you would need to post your stats to make sure you were eating enough. As for problems associated with quick weight loss it depends if you have done this by dropping your cals too low. I lost a lot of weight on 1200 cals a day but regained a good chunk of it because I had messed up my metabolism :( which is why I'm now on CC trying to put it right!! |

| Weight Loss | 1200 calories -- Questions | May 26 2008 11:53 (UTC) |

I'm with leiela on this one. I joined a well respected slimming organisation that set me 1200 cals a day though I was doing cardio for 30-40 mins 3x a week plus an active job. I was well under the 250 lbs mark you mentioned and I got down to my goal weight but felt awful. I was cold, lethargic, "cranky and hungry" to quote leiela and believe I had not done my metabolism much good! I couldn't keep to that weight and put on about 14lbs (when I joined CC). However, that's only my experience. Others could say something entirely different. EDITED TO ADD: CC has set me 1600 cals and I have loads more energy, feeling much fitter and though the weight loss is slower the inches are coming off more quickly and I know that this time it is a lifestyle I can maintain easily cos I'm neither hungry nor cranky now. |

Kishmish: its not the best website but I'm a bit rushed today and it was the first one that seemed reasonably accurate and that is: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-premenopause. htm I think you call it perimenopause in US. My GP has said she wants to consider hormone therapy but I am going to try alternative remedies first. Buhri113: "inches coming off but pounds staying the same". Its a pain in the rear because I think I've become conditioned to seeing the weighing scales as being the measure of progress! Anyway on a general note - sorry I haven't posted for a while (a week) - I battle with depression and I tend to stop posting when that happens. Speak to you soon.

Yep - I'm confused about activity level too. I work from home (home educating my daughter) but workout: Monday: 40mins cardio, 20 mins ab toning exercises Tuesday: 40 mins weight training Wednesday 60 mins cardio Thursday 40 mins weights, 20 mins ab toning Friday: 40 mins cardio Saturday: 40 mins weights, 20 mins ab toning Sunday: rest
Given your previous answer should I enter "moderate" and not enter my activities to get my calorie target? |

I guess we can all find horrendous examples of how some vegans have been rude and some meat eaters have been offensive - the problem is the stereotyping that I find sometimes on these boards. (After one bad experience - assuming all vegans bring it on themselves) Using a different example, I could give you plenty of recollections in my Uni days when I helped to set up the first Jewish society. The racist scribbles on the posters, blatant hostility in corridors when our first meeting was only a "party" with kosher food on offer LOL. However, I didn't stereotype all non Jews as anti semitic but took everyone on their merits. I guess on the web people feel its safer to just "hit and run" without the consequences and its that kind of behaviour I have problems with. |

As you know I have explained my problem in a PM and so I think it is more appropriate to speak about this privately rather than take up thread space. If you check this thread I never commented about the listing of vegan/vegetarian foods. I think your reply is for tridymite and not me at all. I was simply |

OK - it seems that I am being challenged on several counts. 1. As far as the tape measure is concerned I think it is far healthier for me than weighing myself every day. 2. A slight movement in the tape might explain 1/4" but not the 1" to 1.5" I am finding but then I don't ask you to justify whether your weight loss is water/muscle or fat do I? 3. The points that you have both made (Sue and Alylou) about "twisting, swinging, slipping, needing to use marker pens" - miss the point. I could have said the same on this thread about weighing every day and the disadvantages of doing so given daily water fluctuations. 4. What makes you feel the need to criticise my method of evaluating my progress? I have never done this on this thread - believing it was about mutual support and encouragement. Clearly I was wrong in that belief. As far as the vegan decision is concerned 1. What made you think....despite the growing number of vegetarians and the increasing evidence about the health risks (let alone anything else) attached to over-reliance on meat/dairy....."I need to continue to eat meat/dairy?" No, I won't ask the question. It is invasive and perhaps unintentionally rude. 2. What has being British got to do with anything. I have discovered two things on this CC forum generally: firstly don't have "vegan" in your screen name or refer to it - people feel they have a right to question your beliefs. Secondly, stating you are British frequently leads to unwelcome associations and unpleasant jibes. I have been looking quite critically at this forum for some time and have come to the conclusion that the only reason to continue participating, despite the trolling, flaming, judgmentalism and eating disordered behaviour was that there were some supportive people - mainly in this thread. Clearly I was wrong. |

Oh, that's ok then. No, I haven't been doing abs exercises to the detriment of everything else. The weight training has worked all the major muscle groups and abs work was just a part of it. I know there's no such thing as spot reducing. Thanks for the reply. |

Original Post by leiela: ok - now totally demoralised. I thought that by doing cardio and weight training 6x a week and by eating healthily and within my calorie target my abs exercises were going to be helping. Now I hear you say I'm just going to end up looking bulkier???? |

Hiya to everyone including new people Can't remember who started the point about cooking two meals but I do that pretty often (I'm the only vegan in the family - rest of em are vegetarians) so I make a full quiche for me (for example) and cut it into portions and freeze the rest. It took a bit of time for me to "get ahead of myself" but it was worth it in the end. Oh yea - the poll question - I weigh in weekly but am seeing more results with the tape measure these days - oh well, I guess it all counts!! See ya later. |

I'm really glad that the "weigh in" can be measurements as the scales aren't budging but the inches are (very slowly!!) I was ok with my food/calories/exercise but have felt physically lousy. Its TTOM and I'm pre menopausal (47 years old) - anyone else here like that or am I the oldest "old fart" here? |

Not a problem with the B12 - a lot of the non dairy milks are B12 enriched and some of the nutritional yeast makes are as well. I'm sure other people will add more ideas but it is probably more interesting to dig for yourself cos you always come across interesting recipes!!! |

