Hey Jess, welcome! I hear you completely about not being lazy. I kind of have a similar vague goal: to make good choices. Like not to eat so much that I'm miserable, not spending every waking moment vegging out, not procrastinating.... Yeah, it's hard to stick with that. Maybe we could have a thing in our group where we would pick one little way to achieve our goal each day or week. That way maybe it would be easier to stick with? I definitely did NOT have a good choices day today. Sometimes I think I forget that it's okay to stop eating before I feel gross and overly stuffed. Hmm, that might be a good lesson for tomorrow. |

5togo, About the water: yes. I used to love just plain water but now I hate it. I moved to the country and our well water was gross and I guess I lost my taste for it. I have the terrible habit of drinking only flavored drinks like diet soda, crystal light, tea and decaf coffee. I know I need to kick that, but right now it just seems like the least of my worries. Also, Blue, to not have the line break, try hitting shift at the same time as you hit enter to go to a new line. And I think it's a good idea to weigh in. I weigh myself already, but maybe making it public would be a good incentive for me. So here it is: Starting weight: 139.6 Gotta admit, tomorrow's weight is gonna be a doozy, though. Today was my mom's b-day and I spend all day with her, eating out for lunch and then we cooked a huge family meal together. It was fun and delicious, but way too much for my will power. Good thing tomorrow's a new day, huh?

Hey everybody -- So, how's it going? Like I said before, I'm kind of at a point where I had totally lost my mind and couldn't stop eating everything in sight for about 2, 2.5 months. Since coming back to CC it's been better, but I will admit that I ALREADY had a night out where I drank WAY too much beer and finished off the night with a heapin' helping of pancakes and french fries (who even eats those together??!). Ugh. Not exactly what I would call a good choice! But I didn't let it throw me off, so I guess there's the silver lining. I know it will be a while before I feel any lighter/slimmer or notice that my clothes are fitting better again, but already I'm starting to feel better about my body. My body and I have not been friends lately, so it's nice to change that attitude a little. Oh, and here's my new motivation: I only have one nice suit - and it fit me when I was at my slimmest...and I think I'm going to have a job interview here soon, hopefully in the next 3 weeks. Will it be enough time to slim back down to sqeeze my booty into those pants? I guess I'll have to try my best and just find out!! |

Hey guys! No, I didn't forget, I just got distracted with the weekend, too. I had a rough night out on Friday and had WAY too much beer and then greasy diner food after. Oops, not the way I wanted to start this out! I spent the rest of the weekend kind of sulking, but now I'm just gonna move on. Anyway, I'm Lydia, I'm 26 and I've been married about 5 and a half years. No kids...still trying to get my own stuff sorted! We do have 3 cats, though, and I basically treat them like kids, so there is that. I'm a lawyer, but barely! I just graduated and passed the bar and I don't have a job yet (which is why I've been so angsty I think). I am DYING to find a job. My husband is a photographer and has been dreaming forever of starting a studio, but I have to get a job first and in the meantime he's supporting both of us working at a coffee shop. So yeah. It's nice to meet you Danielle and Ashley and I hope everyone else will come back and introduce themselves, too. I think it would be great if there were maybe a half dozen or so people who really want to be involved and support each other. I don't have any ideas for names, though. ;) |

Hi, I'd like to join, if you'll have me. I don't want to be annoying, though -- I'm kind of a skinny girl looking to lose about 20 pounds. However, I really do need help. I gained all 20 of those extra pounds in the last 2 to 3 months, and I'm really having troble controling what I eat and being motivated to exercise at all. Essentially, I let some emotionally troubles throw me off my healthy course, and now I need major help getting back on track - I just need some people to be supportive, positive influences on me to make healthy choices. I dunno if that is what you're thinking, but if so, I'd love to be support for you. :) |

Yeah, I want in on this :) You're right that it's hard to commit when everyone is saying "eh, you're fine." But the goal is to be happy with yourself, right? So at some point, you have to drawn the line for yourself. I'll actually have to be the BIG loser here - I'm aiming for 20 pounds. Okay, but here's the sad part: I gained those 20 pounds in about 2 months!!! UGH! I'm obviously on a self destructive path right now and I need help getting back into the right frame of mind where food is not the enemy. My goal is to be back being happy and in my normal, skinny clothes by Valentines Day! |

| Fitness | My butt has many issues | Nov 05 2009 17:33 (UTC) |
|
Not to be discouraging, jkillin, but it's true that to some extent, we're stuck with the hand we're dealt. Even when my upper body was skinny as a string bean, I still had more than my share of jiggle in the booty - my body clung onto the butt fat for dear life! I had to get down to maybe 12% body fat before I saw much shrinkage in the butt and thigh area, and honestly, that percentage is just not realistic for a lot of women. I started doing various squats and lunges with heavy weights (30 in each hand), and my husband said it made my booty look great, but I will never have the small, round bubble butt of my dreams. Shame :( It's my inclination to say that you can lose the booty if you lose ALL the fat, but be prepared to lose the boobs, the arms fat, and everything else first. In the end, my only advice is to work with what you've got. If the rest of your body is how you want it to be, you might be happier in the long run if you can just accept the booty. |

