| The Lounge | I am in love with this boy..... | Jul 06 2009 02:51 (UTC) |

oh this sounds terrible! my heart goes out to you after reading through what you said, and because i was similarly hung up on a boy for two+ years - and only recently have gotten over him. long answer short: you are right in doing what you plan to do. the point is, even though he has been so sweet and caring all through history, he isn't caring for you in the right way -- in the committed way that he fully CAN. and since he's not doing right, you should by moving on and letting go. it's a sort of dead end until either he comes to his senses, which it sounds like he might not because he's too comfortable with the way things are - being able to have the 'best of both worlds' (my favorite phrase for a while...) OR until you walk away. things are stagnant and he needs to work out what he wants with his on-again/off-again girlfriend. and the fact that he can have such an effect on you when you're together, and then just go away for periods of time, doesn't bode well. ultimately it is up to you, but i walked away because 1) he got her pregnant, and 2) i was really, really fed up and realized it will never be. and even though she miscarried, and even though i still saw him twice after i made that decision, it was still a relief to be free of the pain. he told me he didn't love her, and had never felt like this [i.e. when he was with me] with anybody else...etc etc. those words sounded like the sweetest music to my ears, but... nothing followed it up. and now, they are engaged, and quite happy, it seems. i no longer express more than a passing interest. i realize i empathize with you, but my experiences are not the same as yours, so best of luck with whatever you decide, but know that i will be thinking of you! |

| Foods | Too much fiber? | Jun 16 2009 00:29 (UTC) |
6 |
how do you feel today? it's been ~24 hours, right? like the two posters above me, i also eat a lot of fiber, mostly from fresh vegetables and fruits, and whole grains. i think if you're looking to up the fiber you'll want to do it slowly, but once your digestive tract gets used to it there should be no problem - high fiber is better than no fiber! i get 30-50g a day most days, don't drink a lot of water unless it's after cardio, and am just fine and regular :) hope this helps! |

| Foods | Too much sugar for my breakfast? | Mar 25 2009 05:51 (UTC) |
9 |
I think your breakfast looks fine. The sugar in milk is lactose, not sucrose (table sugar) or fructose (fruit sugar). I've heard a rule of thumb that is: "Eat less than 100g of added sugar a day," which is not to include sugar from fruits, veggies, or milk. According to that, you're doing quite fine. If you like the raisins, there's no reason to give them up - but you could vary your breakfast. And most of the breakfast cereals made with whole grains and designed to start you off on the right foot don't have too much sugar, if eaten according to the serving size on the box. So in my non-expert opinion, I wouldn't worry! Keep the packaged/processed foods and added sugar to a minimum and you can't go wrong =] |

| Foods | Salad as a Diet Food? | Jan 24 2009 07:05 (UTC) |
24 |
okay. i was so getting offline until i saw this. but i have to defend my favorite way to eat a healthy, flavorful, and filling meal! (totally just journaled about my salads too...heh) i see salad as a beginning with the container: now put the most colorful, juiciest, most fresh vegetables you can find in. no lettuce for me. spinach, red, green bell peppers. peas, beans, beets, olives, carrots, cucumbers, etc! who says you can't put vegetables in a salad?! there's no prerequisite for lettuce (especially iceberg - ew!) as a base either! okay next: (we have fiber, minerals and vitamins, legumes) - PROTEIN. i top mine with lean tuna salad, turkey/chicken breast (cubed, sliced), cottage cheese, feta/cheddar cheese (just a bit!)...sometimes all of that, or part of that. dressing: don't eat it. if i feel like it, i have red wine vinegar. or a bit of balsalmic vinaigrette...but again - who says salad dressing - full fat or otherwise, has to be a component of a 'salad?' the cottage cheese can also serve as 'dressing.' last step before enjoying: mix! or don't...and voila. bon apetit! maybe my difference in opinion (and hence super long reply - sorry!) is because my definition of 'salad' isn't so rigid. and because on campus at the U of Washington they have mighty fine salad bars with the works =) so hopefully i've shed a better light on salads woohoo! good night ya'll... |

| Health & Support | Female Question... | Jan 08 2009 08:46 (UTC) |
|
Personally, I started my period around the age of 12 and have never been regular. Two years ago my period stopped for 6 months but I had an eating disorder. My BMI never got below 18 though...Even now at a healthy weight, doing everything 'normally' I don't get my period sometimes for months and months (5, 6..) I am not sure what your diagnosis would be, and I agree seeing a doctor would be the best way to go, but not every woman has a 'monthly' period. And discharge is normal usually, but again only your physician or OB/GYN could tell you for sure. |

