I'm so glad you posted this topic because I was wondering that myself! I've lost 55 pounds since 2005. Veerrrry slow weight loss until this year and I can see the differences but now that I've lost this much I see how much more I have to lose! I mean will these stupid thighs EVER get smaller? So I completely understand where your coming from. I agree with the others who have said that it's normal to feel this way and some days will be better than others. Our self image has been distorted by the super thin models we see everyday in the media and television. We think we aren't where we're supposed to be unless we look like them...I'm here to tell ya that's simply a lie. And I'm not going to fall into that pit anymore...I hope you don't either. Society has dictated we all be a perfect 120 pounds no matter how tall, short or muscular we are. I'm 5'5" tall and I'd look like I was sick if I weighed 120...trust me, been there done that. We need to be happy with ourselves...whether that's at 130, 160 or 200. I'm probably always going to have "thunder thighs" because of my genetics (thanks grandma!), so I need to focus on the positives and de-accentuate the negatives.
Congratulations on losing 50 pounds! Go get a nice massage...you deserve it! |

Is there such a thing as too much fiber? |

You can easily go up to 50-60 grams of fiber with no adverse affects to your system -- particularly if you drink a lot of liquids (and you need to be drinking a lot of liquids). And more particularly if you are eating healthfully
the Chinese regularly ingest upwards of 75grams of fiber per day with no health risk
yeees. proper hydration is absolutely crucial. Take it from someone who landed in the hospital from having fiber literally stuck in her intestines, not having been flushed out with liquids. lol! sorry if that's too much information.. just hydrate properly (:
!!!!!
You poor thing...wow, that had to hurt. Hmmm...now I have to wonder about that pain I've been getting lately. I'd better go drink another liter of water just to be sure. |

Ladytrekki: I do much better at the gym than working out at home, I like the social atmosphere. I have DVD's that just sit on the shelf at home, plus my stupid dog barks at me when I'm working out, or when I'm doing floor work, sit ups, planks and such she licks my face....likes all that salt from the sweat. I've heard a lot of good reviews on Jillian's 30 day shred if you are looking for a new workout. Or just go to the library and check out a variety -- love my library! My Ipod is filled with ripped CD's from the library.
Happy Friday! :)
What's this library you mention here? Sounds like a place I need to be!
DVD's don't work for me either...I have a few collecting dust myself. Where I'm lacking is from the strength training end. There are lots of resources online in regard to pictures, etc. But it would be helpful to find a routine where the other person works out and you can follow and imitate their movements from your iPod. Thanks for the tips!
I like your new plan by the way di_p...you came up with a great compromise that will give you even more incentive to get to your goal. Smart! Since those last 25 pounds are the hardest to get off...that's when you'd need a personal trainer the most.
How's your injury doing? Are you able to run now? Whenever I've tried to run I get this horrible pain in the front of my leg. Think it's called shin splints? I don't know but it definately stops me from being a runner!
I remember in junior high i tried out for the track team. Had to quit cause it hurt too much. LOL! Didn't care for the whole experience even then. But I was never good at sports...and as a result I was always one of the last to be picked. Always SO embarrassing. I think that's one of the reasons I never enjoyed playing any sport. Even volleyball. Though if I had to pick one sport to be involved in that would be it...just cause you usually don't have to run. I tried out for BB but that fell through because my breasts were too large...was uncomfortable. (I developed young!) Forget baseball/softball/whiffleball, couldn't hit the ball if it were on a stick. Well...maybe. LOL! And I hated touch football...and blood ball was torture. The boys would kick the ball to hit me everytime just to see me run. Aarrg...this is bringing back bad memories. I tried out for cheerleading and was SO close to making the team. But didn't. Good thing I can sing otherwise I'd wouldn't have been involved in anything in school.
I wouldn't go back to junior/senior high school for nuttin! |

Lady... I don't blame you wanting to work out at home. It's much more comfortable for me too. It really was when I was just starting out. I was so embarrassed at being fat I just felt like I had a big red light on my head. But, if I were to make at home exercise recommendations, I'd say, save your money up and get an elliptical machine and a set of weights. You could get in on the ground floor for about the same as the Wii and the Fit board.
Well, I already have a very nice stationary bike and a set of weights. I used to have a stepper but never used it so I gave it to my brother. I might get an elliptical machine sometime in the future...just not anytime soon. I didn't realize how expensive the wii is...I thought I saw a price tag of $80.00. Over $200 is WAY out of my budget.
Speaking of working out...time to do just that! |

