take into account bone-structure as well. I have a very broad rib cage and it makes my waist a little bigger even though I have very little fat in that area...I'd hate to know what my ratio is, no hips and broad rib cage make for a straight line... :(

I think as long as your keeping it positive and showing her a balanced way to eat it's fine. I learned my healthy eating habits from my mom and I'm very thankful to her for it. She was never negative about food though, just always encouraged good habits and healthy foods, and being balanced :)

Health & Support Glomming on to certain foods/food phases Jun 10 2008

I go through phases where I can't get enough of certain foods. I still eat other foods though, and try to have a balanced diet. right now it's avocados..I usually have half an avocado everyday and i'd have more if they weren't so calorie dense.

have you tried using whatever the current food is as an incentive to eat other foods? like if you eat a balanced meal, then you can have (insert food here) as a treat? or incorporate the food into a balanced meal, for instance I'll have avocado w/cous cous, chicken, pine nuts and sliced tomatoes.

So I'm 19 and I can see mine coming in on the bottom, but they seem to have been in the same place for a while, like at least a few months I would say...do you guys think this is normal? They seem to be coming in okay as far as I can tell.

mine came in slowly in a period of over a year. I got them out when they started causing my pain, because they were pushing on my other teeth due to my small mouth (the bottom ones actually came in sideways because of this!)

so if they start hurting you I'd see your dentist.

edit: forgot to mention I was 22 when I got mine.

maybe easy to find in the uk but in dallas.. not so much. :(

I love naan bread. I've never seen it in a market around here either. But it is pretty simple to make, much easier and less time consuming than most breads. There are plenty of recipes online and even how to videos on youtube, or just google it :) It's one of those foods best fresh anyways.

In response to the OP. I love bread! rye bread is probably my favorite (though I've found it's not such a good flavor combo w/peanut butter...) I eat around 2-4 slices a day. toast, sandwiches, w/soup. But like anything moderation is the key :)

I wouldn't worry too much about one donut now and then. If you ate say a dozen at once or a donut was your breakfast every morning that might not be so healthy. But if your eating a balanced diet overall. A 'treat' now and then isn't going to hurt you :)

I have to jump on board here...

There is some very, very good advice / information available through the people on this site. There is also a lot of information that is very biased. It's all a part of being within an extremely diverse cyber-community (spanning Europe, NA, and even Asia). You need to be a discerning individual here, just as you do everywhere, these days. No one has the exact answer that is specific to YOU. All they can do is share what has worked for them. It's up to you -- as an adult -- to investigate what rings true to you by researching some posts and discarding that which is not applicable to your situation. This is, after all, a site that is aimed at adults and we should anticipate that these adults have the common sense to realise that we are in cyber space and the information flung around here is for the most part highly subjective.

I mean, this whole weight loss /fitness thing really IS subjective. What works for one person will only have the exact same result if every inch of data (and some common DNA) such as food, sleep, stress, schedule and time spent working out is applied to another. We can't expect that. We can only say, as a general rule, that this or that has this or that effect on the human body. And even that can be, and is, argued by the experts extensively.

Who CARES if it takes one person an hour to do get to the same place as another for whom it took half the time? Who can say with absolute certainty that the methods used for the one who did it faster would actually WORK for the person who took a longer period of time to accomplish their goals?

I totally have to agree! What is 'best' (to use the word I keep seeing) for one person is not necessarily 'best' for the next person. Each person has to find what is 'best' for them and take into consideration many more factors than what may just work the fastest.

It seems like people often have the attitude that only there way is best.

At the risk of being criticized I have to disagree that lifting is the only way to get a toned fit body. And if you don't your body will be smaller and flabbier.

Personally I don't lift at all (aside from as some one, I forget who, pointed out, daily activities like grocery shopping). I don't have anything against it, I'm sure it has health benefits and works well for some people. And I'm not afraid of getting bulky or anything like that. I just don't enjoy it and would rather spend my time exercising biking, walking, hiking, or playing sports. most of which is mainly I believe considered cardio exercise. But my body isn't flabby, or even small. It's toned, and strong. This is what works for me, it may or may not work for someone else.