I am 5'8" [in the morning :)] and usu 5'7.75" by night haha... I weigh 137 now and wear a size 5 or 6. All my jeans are 27's or 28's and I think that means a size 6. Sevens run small and lucky's run big... When I weighed 115-120 I still wore the same pants, they were just baggier...when I weighed 150 they were really tight =/ They fit just right with a belt now =) |

| Weight Loss | Oatmeal is for breakfast. What do you ADD to make it tolerable? | Jul 27 2008 07:03 (UTC) |
32 |
AHHHH i LOVE oatmeal i eat the plain rolled oats kind or steel cut - and make sure to cook it in a pot oldschool style. i LOVE it by itself or i add vanilla soymilk and freshly cut strawberries if i feel fancy. if i want protein i'll make 1.5 servings and beat an egg to add into the pot. some like it with salt. i like mine with PB or nutella (just 1 tbsp +fruit/soymilk) if i really wake up with a sweet tooth. chopped walnuts, DRIED cranberries/fruit, cinnamon, even honey bunches of oats on top...sugar-free (and no fake sugar either) lowfat icecream... sorry to get carried away. the possibilities are ENDLESS and i've tried all of the above minus the salt. get creative and get cookin'! the stuff is great for you. |

| The Lounge | Going on a Cruise | Jul 27 2008 06:56 (UTC) |
4 |
my family thought of going on a cruise this summer and i freaked out because of all the 'goodies' that are available, as you say....and i'm really a health fanatic but it's hard when so much food is shoved at you! okay so. you still have a while, and here would be what i would do: 1. stick with your goals, don't overdo before the cruise to try and compensate for 'cheating' on the boat and don't give up on your diet on the cruise. always try to take two steps forward, even if you end up taking a step back. don't give up because from what i gather, lasting weight loss comes without too much restriction --it's a LIFESTYLE change. and life involves traveling and change and it'd be good to stick with your plans through it all. 2. tell yourself that YOU are in control of how much exercise you get on the cruise (because they usu have pools and/or other options to be active right?) AND what you put in your stomach. 3. set goals in ways that help you. what helps me is i have certain foods, no matter how good, that i just can't say yes to in a closed environment (traveling especially) because it's so hard to stop and then you don't have the option of working out more/logging onto cc :) -- but you can say "i will have 500 cals/meal and one dessert/day" or "at each meal i will only have four TYPES of food..." you know what i mean? whatever helps you control the desire to have a bit of EVERYTHING...because that can end badly. 4. this should have been one, but ENJOY the trip with whomever you're going!! it's summer and cruises are very fun, from what i hear. pack in as much physical activity as you can and just listen to your body. if you're extra hungry one day, don't be afraid to indulge. don't fear it but definitely have goals :) hope i assuaged some of your worries -- best wishes!! |

| Fitness | Toning arms | Jul 27 2008 03:43 (UTC) |
5 |
a great goal would be to tone up those arms- 1. lose overall body fat by getting that heart rate up for 30-50 min every other day with more intense cardio. if running is out of the question, try elliptical or swimming for resistance and some good fat burning. walking is great but not heart-pumping enough! 2. define arms...2 kgs is about 4.5 pounds - i would say that's a bit light for weight lifting (don't worry you won't bulk up if you up to 7/8 pound dumbells!!) focus on back to back bicep/tricep exercises (e.g. curls at 8 to 12 reps followed by tricep extensions at 8 to 12 reps, repeat twice/three times)...try a variety of exercises to work the back and chest too, as those muscles are interconnected. don't worry, women really don't bulk up easily and i know that's a fear. toning is not necessarily synonymous withactive muscle-building...i like the 'bikini-body challenge' found on http://www.shape.com/workouts/bikini_body/&nb sp; good luck! |

