ha, its ok xxana, I'll weigh in today in your place. tomorrow's gonna be a busy morning so I'm doing mine today rather than risking forgetting.. that and, I'm stoked after the scale this morning... gotta love the way water weight flies right off during a jog or bike ride :D The numbers may be extremely lower than they should be at the moment, but it feels good sometimes :D Starting weight (on May 1st):171.8 Goal Weight (on Jul 3rd):155 (though I'd settle for 160) May 1: 171.8 May 8: 166.6 May 15: 164.4 May 21: 164.2 May 29: 162.4 June 5: 165.4 June 11: 159.6 June 19: June 26: July 3:---final weigh in |

the shop i hit is a bit of a chain.. but they're not the only ones that go out of their way to match your step to the shoe. their process is a little more over the top than some, but any running store should be able to help you out in that regard.
I'm sure there's something around. :D As for these guys, they may be too... you can check here:http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/content/c ontent.jsp?contentId=2600003&cm_sp=header -_-anchor-_-store_locator |

Congratulations! Its a day old necro, but hey, you've earned it.
Secondly, I gotta ask, how are you determining that 159 is a little underweight? I checked based on 5"10 and 158 and that's a bmi of 22.7. I'm 5'9 and 160.4, thinking around 145-150 is where I want to be... and with a low bodyfat% at that... could prolly be fine where I am if I had more of the right kind of bulk, but that's part of the process too right? :D |

what I love about cycling is the fact that I can go twice as far in the same amount of time that I would if i was jogging. The pace keeps me going with the exercise, cuts some of the monotony. You're going slow enough to see and enjoy what's around you, but fast enough that you're not staring at the same mailbox for 10 minutes. The office I work in makes it convenient for cyclists as well. bike racks and showers, its a good area for cyclists. There's something fun about conquering hills. I used to prefer flat rides, but these days, I take the more hilly routes because the change keeps it interesting. The climbs have gotten to be enjoyable, and there's nothing like whizzing down a hill at breakneck speeds. I also get a kick out of the days I ride both my motorcycle and bicycle. I get used to accelerating coming out of turns on the motorcycle and then start applying that to the bicycle and slamming the pedals into the ground. scares the heck out of me for a second, gets the adrenaline flowing and I get to chuckle at my foolishness for a few minutes. |

I got new trainers this weekend. I was having some issues trying to jog, I think I turned my ankle even. Decided that the shoes weren't helping and took my own advice. Went to an actual running store and they went through this crazy process to determine which kind of shoe works best for me... they basically had me walk across a pad with sensors to see which parts of the foot make the biggest impact, then put me on a treadmill barefoot and taped the process to breakdown what's happening with the way the foot lands and rolls... crazy... in either case, I ended up with a cool pair of shoes and new insoles... spent more than I wanted, but its been helping with the walking/running I think. Once my foot is fully operational again, I think I'm gonna be set. still a little soreness, but its working. Just thought I'd share. |

Original Post by tryin2lose25: Knees are a killer. Swimming and bicycling were the two that had the least impact that seem to help the most for them. Started lifting weights I think last July, I do a lot of walking typically too... as the weights come off and the muscles have grown a bit, I've actually slowly been able to start working in some jogging. Some days are good, others, I curse my knees. I managed a six mile jog on pavement without much pain today, so, I'm calling that a win.
If you want to walk and have knee issues, I'd recommend going to an actual running store and getting shoes there. It doesn't have to be an expensive pair, just a pair that's right for the way your foot hits the ground. As people place their foot down differently, different running shoes are designed to compensate for the variations and you want one that's not going to cause more pain than you'd expect normally. I hope that helps :D |

Original Post by eechie: you maintain your same deficit you've been doing and don't worry about it. 900 calories isn't a big deal, its like 1/4 lb. You're likely only noticing daily fluctuations. That 900 calories prolly had plenty of sodium and you're retaining. |

I agree with umneydurak, its all guestimation :D as second thought though... I'm not sure on this one, but I think garmin tracks elevation change too... which means maybe it adds more if you're climbing? who knows... |

take the road bike out. I'd guess 30 minutes at a good clip. An hour and a half (20 mi) usually nets me around 1k loss.
this site helps, I use it often: http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php
in fact, hit it for an hour and have a deficit! :D |

sedentary male, 27, 186.2 .. I went with my height (5'9): 2300 cal.
half hour brisk walk... at most I'd guess 2 mi, which is around 200 burn... After that's figured in with sedentary burn as your metabolism is working either way, it'd prolly be around 2400-2450 burn for the day.
Assuming that's all the exercise you're doing and you're measuring everything perfectly and getting exactly 2100 cals, deficit is only around 300-350.
Add in the potentially messed up metabolism in the beginning that you were fixing (that may or may not be fixed now).. there you have it.
While 350 at best should have a better result than what you had calculated your actual loss to be (approx 188 deficit), its still considerably less if you'd gotten 600 and easy to see how it could have happened. particularly when you realize that the burn rate is really still just a best guess. |

I say set it to sedentary and add in all exercise.
at your age and weight i think I was eating around 1800 calories and aiming for 2 lbs a week. What they call sedentary, light, and moderate are not necessarily the same as what I would. It was far easier for me just to log everything, I mean, you're already logging food, why not spend the extra five clicks to add in two short walks (or whatever your exercise really is).

I'd like to join. Its been a while since I've really paid attention to things, I'm just starting back today as I'm back up to 175. For the challenge, my goal will be to hit 165. I'd been maintaining between 165 and 170, but it got out of control recently, so a challenge is just what I need to get me back on path toward 155. |

it can work, but diet is far more important. can build those muscles all you want, but if there's flab there, its gotta come off from a calorie deficit. |
