Health & Support Fibromyalgia, arthritis, normal aches and pains, something else? Aug 13 2009
16:48 (UTC)

My symptoms started last winter. AT first I just thought my wanting to sleep so much was due to the cold weather and being stuck inside all the time (I hibernate in the winter). Then I started notcing that my finger tips were turning white and going slightly numb. Still didn't think much about it.  A month or so later my foot started hurting, and got worse and worse till I could barely walk sometimes, I also had a stiff neck and swollen glands. Finally broke down and went to see Doc. She ordered bloodwork and when we got results I had all kinds of inflammation, so she referred me to a Rheumatologist. In the meantime I went to Chiro to see if he could do anything to help. He did physical therapy on my foot and within two weeks I was able to start running. Rheumatologist ran some more bloodwork and after getting results, she believes that I have Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD). Our symptoms sound similar. I have the migratory pains, one day here, next day there. Some days I can hardly function I feel so tired and other days I feel "normal". I feel better in the mornings but by evening when I sit down to watch TV, I start to tighten up and get stiff and sore. I have found that for me staying active all day helps and taking a walk at night instead of watching TV helps keep some of the soreness to a minimum. I am glad that I found out that I have this early on so that if it progresses we can treat it early on. So please do not hesitate to go to the Doc.  There are many different auto-immune disorders that have similar symptoms but they can rule some out just by doing bloodwork. It's worth it to know and maybe you will get lucky and it will be something they can correct (possibly an infection or minor inflammation).

Weight Loss What motivates you the most to loose weight? Aug 08 2008

This isn't probably the best answer and not entirely my reason for loosing weight but one day I was with my sister-in-law and a friend and they were talking about weight. They were saying how they didn't worry about their weight and wouldn't unless they were like a size 12 and then they would freak out. You can imagine how I felt sitting there wearing my size 12's!! I have never forgotten that day and now that I have lost 31 pounds and getting really close to wearing a size 4, I intend to rub it in their face now that I AM THE SKINNY ONE.

And on the brighter side of things, I want to be healthy and energetic for my kids while they are growing up.

Weight Loss I've been asked a new weight-loss question... Aug 08 2008

I'm right there with you. Whenever someone asks me how I lost  31 pounds and I say Diet and Exercise they look at me like I'm crazy. Like they wanted me to say I took these 40 pills a day and it just melted off. Ha-ha- but we will show them when we get healthy and thin and they stay fat and bloated from their magic pills, hehe

Congrats and keep up the good work!!

Fitness The cross trainer/elliptical machine - how long do you use it? Jul 29 2008

Geesh, I feel like a slacker now. I only use my elliptical for 20 mins a day, 30 mins when it's cold outside and I'm not able to get out. Mine is just a home model so I'm not sure how that compares to the resistance levels at the gym but mine has a weight loss program and a cardio strength workout. I have two small children and they don't allow me more time than that, hehe. I also noticed that some of you lift weights for 30-45 mins. What is your routine? I have a home gym/weight bench and I can't imagine what I could do on it that would last me 45 mins. I usually do presses and leg lifts and that takes me less than 5 mins. So what else are you guys doing?? Man I feel like a lazy bum now, hehe

Weight Loss The Last 5 lbs... Who else? Jul 28 2008

I'm down to my last 6, does that still count? I started at 156 and am now down to 126, which is farther than I intended to go when I started but as I reach each goal, I see that I can still stand to lose some more fat. So for now my goal is 120 and I will re-evaluate at that point. Then I am going to tackle building some muscle to keep it off, hehe

Weight Loss Frustrated!! Jul 26 2008

Mine is definitely fat, I can pinch an inch, haha or two. And my legs are actually fairly muscular, except for that very top inner thigh. I was using the elliptical every day and some weight lifting while it was cold out but now that it's summer I have been walking and bicycling instead. I have slacked off on the weight lifting but started that again this morning. I know I need to continue toning. And my upper abs aren't bad, not a six pack by any means, but not flabby. Just my lower abs have a nice pooch over them. It seems to slowly be going away, or so my husband says, but I'm not sure I believe him. I have lost 7 inches off my hips and only 1 off my waist with a total of 30 pounds lost. Just frustrating me but I will continue the battle. Lipo isn't for me, nor tummy tucks, if I can't get rid of it on my own, then it will have to stay, haha

Weight Loss what is a low enough daily sodium amount so that i'm not retaining water ? Jul 26 2008

2500mg is 100% of daily sodium. I try to stay under that to avoid water retention and bloating. Drinking water throughout the day will help if you go over.

