It's very interesting that the biggest doubters among scientists are the petroleum geologists. I think they're just protecting their paycheck.

....

So first off I guess I should say I fall in the category of people you think are protecting their paycheck...but also fall outside of that group..haha!

I am workin on my masters in geophysics and will undoubtedly work for an oil company doing exploration seismology when I graduate.  But, for my thesis work I am studying a depleted oil reservoir and analyzing its potential use for CO2 sequestration. I go to school in Houston (oil capitol of the world) and this debate is brought up  A LOT.

I guess I just have a few things I wanna add to this thread.

I agree with what trhawley said on page 2...There isn't much debate about whether or not climate is changing...but on how much if any is anthropogenic and what factors are most important to global temperatures.

Tons and tons of data show that global climate has always been very cyclic.  The data also show that the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere have the same trend as temperatures.  The largest issue in this debate I see (in the geoscience community anyway) is when scientists say"see how CO2 and temperatures go up and down together?  That means that CO2 concentrations control global temperatures".  Assuming a relationship simply from noticing a trend is completely against the scientific method...and tons of scientists ignoring that....Its so bizarre....they are just completely throwing out a huge portion of their training and just going along with everyone saying that its a fact.  I'm not saying they aren't related in that way, but a trend doesn't prove anything.  There are a ridiculous amount of factors in global temperatures and before we can say that increasing CO2 concentrations increases global temperatures, we need to consider ALL the factors and how they fit in.  For example...solar energy...I personally think the SUN is a bigger factor than CO2 concentrations.

Having said that, I am studying CO2 sequestration and think its important to research many different possible ways to affect temperatures.  I don't think the debate on whether or not humans are responsible for climate change is even something people should talk about.  We have not been responsible for past climate changes and yes...the climate would change even if we weren't here.  I think what we need to focus on are ways to deal with climate change and to possibly curve the effects.  I don't think humans are so powerful that we can control the weather...like thunderstorms or hurricanes...but I think we can potentially change different factors of global temperature(like the amounts of CO2...and more importantly...H20 in the atmosphere).  I really really really don't want to live in an ice age and if CO2 does increase global temperatures...we should probably start burning as many fossil fuels as we can....because the global temperature trends show this...

At the end of an ice age, temperatures will rise increase very rapidly(on a geologic time scale anyway)....then will begin dropping back down until we are in another ice age(as you can see in the link I posted at the top). I don't really mind a few degrees of temperature increase...but I really dont want to live on a planet half covered in ice.  Right now, we can't prevent the cyclic temperature changes...but I hope some day we can! and thats not for my own job security.

Long time no see Maddie!!  How was the panama trip?  I saw some pictures on facebook....looked fun!  and you looked hot in your bikini!!!

I have been very bad for the past few months :(

I completely stopped running or working out and my diet was horrible.  I had got down to about 151 but then went back up to 157 after a few weeks of eating everything in site.  I went to las vegas with my husband and my dad and my dad took us to tons of nice restaurants were i couldnt resist stuffing myself like crazy.  Today I was back down to 154 but tomorrow I am leaving for home so I know it will be tough.  I am bringing my running shoes and some weights though so hopefully I can at least start exercising again.  I just want to get under 150 by christmas and I will be happy.  It has been very slow progress, but I think that next semester will be better and I will finally be able to make my goal.  Stupid school getting in my way :P

Hope you all are well!

Besides counting calories, i started running and lifting weights this summer.  Ive never been a runner or very athletic, so I started out not being able to do much...but by the end of summer I was able to run about 7 miles.  But now I've gotten much busier with school and my training went downhill...i am running about 3 miles every other day now and lifting when i can fit it in.  Luckily, with so little spare time, I sometimes forget to eat or just dont have the time...so calorie-wise I have been ok without even really thinking about it.  Im happy to know that I can maintain without working too hard, but I want to start losing again!!!

I would love to join you, but I have a bit over 10 lbs to go.  I am 5'9'' and my starting weight back in April was 177.  This morning I was 151.6 and my goal is 140.  I have actually never been down this low in my adult life(im 23) so I may want to readjust my goal once I get down there.  I think I like Monday weigh ins a lot more than friday.  I always do better on the weekend so my numbers are usually lower on Monday!  haha!

wow des, that is amazing!  That cleanse sounds really hardcore!  Congrats for making it this long...and I really doubt all of that lose is water weight!  I mean, how many calories are in the drink?  I bet you will still be down at least 5 lbs after the cleanse...which would mean you made it to 25lbs.  Crazy!!!

this morning I was 152.6 (down from 156.0 from last week)!  Last week when I got my motivation back, I worked really hard and it has paid off!  I would love to be 147 by thanksgiving so itll be a 30 total lose by the time I see my family again.  Last they saw me was around 157 so yeah...that would be a big difference I think.  I think it is hard for me and the people I am around everyday to see any changes in my body, but I know my family can tell since they see me so infrequently.  Since I can only manage to lose pretty slowly I'm gonna have to work super hard to get there, so wish me luck!

