| I've been there, I know it can be done. I started out at 260 lbs and lost 80 pounds in 4 months. The first month alone, I believe I lost 25-30 pounds. When your bigger, your body can burn alway those pounds like nothing. I could tell the more pounds I dropped, the harder it became to loose the same amount of weight each week. I pushed myself just like the people on the show do. My parents would look at me and wonder if I was going to kill myself from all the sweat and hard breathing I was doing. Some days I wonder, how will you ever know what your limits are if you don't push them? | |||
| Weight Loss | if my body is in starvation mode, how do I know and what do I do? | Sep 28 2006 21:30 (UTC) |
|
| Take your total number of calories you set yourself to eat each day and divide that by the number of meals you are going to eat them in. To raise your metabolism and keep it going, I suggest 5 small meals or snacks. If you are aiming for 1500 calories a day, then each small meal would be 300 calories which is a perfect amount of food if you think about it. That will keep your body going all day long. | |||
| Fitness | How long should it take to run a mile?? | Sep 21 2006 21:58 (UTC) |

| Good advise given so far.. If your looking for comparisons, When I run at the gym on a treadmil, I can do 9 min miles for a distance of 4 miles. My best time for running 1 mile is 5:08. It takes patience and persistance. In today's world, we all want fast results or we get discouraged. | |||
| Fitness | Thought I was going to die.... | Sep 21 2006 21:46 (UTC) |
|
| When it's below 35F outside, I wear a stocking cap and gloves. I've run in temps as low as 15F, and never had an issue with my body being cold. As far as your lungs, it will take you awhile to get used to the cold air that is rushing into your body. It usually takes me a week or so to get used to the colder temps and then I'm fine. | |||

| Speaking from expierience, yes, larger people can loose the weight quickly the first couple of weeks. When I was 260 pounds and started eating right and being more active, I would see 10 pound weight loss weeks. Keep in mind, I was easily putting down 4000 calories a day, more on other days. Hell, I would have 6 Mt. Dews in 1 day, that's 1000 calories without any food! The weigh in last night was true. | |||
| The Lounge | Resting Heart Rate - Inexplicably Low | Sep 15 2006 22:38 (UTC) |

| That doesn't seem low at all. I donate plasma twice a week, and my heart rate is typically between 55-65 bpm. My blood pressure seems low some times, but the more in shape you are, the lower your rate will be. My blood pressure is normally 115/60 for a comparison. | |||

| Hey mfchill,
What town are you located by? I've got a cottage in Florence County, about 25 miles south west of Iron Mountain. I live in Kaukauna, during the week. |

| Fitness | Fasting runs | Sep 14 2006 17:16 (UTC) |

| That is exactly what I do in the morning when I get up to exercise, not because I'm "fasting" but because I'm already getting up at 5:30 in the morning. I can't see how I could eat an hour before. If I had a good supper or snack from the night before, I can run as long as I want. | |||
| Weight Loss | I miss bread and other carb-filled things. | Aug 25 2006 21:37 (UTC) |

| You need to be very careful with deleting everything you enjoy eating. You will find yourself giving in eventually, and binging on those things. Letting yourself eat small portions of the foods you enjoy is healthy. MODERATION is key. | |||
| Weight Loss | Beer & Liquor? | Aug 25 2006 14:30 (UTC) |

| I still enjoy my Jack Daniels and diet cokes. I was on a kick of Vodka and Diet Mtn Dew for awhile. Last weekend it was Budlight, only reason I drank Budlight was because the Packers were playing. A bar I go to has a special during the games, everytime the Packers score a touch down, you get a free drink! They won, 38-10, so I had my fair share. :-) | |||

| Thanks for all the advice! The more I think about it, I will approach her directly, and not ask her friends. I know from experience that going behind "backs" is not a good idea. My intentions are "A", and by the time they get back to the individual, cause we know friends are going to let other freinds know, the intention is now "Z". | |||
| Motivation | Biggest binge? | Aug 11 2006 19:52 (UTC) |

| Binge days,
Last year before I started watching what I was eating, I would easily put down, and this is no joke, 4-5,000 calories a day! I would have at least 6 Mt Dews per day, Burger King, McDonalds, whatever fast food joint looked good. I didn't nor do I now, consider this as binges though. That would be my normal routine for the week. |

| Weight Loss | Ran 40 min OMG I cant belive it | Aug 03 2006 16:29 (UTC) |
17 |
| Don't try to push more then 40 minutes for a few days now, let your body catch up to itself. Depending on how often you run, I would say 1-2 times per week, give yourself a little push by a couple of minutes.
Congratulations! |

| Weight Loss | Hangover Eating | Jul 26 2006 17:11 (UTC) |

| When I know I will be drinking my fair share, just before I lay down for the night, or early morning :-), I slam 2-3 glasses of water. This usually keeps me from getting any hang over. I myself drink Jack Daniels and diet, so that may have something to do with it. I lost the taste for beer. | |||
| Fitness | Working out in hot weather | Jul 19 2006 20:44 (UTC) |

