Fitness How do you lift weights for an hour at a time? Jul 21 2008

My back day is short.  ussualy about 30 min. I do about  four or five different free weight and cable pull downs and rows.

My other dyas are the biggies for me at nearly 2 hours.  First I target the chest with the bench, then flys, then some cable exercises to target different areas of the pec.  Next I do my shoulders with some shrugs and usually one or two more deltoid exercises.  Then I do a couple for bis and three or four for tris.  I try to do forearms nightly.

I have not been working my legs too much lately because my knees have been acting up :(

I wouldn't fret too much.  As long as you see a change and feel a change it really doesn't matter how much you weigh.  I have only lost a couple lbs in the past few months since I started hitting the gym and lifting.  I feel great and I have lost two inches off of my waist line.  My arms are bigger and my chest and stomach are flatter.  I just haven't lost much weight and I couldn't care less because I feel great and I am seeing results.  I'll take lower body fat % over weight loss any day.  Keep on truckin and you will keep seeing results!!

Fitness Working Lower Abs/ Losing Belly Fat Apr 28 2008

Working your abs will strengthen and enlargen them, sure, but it will also push out your belly fat, making your belly even bigger. Don't waste your time.

This seems like strange advice. I have seen some body builders that have poofed out abs and look like they may have some crazy super resistance routine for them. However for most people I would say that working their abs will only tighten their muscle structure. Eventually with a lot of dedication your abs will start building OUT but it won't happen in any short amount of time so you can stop I guess if it is getting out of control. But by that time you might be at the BF % that you are after and already have the stomach that can take a direct hit from a cannon ball. Might as well keep working those abs while losing belly fat at the same time. Just because you can't see your abs doesn't mean that you won't benefited by working them (i.e. not a waste of time). My 2 cents.

This guy that works at the gym has me on two exercises for my abs. The first works the upper and middle abs.

- Lay down on the ab rack thing that holds your legs at the knee (make sure that it is a zero incline) with a 6lb (increase as you get stronger) long bar held straight back behind your head level with your body. Start rotating the bar forward towards your knees slowly and raise your torso slowly, keeping your lower back on the pad.  Your shoulders will only be less than a foot off of the pad and full crunch.

I told the guy at the gym that I had a lot of lower back pain when doing abs and he suggested this and it works for me. Keep your lower back down and go slow and you shouldn't get much if any back pain. The second works the lower abs, and it is just knee lifts on the vertical rack. I do two sets of each until I can't do anymore. These are the first exercises that I have found that I really feel the burn in my abs and not in my lower back.

I love when people say that they are afraid of looking bulky.  I guess these people think that as soon as you start lifting it just gets out of control with little effort.  Well you can amass any amount of muscle that you want and then maintain.  Moderation, what a notion.  I personally love to see some muscles on a lady.  Especially back and abs, woohoo.

Weight Loss Anyone else hate when people weigh themselves everyday? Apr 10 2008

nah I don't hate it.  I weigh in every morning and log the weight in.  Whether my weight goes up or down, the trend line is still going down and has been for a while.  I go off of the trend line mostly but that doesn't mean that I can't be proud of myself for hitting a new low weight.  But yeah taking a smash makes a big difference sometimesXD

I always told myself that all these people going to the gym were all a bunch of self obsessed weirdos with nothing better to do and I had no interest in working out to lose weight.  I was only going to watch wheat I ate to lose a few.  Man, that wasn't long ago and now I see what the draw is.   My wife kinda coerced me into joining a gym and now I can't really picture not going to the gym.  Weird change of pace for me but now I do 4is miles on the treadmill 4-5 nights a week and love it.

I don't have anything to compare the test to but it sounds about right i guess.  It says that I am:

You have 13.3% body fat.

You have 29.4 Pounds of fat and 192.6 Pounds of lean (muscle, bone, body water)

Even with 2% +-  I'll take those results.

I found that by drinking a ton of water I could skip the afternoon pot of coffee.  I can't speculate what your water drinking habits may be like  but it gave me an energy boost in the afternoon.  I have to pee often but at least I can stay awake :)  If that doesn't help at all, perhaps reevaluate caloric intake??

for me it is always water.  I get sluggish and get headaches if I don't drink a ton of water.  And If i really get a sweat on at the gym sometimes I get dry lips, even as humid as it right now in FL.  I am assuming that this too is an effect of not enough water.

I've been doing this for 2 weeks now and I have lost a little over 3 lbs.  I am trying to get rid of 10-20 stubborn lbs of fat and throw on some muscle while I'm at it.  So far so good.  I am Male 6'5" 221 ish lbs.  I eat 1850 - 2300 cal a day and hit the gym 5-6 nights a week for the treadmill for avg of 3.5 miles, and soon weight training.  My BMR is 2200 ish depending where I look so I try to keep the cals under 2400.  It has been working and I am already feeling the difference in energy and definition in my legs, next stop chest and abs, then I will never wear a shirt again....ever

Weight Loss Worried About Metabolism Apr 03 2008

Between the time I was your age and 21 I probably grew about 4 inches.  So you can imagine that I must have put on some weight.  At the time i didn't even have calorie counting on my mind, heck I didn't even eat well.   So I think that even if you just concentrate on eating good foods, and make sure that you have enough energy to get through the day, you will be fine and most likely suprised at the results you get by not obsessing.  If you want to make sure that you can get all of the height that your genes will allow, you better not starve yourself.  Just eat, and eat good foods and you will have a leg up on 90% of your peers.

I met my gf (now my wife) 5 years ago in college and we ate out alot, combine that with the business that we started (very sedentary) and boom, I gained about 35 lbs.  I didn't even know I was chunky until I saw some pictures from a cruise that I went on.  Then with some improv dieting and no exercise i managed to get down to 217.  Then it was back up to 225 as of a few weeks ago, now with CC AND exercise I hope to get slim again, about 210 ish give or take.  SO yeah i got chubby by eating a lot of bad food and not moving enough.

