Weight Loss I invented my own diet and it works. I've lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks. Oct 09 2009

I know that this diet isn't really healthy but its not healthy being fat either and I'm only going to stay on it for a few more weeks to lose more weight. I don't think its as bad or unbalanced though as people have made out as it contains protein, carbs, vitamins, calcium etc

By the way I know from experience that its not true that if you lose weight fast you are going to automatically put it back on. I have a friend who went on a crash diet and lost about 40 pounds really fast and has stayed really skinny for over a year since. Its probably just people who go back to eating what they ate to get fat in the first place when they lose weight who put it all back on.

I have tried for 3 ears to lose weight healthily but I can't do it. The process is just too slow, and I just give up and put back whatever I lost after I try for a bit.

I don't eat breakfast, and don't like any vegetables except sweetcorn and potatos. I cut out wholegrains and carbohydrates because that is supposed to make you lose weight fast.

I don't feel like I'm starving. Its only late at night that I feel ravenous.

Its not like I'm just eating an apple and a can of tuna all day. Surely thats whats meant by a starvation diet.

You don't say how much you're eating, or how old you are.  Both of those can impact any suggestions people might have for you.

Clint

I am 27. I have been eating about 2000 calories a day on workout days which means I should have about 1500 calorie deficit as according to stats I would burn 3500 calories in total a day. When I don't exercise I only eat about 1500 calories. I have had the odd when I have eaten a lot but not often.

I ought to have lost over a stone according to the Maths of it.

Even if breakfast does speed up your metabolism how much by?

If you eat 300 or 400 calories a day for breakfast is it going to speed up your metabolism enough so that you burn off 300 or 400 extra calories a day. I doubt it.

Probably not healthy, but I can't bring myself to eat breakfast until I'm up and moving for a few hours.

I dunno. If it was so healthy to eat when you've just got up wouldn't it make you feel better as opposed to the opposite?

I have much more energy all morning if I don't eat anything and eating breakfast makes me feel really groggy and lethargic, which is surely unhealthy. Maybe breakfast being good for you is a myth thats been marketed by cereal companies.

oh and i'd like to add, i have had mine tested in the past...it said roughly the same thing...about 1213 calories burned at rest...i did a test where i sat stationary for 15 minutes and just breathed into a mass to record my oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide output at the physiology lab on campus, so that makes me feel more comfortable with the estimates.

Jeez. It must be terrible having a BMR so low and much harder to stay thin than for a tall person.

"A couple of months ago I just wanted to be 125 pounds and I thought my life would be great once I got there." I think this is the problem. You thought being 125 would make your life great. But when you reached 125 you realized the only thing that had changed was the way your clothes fit. You expected losing weight to change your life, but all that changed was your shirt size.

No actually the only thing I feel that needs fixing in my life is my weight. I changed it up on my first post to make more sense. Everything else in my life is great I am really just dissatisfied with my body.

You don't look like you need to lose any weight from you photos Laughing

You are assuming that an overweight person is less likely to find a mate and reproduce (which I dont' think is a very valid assumption - there are enough examples to disprove that) - so it would be a selection for the phenotype of overweight.

And that's all assuming that my fiance wouldn't marry me if I were overweight. But he's not that shallow.

Theres plenty of examples of obese people who have kids of course but that doesn't mean they're not less likely to have kids on average.

Its true that some people are not shallow about looks but you've got to admit theres still loads of people around who are shallow and simply would never consider having a relationship with someone overweight.

And almost everyone thinks thinner people look more attractive than obese people and given this I don't see why its not logical that a thin person is more likely to be in a relationship at a given time, and as a result more likely to be having kids.

And theres some overweight people who die in their 20s due to heart disease or something and don't get round to having kids, which probably to some extent reduces the number of obese people who pass on their genes a bit too.

xavier - what you are describing is Lamarckism, or the inheritance of acquired characteristics, which has been discredited, in favor of Darwinism.

Thin people's kids have just as much ability to gain weight as an obese person's kid - it's about how much they eat and move. There is no selective pressure that is going to favor the reproduction of people who are less able to gain weight.

I think genes play some part in whether you get fat, although lifestyle is a big part too.

Some people do have a slower or faster metabolism.

Some people seem to just be programmed to carry on eating long after they have eaten enough if nice food is available whereas some just only eat as much as necessary.

Or do you think these traits don't have any genetic factor?

It kind of surprises me when I see these 300+ pound women with kids coz I wonder whos ever gonna want to sleep with them in order for them to do so.

There must be at least a higher percentage of slim people who get married and have kids tho than obese people.

Weight Loss Weight loss slower than GAINING? Jun 15 2009

Our bodies are working fine. The problem is more to do with the food available. For those of us fortunate enough to live in the developed countries we have a constant supply of relatively cheap food. We even have seasonal foods available to us out of season (strawberries in winter etc). In the past much of what we would consume would be dictated by the seasons and the availability of food.

Due to our sedentary lives and over consumption of food, our bodies do the natural thing, store the excess for a time when there is not much food around, which for most of us doesn't come.

At least thats my pennies worth on the matter :)

Even if it wasn't a problem in the past, its still basically a genetic flaw from the point of view of humans today as we would stand a better chance of a longer live if we never became obese however much we ate.

