Fitness What should I do for exercise during the school year? Aug 11 2008
04:57 (UTC)

Fitness during the school year is tough!

I know it can be so tough to seriously pursue a musical instrument and keep up activity (more than most people think!)

Something that is great to get in the habit of doing  is incorporating exercise into your practicing routine.  For example, let's say you practice for an hour, then go jog around for 20-30 minutes, practice for another hour.  Or, every 30 minutes, take a 10-15 minute break where you do simple weights and crunches.  Not only does this help you to fit in your exercise, it also gets you in the habit of taking structured breaks while practicing (which help prevent injury).  Also, I have found that the awesome mental benefits from exercise help so much with focus while practicing.

Weight Loss Trying to loss weight without counting calories Jul 28 2008

Actually my friend lost about 30 pounds by doing this.  She also cut out fruit at first and slowly introduced it back in.  Her decision to do this was based more on a lack of energy, but she lost weight just the same.

Some things that she loves are quinoa, spelt flour, avocados, yams, and various seed oils.

Of course she had to find a balance between the no sugar diet and calories.  She started off not worrying about calories at all, just experimenting with the new diet.  Slowly she started to make sure she was within a good calorie range.  You will find you are full longer though without the "fluff" foods.

Some books she recommends are "Get the Sugar Out" and "Sugar Blues"

Good luck!

So here is my dilemma. I feel like when I only diet and do not exercise, I lose weight steadily.  However these past two weeks I have been hitting the gym with a nice mix of cardio and weights 5-6 days a week.  Calorie count says I've been burning about an extra 800-1000 calories.  So, I've been upping my intake to 2000 calories instead of 1300 to avoid a deficit larger than 1000.  However, ever since I've been doing this, I've stayed steady with my weight if not gained a little like today.  Could this be temporary water retention?  Should I drop my calories back to about 1600 even though that will put be at a large deficit?  I don't know what to do!

I think it takes about a week for almost all of the blood to come back.  I also know you can't give blood closer that three months apart so I don't know if it takes that long?

I've given blood plenty of times, and just by appearance and from them setting the bag on me, I'm guessing you give away about a pound of blood?  Just a guess though.

However, awesome post!  I'm a huge advocate for giving blood, so everyone go out there, lose some weight, get free snacks, and save a life!

Seriously, you've read my mind.

For the past week or two I've been going through this as well.  I feel like the more fiber I eat the worse it gets.

I've recently tried the smooth move tea, or senna tea.  It helped once, but then not at all the next day.  Then my mother suggested I try the plan they put people going into stomach surgery on.  Its the clear liquid diet, it's only supposed to be done for 24 hours, no more than that.  Basically its subsisting on jello and broth and water for 24 hours.  That also worked for me but I was very unhappy as I love food.

I'm at the point now where I know I'm still blocked, but it's not quite as bad as it used to be.  I feel like it will be an ongoing struggle.

If you find anything that works let me know!

Fitness what is the best routine to stay active and fit WITHOUT gaining muscle? May 21 2008

I'm not too sure about the exercising, but as far as the headaches and backaches go there are a few things I would take a look at first.

First of all, I would eliminate artificial sweeteners from your diet for a little bit if you have any in there.  My roommate has horrible reactions to artificial sweeteners such as back pains and headaches.  Same goes for caffeine.

I have chronic pain in my left shoulder.  At some points a few years ago, I could barely hold a piece of paper.  I sympathize with you, I think I saw about 4 different doctors, all of whom had absolutely no idea what was wrong with me.  And then I saw an acupuncturist, and it was a life changing experience.  I would highly recommend seeing one.  If needles freak you out, see someone who specializes in acupressure, but the needles don't hurt at all.  The acupuncturist was the first person who could say back to me the exact location of the pain and the exact feeling of the pain without twisting my words.  She also then listed off other symptoms I had.  While I can no longer afford weekly sessions, noticing where they put the needles on my body made me more aware of how my body carries its tension.  I still have the pain, but it comes less frequently, and I am able to target trigger points in my body when trying to solve it.