I guess my point is everyone's a little different and what works for each person is a little different. There's nothing wrong w/offering advice when it's asked for, but there's a positive and negative way to do it. And I have to agree w/bigmommah that unfortunately the latter way seems fairly common.

Recipes What are some good ways to add flavor to oatmeal without the calories? Jun 09 2008
21:27 (UTC)

I like a tablespoon of flax seed and fresh fruit (apple, strawberry, banana, peaches, plums, raspberries,  mango, etc.)too.

nutmeg or allspice or both! would also be good. or vanilla or almond flavoring.

this is an interesting recipe I found that sounds good :) I didn't calculate the calories but I can't imagine that it would add many on top of the oatmeal since it's mostly spices. and a whole mango is about 135 cal. but that's a lot of mango!

Chai Spiced Oatmeal with Mango

oatmeal

1/2 tsp vanilla

dash of salt

dash of cinnamon

dash of ginger

1/2 dash of cloves

1/2 dash cardamom

sprinkle of black pepper

1/3- 1/2 mango, in small chunks

Measure oatmeal into a microwave safe bowl and add appropriate amount of water. Add salt and spices.

Microwave according to oatmeal instructions.

Top with mango chunks and stir. Let stand for a minute or two; mango will become tender and juicy.

Sprinkle with a bit of sugar and top with milk, if desired.

I haven't done the calculations, but gi-jane is usually pretty great about calculating those things so I'd go w/what she said. also keep in mind as long as your not getting enough sleep your bodies probably burning more calories than it normally would...just cause you burn more awake than asleep!

I don't know if you have this problem but I found that when I was working nights I got the munchies a lot more. baby carrots and other raw veggies are great to take a long to help ward off those vending machine temptations. (After re-reading your original post, it dawned on me that you worked in a hotel, like you said duh! Which is what I did when working nights too!)

And I forgot to mention in my last post about caffeine. I don't know if you have coffee or pop or something like that to help you stay awake on your shift but this can really mess w/trying to sleep too. I would try to avoid it, and if I did have it I would only have it in the first few hours of my shift (I do love coffee!). I used to walk the hotel a lot to keep me awake (we were supposed to 2 times a night but I usually did more like 10 times ;), or if I was desperate I'd go in the pool room and do jumping jacks(for those really bad nights).

The Lounge Christians.....I have a Question? Jun 09 2008

Original Post by moonikins:

The idea of a good sending his son down to earth to die for sins could be construed to show how loving this god is. After all he is giving his son as a sacrifice. I see it as proof that this god is not all that loving. First he creates creatures (people) who are imperfect and can't follow the rules. Then he sends his son to die an agonizing death so that these people can then be forgiven. Why do they need forgiveness for being and doing what they were created to do and be?

But Adam and Eve were created perfect. They had the ability to follow the rules. There was only one rule, which was to not to eat from one tree in a garden full of trees. They broke that rule, and Satan who tempted Eve (Genesis chapter 3 if you want to look this up) essentially called God a liar, stating that He was holding back something good from them. By doing that Satan and Adam and Eve essentially challenged whether God had the right to rule over his creation, and implied that they would be better off ruling over themselves. So God has given humankind that opportunity to prove that humans can rule themselves. (Satan's challenge and this issue is restated in the first few chapters of the Job). But he left the way open for those that choose to, to return to him through his son's sacrifice, which his son did voluntarily.

as someone who used to work 11pm-7am I'll try and give you a few tips.

I would have a small meal when I got off work nothing big. and egg and some toast or something simple. Then I would go to bed at 8 am and sleep till 3pm. here's a few things that would help me sleep.

check out your environment, is there sunlight, even a little would make it hard for me to sleep so I would block out the windows in my room w/pillows. also noises, like other people in the house would bother me, this is hard to control but I found just kindly asking my family to try and do things away from the house at certain times was helpful and they were understanding :) also try avoid doing anything that might stimulate you when trying to sleep like watch t.v. or read. I found these affected me strongly when I was working nights, even though they never bothered me when working during the day and sleeping nights.