I would guess our bodies are built to gain weight and keep it much more easily then lose weight simply for survival reasons.  While it would be really nice to be able to lose weight easily these days, if that had been the case in the past humans would have had a much worse chance of survival.

Far more people die of obesity related illness than starvation today, not to mention anorexia, bulimia, depression and a host of other problems are caused by this storing fat thing. So as a survival trait storing fat seems to be proving pretty unsuccessful. If you ask me our bodies have it all back to front.

Weight Loss Breakfast: Is it really that important? May 08 2009
19:06 (UTC)

I can't stand eating first thing in the morning.

It just makes me feel really bloated and uncomfortable, if I just go and eat before I've been up 2 or 3 hours and am fully awake.

I don't think eating breakfast can be good for you when you just feel much better without it, and waiting til midday to eat.

When I'm running on the treadmill I find it helps to keep my eye off the display and watch the tvs in the gym.

If I look down at the display all the time to check how long I have run for yet and how close I am to my goal I tense up and it gets harder.

If you don't look at the time and think about other things the time goes faster and more effortlessly.

Weight Loss Number Of People Overweight In Different States Apr 01 2009

It doesn't really surprise me so many people being overweight and obese tbh

After all its easy to be overweight and much harder to stay thin, which takes effort and self discipline.

Theres been far more than enough food available for decades in America certainly in the 80s and 90s, so I find it surprising how obesity statistics are so low back then rather than surpising that they are higher now tbh.

are these for real?!

asparagus
beet
broccoli
green cabbage
carrot
cauliflower
celery root
celery chicory
hot chili peppers
cucumber
dandelion
endive
garden cress
garlic
green beans
zucchini apple
cranberries
grapefruit
lemon mango
orange
pineapple raspberries
strawberries
tangerine
lamb's lettuce
lettuce
onion
papaya
radishes
spinach
turnip

I don't think most of those are negative calorie foods but celery and lettuce may well be.

Anything your body can't process at all must be negative calorie tho, as it uses calries to take it thorough your bosy but doesn't get any back.

Try eating coins or plastic Smile

Weight Loss Alcohol and weight loss Mar 26 2009

It seems to be the case that in practice people who binge drink regularly don't sem to put on weight or as much weight as they should in theory when you add up the calories.

I read somewhere that its not that the alcohol raises your metabolism but that after a heavy nights drinking your body has to work really hard to repair the damage done, which uses up a load of calories, when your to the point of having a bad hangover.

xavier, there's nothing adaptive about obesity.  evolution didn't do that to us; we did it to ourselves.

I don't really agree because its evolution made us the way we are in that we put on weight too easily and crave unhealthy food too much.

I don't think that storing fat is a bad thing, I mean what if there was a huge sudden famine you know?

Try telling that to people who weigh over 250 pounds. Fact is you're far mor elikely to die of obesity related illness than anything resembling starvation.

I'd rather be skinny and unhealthy than fat and healthy though tbh Smile

I will generally drink 20 - 30 units one day at the weekend.

The chocolate I will eat a whole bar that is like 1000 calories in one day, and probably do this about once every 4 days.

I have been trying to quit the chocolate and energy drinks for months but I just last 2 or 3 days then cravings and headache get bad so I go back to it. I guess I just have to put up with that for a bit to get over it but I'm not very self disciplined.

Health & Support how many calories do u binge? Mar 17 2009

I seem to have a natural ability to eat loads of food in one go, more than most people can, not really a good thing.

I probably eat 2000 - 3000 calories in one go when I binge, perhaps more, which I do mostly when I feel down.

Weight Loss weight loss w/o calorie restricting? Mar 10 2009

I believe it is possible to lose weight through exercise alone and eating a lot of junk but you have to do bloody loads of vigorous exercise to do it.

Professional athletes consume loads of food just to maintain their weight - maybe 4000 or 5000 calories a day, probably more than most obese people do.

I f you just eat normal meals and do a moderate amount of exercise I think u probably just stay the same.

that the first ten pounds is the hardest to lose?

I don't know where you heard that but everything I've heard suggests that the first 10 pounds are the easiest. When you start a weight loss regime I thinkyour body will lose more weight to start with but less as it gets used a new lifestyle.

Actually sticking to a diet and exercise is probably hardest in the first couple of weeks though and easier as you get used to it.

Weight Loss Fast Metabolism Aug 01 2008
18:20 (UTC)

I think its much easier and nicer to have to eat more than the average person because you have a fast metabolism, than have to eat less than you want all the time or you'll get fat. From a health perspective its also much harder to get all the nutrition you need on less calories. Its harder to get a balanced diet on 1500 calories than 3000 so a fast metabolism is healthier. I think I have a slower than average metabolism and really hate it . I have to do loads of exercise to maintain my weight, and put on weight very easily. When I injured a couple of months back I put on 10 pounds in 6 weeks just from not being able to do any exercise for that time, even though I was only eating about 2000 calories a day most of the time. People with fast metabolisms have a diamond gift from God imo, in not putting on weight easily. If they really want to put on weight can't they just stuff themselves with boxes of chocolates.