Friends, it's funny. I am NOT a shopper. I do not enjoy shopping, going to the dressing room, comparing and contrasting items, or spending money generally. In fact, I am known to be FRUGAL (cheap, to some.) LOL. If I can't buy it at Target, it pretty much doesn't exist for me. And of course I still have some of the old trepidation from the days of trying to shop for a 290 lb person. As you all know, it SUCKS to shop for clothes when you get up to sizes you know are not "normal" for you!
My SO, OTOH, is a shopaholic. He even pays (GASP) rrrrrrETAIL sometimes. He knows all the spots for kewl and high quality goods.
So let's just say my wardrobe, for casual stuff, is a bit...wanting. I've plenty of nice work clothes, tailored and purchased over time to fit me, and because I'm tall, they have accomodated 30-40 lb. weight swings in the past. However, everything else I own is either 3.99 shorts, or free tshirts I've accumulated from 10K runs, volunteer events, and bike rides. Oh yeah, and sweats/yoga pants. SO is vocal in his dislike for these items.
SO has had enough of this. So with all the wedding pre-dinners, family gatherings, visits, and photographs coming up, last night he became my personal shopper and got me all decked out at the Eddie Bauer store. Can I just say he found me the best pair of jeans I have ever worn? My measurements these days are 36-30-40, and their jeans have a bit of spandex in them for comfort as well as makes them look like you're a fashion model. He also found me great fitting capris in white, black and navy, some blouses and sleeveless numbers, and a pretty flowered skirt with lime green t-shirt. Whoo hoo, now I won't have to buy clothes for another 5 years, ha!(good motivation to stay on the CC bandwagon, no??!) And all the summer stuff was on sale, making me quite happy to put up with all the dressing room crap. And the clothes were well made for we gals with some "junk" in the "trunk." Yay Eddie Bauer!
So hope everyone got a laff or two from my update. I will post the wedding photos when I have them, it will be at sunset on August 30th. We are walking in to "blackbird" by the Beatles, and the song of celebration (sung by my brother) will be "You are so Beautiful." We have written our vows, the preacher's been hired, and all our friends and family will gather round as we light a unity candle and pass the flame from person to person. Then of course some supper, a few drinks, some dancing, singing, and pickin' and grinnin', and we'll be hitched.
Oh my goodness RG! Your wedding plans look so cool! I've never heard of having a bike ride the day of. LOL! Awesome. I love the idea actually...what a wonderfully healthy way to start your marriage. Thanks for sharing your website and wedding plans. I like the idea of a sunset ceremony too. How unique! At least to me...but I'm not very well read on this stuff so it could be something normal for all I know. I like it!
You sound like me when it comes to shopping. I'd rather not. I go and get what I need every other year in the form of underwear more or less and that's about it. And it's mostly cause of my size...but also cause I'm kinda frugal when it comes to the clothing area. I like clothes that are built to last so I usually go to Sears when I need an outfit though I've been known to go to Target on occasion. Target doesn't have a lot of clothes for 2X folks though...at least not anything I'd wear. They just don't make decent clothes for big people. One of my biggest pet peeves actually is that fact. I get kinda ticked everytime I go clothes shopping as a result. Might be different now that I've lost some weight but it's still not to the point for me where I'd be able to find anything "cute".
Never thought about putting herbs in ice. That's a neat trick!
Good luck in selling Mikes house. This is definately not the market for sellers.
I giggled out loud when I read about your wardrobe and shopping experience. Thanks! |

Okay, so there was this younger girl, maybe in her 30s that did the step class, the dynamic training class and the yoga...and she wasn't even sweating. She had a full hour of step before the dynamic class (which is circuit training, high intensity, no rest between sets). My shirt, socks, were soaked and my hair was drenched. After the 1/2 hour class, I had sweat dripping from me, it took about 35 minutes into the Yoga session before the sweating slowed down. I used to be like that girl, hardly break a sweat, I guess because I'm older and more out of shape? I'm okay with the sweat, makes me feel I'm burning that fat...but honestly ...
Got my a.m. workout in, on the AMTi 100 http://www.precor.com/comm/en/amt/amt100i/, it's a new machine from Precor that simulates your natural movements, like stair stepping and running. Did 60 minutes followed by 5 minutes of planks and stretching.
I remember when I never used to sweat too! I'd get all red in the face but that's about it. LOL! Now I get red in the face as well as sweat all over...I consider it progress. Like you said...you feel like your actually burning fat.
That's a cool lookin machine...how did you like it? My brother works at Precor, lucky duck gets to test out all the machinery. |

