Pregnancy & Parenting how hard is it to lose the baby weight when it's your second? Nov 10 2008
20:48 (UTC)

I gained well over 40 lbs for all three of my kids and I lost it all within the year after they were born.    I breastfed which I think really helped me, and I ate really healthy and tried to exercise.  I have a hard time not eating when I'm pregnant because I'm so hungry, but afterwards when I have a goal and I see results, I seem to just stick with it, and it's worked!

I'm actually pregnant again with number 4 and I'm older now too - 35, but I have no doubt that I'll lose the weight again,  even if it takes sheer will-power, but the weight WILL come off!!!  Cool

Time to get some resistance bands!  And I've seen desk work-outs with them on youtube.   My mil gave me some bands a while back and they've been fabulous because I can do it easily at home and they don't take up much space.   And I've noticed  a HUGE improvement in muscle tone with them.  So they are perfect for when you can't make it to the gym.

Weight Loss This should make us all feel a little better! Jul 11 2008

Well I totally agree!  I've lost 7  pounds since April, but I have found that I only lose weight on the weeks that I log.  When I don't log, I don't lose, it's pretty straight-forward for me!

You look great to me!  I'm 5'9" too and I've gained back some of the weight I lost after having number 3,  but my goal at the moment is 155!!!    I guess I have a higher goal because it know that if I tried to go down to 145 it would be work work work constantly and I just want a weight where I look good, feel toned and can easily maintain forever.

So maybe your body is just trying to find it's level - I agree with the others - stay off your scale!

Weight Loss Has anyone tried to eliminate a food during weight-loss? Jun 14 2008

Thanks everyone.  I think maybe I'll start out saying 'no chips' for a week or so and see how that goes.  If I find that I'm dreaming or obsessing about them, which I doubt,  I'll allow myself the occasional treat.

In a way, it will kinda be a goal for when I do lose the weight - so we'll see!

Pregnancy & Parenting Autism and Immunizations Jun 14 2008

I also read a really interesting article about a woman who had a son with autism,  but she wasn't married and the child had been fathered by a sperm bank donor.    Well it turns out that there are other children who were fathered by this same donor who also have autism.

I thought at this point that people were starting to focus more on genetics and other influences rather than immunizations.

Weight Loss Any Post-Baby Moms out there? Jun 12 2008

I hear you, because I'm getting really frusterated with my belly!!!   I have three kids and my youngest is 16 months old and I feel like I have lost all stomach muscle tone forever!!!    My tummy is still so flabby - if I suck it in, it's about 2 inches smaller so I know that it's not all fat.. although I still need to lose 5 lbs.. but I'm sure it will come off of everywhere but there!!!

I've been trying the tupler technique from the 'Lose your Mummy Tummy' girl - I've been using resitance bands, and doing pilates for my abs and honestly it doesn't feel like any of it is working!!!

So... if anyone finds a miracle cure (without involving surgery) please let me know!!! Laughing

Good thing my kids were worth it.

The Lounge A question for all you Moms out there Jun 03 2008

I am a stay-at-home mom and I love it.   I didn't have kids until I had been married almost five years and had worked full-time until then.  After my first I went back part-time and I HATED being away from my son.  When I had my second son I knew I couldn't go back and so I quit.

Financially it wasn't that tough on us because I worked for a non-profit organization and wasn't making that much anyway.  But I think that people don't realize just how much money you actually save by having a spouse at home.  You eat out less, you don't pay for child-care,  you don't need 'work' clothes, you can make more things for your children as opposed to buying things and you might not even need two vehicles.

Another huge thing for us is that we have way less stress!  My husband has work stress of course, but then he can come home and because I'm here and taking care of things, it can be his retreat.  I can't imagine if we were both tired and grumpy at the end of the day from working,  and then still had to face cleaning/cooking/child-care and laundry - because unless you are paying to have this stuff done while you are working, guess who gets to do it evenings and weekends!  And my husband is NOT domestic so I basically would be doing it all myself.. not fun.

I guess my point is, is that there is a TON of work involved in running a house and children need a TON of attention and unless you want to be running running running 24/7,  or using your paycheque to pay for childcare and cleaning etc, it can actually make more sense financially to have someone at home.

I hope this helps!

Weight Loss New mom, I want to lose 30 lbs. Anyone wants to join me? May 26 2008

Are you breastfeeding?    Because that helped me lose all my baby weight all three times.  For my first I gained 58 lbs and I ended up losing about 65 by the time he was a year... but I KNOW that breastfeeding doesn't work for everyone else that way.    But it does take about 500 extra calories a day to produce enough milk so just make sure if you nursing that you counting that in!