I'm sorry I have been such a downer lately.  You were right des, I need to look at what I have accomplished and not feel bad about needing a bit of a break.  Things have gotten so stressful since this semester started up and I think I still need to learn to handle it better.  Looking at my habits as an undergraduate or even last semester I can see my improvement though.  I usually would lose weight over summer, and then slowly ruin any progress I made throughout the school year.  At least now I seem to be able to maintain without too much work on my part.  I think I finally have my motivation back and even just by working really hard yesterday, I can see the reward from the scale.  I wanted to go run this morning because I just got some new running shoes but my feet hurt too bad!!  Wednesday I had another interview and wore a new pair of dress shoes...they gave me the worst blisters on my heals.  I was really pissed at my shoes and the people I interviewed with(they made the location of the interview a really strange place so I had to walk really far) until this morning.  I got an offer!!  I am soooo excited and happy and even though I got an einstein bagel to celebrate, I was good and only ate half!  I am just so relieved that I am finally out of that hump or depression or whatever.  So happy today!

nancster, I will probably be weighing in forever!  haha!  my weightloss has been so slow and sometimes its frustrating...just like this last month has been.  Just try to stay positive!!  and 1.3 lbs is not slow for a week!  that's awesome!!!

Des, how is the cleanse going?  what all does it entail?  I dont know anything about it!

i was 156 yesterday.  I haven't really moved much in the last month and a half so I guess thats good.  Things are getting so rediculously busy and I have been eating/drinking too much so I guess I should be happy to be maintaining.  I have to get my proposal for my thesis work together in the next few weeks, so I don't really see that changing much.  I dunno...this week has been so stressful and I have been doing really stupid things(lost a friends expensive calculator, missed an interview because I thought it was in a different building) that make me feel like I am just falling apart.  Grad school sucks.  haha.  I cannot wait until I finish and can have an 8-5 job.  It makes me wonder how the students who have kids manage at all.  I can't even take care of myself let alone take care of a whole nother person.  They are rock stars.

today i have already had cereal, toast and peanut butter, and a bacon egg and cheese bagel from einstein bagels...so yeah...not doing so well.  I need to get back to the mindframe I had like a month and a half ago...i just dont know how to get there.

wow nicci!  that is so aweome!  congrats.  I think you are losing faster than anyone else on the thread and that's saying something because we are all doing really well!  Looking back on those 25lbs, what do you think was hardest, easiest about losing them?  A fun motivational thing to do now is to load up a backpack or some sort of bag with stuff until it weighs 25lbs and carry it around for a bit.  Its crazy how much extra we used to carry around with us!!  You will def. make it to 145 by christmas...I hope I can too!  Good luck and thanks for being such great motivation for me!  I am NOT gonna eat that extra piece of pizza!!!

Gibbit, Im working on my masters in geophysics, you?  I live really close to campus, so I don't have to deal with traffic much BUT the parking on campus is really annoying and I think those traffic cops are hilarious....blowing their whistles and acting all important when a 4 way stop would probably be more effective!

I cannot imagine an apartment giving a curfew kelleigh!  That really sucks.  I would be so pissed.  I really want to grill just so i can have some normal food, but we don't have a grill and I am too poor to get one right now!  That sounds so yummy though!!  And you know what??  I was shaving my legs this morning and holy cow, they are covered in bug bites!!  we have been sitting outside a lot and I guess I just didn't notice them biting me!

last night I had a total melt down before going to bed...i was just thinking about all the crappy stuff in my life right now and started acting like a child.  So then I decided to list all the GOOD things in my life to help me feel better.  At least I have a place to go(school) where there is power, a fridge, microwave, a/c, internet.  And my husband is fantastic, my running is improving(even though I have been overeating), we didn't have any damage from the storm, etc. etc.  I think its nice to be able to vent in situations like this...but its also important to focus on the positive...it could be so much worse!!

yeah...i check centerpoints page a lot.  I am surprised they haven't had server issues considering how many people must be checking it!  I also think its a bit early to say zipcodes are "restored" when only 80% really is.  That leaves 1/5 of the people to be bummed!

