I live in the Philadelphia area, and Cheesesteaks are my weakness. With a whopping 1000 calories per steak... add a beer or two and a large cheese fries and... ugh. Oh, and of course right next to the local watering hole there was a cheesesteak place that was open for an hour after the bar closes... a night of drinking washed down with a huge greasy cheesesteak - I cant even think about that now without being grossed out.

Now, If I must have one, I order a small and immediatly wrap up half of it and put it aside, or try to share it with someone.  And definitely not on nights that I have been drinking.

 i heart philly cheesesteak!!!!!

I learned that frozen vegetables are usually cheaper than fresh.

And the general consensus is that when heated in very little water, frozen vegetables are as nutricious as fresh.

Also, don't buy a bag of salad, but a head of lettuce, I had a head Romain lettuce for $1.40 and it lasted 3 meals.

I also bake my own bread in a $45 bread machine, the cost of a home baked whole wheat bread is about $0.30.

I do understand your feelings, Vickie, we too have lived on a really tight budget for a long time. It probably also helps to take a closer look at your finances, even if you pay off just one credit card, you will save the minimum payments of that card every following month. If you could ease the financial stress a little bit, you will feel so much better about yourself.

In case you wonder: My wife and I maintain a budget of $80 per week for groceries. And we eat healthful food from that budget. If you are on foodstamps, you would have a budget of $38 per person per week.

Another idea: Cooking for yourself is usually more expensive than cooking for more people. (How many one-serving grocery items do you know?) So, why don't you arrange to cook for two friends and you (3 people) and take turns. That way you only cook once in three days and the cost will be lower for all of you!

Maybe useful information is also available online: http://cookcheap.com/, http://www.countingthecost.com/, etc

Edit:

You got me started...

Here is a recipe that we really like and the cost is about $1.00 per serving: http://www.healthyharvestpasta.com/recipes/R_ RedPepperCsr.asp

Hey i was just wondering if you could give me the recipe for the bread that you make?? and the calorie content?

Well i just recently tried this and it wasnt at all that bad...and its not REALLY low in calories its just a lil less than what its supposed to be..well anyways..i take MARIAS CESAR DRESSING (which is by the way VERY thick stuff) and i take some lemon juice and pour it in till its more of a salad dressing texture...and it makes more dressing so you can use less of the stuff!

I have a GF Grill and used it a lot for salmon, skirt steak pinwheels, and chicken breasts.  As for the dry chicken, you can easily overcook them on this thing, so I would take them off when they were just barely opaque inside, like 4.5 minutes.  I marinade my fresh chicken breasts in a zip lock back and then cut each chicken breast in half to grill, they fit better on the pan that way and some chicken breasts are so large, they are really more like 3-4 ounce portions after you cut them in half like that.

I love that tortilla wrap idea!  never thought of that! I have some good nonfat refried black beans from Trader Joes.  I'm going to try making mine with shrimp, pico de gallo, lowfat cheese and the beans.  YUM.  Thanks for the idea!!

Oooooh, I just thought about doing a Chicken or Shrimp Pesto Wrap!  With a schmear of good pesto and some feta cheese and spinach to fill it out!  YUM!

how do you make skirt steak pinwheels?! :) Sounds goOD!!

Mayo is egg & oil, so you could make your own (or aioli w/ garlic) or try just using oil and an egg or egg white. I don't think plain yogurt would coat & stick well like oil or egg does.

I don't like Mayo, I use Grapeseed oil Veganaise

http://www.followyourheart.com/vegenaise.php

It's oil based but sans egg.

Good luck! Crunchy potato sounds yummy, let us know what works!

so since you dont like mayo i doubt it tastes much like mayo then right? :(

All the cake mixes here have sugar and the diet cola makes the mixture really sweet.  Most people seem to like this.  Personally, I find the finished product just too sweet.  If you want less sweetness, just use plain club soda instead of the diet cola.  The fizz makes the cake light.

that is an awesome idea! i never thought of that! im trying to stay away from those artificial sweeteners but I LOVE diet 7up and lemon cake mix..i deff have to try it the way u suggested thank you!!!