that's really really interesting that BDD goes both ways. i agree - here on cc we definitely see more people who're dissatisfied with weight/measurements in that they wish they were SMALLER. from your pics you look very normal - NOT disgusting and stick thin because you have a healthy hue about your skin and such. i think you're on the slim side because your weight for your height is low-ish, but you've probably been blessed with a super-fast metabolism!! i have friends on both sides and myself am 5'8" at 142 now with a thigh measurement of 20.5" too (just out of curiousity i measured just now) but my stomach area is my problem area. if you are eating right and enough for your height/activity level i wouldn't say you're malnourished at all! be SURE to treat yourself well physically and menally and gain weight the right way - lean muscle mass, eating healthy, etc!! good luck and don't think poorly of yourself if you can help it. i know sometimes it might be the BDD talking but now that you're diagnosed you can fight it. :) best wishes. |

i think the laxatives will stay in your system until you basically excrete them out with food. say your usual non-constipated cycle is ~24 to 48 hours (average person's digestive rate according to my physician) you should be fine for tomorrow night, especially because i think you took a bit more than would be considered 1 dosage. next time (if there is one) start with 1/2 or 1 dosage (says on the box/back of pills) and if you don't see results THEN increase gradually. or else you end up with the 'mass exodus' vanessa1031 talked about..usually the next morning :) not too fun because it can last all day). and don't worry - it's not TMI - where else are you gonna ask without paying $$$, right?! i hope this helps! i have severe IBS issues and took laxatives for a while when it was pretty bad, but haven't had to in a while, so i hope my advice is sound. everyone's different, again, but yes. read labels fo sho and listen to your body always. |

I'm 5'8" and at 143 right now...trying to get down to 130 (127 or 128 is my ideal goal)!! supposedly the healthy range is from 133 to 150 if you're 5'8" and medium-boned like moi --according to some BMI calculator i used...but I'm not sure how accurate that one is. |

Hm. I like this... Can't live without: Jesus A best friend My love for drawing people Can live without: Small asian eye jokes Retainers (doomed to have a nocturnal lisp for the rest of my life) Cars/petroleum based vehicles (I'd love to live in a society that is more active without trying so hard, you know? I mean, a society that moves a bit slower, facilitates walking/bike riding to destinations, and doesn't need gyms to lose weight. A society that's a bit more chill, a little less extreme. My summers in China and summer in Costa Rica makes me think this often. *sigh*) |

| Weight Loss | Iam Pretty Confused. I need some advice | Apr 03 2008 07:02 (UTC) |
|
hey sk8ter- i dunno if you've received the advice you need, but i think a thing that works for me to tell you is that you should LISTEN to your body. i think i've told that to others too, but it's important that you understand your weight, appetite, and motivation to exercise day to day will inevitably change and fluctuate. on the days you don't exercise, eat a little less than you would if you did exercise. get a good balance of weights and cardio, and ~2000 sounds good for your height. again though, these counters are mostly estimates, and the scale shouldn't be your best friend. i understand you care about how your clothes fit; that's mostly how i gauge how i'm doing in my efforts too (and a few pounds make a huge difference!) so be attuned to how you FEEL, and play around with types of foods and how they make your body react. are you super hungry after eating 2000 a day? if so, up the cal intake a bit. try to incorporate as much movement as you can into a day; you've read those little tips and hints. i go to UWashington and it's a huge campus so i get to walk everywhere and go to the gym. work with what's best in your situation. remember - the end (be it a certain weight -- or if you're at that weight -- maintenance) is what's important. this is a lifestyle we're learning how to live. don't let the day-to-day stuff get you too down k? you say you eat 'healthy' - but what does that mean? if you still have q's definitely keep asking. age shouldn't matter too much (i'm 18), nor should personal weight. you're gonna want sound advice from people who care, and those taking the time to reply to you - i think it's safe to say - care as best we can. |