Foods before bed hunger satisifier Jul 26 2008

I like Triscuit Fire Roasted Tomato crackers, a half serving is only 60 calories and usually stops my hunger and holds me through till morning. Or a Fiber One bar and a glass of milk if I have enough calories left. Foods high in fiber or protein are good snacks.

You are probably waking up becuase your body is hungry. Eat a little something shortly before bed and I think you will sleep better.

Weight Loss Trying to lose 45 lbs, don't know how to start... Jul 26 2008

In addition to cutting calories you should try to add in some exercise. This doesn't have to be 3 hours at the gym each day. That is unrealistic for most of us, even stay at home moms. I am a SAHM and I know everyone thinks we have all this time to do stuff and that all we do is sit around and watch TV all day- RIGHT!! I started my weight loss with an oldie but a goodie- Richard Simmons-Sweating to the Oldies. It's fun, not difficult and gets your heart rate up. My 5 and 2 year olds even got into the act occasionally.  Also if you have stairs in your house, walk up and down them. Not very exciting but again gets your heart rate going. Jumping jacks are a good one also. Note these are all things you can do right in your home while baby is sleeping and they don't require expensive equipment or a gym membership. If the weather is nice, get the baby into a stroller and go for walk or if you live in area where weather is really nice you could even try a baby carrier- get more of a workout carrying 10-15 pounds on your back, hehe. Just start slow and watch your calories, the weight will come off. As for the tummy thing, I had two 10 lb babies and I carried it all out front so I know where you are coming from. I am still working on that one. But I am also 37, so you have an advantage there. Good luck!!

Triscuit Fire Roasted Tomato Crackers- usually even a half serving will stop hunger pains. 120 calories per serving but also good source of fiber.

Fiber One Bars- Peanut Butter is my favorite but they also have chocolate and caramel versions. Around 140 calories per bar and very high in fiber. Helps fill that sweets craving nicely.

Fruits- watermelon, peaches, pineapple, apples, grapes

Reduced fat string cheese

Yoplait Fat Free Yogurt- tons of flavors, my favorite is Strawberry Orange Sunrise, only 100 calories per container.

Weight Loss 1000 cal deficit 3 days a week? Jun 12 2008
02:29 (UTC)

You could be working out too hard. Do you monitor your heart rate cause if you go over your target heart rate, then exercise backfires( I believe its called anaerobic exercise). I found that I lose more when I do small workouts, maybe 10-20 mins on elliptical, 10-15 on stationary bike and 10 mins weight lifting. I don't even do this every day now that it is nice outside I am doing more walking and playing with the kids. I also found that for me the 1000 deficit was too much. I dropped it down to 700 a day or sometimes even less and I am losing a pound a week. I have lost 23 pounds so far so I feel this is working well for me. Try changing things until you find what works for you. No one diet plan works for everyone the same.

Weight Loss Has anyone heard of/used LipoDissolve? Jun 10 2008

A girl I know had this done, she did lose weight, like 25 pounds or so but she also developed hard lumps in her abdomen, which doctors couldn't really explain. Also about 6 months after having it done, a lawsuit was filed against the clinic, apparently they were doing stuff that wasn't safe. They used needles to inject a solution of ??? (every clinic has different solution from what I have heard which is why this isn't regulated by the FDA). She would get 25-40 shots each session and then afterwards would be red, swollen and puffy from the solution. Now to me this doesn't sound worth it, I would rather and have lost 23 pounds by using this site to count calories and exercise. It took me longer but I will keep it off, she didn't. She has already gained most of it back because her eating habits didn't change and she sits in front of the TV for hours a day.

