Weight Loss How are you handling the time consuming nature of tracking your calories...? Apr 27 2008
00:29 (UTC)

It gets less time-consuming the longer you do it, because most people will repeat meals and ingredients after a few weeks.  One thing that saves time is drinking diet drinks, because they are 0 calories.  One less thing to enter!

I don't let the calorie counting take a lot of time.  Either it is a food where I can find out the calories (either from the package or looking it up on this site) or a food where I will have to estimate (such as when I eat at a buffet restaurant).  In that case, I will just say, ok I will estimate that I ate 1500, and not put much time into it, but make it high enough to be reasonable.  Be honest to yourself about the serving sizes you actually eat and keep track of everything.

If you want to get into a job fairly soon, and like talking to people, I would say real estate.  I think it is only ~30 hours of training, depending on the state, and then you need to pass a test for license.  Yes, it is not a great market now, but people are always buying houses no matter what.  And you would be all set when the market picks up.

If you have time for several years to take prereqs, I would say nursing.  This is a stable job and there is always a demand for nurses.

I used to be able to eat a whole can of chili with a hot dog cut up in it, but now that is wayyyyyy too much food to eat in one sitting.

As a kid, I loved Dinty Moore canned beef stew.  When I tried it years later, I was like, this is disgusting, what was I thinking?

Weight Loss Eating too little = no weight loss? Apr 25 2008

I eat less than 1200, sometimes even less than 1000, regularly.  I guess I am supposed to be dead.

That is plenty of calories for someone like me, a person who is 5 ft tall, ~100 lbs.  I am not on a diet, nor do I have an eating disorder.  I have calculated all my nutrients when I took a nutrition class and am eating plenty of protein, carb and fat for my weight, but I did find that I was low in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and a couple of other vitamins, so that is why I take a multivitamin daily now to make sure I have it all covered.  Eating under 1200 calories can be done as long as you have all your requirements met and take your weight into account.

If you really want to lose weight, make an effort.

A girl asked my boyfriend for weight-loss advice recently (he had lost a lot of weight the past few months).  He suggested that she cut down on calories; she said she didn't want to change how much she ate.  He said add some exercise to your routine; she said she didn't like exercise.  He said exchange some of your meals for a low-calorie salad; she said she doesn't like salad.  Well??  I guess she thinks she can wish those pounds away.

I think it is too late for the Democrats.  They should have decided on one candidate by now.  When it finally gets decided, the side that loses will be disgruntled and will probably not be motivated to turn out for the November vote.

Flying car.  But we need to have nuclear-powered engines first.

A pill or genetic modification that can increase breast size (nonsurgical).  I think the tricky part here would be something that doesn't cause massive cancer (from the quickly growing tissue).

A replacement for toilet paper.  Don't you think it is pretty primitive that we still use wads of paper to wipe our butts?  There's got to be some kind of device or machine that can modernize this.

Instant showers.  For when you are in a hurry.  Also instant hair dryers.

Holodecks.

I would also say a method of time travel but I don't think it is possible.

Weight Loss Starvation Mode Rant Apr 07 2008

As to your original point, I agree, "starvation mode" is way way overused in this forum.  It seems to be the answer to everything and is stated as unassailable fact.  I would love to know where the term came from and also that 1200 calories that is always floating around (i.e. a scientific article and not a link to a random website).

My advice would be to take it by species.  I am trying to do the same thing and have cut out lamb, frog, all miscellaneous meats that I don't eat too often, because these are the easiest to quit.  Then I quit pork, which was harder because I do like bacon and ribs, but I don't eat too often, so I don't think I will miss too much.  Then I quit chicken, when I realized I don't even like the taste of chicken - I was just eating it because it is a convenient meat.  I found that Quorn replaces chicken sufficiently for me, in taste and texture, for when I want a dish like chicken parmegiana or chicken nuggets.  Next to quit is beef, but this will be a tough one!

I am into indian food and middle eastern food lately, so I have really been making curry dishes lately, trying out falafel, using garbanzo beans and kidney beans in salads, etc.  I would recommend that you cook most of your meals since that is the best way to control what you are eating.

Weight Loss 2700 Calories? Apr 05 2008

2700 sounds like what a pro athlete would eat. Did you set your activity really high or something (do you play a sport)?  I don't think anyone should force themselves to eat more just because of the number that CC gives you.  Eat until full and if that is short of 2700, then that's fine.

Vegetarian Fish Eating "Vegetarians" Apr 04 2008

The only meats I eat are seafood and beef (but eventually I want to cut the beef to 0).  As a lifelong meat-eater this is a process for me and it won't happen overnight.  The reason I am cutting out beef, lamb, chicken, etc. is because of factory farming practices and because I feel mammals are closest to humans and I feel bad eating something with almost as much intelligence and awareness as humans.  To me, eating pigs are the worst because they are the most intelligent.  I am not judging anyone else who does still eat these meats.  I just can't do it anymore.  I think there is less cruelty involved in fishing, and seafood is the furthest meat from humans.  I realize they do feel pain, as I can't imagine dying of suffocation is painless, but what is done to chicken, cows, pigs, etc. seems so much worse.

Vegetarian The smell of meat...good or bad? Apr 04 2008
04:26 (UTC)

I am not 100% vegetarian yet but I have quit chicken.  I can't deal with the smell of a plain chicken breast being cooked on a skillet.  I used to be very indifferent and even liked chicken but something about the smell really bothers me now.  Other meats still smell really good, especially bacon (I have quit pork too).
