Fitness Body Fat Percentage Questions Jun 25 2009

I just read up on this yesterday and they said the most accurate way is the hydrostatic water tank, which is also the most expensive and hardest to come by.

I read the home scales just measure your body fat from your waist down and using your height, weight and sex, give you an average.

I had a trainer take mine last Sept using the calipers (old looking ones at that) and he came up with 30.1% at 124 pounds and I FREAKED out. I read those calipers have an error of 4 percent, meaning my bodyfat could have been anywhere from 26-34 percent. I've lost 9 pounds since then, jumped on my scale yesterday and it read 16.4%. As much as I would love that to be true, something is not right. I do have an extremely tiny frame, but 16.4 seems really low--shouldn't I have a 6-pack than, LoL.

After reading numerous articles I came away with this: There really is no 100 percent accurate way to do it, but instead of focusing on the number and comparing it to others, you should focus on the trends of your own number.

Do they say right on the front they are "burpless?" Which ones are you taking?

I wonder how many weeks it takes before you start noticing some visible results, whether it's fat loss or shinier hair and nails.

I have a short, boxy torso too. It's the first place I gain weight, and even at my thinnest of 110 pounds, it still made me look bigger than I was.

Also, I justt looked at your pics, and you look fantastic. If I had your body, I'd walk around naked all the time and risk being arrested. Keep it up.

I do a turbo kickboxing class at a local university and I love it. It's pretty much the only way I don't phone in my cardio, especially in the winter.

It's about 55 minutes of nonstop cardio and almost to the end, you do a turbo section, which is high intensity for about 2 minutes. You do it about 3 times, or until (for me) you're a flailing, sweaty mess, LoL.

Spirochete, I know what you mean about form. They'll switch up the routines and when I'm trying to catch on, I'll look in the mirror and think, I am so not doing this right, LoL.

I get that, but it alternates between sugar and salt cravings. I think it might have something to do with what you all burn and sweat out during exercise.

Try a cup of chocolate milk to fill that craving. I've heard from a few docs it's the best thing to refuel with after a work out.

Ah, if only it were that easy to gain that much muscle. When I gained 10 pounds over 8 months, I liked to believe it was because I was lifting heavier. Turns out it was fat, and now I'm on a calorie deficit, dropping weight and seeing some real definition due to my heavier lifting.

Yay!

I've been told I look like Sarah Chalke (Scrubs), Renee Zellweger (especially when I put on 25 pounds in college and Bridget Jones was out, LoL) and Portia DeRossi. I can kind of see the Portia DeRossi in some old pictures, but not anymore.

oh so its already a year old then.  are they making a second seaon?

edit:  ya know, at first i thought it was a british show, but then i started wondering "why is it so sunny looking?"  english shows are always sooo gray and gloomy looking.  and i was also wondering why they had a special group for the south pacific/islander kids in and english school.   then i realized that it was australian and everything starting making more sense.  (sorry for not recognizing the accents.)

I thought it was English, too, but did recognize how warm and sunny it looked.

I watched the first episode and found it funny, but it wasn't enough to keep me watching. I hated the Jonas character.

I don't shop at Abercrombie simply because I can't stand the thumping music and cologne being pumped through the air vents (is it like that in the UK, too?)

But I remember their sizes being off. Chains will do that on ya. Banana Republic has SHRUNK. I used to be able to wear a 2 there, but it's so tiny now--and it's not due to weight gain.

The finale is live, right?  The producers don't know who will win yet, right?  Because if they really were focusing on Vicki because she's going to win and they want people to like her more, it didn't work at all.  She still disgusts me, and if she wins and her picture is all over my 24 Hour Fitness in a few months, I'm going to switch to Bally's!

Right, so there's really no way to give any contestant a winner's edit because we won't know who won until next week when they all step on the scale.

I was extremely frustrated when Vicki said she wouldn't eat vegetables and her kids won't either, and she has an overweight 4-year-old. It's annoying enough when adults have the picky disposition of a child, but when it actually affects the health of their children, they need to grow up and try some new, healthy foods.

Thanks everyone! I kicked up my weights every where because I was coasting a bit, and I definitely felt a difference. By set number 3, I could barely get past rep 8 and I could feel my heart beating in my ears.

This is a related question:

I currently lift 15 pound dumbells for most exercises and do 3 sets of 15. The last few are always tough for me to get through, but not impossible.

Should I move up to 3 sets of 12 with 20 pounders?

Thanks for any input.

FYI: Sidebends will get rid of your love handles! Go ahead, stuff yoru face, do some sidebends and then stuff yourself into your high school jeans!