Please understand that while diet pills and stuff like this promise quick and easy results, they can be dangerous and have side effects that we don't even know about yet. Please take the time to lose weight the safe way, you are more likely to keep it off in the long run this way.

My sister swears by substituting applesauce for oils in cookies and cake recipes. This helps make them lower fat and more nutritious and for the most part you can't really tell a difference. Just thought I would throw that out there.

To satisfy my chocolate cravings, I buy the 100 calorie Hostess Chocolate Cupcake packs. 100 calories, like 5-6 grams of fiber, and a small amount of protein. Makes me feel better about indulging knowing I am getting a good amount of fiber in return for all that chocolately goodness, hehe

Weight Loss Has anyone lost weight w/o exercising or with Minimal?? How?? May 20 2008
19:29 (UTC)
22

I have found that I lose weight faster when I don't exercise, but my fear is that when that happens I am losing muscle instead of fat. I have lost 18 pounds so far since around the beginning of March. I started out doing elliptical for 20 mins, then aerobics for 40 mins and some minimal weight lifting. But my weight loss slowed and then I was unable to work out for a while due to time constraints and my weight loss cranked back up. Last week I had a respiratory infection and was told not to exercise, so I took it easy and ended up losing 3 pounds, go figure!! I am now doing a tad more weight lifting and only 15-20 on the elliptical but I am getting outside and playing with kids more now that it has warmed up. I workout in the evenings after i have my last meal, that way I know how many calories I need to burn to maintain my deficit which i try to keep around 6-700. Plu s and this is just my opinion, it helps to burn off that last meal before your metabolism slows for the day. Kicks it up a notch before bedtime so you burn more calories during part of your sleeping time. This is probably just wishful thinking on my part but it's working so I will keep doing it. So in answer to your question you will probably lose weight faster just watching calories, but you won't be toned so might look more flabby than with the weight on. But I am a firm believer in working out too much. I'm not sure how people do it 2-3 hours a day. I try to just do a little every day.

Weight Loss tumy...problem!!pls help!! May 18 2008

Let's be patient together. I am in the same boat. I have lost 5 inches off my hips and not a single inch of my waist. 18 pounds lost and not one single bit of it came off my tummy. I'm convinced that when I had both of my c-sections, they shoved the fat up to get it out of the way and forgot to spread it back out, hehe so now it's all right below my belly button. I have heard that belly fat is the last to go so i guess once i get rid of all my other fat then I will begin to make progress. Sure hope that happens soon, going to Florida in a month and really wanted it to be gone before I had to put on a swimsuit. Hang in there and keep plugging away at the cardio and calorie counting, hope we both see some progress soon. :)

Fitness Dumb Question....About Running? May 15 2008
22:46 (UTC)

Have you ever used an elliptical? Different placement of your feet on these can simulate jogging or climbing stairs and is so much less harsh on your joints. You could start out on one of these and see how you like it. While running is more intense cardio, I prefer the elliptical for the low impact benefits.  Using mine has helped strengthen my heart and increase my endurance. I have also lost 5 inches off my hips (a big plus). Good luck in whatever method you choose.

Health & Support Sharp pain in chest? May 15 2008

I was having chest pains in the area of my left shoulder but mine was more of a constant ache with a sharper pain when i took a deep breath. After three days of this I went to doc and was diagnosed yesterday with pleurisy, an inflammation around the lungs that can cause pain when breathing. They gave me anti-inflammatories and told me to rest a few days. This could be what you have but whenever chest pains are involved it is best to go see your doctor just to be on the safe side.

Weight Loss Advice???? Not losing and I don't know why!! May 11 2008

Are you counting your calories because no matter how much you exercise if you are consuming too many calories then you will not lose weight. And if you aren't counting calories, then it's possible you could be building muscle which weighs more than fat. Have you taken your measurements to see if you are toning up?? I used to exercise daily and I could not lose a single pound, but once I found this site and started watching my calorie count daily I have lost 16 pounds and that is exercising less frequently and less intensely.