| Fitness | ChaLEAN extremists... should I buy weights or resistance bands??? | Nov 05 2009 17:18 (UTC) |
3 |
Well, I would certainly say weights. When I did the bands, it felt like nothing or it felt awkward and like I was doing it wrong. But on the same token, weights are a MAJOR investment. I got the cheapest ones I could find: gold's gym from Walmart - but at $20/set, it can add up. I ended up with 4 sets that I modified to be 10, 15, 20, and 30 lbs each. I also have 3, 5, and 8 pounds for the cardio days. If I had it to do over, I might have waited until I could afford Powerblocks, which are by far considered the best adjustable weights. Chalean extreme is a great program and I know it helped me build muscle, but it ended up costing a lot and by the second month I was getting bored. But that's just my two cents. |

Hi All, Phox - I am so jealous of your strawberry overload! Fresh strawberries sound so delicious! I agree that it's a good sign that the fruit is showing up in the supermarkets. I can't wait until I can actually see the ground...and maybe green things will start to grow. So I want to let you all know that I am going to try and stay off CC for a while. One reason that you know about already is that I am trying to study for the bar and all the craziness that it entails, and I can't justify all the time I spend surfing around on this website when I should be studying (like now!!). I've also found that this site can actually be very negative (not this group, of course!! You all are awesome!) and sometimes it makes me negative, and it's just not very helpful. Some girl calling me anorexic and making fun of me was pretty much the last straw, so I'm going to try to focus on real-life relationships more. So anyway, I am not falling off the face of the earth, I'm just going to be focusing on non-internet things for a while. Karey, have fun on your cruise!! Sue, good luck with the renovations (and all the gardening!!). Mdillman, good luck on the novel. And Phox - and everyone else - good luck with maintenance. I'm sure whenever I make it back here, we'll all still be slim, healthy and lovely! Bye for now!! -Lydia |

| Foods | Been veggie for 3 years, want to start eating meat again - how!? | Mar 06 2009 16:40 (UTC) |

What has the internet done to us? Does having a screen between up give us license to be openly hostile and hateful? I guess I'm really glad that I don't have an eating disorder, because I imagine that if I did...well, some of the comments directed at me might have affected me negatively. I guess it's kind of a fun trip down memory lane to have people ridicule me for my body. It hasn't happened since the boys in junior high. Granted, they said it to my face, but it felt oddly the same. (ETA: wait, wait...I just looked again and realized that 2 of the things that are so revolting about me, my skin color and my bone structure, are actually things I have no control over whatsoever and have remained unchanged regardless of my weight. I don't know what to say. I can't even fathom the state of mind that would be required to ridicule someone based on things about their appearance, let alone things that they cannot control. I am legitimately hurt.) To Dana: Sorry for giving vegetarians a bad name. I hope someday people will not hate us and we can actually say whatever we want without ridicule. To Vancouver: Similarly, sorry for being an ineloquent vegan. It's hard to always be on my best behaviour. To the OP: Glad you enjoyed the scotch egg. Do what you've got to do. I hope eating remains a conscious and enjoyable exercise. |

I am really glad you enjoyed your burrito and had the willpower to stop at half!! Good job! One thought, though --- eventually you are going to have to "come out" to the people you work with or you will be stuck eating treats you don't really want forever. Maybe you aren't ready yet, but don't wait forever. Eating a burrito (even half) JUST because it was there and you felt guilty is potentially setting a bad precedent. You don't want to give yourself any opportunity or excuse to fail, and laying the blame on coworkers is just too convenient and easy. I hope you don't fret about the burrito, though. I bet it was delicious and totally worth it! (also, I can't give you definitive help on the burrito, as I don't eat egg, sausage, or cheese so I'm not super familiar with their calories, but I would guess maybe 1/2 of a full-sized breakfast burrito would be 320-360 cals??) |