I have been running but haven't been doing weights much.  I did a little this morning and it was hard!  I cannot believe how quickly muscles "forget" what they have done!  I am really gonna focus on getting back into my weight routine as well as my normal running this week.  Yesterday Jeremy and I went to the gym and played raquetball as an easy day after our long run.  We used to play a lot in wyoming and I forgot how much fun it is!  I am really terrible and enthusiastic so I make a fool out of myself...its so funny to me that I am cracking up the whole time!!!

Thanks about the picture!  My mom has this amazing way of making people look way thinner than they are in photos.  That profile pic was taken middle of july so about 10 lbs heavier than I am right now.  So with my mom's magic, that is about how I really look now.  haha!

I hope your cousins have insurance!  I am just renting and have renters insurance and we didnt have any damage at all so the financial side of things aren't so bad.

When I was in high school and living in oklahoma, there was a really bad ice storm  that took the power away for a few weeks.  That was crazy because my sister and her family came to stay with us so we had 6 people and a 2 week old baby sleeping all in one room! My parents have a fireplace so we stayed nice and warm.  At the time my sister had an amazing aquarium with lots of cool fish and frogs and they all froze to death because she couldn't transport them all from her house.  So sad!!

yeah, I still don't have power.  I have been eating all my meals at school where there is a microwave...so lots of easy mac, soup, tuna, chips, and other nonperishable stuff as well as lots of fast food.  I am sooo ready to cook myself a nice healthy meal.  My zip is supposed to be 80% restored today so I am really hoping I am not in the unlucky 20%.  Last week I didn't mind so much because the weather was great, but now I am starting to get really annoyed.  The weather is starting to get worse and I have the hardest time sleeping in the heat.  AND our landlord was stupid and painted our windows shut...so we can't even open them at night to cool off!!  And I am also really tired of cold showers.  I have gone to the gym to shower a few times, but sometimes its too inconvienent and I need to do it at home.  Argh...sorry about the rant...I am just SO ready for my power to come back on!  You know whats really sad?  If I don't have power by tomorrow morning, I will be weighing myself by candlelight because I usually get up before sunrise!  I too am afraid of what the scale will say.  I have been avoiding it all week.  Stupid Ike!

edit to add a little more ranting:  AND classes at uh have been in session since last tuesday so I have been here all week....which means I have been wearing all my clothes and can't do laundry.  I am getting seriously low and really don't want to go to a laundramat.  If UH hadn't opened last week, I could have spent the time up in oklahoma with my parents where the weather is beautiful and electricity is plentiful!  ARGH.  Wow, I feel so much better now!  Thanks for letting me get that out!

This is what we did at my bachelorette party...it was a blast!

While pregaming we decorated tshirt and tank tops...  We did a candy and hooker theme and I was the pimpin' bride and all the other girls were my hoes.  we tied lifesavers to the shirts and wore ring pops and candy neclaces, bracelets, and garters.  The girls wrote prices on their backs and made me some money at the bars!  They had stuff like a nibble on the neck for $4 or a "kiss"(hershey kiss however the guy wanted to be fed it...or a real kiss if the girl was daring enough) for $1, a dance for $2...whatever the girls wanted to do.  We also made flower boquets out of pixie sticks and other candies and my made of honour who was the "naughty flower girl" that night sold them.  We all looked kinda slutty(I will put a picture in my gallery so you can see) but it was a blast and they made me over $200!!  We made a big scene everywhere we went and I also got lots of free drinks bc everyone knew I was the bride to be!

well, I just got back to houston today and was unable to weigh myself in the morning like usual.  I will do it tomorrow.  I think I did ok this past week, especially considering I went up to my parents.  I did my long run(about 7 miles) on sunday so I felt like I could eat extra.  My parents and Jeremy were all having margaritas and I was super tempted to have one or two but I resisted it.  Instead I had a smore!  The weather was beautiful up there so we had a campfire.  It was so much fun and so pretty out that I hated coming back down here.  I don't have power in my house yet and there is a power line down in our backyard so I am guessing its going to be a while.  Luckily there is a refridgerator and microwave at school I can use.  for lunch I had soup and now I am having tuna..haha!