Wow 2bb...you really went through the wringer during Katrina huh? I can see why you went to canning. I've thought about starting to do it for a few years now. So much healthier than all the processed foods out there. It used to be the cheapest way to stretch your food but now canning has gotten kinda expensive.
*flashback* I just had a memory of our pantry area at home...FULL of cans of food. And I remember thinking "yuck", I'd rather have the "normal" food we buy at the grocery store. Pffftt...how times have changed. I never knew hard poor we were. We were better off than lots of other folks. I always had clothes to wear, and shoes...even if they were hand me downs. Now I realize why our family was kinda shunned...we weren't in the "popular" crowd. And we were considered middle class!
Well anyway...canning is definately something I'm interested in doing and will do one of these days. As well as growing my own food. Fresh veggies from the garden in the back yard. Yum! |

See, that's the problem. I really don't see them coming down in price, nor becoming more available. Nintendo seems to be doing it on purpose. I'd say, if you find one, jump on it! Just be forewarned... the games for it aren't cheap either. Honestly, unless there is absolutely NO other way for you to get exercise, I'd almost pass. I just don't think its a good enough substitute for walking or doing something else like that. But, that's just one opinion and you'll find many others who would disagree.
Ah! Well...it was just a thought. I don't have the extra money right now anyway so no biggee. Here at work they have a gym...one of the perks of the job. I just like doing it at home is all. Call me anti-social...just hate having to share I guess. LOL! |

Ahhh the world of lists... gotta love it!! I just entered my entire week of workouts into an Excel format. I will print the page, which is 6 days, and tape it to the door of the exercise room. That SHOULD be all the "entering" I need to do, now that I'm not logging food as much anymore. I feel a touch liberated.
Jella... I am betting that curry sauce is a thing you can only get there. I'm going to look at a couple of the grocery places around here though, just in case. Otherwise, I AM planning a trip to Cairns near Christmas, maybe I can find some then! HAHAHAHA!! Most people go to Cairns to swim the Great Barrier Reef... I'm going in hunt of curry sauce. How sad is that????
My friends, to all of you who are not familiar with Wii, I have to tell you a story. We bought this video game back around Christmas. I am NOT a big gamer person, but a lot of the games require movement and are relatively simple for the gamer challenged. Last night we bought a new game which is based around the Summer Olympics. I kid you not, I can barely move my arms this morning!!! I was swimming... and running... and throwing... GOOD GRIEF!! That's better cardio than my elliptical!
I've been pricing the Wii out myself. Since I don't go to the gym I thought it would be an acceptable purchase. Waiting for them to go down a little bit more though before doing that. Besides....they seem to be sold out everywhere.
I LOVE excel vstar! I do everything in excel...including my checkbook and budget. Very useful program.

527 jars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Merciful Heavens!!!!!!!!!!!! You're a wild woman 2bb! The Wii would be a snap for you! I really enjoy it. The games I play are very simplistic and mostly just moving and being silly. I just could not BELIEVE how much of a workout this game was. I think I'll play again tonight... HEHEHEHE!
Well, a slight dilemma has arisen for me. I was supposed to have lunch with a friend today, thus I did not pack my lunch as I normally do. Unfortunately, said friend is sick, so she called to cancel our lunch. And now, I'm left in the world of fast food with no sandwich!! YOIKS!!!!! Fortunately, I'm told that there is a sandwich shop just downstairs from my office that makes yummy wraps with lots of veggies. So, I guess I'll try that. Honestly, I burn an extra 900 calories in my workout every day, so why should I worry?? Deep breaths... deep breaths.....
LOL! Your doing so well vstar...good job.
If your playing on the Wii your getting more workout of a workout than you think. So you can afford to eat a little more calories today. No worries! |

