Is anyone planning on continuing to diet through out the thanksgiving holiday?  I am and all my friends think i'm insane.

Perhaps they are saying that because you are presenting it as a "diet", rather than a change in your lifestyle.

Weight Loss hello my friends: Thanksgiving is coming up. What you can do is to eat 20 oz. of baked turkey with green vegetables Oct 07 2009

I don't care for turkey at all, so I can spend my calories on some of the other goodies.  Sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, and my cousins homemade rolls!!  That will be MY splurge.  No deserts for me - these things are enough of a treat, I'll have no desire for anything else.  I never have a problem at Thanksgiving since my family learned to stop egging me on to eat more - that was half the darn battle!! pffffffffft

*hands OP a snickers*

i take off every 3rd or 4th weekend and eat and drink to my hearts content. i am not a binger or an emotional eater and i dont keep junk food in the house. i eat really clean and lean every day so on my weekends off i have whatever i want. it keeps me sane.

beer. ice cream. beer. a meal out. whiskey. chocolate. beer. you get the idea. i probably eat anywhere between 1000 and 1500 over maintenance. meh. its a must for me.

enjoy that snickers. :)

Hello watergirl: Well, if you overeat 1000 to 1200 extra-calories over your diet regimen, you still don't binge.  A binge-eating meal is not 1000 or 1500 extra calories over what we eat on our diets.  A binge represents about 5000 to 12,000 extra calories (REAL DANGER AND DAMAGE !!).  so dont worry, what you do when u have 1000 extra calories is a controlled-cheating, not a binge.  So you are still safe.  In fact 1000 extra calories doesn't even make you gain 1 lb.  In order to gain 1 extra pound, you gotta eat 3000 extra calories.

Good luck with your diet program

Actually the number is 3500. But high sodium and carbs I guarantee will show up on that scale, even in just a day.  It's an annoying thing, how our body responds with weight gains on the scale, when we KNOW we've not eaten an extra 3500 calories, but there it is.   You can freak out over every little fluctuation, or just be hard-line about it and not deviate from your eating plan.  I think successes are possible both ways.

Whoah.  I've never had a machine show a LOWER number than my HRM - ever.  It's always a higher number.  I'd make sure that I had all my stats entered correctly in the HRM - that doesn't sound right.  What was the exercise?  How long, and what intensity?

This is why they should never be trusted - I've never had that didn't give a lower  number.  Because we are all different ages, weights, height and sex all our burns are going to vary machine to machine and even day to day.  If you have a HRM use its burn

Yes, I agree the machines are ALWAYS off.  (I never use those numbers.) But since MOST people do show an (incorrect) higher number on them, I was questioning her setup on her HRM.

A Zone Perfect bar has 210 cal, 7g fat, 3 gms fiber, 24 g carbs, and 14 gms of protein.  These are delicious bars - I love them, and they are FAR healthier than a Snickers.

A 2oz Snickers has 266 cal, 11 gms fat, 1 gm fiber, 37 g carbs, and 5 gms protein.

All this shows is that the two bars have different macro-nutrient breakdowns, this doesn't do anything to demonstrate that one is 'healthier' than the other.

Well, if you aren't concerned about your FAT intake, or your PROTEIN intake, or your FIBER intake, then sure...they're not too far off.   Perhaps your definition of "health" is different than mine.

Avocado: 277 calories, 25 grams of fat, 15 carbs, 3.5 protein.  Since I'm concerned with my fat and protein intake it looks like a Snickers bar is 'healthier' than an avocado. right?

Do you really not know enough to look at the entire nutrional content?  Really?  Surely you know better that that.  The three that I posted were obvious ones for the comparison with bars.  An avocado has 227 calories ( Nutrition Data), 21 gms of fat, but only 3 saturated - it's well known (to most of us anyway) that avocados have GOOD fat. Also, it has 9 gms of fiber, 0 chloresterol, and only 12 carbs., plus 3 gms protein. Not to mention the vitamins.  I think it's safe to say the avocado is a better bet. Wink

Some carrots and hummus is a good snack. A whole grain PB sandwhich is a good snack. Even a small piece of real dark chocolate is a good snack. A snickers, with 28 grams of sugar, 14 grams of fat, and almost no nutritional value....not so much.

Exactly.

