laallisonra, I love to drink...wine. I went four weeks and that's including four weekends not drinking. I ate strictly chicken fish and vegetables fruit and kept it under 800 cal. a day (yeah whatever) . I lost 20 lbs. and for the last 3 weeks I've upped my cal intake (f00d wise to around 1000) and allowed myself to indulge in a few glasses of wine here and there. So, now i'm losing around 1-2 lbs a week which is totally great with me. I'm glad i got the bulk of the weight off, but lemme tell you quitting drinking is not easy. The pattern I fell into which led to major weight gain was drinking too much, binging the next day....depression...repeat. Probably, the best thing to do would be for me to quit booze altogether, but clearly that's not going to happen. Going on vacation next week and going to be moderate in every respect, but definately going to eat more when i get back and work out. Why is booze so hard to avoid? I can easily polish off a bottle of wine to myself and I like it as long as I don't 'feel" it the next day. |

I've lost 23.2 lbs and want to lose another 15. It's weird cuz i tend to put on the baggy clothes/pants instead of the smaller more appropriate sizes I own. I think psychologically, I like the feel of the baggy clothes because it makes me feel thinner. I put on a size down pants and felt like a fat pig but at the same time I know it's a great achievement to be able to fit into that smaller size. Weird mind games huh? I'm really trying to move past that. I know from personal experience it is deadly to wear stretchy/baggy clothes. So my advice to you is to go out and buy/or alter your clothes to your new size. |

Google Vitamin A. Vitamin A from Beta-carotene is harmless and excess is excreted in the urine. I think you're consuming this mostly by the sounds of it. |

There's really no way to tell how many calories you upchucked or absorbed, so yeah, you should just write yesterday off. It may or may not affect your weight loss. Just get back on track today....drink LOTS of water because you're probably dehydrated (I'm assuming it was alcohol you drank). So did you binge? Did you vomit on purpose? |

I eat radishes to fill me up and curb my appetite when I'm having a rough time of it. It's sort of like what someone else mentioned about eating an onion to kill your appetite, but a heck of a lot more pleasant. I find the spicy/biting taste and aftertaste makes me not want to eat anything else. Just watch out for rancid radish burps! |

Just wondering....what's everyone's drink of choice? Wine...usually white for me. I like red just tends to give me a headache. I know a calorie is a calorie, but do you think some types of booze affect your weight more than others? I personally have found wine gets me craving the starchy, refined carbs in a bad way. |

Water weight usually comes off in the first week and that's why you usually see a bigger drop during that time. Unless you're dehydrated, the number going down is you losing fat. You'd have some serious problems if the almost 20 lbs you lost was primarily water. Congrats :) |

Okay, just to explain the lying thing further. I do not like doing it. In fact, I become quite resentful and bitter that I feel I have to do it, but....different people require different tactics...And how is this for pathetic...I've dropped 17 pounds and haven't seen anyone yet. I plan on downplaying my weight loss ...saying it's only 12 so I don't have to listen to all the comments and criticisms. "Oh, you're losing to fast....Just stop now...you look fine! etc" Maybe it's time to re-evaluate who are my true friends. As for the blood sugar thing, mine was actually above the normal range and thankfully since I got my act together it has gone down to normal. So, in fact it's not really lying and who knows....maybe if you had your's tested before you started to get healthy, it was reading a bit high too. It is a valid concern afterall!..As for alcohol I tell people (if pressured) that I'm abstaining because it's really affecting my depression. Again, it's the truth, but for some reason using the weight loss thing just isn't a good enough. Annoying, but obviously very common. |

You could lie and tell them your doctor told you your blood sugar is slightly up and you are deathly afraid of becoming type 2 diabetic so you're going to lay off the sugar for awhile. For some reason our 'friends' can give us grief if they know we're trying to lose weight. Myself, I have used health concerns (not weight concerns) to shut people up. They seem to be okay with that 'excuse'. It's a pain and why should we have to lie, but I figure if it gets them off my back with minimal explanation then so be it. But really I just want to scream at them to shut up and mind their own business. One friend of mine recently was commenting on every single thing i put in my mouth like, "is that all the dip you're going to take???????" and "aren't you going to have (insert fatty food food here) and to top it off handing me appetizers. Since when is she ever interested in how much I eat (let alone handing me food)? She's not unless she notices me dieting and I think it draws attention to her own weight problem and that she's not doing anything about it. Anyway, regardless of your friends' reason for ''eat-my-cake-its-my-birthday'' guilt trip, remember that their birthday isn't going to be any more special if you eat the cake or not and if you have the nerve tell that to their faces! |

