| Maintaining | Off the Wagon and gained some back | Nov 13 2009 19:43 (UTC) |
|
I have read about eating at maintenance for a lower weight. I should try it. I intend to premake food, I went through a spell where I was unable to to do that. I'm currently trying hard to premake food and force myself to eat more at home. I walk to work (1 mile/one way) and sometimes I go to work twice so I can walk up to 4 miles just in transport. I don't have a car so I walk all over. Unfortunately, I have been less motivated to walk for exercise. Yesterday I finally walked 2 miles just for a work out, then I danced for a good 45 minutes afterwards. And I walked to work and back. I eat a lot of sugar, especially when I'm depressed. I froze a bunch of candy so I will try and curb the bingeing. I eat whole grains as much as possible. The light is a good idea, I've been thinking about getting one. Thanks for your suggestions! |

| Weight Loss | Does anyone calorie count in their head? | Nov 12 2009 18:33 (UTC) |

I've been in maintenance/off the wagon mode for several months now. Counting in my head doesn't work for me anymore. However, when I was in weightloss-mode, it did. I had been very diligent for months and got to a point where I could count in my head when I was out of the house. I will say that it still included cooking at home and portioning my snacks in small baggies and sticking with a plan.

If you can find MTV's The Grind, those are great for advanced dancers. I had a hard time coordinating the moves but if you catch on quickly, you can get a good work out. This is from the mid-90's. They're probably only on VHS. |

It depends on how fit you already are or aren't and how long you are keeping such a high heart rate. I used to burn close to that easily when I started cardio. I will say, I'm not an expert but you may be really pushing your heart. |

You should be allowed to get up and walk around in intervals. I think there is a jet lag diet to follow to avoid feeling gross after the flight. |

| Maintaining | Maintainers who lost significant weight--two questions about appearance | Aug 05 2009 17:54 (UTC) |

1) I lost 55 pounds, reached my first (biggest) goal last December. I still have the hanging skin on my belly. 2)I have the gaunt face and when I reached my last and final weight goal (5'5 1/2", 130lbs) people complained that I lost too much and noticed my face. I don't have answers except to repeat the others and say that a lot of this is due to genetics. It helps to lotion up and stay hydrated. |

Hyperbole, yes. But she continues to defend her use of violence references. When I ask questions she says I interrogated her. When I say that she accused me of something, she says that's like a verbal slap in the face. She uses phrases and terms like "I felt threatened", "cornered", "I had no choice".

| Again, thanks. y'all are confirming my suspicions. It gets weirder.
She is the one who makes references to violence. one time she started an argument and then said she didn't want to talk about it anymore. She cut me off early and walked off. I followed her and continued-I was very upset. She later said that my continuing made her feel raped. she has defended that reference.
I have been in verbal fights and I have been raped, I would never compare the two.
I think ultimately, I don't trust my BS detector. Then, I don't follow through with it. |

| Thanks, I understand those examples and I don't use them in theses talks. Latest example; she listed about 3 things I do that doesn't like. the truth is that I didn't do them. I called those accusations. she said that was a loaded term and needed to stop using it. She immediately then said it was like a verbal slap in the face. Another example is that she has a habit of changing her stories. she stated that she wanted to move in with me within the year. she later stated that she was dishonest (her word) and she never intended to move in that soon. I then referred to that as a lie. She says she isn't a liar and objects to me using the word lie. she has changed a lot of her stories and this is a current issue I have with continuing our relationship. | |||

this amateur ran into this issue the other week. I joined a running/walking group and was told that the night I attended was "speed runners' night". I was told that some of the men there were running 5 minute miles. One woman who complained she was one of the "slow ones" was a 10 minute miler. She was the last one to return. Just my experience. |

| Fitness | Birth Control Pills = Antimuscle? | Jul 20 2009 22:10 (UTC) |

I disagree with the idea that the effects of hormonal birth control are universally negative. I took Yaz for PMDD (severe PMS). Before I was on it, I was severely restricted in activity because of mood swings and pain. I could not maintain any regular schedule of physical activity (nor did I want to while depressed). After starting it, I was able to start and maintain a regular schedule of exercise and eating better. I lost 45 pounds within 10 months and have kept it off (even losing more afterwards). I stopped taking it a month ago due to loss of insurance. I'm still feeling really good. Combining calorie counting with exercise has helped me strengthen and define my muscles while burning the fat. As with all medications, the benefits should outweigh the possible side effects. But it really bothers me that women will automatically blame hormonal birth control for weight gain, plateaus or now this lack of muscle building ability. |

