| yeah they're fun but hard. I thought maybe doing it on a team might be easier than solo but I didn't take into account that with a team you are going hard the whole lap. | |||

I run a 32x17 normally, that allows me to climb all the hills and not spin out too much on the flats on my local trails here in Northern Virginia / Maryland. I can add anything from 16 tooth up to a 20 tooth depending on where I'm riding or what kind of race I'm doing. |

| Woo Hoo New Bike Custom, Pimp Daddy, Cranks 21 Pounds. My new endurance bike, singlespeed and rigid. Less stuff to break at 3 am :) Random Thoughts. I love the "morph" series of pumps. Best mini-pumps out there. Mine saved my butt in a race once. If you want to get a lighter road bike, try looking at the older Kleins on Ebay. The Qunatum series builds up to a light bike. Mine comes in at 19 pounds. Yeah, clipless pedals. You're going to fall so plan your rides in safe areas :) Nice once you get used to them. |

Dan Just read your post. Nice job on the long ride, I guess we both logged some miles. Yeah, I pretty much know every rock, bump and root by its first name on that trail :) |

| As promised a few pages back a quick report of my 24 hr mountain bike race.
21 laps 11th place out of 47 solo riders 136 miles 17 hours of riding time Did it on my fully rigid single speed. For those not familiar with this type of racing. You basically see how many laps you can you do in 24 hours on a mountain bike trail. The loop is 6.5 miles give or take. There are several team categories but I do these solo. Here is a quick link to a full write up plus some pictures. This messageboard doesn't lend itself to super long posts. Ride Log Don't know how many calories I burned, a lot. Here's the calorie-count twist. 2 years ago, I weighed 275 pounds. :) |

I tell you I'm loving the single speed mountain bike. I may never go back to the gears again. I get such a boost of extra satisfaction when you make climbs the gear guys are struggling on. I took all the suspension off of it a few weeks ago too. I devolving. |

| Best way I've found to build endurace is to do long road rides. As long as you can. Riding a heavier bike might build more leg muscle which i guess is always good. Might give you better cardio which is really good. If you are thinking about racing make sure you setup your race bike and training bike the same.
edit - thought of some more stuff Another great way to build strength is to ride a fixed gear road or single speed mountain bike. I've been doing this for about 3 months now and it really pumps your legs up. In fact, I'm thinking my singlespeed will be the only bike I ride from now on. Even racing. Just find a gear ratio you like. |

| There is some stuff called chamios butter that you apply to the pad in bike shorts that helps. There are lots of brands but I like the one called Butt Butter or something like that. There is also some stuff made by Brave Solider that works pretty well. I'm going to try some new stuff this weekend called Monkey Butt that is a powder vs. a creme. Yeah they all have stupid names like that but they work. Look at a brand called Specialized or WTB. They seemed to be a popular brand for saddles. I use a Specialized and really like it. My problem was blood flow and this one keeps things flowing nicely. |

| Thanks,
Next race is on Memorial Day weekend. 24 Hours on the singlespeed! Can't wait, I hope to ride for 20 hours total and/or 175 miles. I can post a little write up. Usually takes a couple of days before I can move again so don't expect anything too soon :) |

| Hi,
Kevin here. Really into biking. I live in Woodbridge Va just outside of DC. I have serveral bikes. Klein Quantum Roadbike Lemond Poprad Cyclocross bike Independent Fabrication Steel Deluxe Moutain Bike Independent Fabrication Steel Deluxe Singlespeed MTB (on order actually) Klein Attitude Mountain Bike converted single speed. I'm really into racing mountain bikes. Endurance racing - 12, 18, 24hrs solo or 100 mile races. I love cyclocross racing too. My latest thing is fully rigid Singlespeeds. I love them. I'm doing my next 24 race on my Klein SS. I also just commuted to work for the first time this morning and really liked. Living so close to DC made it tough but I was able to piece toghter a route that wasn't too bad. My goal this year is to train and do well in all my races. |

| Great post. I would add a small repair kit with things like a small tool with multiple bits (often called a multi-tool) tube, maybe a patch kit and a small pump. Learn how to do basic maintenance too.

| I use these two products made by Hammer Nuturion.
Hammer Soy and Hammer Whey their website is www.e-caps.com I use the soy in the morning or on days I'm working out and the whey after workouts and/or when I'm recovering. The website goes into why and which one is best. I make a smoothie with a either one of the protein powders and all kinds of berries, a banana and some light OJ. Great stuff. They have around a 100 calories a scoope give or take. No flavor additives or anything like that. |

| Don't think I'm going to make the challenge. I've been killing myself every Sunday racing so I'm not able to get in long road rides during the week, need to save my legs. I'm done racing for a few weeks so maybe I can step it up. | |||