Man...your talk of canning brings back memories. When I was a little girl we used to go pick choke cherries and mom would can TONS of syrup and jellly. Mmm...tasted SO good! She also made pickles from the cucumbers we grew and canned tomatoes too. My generation don't know how to can stuff anymore...we need to get back to basics. I need to learn how! Hey gang...
I'm still around, just went into lurk mode. Sounds like everyone is doing well though...thats good. :)
Not making too much progress on the scale I'm afraid. Very slooowww losses. But Im still workin at it! One of these days I'll get the scale to move more than a half a pound.
Got a food scale yesterday...and only 2 bucks! Cool to get a good deal. Going to try to weigh my food out and see if that makes a difference at all. Perhaps I've been eating more than what I think. Generally the only thing I'd have to weigh is meats and fruit. Otherwise it's the measuring cup I use to measure food amounts.
On the plus side I love it when I see some progress in my clothes and jewelry. So fun to put the rings on different fingers cause they are super loose. Plus I love that I'm seeing more muscle on my legs...fats still there but it's getting less and less. So cool to see bones coming out too...like on my collar bone. Those are the things that spur ya on when the scale doesn't wanna cooperate.
Anyway...y'all take care k? Keep on keepin on! |

Well steph...hope your doing better now. I understand about stress eating...sucks. I've been doing more of that lately myself. Tryin to get it back under control! Most of the food is healthy but still...calories are calories.
Doing better today and hopefully that trend will continue. I bought a little food scale today. Not sure if it will make a difference but I think part of my problem is I think I'm eating less than I really am. I was thrifty today and went to the local goodwill and got one for 2 bucks! Proud of that effort. I'm usually goin for the top of the line item but I'm learning how to be thrifty.
Anyway...hope everyone is on track and losing poundage! Welcome to all the newbies. |

Hey y'all!
Olivia...if you think Kansas is boring try North Dakota.
I'm onboard too! When I started this "life change" in March I was losing 5-6 pounds a month. This last month I only lost 3 though...not good. I've been giving in to the cravings too much lately I think...lots of emotional garbage going on and I can tell.
I started out at 266 pounds and I'm down to 239 so I'm making progress but have a long way to go! I NEED to lose a minimum of 4 pounds a month...can't afford to lose any less than that.
It would be good to share ideas, encouragement and pats on the back here with y'all.
Here are my goals for the month...
- Drink 6 bottles of water a day for a total of 101.4 fl. oz.
- Eat 2 cups of veggies a day.
- Eat 2 pieces of fruit a day.
- Exercise 5 days a week for a total of 2000 calories and 150 minutes.
- Lose 7 pounds by the end of the month.

It's all good though, I'll see it again this week and then hopefully pass it right up. I had a goal to get to 235 by the end of the month but I don't think I'll see that number by Friday. It's cool to see the numbers go down! I love seeing the measurements go down too...so cool. Kinda addictive isn't it?

Hey there...*wave*
I use the search option for these kinds of questions because I know they've been asked a million times (slight exaggeration ) before. One of the threads my search came up with was this one. Molly gives a great answer and I'm sure you'll find it helpful. I put "food percentages" into the search box at the top of the page...oh and don't forget to click on "forum" before you do that.
I'm sure you'll find lots of helpful answers under that search...I did.
One thing you might consider using is the mypyramid website. It's full of very good information on what you need to eat to be your healthiest. |

The thing I hate the most about being overweight........ |
Jul 25 2008 16:15 (UTC) |
38 |
The worst thing for me is that I'm not happy this way. I can't do what I want to do because the weight is holding me back. I hate feeling self consious and the fact that I avoid peoples eyes when they first see me so I don't see their disapproval. Our society does NOT accept fat people...period. Even if they say they do...they really don't and that's apparent to me every time I turn around.
Ya know the sad fact is that even when I get to my goal weight some people will still say I'm fat. I remember when I was 150-160 pounds and my room mate at the time called me fat. Some people are just that way and that's on them, not me. So the bottom line is that I want to be happy with myself at a weight that I determine, not society. |

Vstar...I like snowmen too, a LOT better than santa clause. We keep our snowmen up from late fall to late spring. Some of them are so cute! Do you like snowbabies? Dept. 56 carries them...one of my favorites is this one. So adorable! Have fun with your projects!
Sorry to hear about your aunt di_p...so glad you were able to make some good memories before her passing. Will keep you and your family in prayer. |