Clamato has clam juice in it. Now, that might sound disgusting, but I assure you it does not taste it! I'm not even sure that is why it tastes so much different/better than plain tomato juice. I like mine with a tsp. of horseradish mixed in. It comes bottled plain or spicy. Anyway, no can taste clams! Wow jennielee, pickle juice eh? Jack up that sodium why dontchya :0 I'll have to try it... |

Well here's the fallout from drinking a bottle of red on virtually an empty stomach. I feel poisoned from head to toe. I guess it's because I've been without booze for a month. Woke up with a pounding headache, upset stomach and have only managed to eat a bowl of oatmeal and chicken breast. Guess I won't be doing that again ...well at least not until I up my calories. I'm usually not such a lightweight, but today I am suffering and have learned that I'm not really missing out on much by not drinking. Well got that outta my system! It was a pricey buzz :) |

I revisited alcohol tonight and I sorta kinda but not really feel bad about it. I've been on a low cal diet for a month and lost 15 lbs and just decided to indulge. It was an educated decision, but at the same time I feel kind of weak. I'm trying to get past that. I drank a bottle of red wine (3 -8 oz. glasses over a 4 hour stretch) and I'll probably feel like crap tomorrow even though I only feel just a bit tipsy now. My body has been without alcohol for 4 weeks and the sugar content is probably going to wreak havok on me more so then the alcohol. Yes, I do the low cal thing and please no negative comments. I know how you all feel. I've done this before and it's never screwed up my metabolism. I gain weight because I totally stray away from semi-healthy eating and start beating myself up with food. I go out of my way to abuse myself with food and booze because I don't feel good about myself. That being said, I am okay with the wine tonight, but realize it can't be a regular thing. It messes up my body and mind. Some wine on the weekend is fine....on a regular basis NO. I felt like drinking because....the vegetables that I love....16 0z. raw weight a day (and I eat a great variety) is pissing me off. Tired of it. However, I feel like a million bux but at the same time I am wrestling with my method of doing it. I'm just such an extreme person...black or white...that this way of dieting works for me. I can easily maintain my weight until something stressful happens...in the last 4 years (only time I've struggled with my weight seriously) was when my mom died of a brain tumour (horrible 2 years) and my dad hooked up with another woman right away who is totally wrong for him. Sorry, just had to vent. I think I drank at least 64 oz. of water along with the wine tonight. So just to let you know...I'm NOT promoting drinking or low cal diets or anything else for that matter. I'm not going to starve myself tomorrow....just move on.... |

Hmmm let's see....constantly stuffing my face with starchy, processed foods, not moving unless I HAVE to, eating horizontally, drinking too much wine every night and gorging myself on Chinese food every weekend (I'm highly reactive to sodium). That oughta do it! =40 lbs gained over 2 years...oh yeah and I'm an emotional eater and have had lots to be emotional over in the last couple of years. Currently reading self-help books to deal with that issue as well as body image problems. I want to get to the source of the "problem" and find other ways of coping! |