Weight Loss Is drinking too much coffee bad for my weight loss goals? Apr 02 2008
21:35 (UTC)

I used to have my morning coffee, and a couple of months ago I started having an afternoon pot as well (about 5:30) in order to stay awake.  Well I stopped having to do this about a week ago.  I don't know exactly what to attribute my new found energy to, but I have a couple of ideas.   I am in my second week at the gym now.  I go 5 nights a week to do about 45 - 55 min on the treadmill (about3-4 miles).  So I can imagine that this would have helped.  Also what lined up exactly to the day of me needing less coffee was that I really upped my water intake.  Like 4 liters a day to my best estimate.  I pee a ton more and more often, but I do like my energy level so I'm gonna keep doing what I'm doing.  So I would suggest just upping your water intake.

hi karen,

I'm adam and I started 10 days ago, and joined up at the gym a few days before that. I right now I am about 222-224 lbs depending on the day, but showing a downward trend which is pretty sweet. I would like to get down to 210, but I don't even know if that is possible with my frame (6'5", 55" around the chest). So I am in the 10-15 lb boat too :) I never really kept track of my calories until I found this site when I was searching for how many calories I was supposed to eat throughout the day. Now I am very aware of what I eat and have way more energy throughout the day. No more second pot of coffee at 5:30 to keep from napping.

I have been doing 3-4 miles on the treadmill 5-6 nights a week, but I want to mix in 3 days of weight training instead of cardio to get buff while I am at it. I eat between 1950 and 2300 cals a day, my burn meter says I burn 2700 cals a day but that seems a little high to me. So after a week and a half I am seeing a positive change in appearance, attitude and energy!!

Foods Oatmeal? Mar 29 2008

I make my oatmeal for my wife and I (2 portions) with:

1.75C soy milk (makes it creamier in my opinion)

1C quaker oats

4tsp brown sugar

cinnamon to taste

Slice a banana on top when it is just about done and mix it in just before serving so it is warm but not mushy.

This is delicious for us and comfortable amount of calories for us!

I think you seem to be on the right track.  You need fats in your diet anyway, and if you are going to have fat it might as well be from olive oil.  If you are doing the CC then just log the oil that you use and remain within your acceptable range.  If you are really worried about the calories, just eat the whites (11 calories, no fat).  Add low cal veggies and mushrooms, and you get a filling meal with little to no saturated fat and cholesterol.  Lol, i have yet to try this because I have just started dieting myself.   But I will strive to stay fed and happy so I can maintain my weight loss (2 lbs gone already after 1.5 weeks) and not fall back into old bad habits.

Foods has anyone tried mahi mahi or shark? Mar 26 2008
14:05 (UTC)

at the reserautnt that I used to cook at we made mahi by lightly seasoning and baking until about halfway done in a pie pan with a 1/4 inch of water in the bottom. About halfway through cooking, top with crushed pineapple and crushed, toasted macadamia nuts and finish it off so the fish is perfectly cooked and the topping is nicely browned. I don't know how that falls into your diet.

For the shark you could cut up some red onion into 1/2" long x 1/16" strips. Mix with just enough mayo or miricle whip to make a thick paste. To that you can add seasoning to taste and lemon juice. Top the shark with that and some crushed cracker crumbs and bake. Do this after the shark comes off the grill and is about 1/2-3/4 cooked.

Again I don't know how this falls into your diet but you can adjust the ingredients to fit in:)

ah, I forget that most people work out earlier in the day or after work. I work late, have dinner around 8-8:30 then get back to work and hit the gym around 11. I may have to catch a 6:00 or 7:00 class before dinner to even things out a bit. I was just thinking very "my schedule" and not what normal scheduled people do. I have no excuse for not going earlier, I own my business and work from home. It is just when I feel comfortable for now, because no one is at the gym at those hours and I am new, so I just go with my wife.   Also I am sure that I will give up the crap food all together eventually because I know it will make me feel crappy, oh well no real loss I guess.

Weight Loss Do you weigh the right weight? Mar 23 2008

I don't understand how I can ever weigh 187.  I am a smidge over 6'4" and 224 right now.  I can definitely loose 15 lbs of fat to be skin and muscles.  But by that time going from sedentary life to now exercising 4-5 times a week, I will be putting on more muscle weight (joined the gym this week, first timer).   At most I think I can hope to get down to a lean 210.  But I don't have delusions of rippling abs, I just want to lose my man-boobies and belly.  I used to be 255 and lost the weight by cutting the crap out of my diet to get down to 220.  I got lazy and started eating pizza and wings often again and got back up to 225ish, this is my first time doing the CC and exercise so I guess I will see the difference pretty dramatically.

Health & Support how would you deal with this? Mar 23 2008

Hi there,

There is definitely a communication issue here.  Your family needs to understand your goals and what it takes to get there.  Your uncle probably doesn't understand that his metabolism and daily activities allow him to binge and maintain a weight, while other people are different and may not be able to.   It might be worth your while to get a small fridge to keep in your bedroom, full of sensible snacks, fruit, bottled water, or your portion of fish and explain to your family that you want to be sure that it is there when you need it so you do not have to rebound into bad habits.  If you buy these foods your self, then I wouldn't consider that hoarding.  It is more like treatment for a condition.  If you are assertive about it and your family is sensible then they can respect that.  If your uncle lets 6oz of fish tarnish your relationship with him, then for your own health you need to do whatever you can to improve the situation.  I can't pretend that I understand your situation fully, but I hope everything works out for you :)
