Vegetarian Vegetarian teen, need protein? May 09 2008

Egg whites are great, less then 5 cal/gram of protein.

Egg whites are what I use to top off my daily protein needs, without them many days I would be short 15-20 grams of protein.

Vegetarian Refried Beans Apr 30 2008
22:00 (UTC)

I love refried beans, but the canned ones have a huge amount of salt in them, almost 5 grams of salt for one can. I have made my own using black beans and they have come out pretty good, still working on perfecting them. They are good as the base for a dip or things like burritos, they are not bad as a source of fiber.

I make a potato salad that is pretty low in calories. I use cream cheese and sour cream in place of the mayonnaise and only use the whites of eggs. I put in a bit of curry powder to spice it up. The last batch I made had around 1.1 cal/gram.

I don't know about the nutrients but some fish just tastes better raw.

Here in Hawaii raw fish is a pretty normal dish, and very tasty.

Vegetarian protein sources and how to fix them? Apr 25 2008

I keep very close track of my protein each day, if I am running low I will make a dish with egg whites in it to get me up to the level I want to be at. I will often do a very simple dish, rice egg whites, just a bit of cheese and a bit of onion, it comes out sort of like a risotto.

I also make potato salad with egg whites, it is very easy to adjust the amount of protein in the dish with egg whites.

If seafood did not count then dolphins would be vegetarians, which of course they are not.

I eat some seafood, but don’t count myself as a vegetarian.

Kidney cancer is very treatable if caught early enough, I had a kidney removed last year from kidney cancer and so far it looks like I am now cancer free. The main thing is don’t freak out too much.

If you don’t have cancer then the main thing to keep your kidneys healthy is keep your weight down, keep you blood pressure under control and keep your diabetes under control.

You probable should also have your creatinine level checked as well as protein in your urine, both will help tell if your kidneys are working well.

30 to 45 grams of fiber is not all that much.

I try hard not to go below 30 grams of fiber and would be happy with 45.

Yes, that's right. By the way, if you type it into Calorie Count, you'll see that they mostly list ".... rice, cooked" etc. and that matches with the info you have.

186 grams is nothing. If you know your kilograms, then you know that it takes 1000 grams to equal 1 kilogram. 1 kilogram is 2.2 pounds. This is about 0.4 pounds. One cup of uncooked rice is so much heavier, at LEAST around 2 pounds. And right now I am guessing, because I never weighed my rice before. But I've had to carry bags of uncooked rice, and those things are heavy!

Calorie-count shows one cup of uncooked rice weighting 185 grams, which seems about right to me.

Know how much protein you are getting a day.

The normal lower limit is given as 0.8 grams a day per Kg of body mass, but some feel you can go as low as 0.6 grams per Kg of body mass, I would stick with 0.8 grams a day if I were you.

Make sure you are getting enough of the essential amino acids, it seems Lysine is the main one most people worry about if you are not eating meat.

Beans are very good, I like to use dry ones, never from a can, it is cheaper and I don’t need all the salt that is in the canned ones. Beans take some planning ahead but are easy to cook, I really like black beans myself.

I find it hard to get enough protein with zero meat, I will tweak the amount of protein I get in a day with just a bit of meat, it does not take much at all.

I use rice milk from time to time when I am cooking. I also sometimes use coconut milk, high in saturated fat but it sure tastes good.

I eat around 550 calories for breakfast, I don't feel at all bad about this, in part because I walk 3.5 to 4 miles in the morning before breakfast, which burns up about 400 calories.

I find that if I don’t eat enough for breakfast I snack on high calorie foods before lunch.

Oh, and I am eating 2300 calories/day and lossing weight at the rate I want to.

Vegetarian Meat in moderation? Mar 29 2008

You eat 70g of meat and get only 15g of protein? The only other nutrient in meat is fat so you're getting 55g of fat per day. You said that 15g of protein (60 calories) is 20-30% of your protein calories in a day which means you consume 200 to 300 calories from protein per day. Your 55g of fat would be 495 calories on its own.

Sorry, Scott, something just doesn't add up here.  Your diet is either very odd and extremely high in saturated fats or you got your math and/or estimations wrong.

The fact is that 20-30% of your calories coming from animal protein is a problem and will lead to ill health later in life no matter what amount of total calories you consume.  You may want to take a more realistic view of what you're actually eating instead of guessing at it.

The meat I eat is mostly water, as is most meat, look it up.

I never said that 20-30% of my calories are coming from animal protein, what I said was 20-30% of my protein was coming from animal protein.  I eat 50-60 grams or protein a day, which is much lower then the norm.

70 grams of meat is about 2.5 oz, that is not much meat at all.

I am in much the same position, I eat far less meat then most people, normally 70-90 grams/day.

I keep my meat intake low for heath reasons but see no reason to drop it to zero, moderation is a good thing, IMO.

Only eating 70-90 grams of meat a day means most of my meals are meatless, which is why I check out this forum from time to time.

I figure that about 4% of my calories come from meat, but 20% to 30% of my protein comes from meat.

I eat virtually no milk, or milk products or eggs, so the only animal protein I get is from meat.

The world seems to mostly divided into people who eat no meat and people who eat a fair bit of meat, it seems like there are no that many of us who eat very little animal protein but that do eat some.

Scott

The average American consumes 70g of animal protein per day.  Sorry, you're not eating far less meat than most people, you're eating the same or more meat than most people (in the US at least).  The world is divided into the developed nations where people's diets consist of large amounts of meat and underdeveloped nations where people's diets consists mainly of plant-based foods.  The people in developed nations tend to die of things like heart disease, cancer, and autoimmune diseases, the people in underdeveloped nations tend to die of diseases of poverty like communicable diseases and diseases relating to poor sanitary conditions.  Consuming 20-30% of your protein in the form of animal protein means you are putting yourself at extreme risk for those diseases of affluence which kill 2/3rds of people in the developed world.

Hmm, I am eating 70g of meat, not animal protein, I don't get 70g of protein in a day.  I get around 15g of animal protein a day.

20-30% protein from animal protien might be a problem if I were eatting 200 grams of protein a day, but I normally am getting 50 to 60 grams a day.

Vegetarian Why is vegetarianism so much more expensive? Mar 27 2008
22:01 (UTC)

I have dropped to meat consumption to very low numbers, about 3 oz/day, from this I have seen my food cost drop by a huge amount. I also buy very little processed food cooking most things from scratch, this is mostly to keep my sodium intake to a somewhat reasonable level, but it also helps to keep food cost low.

I would guess my average food cost to be something like $3.00-$5.00/day. And it is fruit that makes up a lot of that cost. I use a lot of rice, beans and onions, all of which are very cheap. For beans I used dried beans, never canned, the canned ones have more salt and less flavor and cost way more, what sense does that make.
