Fitness What exercise or anything that i can do for my thighs not to be fat but NOT MUSCULAR? Mar 30 2009

Try a cycle class at the gym... it may be hard at first but after a few classes, you will see some results.  Just make sure you really push yourself and listen to the instructor.

handful of unsalted mixed nuts, beef jerky(watch the salt intake though), protein shake with rice milk, peanut butter sandwich, tuna in sunflower oil over  salad- no dressing (the oil of the tuna should suffice)... Those are some of my favorites... If you are trying to gain weight, make sure you are drinking one protein shake a day.

Fitness Running shoes, which is best? Mar 17 2009

Mizuno's are great for women... the only thing is, make sure you read what the shoe is meant for... more or less stability, light or heavy weight, over or normal pronation... I tend to lean more towards the Wave Nirvana or Wave Inspire series to train in and Wave Precision series for road racing.  Note: I have noticed that Mizuno's do break down pretty fast.  If you are looking for a more long lasting shoe then I would go with Brooks... Adrenaline or Axiom 3 series.  Most of my guy friends use Nike or Asics and sometimes Mizuno's (except like I said before, they break down easier)

Oh don't worry lostincyberspace... I do say yes sometimes but I usually stick to a little piece of dark chocolate or a handful of dark chocolate peanut m&ms... which satisfies my cheat urge and sweet tooth!!!

Good job to everyone else who resists!

Oh skinny jeans... I have 3 pairs... except I don't like to wear any of them... Unless there is nothing left to wear.  With that being said, when I do wear them, I have to wear them with heels or I feel short and weird looking.  I would say, if you do ever buy a pair, make sure you buy either black or dark wash.  I feel your pain though.  The only brand I have bought are from PacSun.  If you haven't tried them yet, try em! I went up a size so they wouldn't be rediculously tight.  And as long as I wash them, then they fit perfectly snug.

I usually hard boil a dozen eggs and eat them throughout the week as a snack... I only eat the egg white which packs in almost 4 grams of protein in a measly 17 calories and no fat!

low fat cottage cheese

tofu- although Im not a big fan of.

greek yogurt- I have heard people add a little whey protein powder to give it a better taste and add protein

Fitness Back pain from Spinning? Feb 25 2009

I go to spin class about 3 times a week.  I had the same problem at the beginning... I felt like someone was squeezing my shoulders and I couldnt relax, even when I went to sleep.   I decided to go to the chiropractor and he took xrays of my spine.  One of my discs was wearing away in my neck area.  I go to the chiropractor 3 times a week now to get adjusted.  He said it will take a few weeks for the alignment to completely make the pain go away but I felt great after the first couple times.  But I do agree that relaxed shoulders during the class is key.  My instructor reminds us a million times through class to stay relaxed and let your legs and core do the work!

Calorie Count 1200 Calories?? Feb 24 2009

I would say to up your calorie intake to 1200.  It could be as easy as half a turkey sandwich or a baked sweet potato or just snack on vegetables.  Watch out for fruit because it will add a lot of sugars...  I really don't know what you are eating but eating (healthy) constantly all day will boost your metabolism more and be more effective than a very low 1000 calorie day.

Your goal date keeps getting pushed back because you are probably not logging any weight loss. If you aren't logging that you are losing weight right now then it is assuming you are maintaining right now which would in fact set your goal date back.

If you are having trouble losing weight right now then it is prob due to the low calorie intake.  If you are truly satisfied with 1000 calories per day, try eating a little more every other day.  It confuses your body and keeps your metabolism up.

Weight Loss What can I do so that I lose weight in my inner thighs so they don't touch and a TINY butt!? Feb 19 2009

Sorry but no exercise will actually make you lose weight in your thighs.  Your body decides where you lose weight when there is a calorie deficit. Unfortunately for most women, the thighs are usually the last place for the fat to disappear from.  So basically, keep up the cardio and you will eventually get there!  I always tell myself, I didn't put the weight on overnight, so why am I expecting it to come off overnight!  On the other hand, it is still good to adductor exercises and lunges or squats so when you lose the fat, you will see nice sculpted muscles.

I recently asked my cycle instructor what I should do because I am not losing any weight and I have been keeping my calories between 1200-1300 and working out 6 times a week for at least an hour. 4 days of interval/cardio workouts, and 2 days on intense weight training with a 30 min cardio warmup.   He first asked me what I ate... I was proud to tell him about all the fruits, vegetables, yogurts, soups, lean cuisine (when Im lazy) whole wheat and grains that I eat.  Thinking he would be as confused as I was, I told him a typical day menu.  He started breaking everything down.  Basically what it came down to was that I was consuming too much sugars (which will convert into fat easier) and salts (which retains all my water weight).  I started looking back at my food logs and noticing how much sugar and salt I was actually consuming. It was an insane amount.  He said that fruits are good but only right after a workout or something.  I guess I thought I was always picking the best choice by grabbing an apple or banana when im a little hungry.   Now I go for sliced cucumbers, sugar snap peas, carrots (which I hate but force myself to eat), celery sticks, and fresh broccoli and cauliflower.  He said NO to any lean cuisines or canned soups.  He also said that I should have at least 20g of protein at each meal.  I am now eating a hard boiled egg white with almost everymeal to reach that 20g.   Also, he said to be aware of high fatty foods like peanut butter and mixed nuts because it is REALLY easy to over eat.  Basically, if it is too tempting to overeat, just avoid.