Foods How do you make granola bars sticky? May 19 2008

I have a great recipe for granola bars...  I used to make it with sweetened condensed milk which made them sweet and sticky, but now I make them with just date puree - and I don't have to add any other sugar either.    They are a little softer than when using the sweetened condensed milk, they are actually more like a granola chew.

3 cups oatmeal
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup shredded coconut
1/2 cups sunflower seeds
1/4 cup ground flax
1 cup raisins
1 1/2 cups date puree - to make the puree I just boil dates in water until they are soft and then blend them till smooth in the blender

And then press them into a cookie sheet and bake at 325 for 25 minutes.  You can add or remove whatever you like, I also add pumpkin seeds, use apricot puree sometimes instead, you can nuts, or chocolate chips or whatever!

Weight Loss Stretch Marks May 16 2008

Oh man, I have a ton of stretch marks on my stomach from being pregnant with my first back in 2003.  They are almost all faded now, so I guess it takes a couple of years for them to really fade, and I have used a ton of cocoa butter so maybe that has helped, but I don't know for sure!

Blondin1 - does CC tell you an ideal weight for your height?  I don't think I've seen that.

I guess I chose 155 because I can't remember being slimmer than that before kids - I know when I got pregnant with my first son after a miscarriage I weighted 165 and that was the heaviest I ever remembered being.   And I just want a weight that is easy for me to maintain, where I still feel good and look slim.   And thankfully my husband doesn't want me super thin either - which is awesome.

And I too want to get tonned up - I've been using resitance bands at home for about 30 min 3 times a week and it's totally helped me lose the weight and I'm noticing new muscle definition already - it rocks!

Pregnancy & Parenting My daughter, the picky one... May 14 2008

And you know what,  I've never heard of a healthy normal child starving themselves, but I have heard that until the age of 5 a child will naturally stop eating when they are full.... but I have three kids and I'm not sure I quite believe that one.

My kids aren't picky eaters thankfully, but I have always allowed them to always have 2 options at dinner time, eat or not eat.  Meaning, they can eat what we are having for dinner, or they can choose to go without.   And I guess it must be working!  Sometimes they just aren't hungry and don't eat much and sometime when my middle son was 2 and decided he didn't like what we were having he didn't eat, but he never complained he was hungry - but ate like a horse in the morning.

So I would just do what you are doing, offer healthy choices and if she doesn't eat, maybe she's just not hungry!!

Weight Loss How do I get rid of the thigh fat? My thinghs have always touched :( :( May 14 2008

I think that thighs touching is really about how you are built - I'm 5'9" and when I'm standing with my feet and knees together, my thighs don't touch, but I'm  not super skinny - I"m 161 lbs... it's just how I've always been - it's just how I'm built!!

Foods Eating until full.... May 09 2008

Thanks everyone!   I will definitly try to eat slower and drink more water with my meal.   I have small kids so I tend to cook quite a bit for a meal, so even though I initially serve myself the correct portion, it's oh so easy to pop up for seconds!  And I know it's there which does NOT help.

And we do all eat together at the table every night, but sometime it is the first time I really have sat down and relaxed all day and so it's almost like a reward, does that make sense?

I would get some resistance bands...  my mother-in-law got me a set from SPRI and I love them and it's easy to do a full-body work-out in 30 minutes.   Plus they are small and easy to store.

Motivation What to do after a 4000 calorie binge? Apr 10 2008
19:55 (UTC)

You know what, everyone needs a day off from something at some time.  I just started reducing calories and I've been dutifully recording everything I've been eating and being so good, but in saying that I've decided that I'm not going to record my calories every Sunday, I'm going to give myself that day off every week.    Now that doesn't give me the licence to binge, but after being so careful about what I'm eating all week, I know that for one day a week I'm going to need a day where I'm not worried about it or thinking about it.

So maybe, and this is just a thought, but maybe binging was your reaction to being too restrictive with what you are eating normally.  And maybe you too could use a day off once in a while!

Weight Gain ugh...don't even get near my calorie goal of 1200 daily...any suggestions? (sort of venting, but really need help and support) Apr 08 2008

Oh - I'm so sorry you are going through this!   And I haven't been in the same place, just wanted to offer my support and say that it sounds like you are really trying!  You will get there!   And what's so nice about this web site is that you can easily search and find out how many calories are in things.

Do you like to bake or cook?  How about making your own healthy blueberry muffins or granola bars, something easy to grab that is healthy but also yummy and has the calories that you need?