| Fitness | Cardio is kiiling me! Well, at least my shins! | Apr 02 2008 23:06 (UTC) |
17 |
do you have any history of injury? you could have shin splints, which can result from years of wear and tear on your shin area (muscle, ligaments, even compressed nerves) ... or you might be overexerting in that area as of recently. if you don't have a history with this (which might indicate necessity of proper medical treatment) then just try changing your cardio routine. focus on activities which are less stressful to your shins and don't need you to constantly flex your foot 'up' (esp running...) try elliptical/swimming/rigorous yoga...running and other strenuous lower limb activities should be avoided until the pain subsides and is no longer recurring... if you do do elliptical, don't set the incline too high either...go for more resistance training :) i'm no MD but i hope this helps? on another note, during my elliptical cardio session yesterday i was shooting for an hour - and around 7 or 8 min both my feet feel dead asleep...there was no pain per se but i ended up stopping around 35 min because i didn't want to do too much damage?? anyone have any ideas about what's up? i did low incline and tried putting pressure differently on the feet, but it didn't help at all! sorry to write an essay!! |

Apples are one of my favorite foods! Way to make a great discovery! Fuji apples were my fav for the longest, but I love Cameo now and a crisp Golden Delicious is always good. Pink Ladys are sweeter but still crunchy. I agree - it's hard to find a good Braeburn (mushy) or Red Delicious. Jonagold and Gala are okay too - worth a try. Here's a good link for apply tastes and uses. Best of luck deciding your fav! |

| Foods | Is eating late bad ???????? | Apr 02 2008 17:46 (UTC) |
5 |
i'd say you really have to listen to your body. if you're hungry before bed, a small (key word) snack is totally fine. if you can make it three hours before bed without eating, that's preferable because it gives your body time to begin the digestive process. i have IBS, so if i eat right before bed it feels icky - like the food remains undigested in the morning (cuz your body's metabolism slows when you go to sleep). but that's my case - again...some good ol' common sense is good in this case because there's no prescribed 'formula.' :D |

| Foods | Sushi question? | Apr 01 2008 22:35 (UTC) |

i love spicy tuna/salmon rolls without the cream cheese cuz i'm lactose intolerant. BUT if you're looking to reduce calories sashimi is a good alternative - it's [good-quality] fish on rice. get plenty of wasabi on there and you've got a great protein/carb mix. ask for brown rice and you get more fiber too. cali rolls/imitation crab rolls are good too, but kinda boring like knevils32 said. |

| Weight Loss | Anyone have a calorie intake suggestion? | Apr 01 2008 06:10 (UTC) |
|
hi rachdaniel88, i'm no nutritionist, but i think you are at the 'moderate' level of activity according to cc, and maybe even on the 'lighter' side - but you exercise plenty for a healthy lifestyle. i think if you try 1300, 1600, and 1900 for a week or two at a time and see which your body responds to (and it may take switching it up a bit) best, you might start seeing results. total calories matter, but portion size, when you eat, and WHAT you eat are all equally important factors. always eat breakfast (~350 cals), maybe a snack 3 hrs later (~150 cals) and lunch an hour or two later, depending (~400 cals)...a small snack (~150) in the afternoon is appropriate on high activity level days, and dinner shouldn't exceed 450 cals in an ideal situation. also, a good balance of fats (unsaturated), protein, and carbs is important (try varying the amounts of protein from lean, white meat, legumes, and good fish (halibut, salmon, cod...) and carbs if you get stuck on a plateau. fats should make up 20-30% of your diet and protein a similar amount. the remaining should be carbs (from whole grains, fruits, veggies, etc). if you find your body needs more protein for lasting energy, try upping protein to 40%, carbs to 40%, and fats to 20%. i'm 18, 5'8" (in the morning:D ), 150 lbs, and trying to lose ~25 lbs too (have been for a couple of years)...i think i know what to do, but i'm definitely an emotional eater and too much of the "right foods" still leads to weight gain. i could go on and on (i've totally written you an essay already) but i think i've answered your q already. try to play around with the number of calories you intake and carefully observe how you feel (energy levels, too full/hungry by the end of the day, etc...) overall, i think if you listen to your body carefully you'll find a good place to start losing that weight for good! best of luck, and email me if you want to reply! |