Weight Loss Can Anyone Offer Tips on Feeling "Full" Apr 16 2008

Original Post by stewmama:

I did a diet in the fall and lost about 15 lbs the whole time feeling VERY full.  It had a great "detox" phase where you stopped eating certain foods high in sugars and fat and stuck to fruits veggies, whole grains (no bread or pastas at that point though), some low fat diary and lots of BEANS.  Let me tell you, the more fiber-full your diet, the more full you will feel.

The only problem I have with the high fiber diet is that I tend to look and feel bloated, but I'm going to try out some Beano as advised by someone else on another thread I posted.  It definitely helps me with my desire to snack, though.  After eating a bowl of my 5 bean chili or my minestrone without pasta, I feel absolutely very well sated.

what is beano?!

I needed a quick lunch on the go last week so I went to a salad bar at my local grocery store. The girl in front of me was SO SLOW and so I got to overhear her talking to her friend about everything she put in her 'salad'.

Girl 1: what's the difference between these lettuces?

(there were iceberg, spinach and spring mix trays)

Girl 2: (pointing to the iceberg) that one has less calories

Girl 1: (getting 1/2 cup of iceberg) good, I'm on a really strict diet

Girl 2: oh, good for you. What are you doing?

Girl 1: mostly just trying to eat low cal and exercise a bit

(I thought, oh good, she's being healthy! she's in pretty good shape, but maybe she wants to tone up. I then watched Girl 1 load up her salad with a few veggies, but not much, and then hit the dangerous end of the salad bar, the part that has nothing to do with salad. She got at least a 1/2 cup each of potato salad, macaroni salad, tuna salad and pasta salad. Each of these are almost pure mayo/oil. Then she covered the small green part of her salad in bacon bits, croutons, and tortilla chip strips. She she reached the dressing. Now I go to this salad bar quite a bit so I've gotten the nutritional info on all of their products and her 'salad' must be over 1200 calories so far)

Girl 1: what dressing is best (picks up the lite oregano vinaigrette at 50 cal per 2 Tbsp, my favorite)

Girl 2: Oh don't do that, vinaigrettes are almost 100% oil!, here try this one (hands her the 'country herb' a kicked up version of ranch) This is better (190cal per 2 Tbsp)

- May I never have such an 'informed' friend.

hahah the end of that seriously made me giggle for a good 5 minutes!!

Don't usually do fast food, but a while ago, I went to Quizno's: 1 of their new 200 cal sammies (you can choose either chicken or steak) and a cup of their chili at 140 cals = 340. Seems small, but I had something a little before :X

At Wendy's I used to mix and match (just 2!): baked potato, side salad, chicken nuggets, or their chicken sandwich.

At McDonald's: the hot n' spicy McChicken without the mayo, or a grilled Snack Wrap, or even their double cheeseburger, which clocks in at around 460. I can usually factor that into my daily #s w/out too much trouble.

Try your best to look up caloric information before you go, or guesstimate. And I dunno about you, but I always order water.

hmmm i heard about the chili from there not being all that fattening! great suggestion...and thanks to everyone else who already gave me some suggestions...keep em coming ppl!!!

Almond butter is like peanut butter, except made out of almonds. You can find it at pretty much any grocery store next to the peanut butter. I think it's pretty common, because a lot of people are allergic to peanut butter. It's really good, but don't get it if you have no self control like me!

