Fitness Started a part time job for fun..heavy work load, how many calories burned? Apr 08 2009
15:20 (UTC)

Thank you! Still laughing about the changing clothes thing...I had looked at bakery moderate which is 322 cal. per hour but I work next to the bakery & they don't have to walk, cook or do anything near what we do in the Deli..which is not a slam, it's just the way it's laid out. I am in good shape as far as endurance so I know I am burning some calories when I'm working plus the fact I have to walk fast to the other end of a huge store to clock in, breaks, lunch, etc. I'm not complaining AT ALL..I love it & look at it as Calories Burned & a great change up to my usual active lifestyle.  Thank you & I will change my activity thing -a -ma-jigg to bartending or heavy housework or skydiving or something.

Should I add the clothes changing like amethystgirl said? LMAO!!

A little off topic, but Leslie, I'm a allergic to Splenda too. Do you get unbearable joint pains too? I think in the US Fiber One's sweetened with aspartame, but the Canadian version uses Splenda.

I don't know about that but I get heart palpitations real bad. Scary stuff!!

Look up Splenda sickness on the Internet...spooky! I didn't find out until I was already in bad shape. I have to watch all labels!

my favorite thing to do with fiber one is to make oatmeal with vanilla soymilk, and then stir the fiber one in at the end. sadly, i gave up artificial sweeteners so i can't eat fiber one anymore :(

Does Fiber One have artificial sweetners in it? Oh my..I looked at the label! I am allergic to splenda products and I need to know if it has any of that in it? Thanks for any info cause I love fiber one bars! I have been having heart palps again lately & hope that is the reason instead of my TSH levels!

Fitness Target Heart Rate Aug 13 2008

Original Post by ledgehanger:

To clarify, the 201 calculated heart rate that Leslie mentions is a MAX heart rate.  For a good workout, you don't want to spend significant time anywhere near that max heart rate.

Actually, for a good fat burning workout, a lot of people would suggest that you should aim to be in the 60-65% of max heart rate range, which would put you in the 120-130 bpm range.  For a good cardio workout, you should be up around 80%, or 160 bpm.  If you are looking for a mix of fat loss and cardio health improvement, which it sounds like you are, interval training might be a good way to do that.  Perhaps for a 30 minute workout you could spend 8 minutes in the 60-65% range, then move the resistance up to get to the 80% range for 4 minutes, then 8 minutes at 60-65%, another 4 minutes at 80%, and then finish the workout with 6 minutes in the 60-65% range again.

TY Ledgehanger..that sounded very high to me. I know I was humming at 167 and I am almost 50. Time to turn it down a bit. Glad you cleared that up. Even for 19 years old 201 bpm is so high. Good info!

Hi!

I had the same question today when my HR was 167 while working out. I looked up the  American Heart Association website. Here is a link and I hope it works. I am going to invest in a HR monitor so I do not go overboard. I am almost 50..LOL!

150-160 sounds like you are burning some calories to me. The AHA says take 220 and subtract your age which would be 201. WOW, check that cause it sounds high to me. Hope this helps.

Weight Loss Muscle weighs more then fat? Aug 07 2008

Original Post by victoriagirl:

Well really stating that muscle weighs more than fat is not wrong - it's an incomplete statement, not an incorrect one. What people mean when they say that, I am sure, is that given equal volumes of fat and muscle, the muscle will weigh more.

I doubt that anyone besides Jessica Simpson might try to say that one pound of muscle is heavier than one pound of fat ;)

LMAO..That is a good analogy! OMG..I hope Jessica stays away from the Dallas Cowboy games this year! We need to do better!

Weight Loss Weight training + Cardio for weight loss Jul 16 2008

Original Post by amethystgirl:

Weight training will help you maintain muscle while dieting, which in turn helps you maintain your metabolism. Many people see some (small) initial muscle gains ("newbie growth") from weight lifting and also some find that they weigh more the morning after weight lifting, because of water retention, but neither of these is a good enough reason to delay starting - you'll be just as annoyed once you reach your goal and then experience these things as you would be if you start now.

And remember that the fat will come from wherever your body chooses, regardless of how you burn those calories, so there is no reason to rely on cardio for getting rid of stomach fat.  Plus, in the end, diet is going to be the most important - you won't lose weight if you don't have a calorie deficit.