Hey, you know what? Me crying and whining about my opinions as to what people should and shouldn't eat is no different from all the poo-poo'ers who try to make people feel bad for drinking diet soda or taking diet pills or eating trans fats or whatever. I answered her question in a helpful way (saying that meat does not make me sick, even after being vegan for years) and I stuck in my unsolicited opinion for good measure. Since we're so worried about the law, I'll note that providing unwelcome opinions is also generally not illegal. To me this all sounds like a lot of over-denial and guilty justification. Oh, and this, too: http://audubonmagazine.org/features0901/viewp oint.html And, to thow in a little guilty justification on my own part, I'll say it's hard to be morally assaulted all day every day. Yes, I have a passionate view on a controversial subject, and usually I keep my yap shut...but it just never stops and sometimes I lose it and blurt stuff (like now). I mean, pro-lifers don't have to deal with watching people get abortions every day at lunch time and talk about how delicious it is. Okay, enough of this. I'm sorry for being rude. To the OP, I wish you a lot of luck with your dietary choices, whatever they may be, but I do hope once you get your nutrition under control you'll see that being veg can be healthy and humane and you'll return to the fold. |

Yes, I am incredibly bored with food. I am in a total rut and eat the same quick/easy/low-cal stuff every day. Yesterday I had a bowl of chips and salsa, which I haven't allowed myself in ages, and it was actually really good. I've been trying to make food more interesting, but I don't have a lot of time, so I continue along in my rut. I just wanted to let you know that you're not the only one. |

Hi all, I'm glad to hear everyone is keeping busy. Phox and Sue, I'm sorry to hear your being frustrated by those last clingy winter pounds, but it probably is due a lot to the weather. ...And now that it's March, spring is just around the corner and it will be so much easier to be active and enjoy the outdoors. AND there will be delicious fresh fruits and veggies to eat and we all won't be craving warm, fatty comfort foods so much. Okay, maybe I'm deluding myself! Here it doesn't feel much like spring (high of 17 today...at least it's sunny). I did go snowboarding, though, so at least I'll enjoy the winter if it insists on hanging around. OH, and Karey, both of the dresses are really pretty, but I LOVE #2 with the flowers. I actually *really* like the cut and the flowers are so fun, and the jewelry you paired with it is great. Plain black is probably more classic, formal, and versatile, but I think the flowered one is great and looks awesome on you! And I think it would be very appropriate for a wedding and a cruise (though I have never been on a cruise, yet) ...Actually, this makes me want to start looking for a dress for my cruise...but that isn't until August, so I should probably wait or I will end up buying, like, 6! I love an excuse to buy a cute dress!! Well, I had better get back to studying. I have a terrible feeling about the exam on Saturday, and I need all the practice I can get! Hope you all are doing well. |

Wow, this post is so depressing. I hate being preachy, and I know I am, and I know everyone hates me for it, but reading about someone who is reverting to eating meat is so sad. It just makes me feel like our society will never make any progress. On the plus side (for you, anyway, can't say there is any plus side for all the animals or the environment), I have never had any digestive problems due to any of my relapses or errors in judgement. Even after stuffing my face with a plate of hot wings after over a year of being vegan. If you do feel sick, maybe it's guilt, or your body reminding you of how wrong your actions are. Just a thought. |

Well, I'm not exactly an expert, but here's my 2 cents: 1500-1700 is pretty low, I wouldn't reduce that any more, and if you want to start running again, I would probably even up the calories a little. Running is fun, but if you have stopped for a while, take it easy getting back into it. I am a newb runner myself, so I am not the best source of info, but here is an article from coolrunnings about upping mileage: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_1/107.s html Good luck |

Well, the actual gym that I pay dues to is about 35 minutes away. Then there is a crappy smelly coop gym in town, about 3 minutes away, but the machines are often broken. And then there is home, with my workout videos! I usually go to the real gym about 3 days a week, but this winter, I've been working out more at home to avoid the slick roads. |

Yeah, I'd say about double what you calculated. Each of those plates might have had 2000 cals just by themselves. Best just to forget about it and start again tomorrow. This is the problem with counting. It takes the fun out of food. I never eat anything I don't know the calories of anymore. |

re: covering ankle tattoos-- I am about to encounter this big time with the one on top of my foot. I have about a billion job interviews during the week after next. EEEP. Typically, I wear a pant suit with boots. This is totally normal in the winter. You could probably get away with a skirt suit and classy boots in the winter at a less formal place. Here is my secret tip, though (also only works in winter or when it would be normal to wear nylons): Wear flesh colored opaque tights with off-black nylons OVER! You can see a tiny hint of tatto still, but you really kind of have to be looking for it. They do make spray on tattoo cover, but I can't see how that wouldn't either look weird or rub off. I'm hoping once I get a job, I can come up with a better solution! Maybe they won't mind tattoos? (Unfortunately, I'm going to be a lawyer, a rather more buttoned-up profession) |