I, unfortunately, learned this the hard way in college. I ate like freakin chicken alfredo everyday, worked out for a couple hours and was still astounded when I put on 20 pounds. *facepalm*

Restrictive caloric intake is really the only answer. There are very few people who will see their abs pop-out after doing 50 crunches. Most of us have to whittle down our bodyfat, and I mean whittle, just to see some definition.

Well, that is great to know! And fortunately, I only live 2 minutes from the gym, so time isn't a factor.

And good thing I love cottage cheese--even the whey floating around.

Oh, the things you learn at CC.

Thanks!

Melkor, I was wondering about cottage cheese vs a protein shake. I just finished up my soy protein powder (plan to switch to whey) but don't have time to run to the store. Tonight, I'm lifting and thought to myself, Hell, I can eat a cup of cottage cheese for 160 calories and 26 grams of protein! It's one more gram of protein and half the calories (I mix my powder with chocolate soy milk.)

Will it be as effective?

The Lounge "I'm sorry, but 120 on my frame?" Dec 02 2008

I have to agree that it's all about your frame. I'm 5'5" with an extremely tiny frame. People always marvel at my small wrists and size 3.5 ring finger. What sucks though is I look best at 110 pounds, which according to BMI (don't pay much attention to that anyhow) claims I'm underweight.

I'm about 119 right now and want to lose another 5 pounds before my wedding in the spring (slow and steady wins the race) and there is a drastic difference in how I look now as oppose to how I looked 5 pounds ago.

I envy people who can put on 10 pounds and no one is the wiser.

Well, first things first, it's 2008, not 1952, so let's get this, "You're not a real woman unless you're making your husband dinner and cooking and cleaning" BS out of the way, ok? I rarely cook because I don't have the time. I work 9 hours a day and spend 2 hours at the gym. I'm not slaving over a hot stove for the two of us. Many times, since he has a flexible schedule, he *gasp!* does the cooking. And he's a much better cook than I am. Whoever doesn't cook, does the dishes so no one is just sitting there, being waited on.

ANYWAY!

My fiance eats all the time. ALL THE TIME. I don't. I've learned to just simply say no when he offers me something. However, I have a much harder time backing down when he wants to grab some fast food or get dinner somewhere,  but I'm getting better.

My suggestion is to surround yourself with healthy alternatives.

My fiance, for instance, wanted a slice of cheesecake while we were at the grocery store. Ooh, that sounded good. BUT instead, I picked up some sugar free pudding cups. He got his 400-calorie dessert and I enjoyed my 60-calorie treat.

Fitness Muscle Water Weight? Nov 21 2008

This is in conjunction to her question:

If your muscles are sore from working out, they're retaining a lot of water, right?

Well, if it takes a week, like you said, even if your muscles are no longer sore, could they still be retaining water a day or two later?

Oh yeah, I'd be way happier with losing 2 percent body fat than two pounds. So many factors go into what your weight is (water retention, food, lack of bowel movements) but fat is fat!

Congrats to you for melting some of it off.

Try it again.

I am officially out of the 120's!

WOO!

I weighed 119.5 this morning, and what makes it even better, is I'm pretty sure I actually weigh less than that because I'm premenstrual and retaining water. I stepped onto the scale and said to myself, Don't be discouraged--you know you're retaining water so just take the number with a grain of salt.

So I was pleasantly surprised to still see the numbers going down.

Fitness Walking at night Nov 06 2008

I've been confronted with this issue too. On days I don't lift and do heavy cardio, I love to take my dog for a walk around the lake and on the trails. Well, two problems: 1) It's dark. 2) I just moved to a new neighborhood that I'm not used to yet.

My dog loves to walk and get exercised, so I can't deny her that, so I'll take these tips. Plus, my dog does look pretty intimidating if you don't know her, so I like to think she helps protect me.

I used to eat Panchero's a lot. I'd get a chicken burrito with queso, sour cream and avacado. Those things have at least 1000 calories in them!

Oh, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I'd eat like 3 bowls for dinner and call it good.

I haven't had either in two months now, since i started my diet, and I don't miss them!

Fitness Difference Between Soy Protein and Whey Protein Nov 04 2008

Original Post by littleshellys:

I would go with Whey. In my opinion and other will differ soy is not good for women. There have been some studies done that link soy to certain types of cancer in women. Other studies have been done that say soy prevents some types of cancers. I lean on the side of caution. Any thing that effects or changes hormone levels in my body I avoid.

I think that may be near impossible these days, unless you eat only organic. As for the soy studies, there are so much speculative research that sways one way or another. It seems that more often than not, data are inconclusive. Who knows.
