Fitness I have mono - any stories? Aug 18 2009
15:00 (UTC)

I had a really really sore throat for a few days, strep test was negative, and the doc eventually tested for mono...low and behold, positive for mono!

I had regular energy levels, worked out as per normal, sore throat went away, but still had mono. It stays in your system for approx a year until it's fully, fully, fully gone.

Or if you want, I've heard of some people bringing their own popcorn from home (airpopped) in ziplocs to the theatres. With the huge purses that everyone has these days, it should fit right in there!

Personally, I indulge in buttered popcorn at the movies since I'm careful most days and only go to the movies every once in a while.

Health & Support do i have PCOS Jul 13 2009

You could have PCOS and have all or none of the traditional symptoms, it's such a broad syndrome.

I was diagnosed with it after an internal scope was done of my ovaries.

I do Bikram's hot yoga classes (90 minutes) 5 days a week, and cardio/strength training at the gym several days, so total 11-12 hours of exercise each week. I feel healthy, not "addicted".

Fitness Hypermobility and Weight Lifting May 20 2009

I had the same problems since I was a kid, and a few years ago was diagnosed with Ehler's Danlos Syndrome type III (hypermobility). Might be worth looking into for you as well.

I saw a kinesiologist for 8 weeks who designed a routine of various strength training moves. She straight up told me which machines to avoid and which exercises to steer clear from for risk of dislocating, subluxing, or injuring myself.

Everyone's different, so what I should avoid probably won't be the same as for you. Basically, if the machine says it works xyz mucles, but you feel it only in 1 muscle or one that isn't listed, you're probably hyperextending and utilizing an incorrect muscle and will probably get hurt or at least hinder your fitness progress.

"Hypermobility type
(formerly type III)

Joint hypermobility is the major manifestation of this form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Any joint can be affected, and dislocations are frequent. This type is also inherited as an autosomal dominant genetic trait."

Original Post by jblarghp:

I definitely feel that scientific fact and logic should be a priority over what (I feel ) is more of a myth. This is why I think that the theory of evolution should be taken more seriously, intelligence shouldn't be hindered because of religion (that's one of my pet peeves!). I think people's religions should evolve with the times and take into consideration new knowledge that we have obtained.

I'm about logic and proof. If something has absolutely no proof to back it up, and something else has over 200 years of proof to back it up, I'm going to at least lean towards the second.

You do know that the composition of most of the universe is unknown, right? Only 5% of the universe is constituted as matter, and understood by scientists and astronomers alike. 95% of the universe is deemed dark matter and dark energy. Even if 100% of that 5% of the universe is understood as scientifically resolute, that still leaves 95% of the universe to consider.

You say that you believe what can be proved, but why put all your faith in the minority of a proven 5%, when there's 95% unable to be explained and defined further than 'definitely something, but no one knows what'.

To base your beliefs regarding not only religion, but science as well, on an understanding of only 5% of the universe is just about the most illogical and unscientific approach possible.

Foods Mexican Food advice Nov 26 2008
03:41 (UTC)

I've been living in Mexico for the past 3 months, here are some tips that I've found diet-friendly!

  • Skip the rice and the potato side dishes. Often rice is in the soups, so I cook/order it without the rice.
  • Make sure to balance your meals with vegetables/fruit. Everywhere I go here, all the foods are cooked. The only times I get to eat fresh fruits and veggies are when I buy them from the grocery store myself. Good luck finding a healthy salad here!
  • Stay away from breads since you'll be enjoying tortillas. Often the guys here have 'tortas' which are like a sandwich on thick bread. Ill have fresh fruit and bran cereal instead.
  • Order corn tortillas rather than flour. They don't taste the same, flour ones taste much better in my opinion, but they're the anti-diet food! Corn tortillas taste healthier and do the trick. Try blue corn tortillas if you can find them! Yum!
  • Eat small portions of the main dish. If you feel like 3 tacos, order 2. And pile on the salsas, lettuce, onions, chiles, etc.
  • Speaking of chiles: Build up your ability to eat more of them! Eat serrano chiles with meals (yes, raw. Between bites of your meal.) They're spicy, but when you eat them with your food it lessens the sting. Chiles raise your metabolism, and make you burn more calories due to the heat. Not to mention they prevent certain types of cancers, and have great antioxidants. Google 'chiles' and read up more on the spicy peppers!

Good luck! Message me if you have more questions :)

Same with me! It's been 9 months since 'she' last visited. I too have a BMI of less than 20, but am not considerably underweight.

My doctor ordered blood tests (resulted in nothing abnormal), and then a scope of my ovaries (again, resulted in nothing abnormal).

Hope you have better luck in finding the problem than me!

Health & Support Appetite is nonexistent/metabolism issue Nov 18 2008
03:24 (UTC)

It's not possible for your metabolic rate to completely stop (unless you're dead!), so don't worry about that. It is however possible, and likely, that because of undereating you have slowed down your rate of metabolism.

Speed it up by:

  • Drinking ice cold water
  • Eating small meals every 2-3 hours (eat mechanically on schedule, despite your appetite)
  • HI-IT (High intensity interval training. Google it!)

Original Post by susiecue:

The jumbo size ones might.  I like the Hershey's Special Dark Bars - which, if I recall correctly, are about 250 cals each.   I split it into four servings of three squares each so that each time I have chocolate, I'm only having about 60 cals worth.

Mmm! Yes, they're 180 calories per bar...so good paired with a nice red cabernet. Although I find it doesn't taste like chocolate very much...
