable without it, tho :P |

I think I'd probably like marmite if I ever got to try it :P And to be honest, baboo4, I'd prefer coffee and a biscuit rather than tea. That's the American bit for ya :) Milk and cookies is more of a little kid thing. Even when adults do it, it's far more out of nostalgia than because it's a regular adult contrivance. However, coffee with cream and a good biscotti... oh god... I'll be in my bunk ;) |

| The Lounge | Neglecting my video games | Aug 22 2008 18:13 (UTC) |

If your video games feel neglected, I will happily give them a good home ;) I saw a personal trainer for the first time yesterday. The hour was so effective, I signed up for more. But I told him, that I have to come straight after work, because if I go home I'm staying home. Mass Effect isn't going to play itself. Well, point is, it's ok to make time for video games. It's only really worrisome when you can't put them down in favor of, say, going for a walk. Or getting to bed. Or going to work. You and me, we can be gamer nerds who are also totally ripped (or at least not the stereotype of sweaty and fat anymore). |

As long as you're eating a decent dinner and keeping the calories in the right range, it should be ok I'd guess. I'm probably between 700 and 900 when I go work out, but I love it because then I don't have to stress out as much about how many calories I'm having for dinner. |

| Foods | A little of this a little of that...maybe a little more? | Aug 22 2008 18:04 (UTC) |

So to sum up: 1) Hide them from yourself/make it difficult to reach them. I keep all of my chocolates from easter and halloween in a bucket on top of the cupboards. The only way to get it down is to grab a long-handled spoon and smack it down, and usually my pride in not looking completely ridiculous wins over the need for chocolate. Usually ;) 2) Don't keep any in the house at all - you can wean yourself off and pare down your cravings by making them wholly inaccesible. I can't have jelly in the house, myself - there's usually a PB&J massacre within a day of bringing home a jar. 3) Buy only what you intend to consume. I take a walk every day on my lunch, and usually stop into the store on the way back for a treat. What I buy is what I get, so as long as I'm careful about what I buy, I get a treat without going overboard. |

| Vegetarian | Veg*ns, do your friends and family cater to your needs? | Aug 22 2008 15:35 (UTC) |
4 |
I wouldn't ask a vegetarian person to cook meat for me because it's not a question of reciprocation, it's a question of consideration for a person's morals. If, somehow, I found vegetables offensive or couldn't eat them, then yes, I would expect someone who invited me over to make accomodations for me. However, since I *like* vegetables, I'd have no problem going and eating a veggie meal with someone else. If someone decided they were going to do all dairy-based foods, and knew I was lactose intolerant, and didn't accomodate that, I'd feel slighted for sure. Likewise, when someone comes to my house, I try to consider what they can and will eat when I cook for them. Veggie deals for vegetarians, meat and potatoes for others, or I have a friend who hates seasonings and I cook chicken with lemon juice for him. It's simply being considerate of what they won't eat, not a matter of making meals to accomodate what they will eat. Since I'll eat just about anything, I'm pretty happy wherever I go :) |

Original Post by pgeorgian: Have to say I agree with Pgeorgian here. Walking is a great place to start for people who otherwise have a hard time commiting to an activity. It's easy, it's free, and people are generally born with the equipment built-in to do it. Walking beats the crap out of sitting at my office chair, and standing up to cook is only marginally better than sitting down to do it. For a person like me, for whom the lifestyle changes had to come gradually in order for them to stick, taking my lunch hour to go walking through the neighborhood has helped me lose 35 lbs so far. To sum up: thppt. (yes I recognize my terrific maturity) |