One other possibility is that you might be getting too few calories for the amount of exercise you are doing. If your daily deficit(calories burned- calories consumed) is too high your body thinks it is starving and will store fat rather than burn it. For healthy weight loss you should aim for a 500-1000 calorie deficit daily.  Also when you are exercising, try to stay in your target heart rate range, if you go over this your body will start to burn muscle rather than fat.

I hope this helps some.

Weight Loss nutrition analysis May 09 2008
17:22 (UTC)

From what I have found online for me it says to try to keep carbs around 50%, protein 30% and fats 20% of daily calories. I try to eat 180 grams of carbs each day and adjust the others to try to get the right percentages. Also if you place your cursor over the date towards the bottom of the analysis page it will show you a breakdown of your nutrition for that day. Cholesterol, sodium, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, that sort of thing is shown there. I use that to watch my sodium intake therefore reducing water retention. It can be a bit overwhelming trying to get it to all come out right and some days I think I will go crazy and some days I just revert to just calorie counting cause my brain is fried. I also find the analysis page helpful for planning meals, if my protein % is low then I know I need to fix something with chicken or beef for next meal. This way I can also plan it so that I have a few carbs left at the end of the day for my bedtime snack, either Fire Roasted Tomato Triscuits or a Fiber One Caramel Bar, hehe. Hope this helps.

Weight Loss All you size 10-14 girls... May 09 2008

Ok, I'm feeling pretty dumpy now too. I have dropped 16 lbs and now weigh 140. I started out a size 12 and now can wear a 10, which I'm happy about, not thrilled, thrilled would be fitting into an 8. But anyway measurements are

Chest 38

Waist 30

Hips 41

But today I went to try on new clothes for the first time since starting my diet and I thought things would look so much better on me, but they didn't. I still looked very lumpy and out of proportion. Course its TTOM so probably worst time to try on new stuff, but I was really disappointed. Guess I will continue to buy loose fitting shirts and comfy shorts, none of the new stylish stuff looks right on me. Very bummed out now, hope tomorrow is a better day. Happy for those of you that "love" your bodies, wish I could be one of tyou but I just don't like what i see in the mirror. Guess I will keep working on those next 10 pounds.

Weight Loss breakfast May 06 2008

Fat free yogurt, wheat toast with reduced sugar strawberry preserves, and 8 oz of skim milk is what i have every day, puts me around 300 calories for breakfast. Reduced fat string cheese makes for a good snack, just enough to take the edge off or Triscuit has some really good new flavors that are a good source of fiber and whole grain. Popcorn, if you get the right kind can be a very filling snack and low cal/fiber. Hope this helps some.

Foods Sweet low calorie snack (Is there such a thing?). May 02 2008

Fiber One Caramel Bars, Oats & Chocolate, or Peanut Butter. These aren't as low cal as other stuff listed but still only have 150 calories. But they are loaded with fiber and low fat. I have one of these before bed with a glass of skim milk (protein) for a not so bad for you snack.

Also Hostess has new 100 calorie packs of chocolate cream filled cupcakes, white cupcakes, carrot cakes and banana muffins. These are surprisingly low fat and actually have a decent amount of fiber in them.

I splurge and have one of these as a dessert every once in a while to keep the chocolate cravings at bay.

Special K has protein bars that are tasty too, hehe

Pregnancy & Parenting How did you keep your child in their own bed? Apr 27 2008
15:20 (UTC)

Ok, people laugh when I tell them this but we used the "Sleep Fairy". My daughter was getting out of bed several times a night and I was pregnant with baby #2 and did not want to be getting up with both of them several times a night so we called in the "Sleep Fairy". I explained to her when I put her to bed at night that if she stayed in her bed all night like a big girl that the Sleep Fairy would bring her a surpise and it would be under her pillow in the morning, but only if she stayed in bed all night. We used small pieces of wrapped candy, but cheap little toys would work also. We had to be a little creative on getting it under her pillow in the morning without her seeing us, but kids are pretty gullible. One morning of not getting that candy and she decided it was worth it to stay in bed. I know, not the most healthy but its not long term, once she gets used to staying in her bed all night you can wean her off the Fairy, hehe. Hope this helps.