I appreciate all of your posts. Didn't expect it really. Thought I was pretty "different". I rarely see the typified "fat slob"...ugh. People I see in public that are overweight are generally well-groomed (of course I'm looking for this!) and friends and aquaintances are as well. The don't stop showering, leaving the house, they go on vacations where they have to wear a bathing suit, the buy new clothes regardless if they've gone up a size, they don't avoid social situations and stepping outside the house. This IS NORMAL. Of course the people I know aren't pleased that they have gained, are overweight and can't fit into their skinny jeans etc, but that doesn't stop them from living! My point is that it does me. Finding drive thru banks to use the atm so I don't have to get out of my car in my pj's and greasy hair (hell any kind of drive thru works for me!), not wanting to see people that you haven't in a while because you know they will be 'sizing' you up (paranoid or justifed? I think a bit of both). So what's the difference between us and them? I hesitate to blame my mom (she passed away two years ago and I've never been the same since...hello 30 pounds!)but she did spend a lot of time in front of the mirror criticizing her fatness. I remember being little and seeing her try on tons of clothes before going to a party and throwing them on the bed saying while crying, "I can't go...I'm too fat ....nothing to wear." My dad was always looking helpless trying to reassure her. For the record, mom usually had an extra 40-50 pounds on her and went on a lot of crash diets. AND.....she was exposed to a lot of rude people at parties and otherwise that made fun of her as a child and an adult. I was a slightly chubby child and was ostracized for it. You know how mean kids can be. So is this all learned behaviour? My mom was generally very neat and clean, but on her binge days I would come home from school and she would be in her housecoat (albeit showered and house tidy) with either a stack of cookies on the arm of the sofa and/or a jar of may0/horseradish dipping raw hotdogs in (ugh disgusting despesarate binge food!). Wow that felt good to vent! Sad to hear that other people are in this kind of pain, but also glad I'm not alone. |

Way to go tomcat! You know, if you can break free from the whole fast food thing for at least a month and then (if you dare to) try it again, you'll probably find it pretty gross and NOT satisfying at all. Once you're off the roll, you'll be loving those salads and leans foods. The very smell of fast food will make you feel ill. Keep it up! |

Sounds like a plan torpidire! It really is self-destructive and unproductive. "We" KNOW that, but it's another thing to DO something about it. I've already started sprucing myself in increments since I decided to get myself out of this horrible funk 3 weeks ago. I wear mascara at least everyday (I'm naturally fair so my eyes look bald without) and I make sure my limited clothes supply are at least freshly washed and pressed (along with myself!..well not the pressed part lol) Think I'll go out next week and buy a couple of new tops since i'm down 10 now. It seems to have a snowball effect for the good when you do these little things...just like it can do the opposite when you neglect yourself. And now....for one other thing very embarrassing and probably not often mentioned....do anyone have issues with gaining weight in their crotch area? Ugh, it really can become a pudgy distorted thing...I think my last 10 lbs i gained went directly there! How do you tell your husband..."well I'd like to have sex, but my crotch is too fat." I think he'd have me certified. Actually maybe sex works off the fat in that area!? LOL Well, I'm going to perdy myself up now! Floss, brush, facial mask! Yeah! |

If a box of crackers for example, says so many calories per 8 crackers, then take out 8 and put them in a ziplock bag so you won't be tempted to eat tons straight out of the box. |

Yes, I know it's depression, but I also believe I neglect myself to justify not having sex with my husband since July 07. It's a shield. It's like, "hey don't touch me....I'm fat, dirty, ugly and not worthy....how could you possibly be attracted to me????" He's very supportive by the way......I just really don't want him to see me naked...hell, i don't want to see myself naked! |

| Weight Loss | Excess Skin From Weight Loss | Mar 28 2008 17:47 (UTC) |

A certain amount will 'bounce' back, but it could take up to 18 months. This is what a cosmetic surgeon told me. I have redundant skin on my lower stomach along with stretch marks that I got from my dramatic weight gain/pregnancy 18 years ago. When I'm heavier the pouch fills out and looks better texture-wise, but I don't like the size of me then. A lot of it has to do with the elasticity of your skin which varies from person to person. I know a woman who had triplets and didn't have one stretchmark or loose skin after....flat as a pancake belly. It's genetic. |

My Daily Average Intake on Dr. B: Carbs: 75 g Protein: 69 g Fat: 9 g Sodium: 727 mg Sugar: 33 g Cholesterol: 178 mg Saturated Fat: 1 g Fibre: 20 g Who cares really if in fact the 8-10 is water? It's still unnecessary weight. I've lost 10.8 in 22 day and lost 1.75 inches off my waist and 2.74 inches of my hips. I'm certainly not dehydrated drinking 64 + oz. per day of water. My face and fingers are no longer swollen, my skin and eyes are clearer, my clothes are looser, my sleep is better (I no longer nap during the day) and my IBS and reflux symptoms are gone. Excess water needs to come off regardless so if it's all H20 well then so be it. Ketosis strips are testing mildy positive for fat burning. No one says that you have to eat this way forever...it's short-term, but what you do eat is quality. I've never eaten so many high-fibre and dark leafy vegetables, fresh fruit and lean meats in my life and feeling excellent for it. |