| Yeah, your head can really mess with you. For me, I had to get my mine in the right place in order too loose weight. I think that's why I failed all those other times I tried to drop some pounds. Once my attitude was right, loosing weight became easier (still one of the hardest things I've ever done however)
I can totally relate to people that have eating disorders now. Your head really can mess with you. |

| other than you're going to love being lighter on the climbs. I sort of fell off the wagon and gained about 15 lbs. I've pretty much dropped it all now and I feel like I can fly up the hills.
Being stuck at a weight sucks. Sounds like you're doing everything to bust out of it. Seems to make sense that sprints will shake you out of it. Look at doing some core work too if you aren't already. My lower back use to really hurt, I changed the setup on my bike a bit and started doing some crunches etc. I just got two new pieces of equipment for my bike that I think are going to work out nice. My left hand is tingling and my feet were really hurting after doing that long endurance race last weekend. I just picked up a set of Ergon grips. Seem like they are going to work. They take the pressure off that nerve in the meaty part of your hand. www.ergon-bike.com For my feet I moved my cleats back and bought a set of these heat moldable inserts. They seem like they are going to work. You put them in the oven for about 4 minutes and then slip them into your shoes and stand in the for about 2 minutes. www2.yoursole.com I have a short four hour race on Sunday. While I don't like make major changes before an event I think these will pay off. |

| "your a** must be sore!! LOL, dud that is awesome!"
Not as bad as you'd think :). The worst thing was the tips of my pinky and ring finger on the left hand going numb and my feet of all things. I think I need to tweak my cleat and get some new inserts. |

| Well I'm up to 376 miles for April. Got a nice boost on Saturday with a 115 mile mountain bike ride at the 13 hour race I did. I surprised myself with a 5th place finish out of 31. I did 15 laps on a 7.5 mile course. The thing I was most happy about was my ride time. I rode for 12 hours and 40 minutes out of the 13 hours. :)

| I think you need to keep counting calories even after you meet your goal and probably weigh yourself on a regular basis. I stopped doing both of these for about 8 months and was shocked to see my weight starting to creep up. I'm back to a lower calorie intake to re-loose the weight. | |||

| Weight Loss | Has anyone here lost 150 or more lbs? | Apr 17 2007 20:00 (UTC) |
|
| I've lost about 105 pounds. I had what I thought was a lot of loose skin but it turned out to be more fat. If you pinch your skin and it feels thick it might be fat. I've lost a few more pounds and it seems like the "loose" skin is getting better. I need to loose about 10 more pounds I think to get down to my ideal weight. My BMI just went under 25. I hope that most of it goes away. I'm 34 so maybe my skin is still elastic enough to recover. | |||

| The 24 Hr is the called 24 Hours of Burn. The sponsor is the this Energy Drink called Burn.
There are a couple of those long distance races back this way too. The Shenandoah 100 and the Wilderness 101. They have about 14K of climbing once your done. I've heard of that E 100, I've always wanted to head out that way. If you're racing expert than you should be able to do these races. You have the fitness you just need to figure out your eating plan and make sure your bike is set up for it. I screwed up both of these aspects during my first race. I didn't eat enough and used this weight weenie saddle that dug into me after about 2 hours. I was done after only 7 hours. Setting the right pace is also key when you do these solo. You don't have to be fast, just consistent. That's the nice thing about these races. |

| "Hey kclark you guys that ride those endurance races are a different breed. Will you be doing your race with the single speed ? How far off do you start to taper before your race ? or do you?"
Todd, no doing it on my steel Indy Fab. I set it up for endurance racing with a nice mix of strong yet light parts. The steel takes the edge off too. The SS is too harsh a ride. I start tapering about 1.5 weeks out. Basically now. I'm just doing some light rides to keep my legs fresh. It will take me about 2 - 2.5 weeks to recover from this race then I have a short "four" hour than the big 24 hour race down in North Carolina. I got 15th last year, I hope to move up to top 10 in the solo category. Kevin |

| I'm up to 112 miles for April. I've been doing a bunch of Single Speed and mountain biking. Got 13 hour race coming up I'm getting ready for. I might get the road bike out and do some slow, easy spins to keep my legs fresh. My mileage probably won't be going up to much but it should spike after at the event. I'll probably get at least 70 miles in. Todd - Nice work on the race. Glad to see another mountain bike racer on the forums. |

| I have a few bikes.
My endurace race bike is a Steel Independent Fabrication Deluxe. They are a small frame builder in Massachutes that build high end Ti and steel bike frames. I love it, it is best bike I've ever owned. My road bike is a Klein Quantum and I have a Klein Attitude singlespeed mountain bike that I goof around on. I have Lemond Propad that I just do cyclocross races on. I have it geard real high (or is it low) anyway it doesn't have many gears which makes it hard to take out on real hilly stuff but it is a rocket on typical east coast cross courses. I looking at getting a fixed gear road bike for around town stuff and to play around on. I live just south of DC in Woodbridge Virginia. |