| Maintaining | Concerning Behavioral Parallels | Jun 16 2009 00:37 (UTC) |

I agree with Bubbles here on key points. I do know autistic people who have been misdiagnosed with OCD or are dually diagnosed with OCD. There are a lot of similarities in their treatment too. I think the OCD/anxiety is a chicken/egg argument to be honest. Anxiety can be chemically-based and just another issue with Executive Dysfunction. I know of autistic teens that attend college so that they will finish high school. Otherwise they will drop out because of the utter lack of stimulation and care in public schools. I plan to send my own son to college or something similar when and if the need arises. I tutor him math because they are so far behind in the elementary schools. For help in "balancing your life", frankly I didn't start to deal with that issue until I was in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) with a pyschologist. I have spoken with other autistic people who have done the same with good results. |

I have an alternative point of view and there seem to be a couple of issues, albeit related. Don't take this "the wrong way", I speak from experience. Have you been diagnosed or suggested that you have autistic traits, are autistic or Asperger's Syndrome? Eating obsessions, restrictive tastes and indifference are all present in many autistic people. For all intents and purposes, I was anorexic during my childhood. But not for weight loss reasons. I simply couldn't eat many foods due to smell and texture. When my tastes broadened, I couldn't stop eating and became overweight because my obsessiveness led to a lot of high-calorie bingeing. On the more immediate issue of recovering from ED, we use words like recovery because we are describing an addiction. Many people live with addictions all their life and they don't erase the addiction, they change the behavior. If you can accept that, then maybe you can refocus your eating habits and exercise regime so that they are healthy and make you feel good. I do see a problem with associating feeling good with doing something bad. You may need to see a professional because that suggests deep-seated issues with treating yourself well.

mperic81 hit it on the head. That said, I wonder if her husband (your brother) was present and if so, what was his reaction? This is behavior that shouldn't be tolerated in your own home, ever. True or not, no one should insult another person in their home. That is a boundary issue and needs to be corrected immediately. When I was a kid, I was forced to allow all sorts of derogatory comments about my body. Yes, it led to my having a completely distorted self-image and eventually taught me to be just as nasty and critical to others. And yeah, a woman needs a husband like a fish needs a bicycle. |

Greek yoghurt, it's very high in protein. If you get plain, you can control the amount of carbs that go in it. There are different kinds. I get high fat, high protein and one serving will satisfy for a long time. To be honest, I prefer a whole grain for breakfast because it feels good and has fiber which also helps satisfy me for a long time. Bob's Red Mills 7 Grain cereal has (I think) 6 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein per serving. |

I ride a cruiser and it's a lot of fun. I sit further back on it and it's really heavy. I like the amount of control I have from riding that I don't have with a car or bus. The critters I talk to are quail, lizards and ground squirrels. Bike riding on the road feels effortless compared to running, brisk walking or calisthenics. But I burn just as much on it and get a real workout on my legs.

soda during the day. My trick is to buy it at the coffee shop with a shot of vanilla in it at $2/drink. That way you can't possibly "chug it". no more "3 12-packs for $10"!!! Beer at night, strong stuff that you sip in a nice glass or mug. |

I get compliments on my arms. They were always just skinny, now there are visible muscles. Related to that is my crowning acheivement. I have never, ever been able to lift myself out of a pool. Always needed the ladder, very inconvenient! Last week I tried it and I was able to easily lift myself up with my arms!!!!

| Maintaining | who knows anything about carbs? | Jun 03 2009 23:12 (UTC) |

that's a really low amount of carbs. I think I was eating 200+grams when I was counting to lose! The best tool here is to use the analysis tool to determine and reinforce percentages. I lost weight with the 25%fat, 25%protein, 50carbs%. I try to stick with that for maintenance too but allow for more fat. As long as you're eating whole grains and getting enough fiber, I don't why you can't increase your carbs. Try multi-use carbs like potatoes, fruit, tomato products. |

Back in my hometown in California, a fifth grader raised a ruckus over the school food. Turned out, the district was shipping in prepackaged food from another region so that they could save $$ on payroll (fewer or no cooks preparing fresh food). I generally provide a sack lunch for my son but he is autistic and very picky. He actually learns how to try new things that the other kids are eating at school. And many kids are on the free meal programs, subsidized by the federal gov't. The district needs to use that money for healthy choices for kids that may get their best hot meal at school.