As for your question about the scale, I don't know their accuracy, but I wouldn't put a lot of stock in it.

Thank you Amethystgirl for bringing up the initial weight gain. It is true although the inches lost, way the clothes fit and to see more muscles shining through is so worth it. Another benefit is skin tightening and so shiny! WOW!   I am stuck as far as the scales (screw em..LOL) right now but my body has changed a lot as well as my endurance, strength and overall well being. I do weight lifting 3 days a week along with cardio and just cardio 3 days a week. Then there is Sweet Sunday off. I started out wth resistance bands and 5 pound weights (months ago) and on June 13, I set up the free weight bench and went to work! Lots of music to keep me sweating! It is addicting.

I say...focus on weights and fill in with cardio...just my opinion. FWIW!

Weight Loss Loose Skin After Weight Loss? Jul 15 2008

Weight lifting, walking and exercising is the answer as well as slower steady weight loss. Your body will catch up. I don't know where all the loose skin goes (another dimension) but it works...but with a lot of working out!

Maybe your body is craving something in the pizza like protein (cheese) or tomatoes, carbs? What kind of pizza do you crave? It is worth checking it out...Go to the source fo your craving.

How much protein, carbs, etc. are you getting daily?

Lots of questions, huh..but worth thinking about.

Recipes Help!!! seeking Eggplant recipes! Jul 12 2008
02:18 (UTC)

We grow our eggplants and I always make what we call Rice Dressing.

Mix together 2 cups cooked brown rice with 1 cut up eggplant cooked with        ; 1 pound of cooked lean meat (we use homemade venison sausage) mixed with onions, garlic, black pepper and any other spice we can think of. Pour some broth over it (chicken or beef) Put it in the oven for about 30-45 minutes, It makes so much that we freeze what we don't eat. It is everyone's favorite dish when we take it to BBQ's, otluck dinners and gatherings and there is never any left.

BTW, it is good even without the meat. Just eggplant, spices and rice! YUM! Going to go check the garden now! I am hungry for it!

I know you must feel bad since things did not go well for now. I don't understand it either but there are other sources out there besides family members. After all....you got us! I seriously think calling someone that is not emotionally involved and is trained to help folks is probably the best avenue. Be true to yourself. Always remember that!

Congratulations! You are an inspiration. My husband can't believe how often I eat. Every 2-3 hours I am chomping on apples, oranges or something healthy. But his calories are a lot more than mine at the end of the day. He is not over weight though.  My biggest downfall is 90 calorie lowfat granola bars that I think I will quit buying. I eat 2 a day and they have too much sugar.

Thanks for sharing!

I use GNC Whey Protein. ( 1 full scoop is carbs 2 grams, protein 21 grams, sugar 2 grams) I use 1/2 cup 2% milk and 1/2 scoop with 1/2 cup whole strawberries. (158 calories) If I work out extra hard, I will make another one. I can really tell a huge difference since I upped my protein. I still eat lean chicken and fish and lots of peanut butter on my apples,  but still need a bit more on weight lifting days. I feel better and can lift more and longer.

Just stay super busy and you will eventually forget that you smoke. Replace it with health minded habits. The money you save can buy you all kind of healthy living toys and food. You will also have a lot more energy to do all the exercise you can imagine. Worked for my goofy self anyway.

Edit..BTW, how much do those nasty things cost now? They were up to $5.00 a pack when I quit.

I am a semi-reformed hippie chick. Cool Still love to listen to Stevie Nicks and wear my boots all summer long (cause of the rattlesnakes)

Anyways...What is that Pilates exercise called where you hold your legs out straight apart while on your tail and hold it? It really firms up the stomach. It was hard at first cause I would fall backwards laughing. (Good thing I don't drink anymore) I started out doing some Pilate exercises that my baby sister told me about and have a hard time remembering the names of them. Now, I am into weight lifting, but Pilates is something I want to get into more on my off days while I watch a movie. Any good DVD's out there that won't kill me? I have a history of 2 herniated discs (L3 & L4) but they don't bother me much since I have been working out and lost 59 pounds. Imagine that..LOL!

Fitness Newbie Weight Lifting Gain...When will it reverse and I start losing pounds again? Jul 04 2008

Original Post by dlcooper:

Well dang girl, you are probably water logged!  Why in the world are you drinking so much water?  Nobody needs to drink that much fluid.