| Weight Loss | Scale Fear!! | Mar 28 2008 01:53 (UTC) |

I'm very fearful of the scale. I've tried everything from weighing myself everyday, to once a week to never. What ends up happening is everyday freaks me out because of the fluctuations even though rationally I know why they happen. Once a week is a good plan, but eventually I'll miss my weigh-in day because I assume that I've gained and can't face the number (even though I have been 'good' all week). This leads to putting off getting weighed for months and then panicking that I've put on tons which makes me eat more and more. Then a year later, I face the scale and I always think it's going to be worse than it really is. This last time I assumed I was at least 20 lbs heavier than I actually was. Can you say DISTORTED? It's this panic that causes me to stress eat. I can remember be borderlline underweight once and not wanting to go out cuz I was up 2 lbs. How do you get over this? |

You are told up front about how much it will cost. You don't have to pre-pay for anything. So I guess the diet was beyond their means in the first place or they didn't budget for it. As for being fatter afterwards, that has nothing to do with the diet. There is no weird metabolic bounce back, where you eat one slice of pizza and start packing it on. As a matter of, most people still continue to lose during the maintenace phase until the proper amount of nutritionally balanced food is introduced. It's different for everyone obviously. Putting weight back on after any kind of weight reduction program is usually caused by the person reverting back to old, bad habits and that is the individual's CHOICE. The purpose of this program is to get the weight off quickly, which for some people is the right thing to do especially if health problems are involved. Even though the calorie intake is low, carbs and proteins are on par and fat being low. This is not a no carb/high protein/high fat diet. At least you are able to eat lots of fresh vegetables, fruit and only lean meats instead of a steady diet of pre-packaged, high-sodium, chemically treated insta-meals supplied by some places. What can you "learn" from that? I believe most intelligent people know how they should eat, but CHOOSE not to do so. It's definately deficient in dairy and fats, so the option is there to take essential fatty acids and calcium as well. It's too bad to hear that the people you know had a bad experience, but how many people do you know that lose weight no matter quickly or slowly are successful in keeping it all or most off permanently? Not the majority that's for sure. That's why these diets, life-style changes books, and New Years resolutions exist in the first place. Sad but true, but not impossible. My stragedy is too catch the impending backslide before I fall off the mountain completely because the yo-yo thing is bad in any case. |

Just in case anyone is interested here is the scoop with the Dr. B diet. After an initial group consultation, you weigh in 3 times a week and get a B-Vitamin injection ,give them a morning pee sample for them to test for ketosis and hand in your food sheet for inspection. They record your measurements on the first visit and take blood work. You see their doctor at the clinic every two weeks for a chat and get results from bloodwork if it was done. They ask you to take a multi-vitamin and they prescribe you potassium to take with breakfast and lunch. Food choices are rather limited, but are healthful. The clinic sells instant soups, oatmeal, puddings, bars etc. but you are NOT required to buy them. In fact, I don't as I'd rather eat 'real' food. Here's an example of a typical day: Breakfast: 1/4 Cantaloupe Mid-Morning: Kavli Flatbread LUNCH: 3 1/2 oz. chicken, 8 oz. spinach, tomato, beansprout, mushroom salad with 1 tbs. Kraft Calorie-Wise Balsamic Vinaigrette SNACK: Melba Toast Rect. & Apple DINNER: 3 1/2 white fish with 4 oz. mushrooms & onions, 4 oz. steamed brocolli 1 cup. diet jello (optional). It's really on the low calorie side, but I don't feel deprived, hungry or ill. It's meant to be a short term diet. On maintanance, they increase portions and food choices. I don't full out exercise while I'm doing this as it's too low in calories. ...I start that during maintanance. Mrstomdelong, I've lost 9.4 in 20 days. I feel great considering how depressed, lethargic I was before. I had poor digestion, was drinking too much wine (oh yeah and there's NO ALCOHOL on this diet! which really can do a body good) my sugars were highish on the first blood tests and now they're back down. It is expensive, but I'm saving a ton of money not buying wine or going out for dinners/ordering in. It's given me the kick in the butt I needed to get motivated. I lost 30 lbs on it a few years ago and maintained easily enough until major emotional trauma 'made' me slide, but that's another story... |