An active teenager could easily eat and maintain on 3000 calories a day.

As I recall Fitmom4life is the one who gloats about eating less than 1200 calories a day... so I wouldn't worry about anything said above.

Try the 2000 calories/day with the 30 min exercise a day and you'll probably drop the pant size.

As you get older though, you'll need less calories.  :(

Pardon me?  WTF would I gloat about what I eat?

Good grief people.  The girl SAID she NEVER exercises.  She NEVER counts calories.  I don't care what age she is, if she has been eating 3000 calories a day (and how would she know, hmmm?), routinely, for a long period of time, she'd be gaining weight, NOT maintaining at 140 pounds for a 5'7" female.  Use your head.

Frankly, I smell a troll.

Nothing rude intended, dear.  But I guarantee that she is guessing on that calorie number, 18 or not.  I know what my 16 year old son eats, and what he does in a day.  I am VERY familiar with teenage metabolism.

I don't mean this to be insulting...

You're going to base all teenage metabolism/calorie needs off of just your son?...

That's a huge generalization

And where did I state that I am basing ALL teenage metabolism/calorie needs off my son?  Just used him as one example of my experience.

So I have this one pair of jeans. They're super cute, but I bought them without trying them on and they've always been a bit tight. Today I decided I wanted to wear them and, much to my delight, they feel looser! I'm pretty sure I havne't dropped a size yet, but after three weeks of eating better and running daily, it's a nice motivation =)

Isn't that fun when that happens?  I love having to throw my jeans into the dryer on HIGH just so they'll fit!!  Wink

afterwards i couldn't feel my mouth i had awful dentist tastes in my mouth and just did not feel like eating and fell right to sleep. When I woke up in the late afternoon, I was dying from hunger! so i quickly hit up a drive through, and ate about 1000 calories in 15 minutes.

then later had a glass of milk  and a pb&j and a vegetable juice

hopefully tomorrow i'll get back to normal

So you had about 1600-1700 calories today.  What's the problem?

I don't count calories .. at all so I'd say I easily eat 3000+ plus a day. I guess I'm not blowing up like a baloon because I'm 18, I don't know.

I'm a 28 in jeans but I want to get down to a 26, so just lose a couple inches.

I made myself a 2000 calorie meal plan with a half hour of cardio every day and some core excersises. I never count calories and I never excersise so I'm expecting results from this.

Then I go on this board for fitness & food tips and everyone's eating between 1200 - 1500 calories a day AND excersising?

WTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HOW CAN PEOPLE DO THAT?
I feel like I'm over eating but eating 2000 cals a day but that should be fine shouldn't it? You confuse me CC. >.<

You eat 3000 calories a day, and you are 5'7", and you weigh 140?

Yeah...I believe that. Sealed

I've been on a 1200 calorie a day diet. I want to maintain this and not go over 1200 for the day but can I have a snickers bar in place of healthy food? If I eat a snickers bar and still only consume 1200 calories (candy included) will it make a difference? My main question is- does it matter if I eat 1200 calories of junk food as long as I dont go over.

Have you read ANYTHING about nutriton, at ALL??  Ever?  Yeesh.  Yeah...you'll certainly survive on 1200 cal of chocolate a day. Sure you will.  But after a few days, I sure wouldn't want to be you.  You will feel like pure ****.  Your body needs a balance of nutrients, and junk food will not provide that.

There is nothing junky about a Snickers Bar.  It is a good snack and comparable to many of the more expensive "protein bars" that you find in the health food aisle.

WHAT?  I don't know what kind of protein bars you are eating, but a Snickers is a far cry from most of them.  A "good snack" it is NOT.

The most filling protein bar that I eat is a Kashi GOLean Chewy. The Chocolate Almond Toffee one is 2.75 oz (it's too much for me to eat at once - I eat half at a time!) has 290 cal, 6 gms fat, 6 gms fiber, 45 g carbs, and 13 gms protein.

I'm not saying you can't eat a Snickers bar.  But don't call it "a good snack".  It isn't.  You can do much better in a bar.

