| Foods | Low Sodium Diet | Jun 09 2009 01:28 (UTC) |

I live on a low sodium diet. Like Oreo, I eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. The more I have concentrated on these, the more I enjoy them. Salt enhances flavor in one way by irritating or opening your palette, making it more sensitive. If we are used to it, we feel like we need it to keep food from tasting bland. Restaurant food and packaged foods use it to increase the flavor they want from herbs. salt is cheaper than herbs and people have come to confuse it with flavor. I use more herbs and less salt. I also use cayenne to open my palette. If you are discrete, you can add a tiny amount that is not hot and essentially without noticeable flavor. I've lost 80 lbs. since Oct. 07 and feel great. |

I eat lots of egg whites. One thing I like to do is add a little dijon mustard and they taste deviled. eat them on cucumber slices. Another is to make a stir. Chop and Nuke onions and mushrooms until they soften and then saute 'til they caramelize. Stir in 4 egg whites. Add a little of your favorite strongest cheese. Iit's good to buy stroong cheese to cook with. It takes less. Top with salsa fresca. |

| Weight Loss | I'm tired of the ignorant comments | Oct 07 2008 15:09 (UTC) |

I've lost over 70 lbs. and people don't try to tell me how to lose weight. Everybody had advice when I was heavy. I think that when you're ready, you just do it. If somewhat who is obviously overweight is trying to coach you, I'd just kind of acknowledge their need for comment and give them a little look over, toe to head. |

I know how you feel. I'm 6 lbs. away and am bouncing around 175. I just don't get my exercise in every day. Otherwise, I'm diligent. Except that I find myself trying foods that I didn't eat while losing all the weight. I also find that some of them are detrimental to my goals. (Who'd have guessed?) I guess you have to get super aggressive now instead of feeling satisfied with the success now that you're almost what you want and can now start behaving like everybody you run around with. Not so. I believe you have to remember that I must continue my lifestyle change in every way. Doing it is the test. |

A person builds bulk muscle by lifting more weight. Heavy weights, I'm told, produce shorter muscle creating a bulky appearance. The secret to adding muscle within a lean profile is to develop long muscles. You apparently get this by working with lighter weights and more reps ("Long tall drink of water"). Observe laborers who work all day intensely moving medium weight. They are lean. Observe laborers that lift heavy objects all day. These people are bulky. Interior linemen are massive. Wide receivers are lean. Long distance runners are lean. Sprinters are very muscular. Emphasis on endurance will make you lean. |

Add cayenne pepper a pinch at a time. It opens the palette like salt but has no sodium. My mother taught me this trick. She even used it in sweets and you couldn't taste it. The dishes just have more flavor. Another bonus is thaat cayenne is said to decrease hunger. Cumin would also seem to be an appropriate spice for this mix. Minced onion and celery each in the same volume as the carrots. This is called the "holy trinity" in both French and Italian cuisine. I saute these three together in quantity and freeze portions in zip snack bags. |

One of the great benefits of cayenne pepper is that it opens the palate and makes any food more flavorful, a super substitute for salt or sugar. It can be added with no noticeable change in flavor (usejust a pinch in almost anything you're cooking). Try it. You'll be surprised. |

I have followed the theory that you won't eat many that are not healthy if you have no unhealthy foods to eat in the house. If you have your refridgerator and pantry stocked with delicious nutricious food, that's what you will eat. A sopping list of staples amd spices might be a good place to start. You still have to control your portions but, for me, its easier with the right food. |

| Health & Support | Help! Sciatica. | May 26 2008 21:43 (UTC) |
|
Hi: I have sciatica. I learned a stretch years ago and try to do it at least once a day. If I don't do it for a while, the sciatica pain returns. It seems to be related to tension in my hamstrings. My trainer has a master's degree in physiology and agrees with me. I stand with my feet together, legs straight, bend from the waist and let the weight of my upper body go toward my feet. I don't force my upper body to bend any further than my weight takes me. I then bend one knee shifting the weight to the other foot and stay for 20 or 30 seconds, switch legs and repeat. I feel a real good stretch in my hamstrings. Works for me. Regards, C. H. |

If she is truly zealous about losing weight, ask her to look at this site. She will probably be more receptive to expert advice than yours. In addition, there are many people here just like her and they are getting positive results following the advice of the program. I'm 66 yrs. old and it's been great for me. I eat a lot (of the right stuff) and am loosing weight. |

I ask your doctor what he means by "don't exercise". You may be able to get some excercise just by taking it easy. I've had open heart surgery and five stints. I just take it easy, doing light stuff for longer periods. Talk it over with him. |

Microwave for three minutes on high Mix 4 oz. nonfat yogurt and two packages of sweetener. Pour over apple and sprinkle with grapenuts. Tastes a lot like Dutch apple pie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| Fitness | Questions about treadmill workout, please help! | May 15 2008 01:22 (UTC) |
4 |
Hi: It is my understanding that the best results from a treadmill really relate to your heart rate. It sounds like you have a machine that has all the bells and whistles. If you maintain a heart rate of 115 to 120 BPM, you will raise your metabolism rate over time. It is your metabolism rate that determines how your body burns energy, not only while you exercise but during the entire day. Regular exercise will increase your metabolism. If you excercise at too high a heart rate, you will be anarobic and begin to and your body will try to store fat and burn carbs. Check with a trainer wo clarify the correct heart rate for you to exercise. |

When you get hungry at the wrong time, try a large glass of water. Wait 20 minutes and you may not be hungry. Also an apple does wonders for me, filling and delicious. Also, I eat when I'm bored. Another thing you can try is taking a walk. Solves three problems, hunger, boredom and excercise. |

| The Lounge | at what age did you begin to feel old? | May 06 2008 03:04 (UTC) |

I'm 66 & I have a hard time remembering it. I still think I'm young and atheletic until I try to run. My knees and back are shot. I was recently in Africa on a photo safari and I had trouble getting in and out of the open vehicle & really felt old. I took it as a sign to work on getting into as good a condition as I could. I've lost about 45 lbs. and have 20 more to go. I now work out 5 or 6 days a week. I'm feeling a lot better. Are there some other people about my age around? I'd like to hear from you. |

I live in Orange County and I can tell you I am honestly sick of plastic surgery. Yhere is nothing more appealing than a natural woman; no breast enlargement, no botox, nothing. People no they're not real and they are usually not proportionate to the rest of their bodies. It's not pretty. It's doesn't ad social status. It will not age well and is the beginning of a downward spiral. |