| You should try running when the temperature is 85 outside, BUT, the humidity is near 90% I was running my usual 4 miles the other day and I could feel the difference. I could still keep my usual pace, but my breathing was definatly deeper than usual. I can usually carry a conversation while running, but I would have had a hard time. | |||

| I started my diet last year on June 23, 2005 and weighed 258 pounds. Started a diet of 1000-1200 calories a day during the summer months and worked out on the Nordic track about 3-4 times a week. September of 2005 I started running and do to this day. I am currently 175 pounds, 5'8". 83 pounds down. My goal, when I started was 200 pounds. I've been lowering that number as I've lost the weight. I would like to weight right around 165. | |||
| Weight Loss | McDonalds or Burger King | Jul 18 2006 21:13 (UTC) |
12 |
| I used to eat lunch at Burger King or McDonald's every M-F. I would get the double whopper or double quarter pounder, super sized, with a Mountain Dew. Then two times a week, I would stop at Dairy Queen and order a blizzard, largest size possible. I can honestly say that I have no temptation to eat at a fast food joint anymore. I find that once you get over the cravings, fast food almost seems sick to my stomach just thinking about it. I do know from looking at the charts, that a cheese burger and small fry are not that bad for you when you look at other choices. | |||
| Weight Loss | too many calories!! | Jul 07 2006 20:05 (UTC) |

| There is nothing better then a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on wheat bread! Last year when I started my diet, that is what I would have for lunch every day, along with a small zip loc bag of pretzels. | |||
| Motivation | So you think you had a bad weekend?!! | Jun 13 2006 19:16 (UTC) |

| alibuch, I also consumed a "fair" share of alcohol over this past weekend. My drink is diet coke and JD. I also had smores and a HUGE steak dinner over the weekend. I even finished off someone else in our groups food they had on their plate. I was ready for a big weight gain, but I actually lost weight, just like you. I think the alcohol I consumed flushed my system out. | |||
| Weight Loss | Starvation Mode | Jun 01 2006 17:16 (UTC) |
43 |
| Although I advise against this kind of activity, last summer I was committed to eating no more than 1000 calories per day. I was overweight by 80 pounds or so, thinking that my body would burn it's fat quicker by not eating as much. Now that I have lost the weight, I find it very hard to eat a normal amount of food again. I try to eat right around 1600 calories or so a day, but usually go way over that. I starved my body so long, that now anytime I eat some food, my body just wants more. It's a very bad cycle to get yourself into, so I would start eating more calories. | |||
| Foods | How much sodium is considered right to consume in a day? | Mar 08 2006 16:13 (UTC) |
5 |
| You must have a very limited diet to only ingest 850 mg a day! I would think your body needs a minimal amount of sodium just like any other mineral. | |||
| Weight Loss | Starvation Mode? | Mar 03 2006 15:00 (UTC) |

| I'm starting to wonder about this starvation mode also. Last year, I went on a 800-1000 calorie diet for most of the summer/fall months, and exercised. I never felt better. When I reached my goal weight, I started to eat more during the day, almost going upto 2200 calories a day, and now I don't have the energy I used to. If you are overweight, and by that I mean I was 80-90 pounds overweight, I don't think it does any harm to cut your carlories down to 1000 per day.

| Motivation | I need to get off this yo-yo | Mar 03 2006 14:55 (UTC) |

| The yo-yo ride is getting on my nerves also. I started at 258 lbs last June, and weighed in at 165 Thanksgiving Day. Since then, I have slacked on going to the gym, and gained 15 pounds. I'm not going back to where I was, so I need to get myself motivated and stay in that routine.
I'm sure you notice the same thing I do, every time you get on the yo-yo, your energy level and mood swings seem to coincide with each other. Every pound I've gained since Thanksgiving, seems to take my motivation down 1 level at a time. |

| You didn't say how tall you are, maybe 160 pounds was "your ideal" weight, not what the charts say. It sounds like you may be trying a little to hard. Two hours of cardio every day sounds like over kill to me. Even if you are taking Sunday off. What type of cardio are you doing for an hour in the morning and then another hour in the evening?

| Motivation | Lost Weight, Now What | Mar 01 2006 22:06 (UTC) |
|
| The more I think about it, the better this marathon idea is becoming. I enjoy hunting, fishing, snowmobiling...etc and just realized how easily these activities are now. Walking to my tree stand 2 seasons ago I would sweat up a storm and tire myself out after a full day of hunting. This past season, I would barely break a sweat, and I could hunt from sun up to sun down without ever feeling tired. Now I need to enjoy my "new" self!
Thanks Everyone! |

| Wow! Thanks for all the encouragement. Actually, I have a friend that is training for a marathon, she wants me to train with her. I wouldn't mind training for the marathon, but you really have to stick to your training. I've never had any "goal" to run a marathon, but maybe that is what I need to get myself back on track. | |||
