Wednesday Weigh-in!

SW-270

LW=255

CW-248

This weeks drop isn't the greatest news simply because it's not healthy. I haven't been able to eat over the last two days so that is playing a big role in it. I'm going to try really hard to at least reach my goal calories so I don't kill my metabolism..

Thank you guys.. I know it seems silly to turn to strangers on the internet but I feel so isolated and alone and this has become sort of a safe haven for me this past month. I'm not sure how I'm going to do it, but eventually I have to be okay, if not for me than for my kids. I just don't know how I'm going to do it right now...

Thank you guys!

Weight Loss Alli, have you tried it. Did anything bad happen. Apr 26 2008

A friend of mine took it for a while and she didn't seem to have any problems with it. She's always had constipation issues, and she said she was never more "regular" than she was when she was taking Alli.. She stopped taking it because of the cost.

Alli works by blocking the absorption of some of the fats in foods. If you eat a low-fat diet, I don't see the point in using Alli. Also, when you do eat a high-fat food with it, it can cause some not-so comfortable tummy issues.

I've thought about trying it.. but opted to just change my diet instead.

smathless- I didn't really count calories but my guess is that the lower fat diets were lower calories simply because fat has more calories than do carbs. Counting calories is kind of new for me this time around.. and seems to be working well! :) I eat low fat because I can eat more with fewer calories.. and in general seems to be the healthiest way to eat.

It's hard to know if it's your thyroid, diet, calorie intake, etc. without any of your stats. Are you already at a healthy weight and just trying to go from a size 8 to a size 6 or are you needing to lose a significant amount of weight?

Thyroid issues can certainly affect weight loss.. making sure that is under control should help.. if your hormones are normal than the answer may lie in your calories intake/output.

Editing to add- That I've been hypo for years and years and have had the most success with lower fat diets than low carb diets. In fact, I tried the no carb thing once and after 1 month I had gained 9lbs! Lowered fat and calories seems to work best for me.  Good luck!

Smoking! I smoked 2 packs a day for years and years and on November 29th, 2001 I quit and haven't had a smoke since!

I remember sometime before quitting sitting in bed smoking that "last" cigarette of the day thinking, "This is my life, I'm a smoker and will probably die a smoker". It was a terrible realization and even worse feeling. As hard as it was to quit, it was all so worth it when after about 3 months I had a new realization when I was sitting in the doctors office and the nurse asked the typical "Are you a smoker" question and I could honestly say "no"! I was a non-smoker... I joined the ranks of non-smoker! I was an incredible feeling and I wouldn't trade my non-smoker status for anything.

All of that is symptomatic of hypothyroid- unfortunately the meds do take time to really start working.. it will happen though, I promise!

It sounds like we have a lot in common.. I have two kids (mine are boys) ages 4 and 2. That alone is exhausting enough so adding hormone imbalances to the mix doesn't help much! It'll get better!

irishmum- It takes a while for the meds to really start working.. and your dosage may still be too low. Your doctor should be monitoring your levels to make sure you're on the right amount.

I've been hypo for over 20 years (diagnosed at 14 or 15) and through the years my meds have had to be adjusted pretty regularly. The worse was a few months after my second son was born.  I was in a brain fog and on the days my hubby was home I'd sometimes sleep 16 hours! My hormone level was 58! No joke.. and what was worse is I had to insist the doctor check my numbers because she wasn't convinced my problem was my thyroid! Anyway.. it took 3 adjustments to get my meds where they needed to be and took quite a while to pull me out of the fog, so to speak. You will start to feel better once your hormones are where they need to be!

Faieriesunshine- Over the years I've done the exact same thing.. I'll get tired of taking pills all the time or I'll be too lazy to get a refill and just stop taking my meds.. I'm trying really hard NOT to do that anymore because the last time I did it (a few years ago) I developed nodules on my thyroid gland which was kind of scary.

Being hypo definitely presents some extra challenges with weight loss but I've been successful losing weight many times in the past so it's definitely NOT impossible. Good luck!

Hi everyone! It looks like everyone is doing great! How was everyone this weekend? We went to Olive Garden tonight but I think I did okay.. I got grilled chicken primavera and only ate a little of the pasta and only a half of bread stick. I also saved calories all weekend so it wouldn't be too bad so all and all I think I did okay! We'll see Wednesday!

Weight Loss If you could offer ONE piece of advice you've learned the hard way to someone, what would it be? Apr 20 2008

Well, it IS wasting food...and the food you wasted could be used to feed one starving kid in Africa. Just pointing out that it's not a good habit to be wasting resources that could have been allocated elsewhere.

Than the issue is learning to prepare meals with just enough food to eat what we need. This is especially tricky considering sometimes kids will eat everything put in front of them and others they'll eat two bites and be finished.  I have to agree that even though it can be wasteful not to eat everything on your plate.. to teach good eating habits later in life, it may be necessary. And perhaps by teaching kids to stop when they are full.. they will waste less as adults because they will already be wired  to make less in the first place.

BLASPHEMY! The Miniseries was brilliant! And they actually, you know, followed the plot!

lol- You have to admit it was still pretty cheesy! I love the books though.. the world lost someone special when Douglas Adams died.

Movies are never as good as the books..

I must say it wasn't nearly as cheesy as the British TV series that was done.. lol

Don't let a bad day, week or even month cause you to throw in the towel! Try to give up the "All or Nothing" approach!

This is the mistake I've made time and again! I'll do good for years, lose the weight and keep it off and then I'll just crash! I'll have had enough and I'll eat whatever I want whenever I want. At that point I just lose all ability to keep going as if by having a bad day or week destroyed all those years of hard work, when looking back it was only a few lbs of weight gained. At that point I give up and allow ALL the weight and then some to come back on.

So this time if I have a bad day I'm not going to let it defeat me in my mind. I'm going lose it and make sure that even if I fall off the wagon.. 20lbs is easier to lose than 120lbs!

You're a very pretty girl- that said, being extremely underweight is as dangerous as being extremely overweight. Honey, you are underweight to the extreme which unfortunately, is what I think the reaction you were hoping to hear was. I'm no expert in ED- but if you don't already have one I think you're well on your way.

Good morning! Sas- That is amazing! I wish I could report such a loss but alas my scale hasn't budged in almost two weeks! :(

CW- 258

GW- 150

I wonder if it's evening out the "trend" since I started this (a little less than a month ago) and showed a 10lb loss in the first week. Even though my scale seems stuck, it's still a 12 lb loss in less than a month. Of maybe I'm not being as good as I thought I was being with my calories.. I must be underestimating!

There is definitely a psychological aspect. I mean, when it's pounded in your head to finish every thing on that plate before you can get up from the table (or your mom forcing 2nds and 3rds because you need "meat on your bones")  how can it not be part of your thought process as an adult? It is SO difficult for me not to finish everything in front of me. I've often wondered if I need to see someone just to rewire my brain when it comes to meals!