I didn't do this personally because I found it hard to get up. but I have friends that worked a similar shift and would stay awake after work till 2 or 3pm then  got up at  10pm for work. They were more tired when they tried to sleep that way (cause they'd been awake longer) and so found it easier to sleep for a longer period of time.

One more thing I found was having a regular schedule (working the same days each week) and going to bed at the same time every day. really made a difference for me. This can be hard to control depending on your boss, but I found that explaining to my boss that I couldn't get enough sleep when she changed my schedule every week, and therefore was having trouble performing my duties at work as a result, really helped.

The Lounge Christians.....I have a Question? Jun 09 2008

putting aside whether you believe in God or the Bible or not. I think it only fair that when examining Christianity that you look at what the Bible has to say about what Christians should be. Kind of like a textbook for Christians. The same as is you were examining some other religion...say the Muslim faith you would look at the Koran.

That being said I would like to point out that a lot of doctrines of 'Christian' religions upon close examination don't actually agree w/what the Bible actually says, they have no real scriptural support, and are often more the opinions of man and will vary from one Christian to another. So I don't really think it's fair to judge Christianity on any one of the religions spurned from it. I do think it's fair to examine the Bible it self and make your own decision on belief based on that.

ladyfirelyght- as far as what you said about works, I would like to point out that what that pastor said does not agree w/the Bible. The Apostle James wrote that 'faith w/out works is dead'. So yes good works are important but according to the Bible they alone also aren't a source of salvation. Since the main point of Christianity is belief in Jesus and what he taught and recognizing that his ransom sacrifice means forgiveness of sins for those who are repentant(which means not only feeling sorry for the action but then trying to change it/stop doing it). But the idea of doing good works is repeated throughout the Greek scriptures and the accounts of Jesus certainly set an example of this.

As far as attending a religion out of fear not I don't agree w/that either. In fact I don't believe in hell as fiery place of torment either. If you look at the word that hell was translated from in the Bible, Sheol in the Hebrew scriptures and when it was translated to Greek Hades, these words refer to the common grave of humankind. And the Bible speaks of men which God had expressed approval for going to hell, such as King David, Job and others.  Jesus said that the two most important 'laws' were to love God and love your neighbor, respectively. So motivation for practicing Christianity should stem from unselfish love not from fear.

Sorry this got kind of long. But my point is do your own research and don't just believe what any one person or religion says.

I've been listening to the french open on their radio station. not quite the same as watching the matches, but better than nothing. Federer's done his usual at the french, the semi w/Monfils should be good. I'm quite excited about the Nadal-Djokovic semi, as  I see it as the only chance of Nadal getting knocked out of the running and seriously how great would a Djokovic-Federer final be!

I agree w/you about Djokovic knocking Federer off his pedestal. If he can avoid injury I think he can do it, he's more consistent on surfaces other than clay, and lets face it that's where Federer needs to be challenged. For some reason Nadal just can't seem to overcome Federer on a surface other than clay on a consistent basis, if he could then Nadal would have a shot at it too.

my only concern would be all that fiber and how it may affect your digestion, but if it's working for you then don't worry about it. As as far as losing that's all about the calories. if you concerned about the sugar. some fruits have less than others.

Weight Loss losing weight in the summer or in the winter? Jun 04 2008
23:04 (UTC)

probably depends on the person, but for me definitely the summer. For many reasons, I'm much more active, all the active things I love to do are outdoor summer activites, hiking, horseback riding, biking, tennis, swimming, etc. I realize some of those you can do indoors but somehow it's just not the same and I either don't have access or room to do them indoors. Also people grill more in the summer, a healthier way of preparing food and a lot more fresh produce is more readily available. And in the winter the cold makes me crave all those comfort foods!

I don't know about the band. But I know someone who has had gastric by-pass surgery and has successfully kept the weight off for nearly a decade. It was however a last resort for her, she was at the point where her life was in jeopardy. Afterwards she was very strict w/portion control and walked for exercise regularly. My mom also had a friend that died from complications from the surgery. So it is dangerous and personally I feel these sorts of surgeries should only be a last resort, when someones life is already in danger from their weight.

and dalmalama congrats on all the weight lost and best wishes for the continuing journey :)