Hahaha i dont think i should get it then bc i dont really have self control lol and i LOVE almonds everything about them...almond paste plain almonds ETC!! lol

I have a desk job and have just started to do the water bottle & gum trick. It really does work. The home thing is all together different. I don't have small children at home anymore but I have a husband (same thing sometimes) who has never had a weight problem and thinks he has to eat up until bedtime. It's hard not to participate in this ritual but now I make myself fold laundry, cause you can't eat & fold laundry at the same time!! Hang in there!!

hahahahahah im just laughing at the she doesnt have small children at home but does have a husband which is like the same thing...sorry...that just like made me giggle so much..anyways yea gum is a good trick! it works in two ways..ur keeping ur mouth occupied and u realize that if you eat anything it wont taste as good because u have the minty taste (or whatever taste) in ur mouth bc of the gum!

wow almond butter is expensive.. at least where i'm from anyways. that would have been like $12. I wanna go buy some now it's so tasty lol.

Almond butter isn't unhealthy.. you just need to think of other ways to eat it.. on celery or carrot sticks, apples, spread on a brown rice cake. very delicious.. and if your spreading it rather then eating it off a spoon it won't go as fast. think of  it as a condiment, like ketchup.. not a food group

I think not buying it for a while may be a good idea. I do the same thing with cashews, i'll buy a tin and they'll be gone in 3 or 4 days.. so I've stopped buying them. Everyonce in a while try it by buying a small jar, and seeing what you do with it.. if you can't space it out, don't buy it again for another month or so.

On the positive side of your day, at least your fibre intake will be good!

and it was healthy fat. so it's better than eating 1500calories of doghnuts lol.

what is almond butter?? and where can i get some??? lol

I just recieved mine in the mail and honestly i dont know why everyone is making such a big deal about how bad the texture is..it wasnt THAT bad...i was kinda getting grossed out while eating it bc of what it smelled like b4 i cooked it..and bc of what everyone was negatively saying about them...but honestly to save calories theyre really not that bad! as for how i made them (getting back to the topic of the post lol)

I took like 1/4 of a yellow onion and put it in a pan with some nonstick olive oil spray (0 cal) and browned them a bit to get some sweetness outta them (with a little bit of salt) and then i added 2/3 a cup of those morning star farms "meat" crumbles then i added 1/2 cup of ragu cooked it a bit and then mixed it into the cooked shirataki noodles (i cooked them by draining off all that smelly liquid a couple of times lol and then i boiled them for like 3 minutes then i put them in a bowl with a paper towel under em then i nuked em for like a minute then blotted with paper towel again (be careful when u blott after u nuke em ITS HOTT!!) and seriously it wasnt that bad!!!!

I read on here that someone puts hot sauce in fat free cottage cheese to dip vegetables in and it gave me an idea.  I could mix hidden valley ranch fat free dip powder mix with 16oz fat free cottage cheese and mix it in a blender until it is smooth as sour cream.  It turned out awesome and according to my calculations it only had 8.75 calories per tablespoon.

I really want to run with this fat free cottage cheese thing.  I could water the dip down and make a really low calorie ranch dressing or I could make different dips or even a low cal creamy Italian dressing.  I’m even going blend fat free cottage cheese to make a sour cream substitute.

There is a warning though.  This stuff was so good that my wife and I ate all of it in a weekend.  We dipped carrots, celery, cucumbers and even chicken in it.  This stuff is high in sodium so I ended up gaining 3 lbs of water that weekend.  So I’m going to save it for special occasions from now on.

What do you think?

i have a question...does it taste like cottage cheese though or does the ranch seasoning mask that yuckie taste of the cottage cheese? lol i hateeee cottage cheese...but if it doesnt taste like it im all over this recipe!

Apple butter should be in the jam/jelly section. It has no fat. To give a simple description it is applesauce with more spices cooked very slowly until it is very thick and spreads like room temperature butter.

1 tablespoon only has about 30 calories. Although it would be considered high in sugar, it is a great low calorie spread.

I make a lower sugar version by making an unsweetened applesauce and then putting that in the slow cooker on low with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves and some mace. The applesauce turns brown as the water is cooked out of it. It is apple butter when it is about half the volume as the original applesauce.

 oh ok thanks!!