I think that by giving me the strength to cope with things in my life - cancer, bereavement, stroke. It has been a traumatic 2 years but I know God will not give me more than I can handle. It would have been very easy to have "lost the plot" with things going on in my life but my Higher Power is still with me and looking out for me I'm glad things are looking good for you and your mother! |

I'm with dafeesh on this one. I have been "stuck" at the same weight for about 3-4 weeks now but I've lost 1" off my waist, 1" off my stomach and 1/4" off my arms and same off my legs. I know what you mean about the weighing scales - I was exactly the same last week. I thought....ok get yourself psyched up, you know the scales probably haven't budged....but look at those inches ...don't let the scales throw you. Then I weighed myself, stayed the same weight and got upset!! LOL I was grumpy that day so I can sympathise with you. It's easy to give a lecture about how you shouldn't focus on the numbers but in the end some of us are fallible human beings - so keep going mia!! |

Original Post by blackout: Yep - all the pulses (red kidney beans, lima beans, chickpeas etc), nuts/seeds (I love sunflower seeds and peanut butter!! Quinoa, tofu, non dairy yoghurts, nutritional yeast If you look through this thread you are sure to find loads more ideas. I would agree also with the idea of cooking your own things as much as possible because the pre-made fake meat etc isn't always the healthiest. Having said that I know plenty of vegans/vegetarians who do eat it so its not a "down" on them (when I first went vegetarian as a student in the 80s I relied on them myself quite a lot as I built up more confidence in the kitchen). There are a number of websites out there (not all calorie counting ones though) like www.vegweb.com (includes "recipes" for egg substitute that means you don't have to pay a fortune in the health stores for their pre-made mixes!!) also http://www.theppk.com/. I'm sure other veggies/vegans will come in on this thread and suggest others. As for the calories - I'm eating about 1600 a day and find it pretty easy! Oh... you could check out http://www.vegansociety.com/html/ and other similar links (just google vegan/vegan recipes etc) for ideas about getting B12 etc. Best thing is to just make sure you educate yourself and have fun!

I said on another forum that I was the only vegetarian in a ward of 6 women who had just had their babies and I was the only one that was not iron deficient. I guess you can be unhealthy as a vegetarian, vegan or meat eater. I don't think you have to "monitor" a vegetarian diet any more than any other! |

Hi to all plus welcome to Harleygirl!! Have I missed anyone???? (worried now in case I've missed anyone out!!) Well, I've done my 40 mins weights and 20 mins cardio. Boy did I sweat!! I weigh myself once a week on Fridays as well but my weight has been stuck for a while so I focus more on the tape measure. As for the cheaters diet - what is that? No Alison I have never tried it - I think you have me confused with someone else on this thread?? {confused} Do you mean having one day off where you eat more calories than other days and doing this every 2-3 weeks? If so, I was talking to someone on another thread about this and she recommended it as a technique to boost your metabolism. I have also checked out zig zagging. Both sound appealing.

Original Post by cantlose: Oh - poor little kitty. Poor you My daughter is a lot better - thanks to all who asked. I guess being 14 helps you bounce back fast!! She's nagging me to go kickboxing again but doc has said she shouldn't do anything for at least another couple of weeks. She's going to go nuts or drive me crazy!! Exercise is still going well - I'm really getting in to it now - first thing in the morning really sets me up for the day. I do a blend of cardio and weights 6x a week and am still not noticing it on the scales but have lost about 1" off my waist, 1" off my tum, 1/4" off "chicken wings!!!" and the same off my legs. What's planned for the weekend?? Well, listen to my son (nearly 21) tell me all about his job - trainee chef (gosh - they put fat in everything!!) Try to convince my eldest (22) to take some time off work and come and visit Also, probably cuddling on the coach with my other half |

Hi Leila, Yep - if you are into frantic sweaty kicking/punching stuff you'll love it You're right about the moves - it did take a while to learn the moves in the cardio tapes cos they're faster paced but I got there eventually. As for being vegan, well I went vegetarian about 25 years ago (no meat, no fish) but always wanted to go vegan - just didn't think I could do it. But 2 years ago I just decided it was silly to wait so I then gave up milk, cheese, eggs and honey (I do still eat fruit) and haven't really missed it at all. I'm eating things I never tried before and that is fun - I love experimenting in the kitchen and I feel great. You're from Russian hey! Wow! I'm from tiny little England!! Where is everyone else from?? |

Original Post by bunny_hop: Hi Bunny_hop - Nice to hear from you!! I posted mine just before yours arrived on my oh-so-slow PC so please don't think I was ignoring you!! Well, my workouts are: Monday CardioParty1 (40 mins - kickboxing based) Tuesday TurboSculpt (40 mins weights) and AbJam about 20 mins ab work Wednesday Punch Kick and Jam (cardio 40 mins kickboxing based again) Thursday TurboSculpt (40 mins weights) and 20 minute turbo jam cardio w/out Friday CardioParty1 (40 mins cardio) and AbJam - 20 mins Saturday TurboSculpt (40 mins weights) and 20 mins cardio Sunday rest
Usually I walk for about 2 miles on Mondays and Wednesdays as well but this is to get my daughter to kickboxing classes and she isn't going at the moment as she is unwell :( I sometimes have dessert but its usually very small - like yoghurt or fruit and I don't have chocolate cos getting the vegan stuff round here is a nightmare! (So its done me a favour - LOL) I know what you mean about being the youngest in a class - I'm the oldest in the turbo jam forum but I know there are people in their 50s doing it so its OK. Anyway - where are all you guys from?? |