Sorry for the long answer.  Hope this helps a little!

Motivation Any athletes getting back in the game after an injury? Nov 21 2008

I feel your pain.  I ran track and cross country in college and played a stupid pick up game of 5 on 5 soccer one day AND dislocated my ankle.  I fractured a few little bones but luckily did not need surgery.  However, I was on crutches for 2 months and couldn't do anything! I gained like 15 pounds.  It was horrible.  Like you said, my athletic eating schedule got the best of me.  Once I was able to put pressure on it, I started doing some stationary bike so I would get my heart rate up and going again before I started putting my full weight on it.  Needless to say, the season was over before I recovered and what sucked more was that it was my senior year. I graduated, moved to another city, and work at a desk all day. This happened a year ago and I started running off and on but was too inconsistent to lost the weight.  I finally got a personal trainer about a month ago...  I am starting to train for road races (5K, 10k, half marathons).  Everytime I don't feel like going to the gym now... I just remember how miserable I was when all I could do was sit at home!

Your injury seems worse than mine so expect a very tight ankle and make sure you do not ride off any pain.  I had to go back and get physical therapy a couple months ago because my range of motion was still limited.  I still get bruising when I work out a lot.  My injury happened exactly one year ago.

Im glad you aren't waiting as long as I did to finally get back to normal!  Keep it up!

That is when I turn to a nice big salad full of all my fave veggies! (very light on the dressing)  Also I agree with a handful of raw almonds or unsalted mixed nuts.  Sometimes I eat a serving of original beef jerky.... high in protein, low in fat, low in carbs and it fills you up!  Also, what are you eating for breakfast and lunch... minimize your carb intake during then so you don't have to be without by the time dinner comes.  I start with one egg and one egg whites topped with fresh salsa in the morning when I know I am going to eat a bigger carb heavy lunch or dinner.  Hope some of this helps!

Actually, I do not think you did too hard of a workout... it is perfectly normal to be sore for two days after a workout.  Usually the second day is worse.  The best way to get rid of the pain is to light exercise... either walking or jogging or even biking.  Just wanted to let you know that it is normal and actually a good sign that you did enough.  Most people do not push hard enough during workouts and overestimate the amount of burned calories so keep it up!
Fitness Running/heart rate 'endurance' question Jun 20 2006

Congrats on your 30 min runs!  Believe it or not, it is a great accomplishment because now you can do many things with that.  I have been running for 7 years competitively.  My suggestion is put the heart rate moniter away every other day.  Do a 30 min run based on feelings... start slow and if you can, speed up then slow down a little and then speed up again.  Don't worry about your heart rate at all!  It helps you figure your body out.  Then do a run using your heart rate moniter and concentrate on keeping it in your zone.  Eventually your feelings runs will match your heart rate runs.  At that time, you will probably be able to go longer and harder... It takes time!

But remember every other day, listen to your body!
Fitness Eating Before Of After Exercising? Jun 20 2006
20:15 (UTC)
Personally, I can eat a full meal and do a full workout 30min after.  To me I feel better if I eat before and according to what I have learned, whatever works for your body.  Try before and after and see which one you feel better with.  I read that eating a few pieces of beef jerky after or a glass of fat free chocolate milk is a good recovery snack.
Fitness does jogging benefit my abs?? Jun 20 2006

I hate to break it to everyone but crunches won't help your stomach shrink until the fat is gone.  Running does help slim you down and gain leaner muscle but it won't give you a six pack.  You could have the greatest abs right now but the fat is covering it up.  The best thing to do is do full body weight training 2-3 times a week along with 4-5 days of cardio. Muscle helps keep your metabolic rate up causing you to burn more calories at rest.  Concentrating on just your abs daily wont do anything.  You need to counteract the muscle by working your back also.  Same goes with every muscle... when doing pushups, you should counteract it with dips and when working quads, you should counteract it with hams.  Give your muscles time to heal between workouts... even your abs.

Pilates is a great way to work your core.  Many of the exercises are made to counteract muscles.  Pilates is far better than crunches.

Also my secret full body workout is when you are done running, find a hill nearby and do lunges up them(as many as you can do).  It will be the icing on the cake and your legs will feel strong and firm.  It may be hard at first but after 2weeks of doing this, you will see a difference in your legs and glutes. ** Look online and find a demonstration to do a lunge correctly otherwise it will not work and you could injure yourself**
Fitness should i stop weight lifting?? Jun 20 2006
19:44 (UTC)
I have a similar problem... as soon as I start lifting weights regularly, I feel like I gain inches... as a runner, a large amount of muscle mass is not wanted!  What I do is squats with no weights to my favorite song every morning.  My own weight is just enough to work my hams, quads and glutes and gain LEAN muscle mass rather than bulk up... also if you want to lift weights, think "more reps, less weight" Only put enough weight to finish 2 sets of 25.  The more reps the better!
Foods eggs vs egg whites Jun 01 2006

Personally I like to add one whole egg and 2 egg whites so you get the taste of the yoke but still have the majority of egg whites.  I live by, "Dont cut anything out of your diet, minimize it!"

Also as a reply to elin, yes it is a lot of protein but there are other ways to get protein like whey protein shakes and protein bars. I usually drink the protein shakes or eat the protein bars when I get the sugar craving... its my trick!