I have several tattoos, including one covering the top of my right foot. I hope to get another on the outside of my left foot this summer. As far as what you get and where, that is so totally personal. I agree that you should pick something you know you'll love forever, but for some people that might be flash off the wall, so I won't judge. Tips, though...I do have a few. Most important: BABY THAT TATTOO!! While it is healing, nothing is more important than making sure you take care of the tattoo. An f'd up tattoo costs a lot to fix or is there for life. What does this mean? It means think before you act. Consider the time of year. If you want to get a foot tattoo, don't get it at a time when you have to wear shoes (or big snow boots). After getting mine, I wore only slippers for maybe a week or 2 (keep in mind your foot will swell AND you don't want stuff rubbing on it). Similarly, don't get it at a time when you won't be able to take care of it properly, like right before a camping trip when you won't be able to keep it clean, or before some performance where you would have to wear a costume that would rub on it. For at least 2 weeks after getting a tattoo, it should be the first thing you think of. That means you might have to make some sacrifices. Considering this website, I will warn you that tattoos should not get very sweaty while they are healing. That means if you are going to get it in a place where you sweat, you should take it easy working out. Trust me, it's more important that the tattoo heals right than it is to keep working out for two weeks. You can always make up a workout, but you can't un-screw-up a tattoo. Other tips: Go to a good artist. Don't pick one out of the phone book. Get references from people with awesome tattoos, talk to the artist, get a feeling for their style, accept that you might have to make an appointment far in the future, and accept that it is going to cost big bucks. Then, when they tell you how to take care of the tattoo, do exactly what they say. Last bit of "advice:" It doesn't really hurt that badly. |

Sue, Thanks for the food ideas. I actually have a can of black beans that has been lurking in the back of the cupboard for a while. Maybe I can whip them into something delicious. I wonder if the coop has cilantro this time of year...? Sorry to hear about your tribulations, too! Between the renovations, your cell phone (which, I must admit, is also kind of funny) and the frost threatening your poor tomatoes, it sounds like you're having a heck of a time! Things are not nearly as exciting here. I just finished my first day of bar review for the weekend, and I'm thinking of taking the evening off to go see a movie with friends. However, it's hard to convince myself to go out when it's cold and icy (and WINDY) like today. Hope everyone's having a good weekend! |

I think the secret ingredient is making it look effortless. I am so jealous of those girls that can throw on any old thing and put their hair up with a pencil and still look runway-ready. And the kicker is that they don't even notice or care how gorgeous they are. It kills me because I have to try so hard :( I have two good friends that have natural model good looks and seem almost like they try to appear awkward and dress sort of weird and shabby. And still, prettiest girls ever. And you can't hate them because they are so sweet and oblivious. I CAN still be jealous. Though it doesn't help me much. |

I agree with Dawn. The ONLY way to fail is to give up. If you keep at it, you will start to loose again. Dawn suggested great "tricks" to try...another I have found was that recently when I was feeling gross and in a rut, I found that what I needed was to space my eating differently. It actually helped me to strictly time my eating into 3 meals and 3 snacks instead of grazing all day. You have come a long way. Be proud and know that you can stick with it! |

HAAAAA haaaaaaaa... I guess I have been on CC so long I have started to get loopy and when people ask very sincere questions that sound to the veteran calorie counter like a joke...well, it makes me laugh. There are no exercises to make you lose weight in your hips and thighs. I am really sorry to break that news to you. I have gone from being overweight to being ridiculously thin, but I still have very disproportionately large hips and thighs, plus delightful fat bulges on my knees and award-winning cankles. You just have to get used to it. My body likes to keep the fat on the lower half. Who am I to question my body's judgment? So the short, less snarky answer is to aim for whole-body fat loss with a variety of cardio workouts as well as interval training and weight lifting, if that's your sort of thing. I personally like to do just cardio maybe 2-3 days a week and do cardio + core or cardio + strength on the other days. |

Just to clarify, you can't get legal advice over calorie count. I would be suspicious of anything they you receive that purports to be legal advice, because it is probably not legitimate. Lawyers could be subject to professional discipline for giving you advice in this forum. It sounds like you are going to do what you want anyway, but if you really want legal advice, find a local lawyer and just a have quick chat with him/her. That's the only way you could get an opinion you can count on. (PS, I am in my last year of law school and my ethics exam for the bar is a week from today!! Hence my paranoia about ethical issues. ...And personally, I can't blame doctors for not wanting to open themselves up to malpractice lawsuits. That's scary stuff!) (PPS, nothing I have said should be construed as legal advice ;) *disclaim*disclaim*disclaim!!!*) |

I have no idea how you are still able to stand, let alone run, doing all that exercise on 1600 calories. I'm not going to tell you what you should be eating, but I can tell you that I am a lot less active (meaning I work out an hour or less a day) and I have had pretty good luck maintaining on about 2000 on days I DON'T work out, 2200-2500 on days I do. You are pushing your body, you need to give it support through nutrition. While training for a marathon, I would worry a lot less about every little pound and calorie and more about making sure my body isn't being damaged. Maybe you should go to a running/marathon training website for advice, not a weight loss site. Best of luck, though. I hope some day to train for a marathon, too. |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