This is a great idea!

Hmmmmm.... my goals are...

1)Go to the gym 6 days a week.  My mom just got a membership to the same gym, so hopefully we'll be pushing each other.

2) AVOID LATE NIGHT SNACKING!  Oh man, it's my downfall.  Actually, I'm going to set an 8 oclock time limit right now.  No eating after 8 oclock at night!

3) Drink only water and tons of it.  I think I can last 75 days with only water!

4) Eat above 20 grams of fiber each day.  I really need to get more fiber!

I think thats it for goals now.  I really want to stick to them!  75 days is a great length of time!

Hopefully I'll hit my ten pounds lost mark during these days and then I'll treat myself to a massage!

As for the water question...  I have one glass in the morning.  Then at work I always have a huge solo cup full of water.  A lot of my job is pushing paper.  After I get one group of papers out of the way I'll tak e 3 or 4 huge gulps of the water.  I usually end up drinking about 3 or 4 of these 12 ounce glasses before 1 or 2 in the afternoon.  It provides a great break from work and also allows me to take in tons of water without really noticing.

PS lynnhaslost- great idea about the 3 apples a day... my sweet tooth is the size of the atlantic ocean :-)

Weight Loss 18-21 yr olds. . . do they exist here? May 19 2008

Wow there are a lot of people! That's awesome!

To answer the newer questions..

*Of course I have a cheat day.  It's usually due to social situations.  I have a really great group of friends when I'm home from college, who all love salty sweet bad for you foods.  Usually I'm fine, but sometimes I break.

But something new I've found is that I don't feel guilty afterwards.  Usually I try to anticipate the extra calories by cutting out snacks earlier in the day.  Also, I saw a celebrity on television one day (of course I forget who!) who was beautiful and skinny and was asked about her diet.  Her answer was "I've found that I fail at eating a good diet if I get too stressed out.  For example, I ate a chocolate sundae on the plane today, I'm not going to stress out about it-that removes all the joy out of the sundae in the first place.  I'm going to enjoy the fact that I ate it, and move un with a healthy lifestyle."  I thought this was a good way to live.

*Exercise is actually a huge part of my weight loss plan.  If you couldn't tell from the username, I play the flute- it's actually my major and future profession.  Part of what scares me about "diets" in the first place is the chance that I might feel too weak and hungry to play my instrument.  I avoid that by eating tons of protein but I also do a lot of cardio in order to strengthen my lungs.  I find it helps make the weight loss more steady as well!

Weight Loss Frosted shredded mini-wheats May 18 2008

They do sell mini-wheats that are unfrosted.  I think that if you concerned about your sugar intake but still want sweetness, maybe the unfrosted mini-wheats paired with some berries or other type of fruit would be better.  I also noticed in the ingredients that the frosted mini wheats contain high fructose corn syrup where the unfrosted do not.  That would be the deal breaker for me!

I'm 19!!

Hmmm what motivates me...well I can find an excuse to do about anything so I have a list of a ton of reasons to keep going.  They range from just the plain old I want to be healthier to anything as petty as to fit into a new dress. Anything that gets me on the treadmill and away from the junk is a good enough reason for me.  But when it comes down to it, bad knees and hips run in my family and a lot of the trouble is weight.  So I figure if I take off the weight now, I will have less trouble in my adult life.

I have lost about 3 pounds so far!  I've been eating healthier and going to the gym for a week now.

I've been on and off this site over the past year.  This is really the first time I've buckled down and done it though!

I love to add one or two drops of liquid stevia and some lemon to seltzer water.  It tastes like a light, fizzy lemonade, has zero calories, and is not artificial at all!

You may be using too much.

I remember thinking the same exact thing.  One day I realized that two drops of liquid stevia is all i need for a bowl of oatmeal.  It won't make your food as sweet as sugar, or in the same way.  But if you want a hint of sweetness, I think its perfect!