Also, can ya go buy some new drawers? lololol!!!  (that panties falling off thing had me ROFL!)

But to answer your question, the newbie weight gain thing lasts sometimes about 3 weeks, then suddenly clients drop like 5 lbs.  Just about overnight.  I'm thinking if you stop overloading on water you will be under 200 pounds.  Again, overnight.

Thank you! Yea, I hate to buy new clothes since I have 49 more pounds to go. I drink so much water cause I live in Texas and it is so HOT! I work out a lot too and in the garden a bunch. I also heard that we should drink 1/2 our body weight in water..well, I have been drinking more. Now it is habit. I used to drink wine...good thing I didn't drink wine like that..Heehee! Well, I did on occasion and ended up pasture dancing all night long. I do have to go buy some new panties, jeans and everything. A few months ago I gave away my size 8 beautiful clothes from years ago. I am talking nice suits, dresses, blouses, skirts, etc. But I can go buy some new ones when I ge back to that size. Right  now I will settle for new drawers!

Thanks for the info. I am losing inches and the scales have moved down to 199, so I am a happy camper. I know the scales don't really matter. I just want to be back to my size 8 and in great shape again! I am hoping for Christmas goal.

Fitness Fitness Routine? Jul 03 2008
20:29 (UTC)

I started walking, then hiking, yoga, pilates, resistance bands and 5 and 10 pound weights, basketball (shooting hoops) burns a lot of calories and now I am into lifting weights (body building). I get bored too so I find things that are new as far as cardio. I love weight lifting so I know that won't get boring cause you have to push yourself and add weights as you go. I think of the things I loved to do as a kid and incorporate that into my day. Just staying active is a big key. I use house cleaning as an exercise tool and cooking, so on so on. Anything can be turned into exercise or calorie burners! Having fun is the key! Best to you!

Fitness Newbie Weight Lifting Gain...When will it reverse and I start losing pounds again? Jun 28 2008

My weight has been up and down all month. I have only taken 2 days off in 15 days on exercise so maybe I will force myself to back off tomorrow and Monday. I have been very adimant about drinking 112 ounces of water every day and feel so full. Maybe that is part of it. It is just so hard to stay still and relax. I love being active and then I look at my burn meter at night and it shows 3000-3300 at least. Just got in from chasing cows that got out..last night too. The cops called and we had to go round up the little doggies and then the cops showed up at the gate a couple of hours ago..same thing. I love the country life..always something to do. And the garden runs my life while it puts out which is cool! Thanks for your help! I will work on the solution. It is very hard to eat 2000-2300 calories a day, but I will try. Chomping on Pistachios now.

So, how long does this newbie weight gain last? I am going through it as well. My Dr. said it was normal and I am doing great and to keep up whatever I feel like doing. He noticed the muscles in my arms the minute he walked in. I forgot if he said the weight will increase for a few days or a few weeks. We had so much to talk about that I forgot to write it down. My daily burn is 3000-3300 nowadays. I stay very active (farm life) and weight lift and exercise almost every day. I eat ave. 1600 - 2000 calories. (2000 seems like a lot and I feel too full even though it is apples, popcorn and such.) Yesterday I burned 3300 and quit counting at 10:45 P.M. I could only get 1655 calories in me and I was too full for that late. I always get A's on my grade.

So, how long does this newbie weight lifting weight gain last? Damnit! I want to get below 200...I am sitting at 202 now. I only log my weight now once a week.

P.S. I will start a new thread on this since I interrupted  another person's post. Thanks!

Weight Loss BMR and Calorie Count Jun 28 2008

Oh my, now I am a bit confused..LOL!

I just took my BMR of 1622 and added my activities of 1982 ( I use sedentary and add all my exercises and being on my feet all day) and it came to 3604 calories and I am not even through for the day. It is 10:45 P.M. The CC burn shows 3300. I guess it takes that extra 300 and uses that for sitting and sucking air. OK, nevermind...I just unconfused myself! Oh Yea, I love that when it happens! Now my next dilemma...I only ate 1560 calories and I feel fine. I eat all day. Apples, oranges, etc. Now that I think of it..I would like some popcorn.

My point is I believe our body will tell us if we are screwing with it or not although it is nice and smart to have ground rules till we get in tune. I am still and hopefully always will be learning more and more. You folks teach me something new every single day...Thanks!Tongue out