Weight Loss 500 calorie a day diet....what Dr would say to do this? Sep 30 2009

Original Post by j9gwen:

A friend of mine went to the Dr about four weeks ago and asked to be put on a diet because she wants to have a baby.  She's 5'5" and 220 pounds.  The Dr apparently told her she needs to have 500 calories a day no more no less and B 12 shots.  Personally I think her "Dr" is a quack and I've tried to explain what I've learned through this site to her but she's not buying it.  She's already lost 20 pounds and is dead set on losing 20 pounds a month now.  I'm pretty much waiting for her to crash and burn then call me crying that she ate a whole pizza....I'm not sure if I can do anything to change her mind or if I just have to wait for the downfall because I'm 100% sure there will be one.  Any advice smart people of CC?

For the morbidly obese, such drastic cuts are not uncommon.  Such people are placed on severely restrictive diets only as a last resort, and always under a doctor's care.  If the doctor is reputable, I'd leave things to her and the doctor.  But you might want to check his credentials....just to be sure she's not contacted some wacko.

Wow.  That's not very encouraging.  When I walk, it's usually 1-3 miles.  I don't see how I could ever find time to walk an hour every day.

I don't mean to be discouraging, sorry to come across that way.  But if you are serious about losing, you have to realize that it all comes down to burning more than you consume.  It's very very easy to consume 300-400 calories in what most people would consider a "snack".  To burn off that little snack, requires 3-4 miles of walking.  So, you have to choose what will work best for you.  Either eat less, or exercise more - a lot more.  It really does come down to that.

Other that that one day, and the day we went to a friend's house for dinner, I have stuck pretty close to my calorie goal.  I also have been walking, usually 3-4 times a week.

Any ideas or suggestions about how to break this early-occurring weight loss plateau?  Has anyone else experienced/overcome this?

Well you have a whole recipe for failure there.  You really aren't sticking to your goal, and I can't tell if you are really doing any serious exercise.  How far are  you walking?  You walk a mile, you burn about 100 calories - that's all. So if you are walking 5 miles a day, that would be great.  One mile, not so great.

I would advise doing an hour of brisk walking, EVERY day.  And start journaling your calories to ensure you STICK to your calorie goal.  No cheating...it's too easy to jump off the wagon. Wink

Hey,

I was just reading an article on how 80% women in America 'underreport' the amount of calories they are eating by up to 300 calories per day (IMAGINE THAT!!).

Actually the "underreporting" is closer to a THIRD of the daily calorie total.  If someone else was watching over our shoulder, and measuring and writing, you can pretty much be certain that most of us would fail miserably in our estimation of total calories consumed. Wink

Weight Loss Could I really have gained 5 lbs in 2 weeks?! Sep 29 2009
21:24 (UTC)

Everyone always wants the math to be so exact...so, predictable...Smile, unfortunately it isn't.  There are so many variables - sodium intake, water weight, bowel movements, etc.  You probably can attribute some of the 5 pound to something other than fat gain, so don't stress too much over it.

If you were eating too little (as the above poster suggested) you can rest assured you'd not be GAINING weight. That defies pretty much everthing we know about weight gain/loss.  :-)

Your question made me smile.  People have gained 15 pound in a one-week cruise, so 5 pounds in a week, is nothing, and yes, VERY easy to do.  Just get back on track...5 pounds is better than 10, or more!

You are right! I do go "mad" when I weight myself daily. It is kind of like an addiction. Sometimes I wish my boyfriend would just hide the scale from me. I did pretty good in Vegas though. I didn't really gain anything, and I ate freely. I am sure all that walking did me good.

I have another question. I was told to stop lifting weights in order to loose weight. Is this correct? My typical workout is like this: 30 mins of treadmill or elliptical, then 30 mins of moderate to vigourous weights (either upper, lower, or abs), and last 30 mins of stairmaster. I am thinking of trying to cut out weights for a month and do 1 to 1 1/2 hours of only cardio. Does anyone of any advice?

First of all, it's LOSE, not "loose".   (Sorry - that's a pet peeve of mine. Smile)

As far as stopping lifting in order to lose weight, huh?  Unless you are a serious bodybuilder, your lifting is not going to seriously affect your weight.  Besides, why the heck would you want to NOT have muscle?  You want to lose FAT, not MUSCLE, right?  When your body burns fat by having a calorie deficit, there is also a corresponding loss of muscle tissue.  You have to counteract that by doing strength training.  So, no.  Do NOT stop.  Whoever told you that is an idiot.