Oh something else cool to tell you ladies....I really like maurices and always go there with my mom when I go home.  Last time I was there(mid july) I bought a size 9/10 long and was super excited about getting into such a small size.  This time, I bought an 7/8 long and they fit great!  Then I got excited and tried on lots of other clothes including really cute dresses.  I have a wedding in December so I need a new dress.  I can't believe how much more fun shopping is when I actually look good in the clothes!  I am going to wait till the weekend before the wedding to buy a dress so that it is sure to fit me but I still want to look around now to see what will look good on me...so fun!!

hope everyone is having a great week and des, I hope you have power and warm water!!!

des, that sucks about the asthma and binges. I am glad you are getting back on track. Was the rest of your trip fun?? What do you think about Ike? My parents were here yesterday and today and just left. They really want me and Jeremy to head up to Oklahoma. We are planning to go if our classes get canceled. I dont have safetly concerns, but if I get a 4 day weekend it would be fun to go up to OK and I really don't want to sit in a house without AC if the power goes out. I feel wussy though because I have never been through a hurricane and this could be my first one if we don't leave. I am sure I will have plenty of other opportunities though..haha!

I have been so busy with school that I have hardly had time to eat.  Mondays and wednesday I teach labs from 11:30-2:30 so I never have time for lunch...then I have class till 10pm so I don't eat dinner till really late too and I am usually too tired to eat much.  Even though its stressful being so busy, its been great for my diet!!

I am glad you are back Maddie!!  and that is awesome that you are still losing without focusing on exercise so much.  that is a really great accomplishment.

nicci, this thread has really helped me realize how much bad alcohol does to my body.  Every time I drink I gain about 3 lbs from the booze and all the extra calories I eat when I am drunk/hung over.  It has really helped me realized how its just not worth it right now when I am working so hard to be healthy.  That is awesome you haven't gained any from it and I bet working with a personal trainer will really help focus you.  I have never had a personal trainer but I would love to do it some day.

Saturday we tried to do our morning run and I had majorly bad cramps and couldn't run more than 27 minutes.  Our goal this week was to run 72 minutes so I was really bummed I couldn't do it.  So, we tried again on Sunday.  That time we decided to go to the gym and run on treadmills.  I was able to run the whole time but felt a little like I cheated because I forgot to set the incline to 1 for the first half.  But still, I think I did a good job because I ran about 6.2 miles.  I was exhausted afterwards but its so cool that every week I run farther than I ever have before.  Last night I did what I call my modified "Maddie's workout" (seriously, that is what I put in my workout journal...haha) but I bummed the weights up from 10lbs to 15lbs.  It was so hard!!!  Then I tried to run this morning but I think it was just too soon after my long run and hard workout.  I really don't want to push myself too hard so I quit after half a mile and walked back to the car.  When I did that, I started thinking about how I could barely go half a mile when I first started running.  It's hard to believe that I can run over 6 miles now.  Thinking about that made me feel better about needing a rest day after 2 hard days.

So now my weighin:

 8/26:158.4

9/2:160.2

today:156.2

woo!  I'm past the 10 lbs mark for this thread and 20 lbs total!

Since starting this thread I have definitely noticed some patterns in my behavior.  I guess I'm a little like nes with a bit of an all or nothing mentality.  I haven't fallen off the wagon too hard but occasionally I will get really unmotivated and just want to give up.  then  I will get really motivated and work really hard.  I can see that in my weighins.  I tend to stay at about the same place for a while, then drop down pretty quickly.  I think that has to do with how hard I work and with TTOM(the big drops are always right after).

So, my goal for the next few weeks is going to be to not let bad days effect me so much.  I would love to have the motivation I have right now all the time!  I know I can do well, I just have a hard time doing well all the time.

shew, thats a long post...I hope everyone has a great week!

I was really really bad this weekend.  Saturday we moved which started out great.  I figured it would be a really great workout, which it was, but we were so busy and tired that we ended up getting fast food for lunch AND dinner.  Then I ended up drinking too much which led to more eating.  :(  I have been staying away from alcohol pretty well but gave in.  Now I regret it and am paying for it with this crappy weigh in.  I know in the long run it doesn't matter that much but it makes me feel pretty crappy.  I was really hoping to be down to 157 and out of the 160s forever but not yet I guess.  So this week I am really going to work on focusing on getting back on track which is probably going to be harder than it sounds.  I have lots of stuff to do for school, an interview for a summer internship for next summer, and tons of reading to catch up on for my thesis work(I have to propose this semester).

on the bright side, I love our new place(except for the roaches we have seen and our neighbors 5 loud dogs...i guess I am having trouble focusing on the bright side today..haha!) and was able to run 5.5 miles in 66 minutes last friday.  We ran inside on treadmills at the gym which was way cooler and easier but really boring!  I don't think we will run our long runs inside again...its just so much more fun outside.

hope you all have a great week!

exactly where I was last week.  But I am happy with that because over the weekend I went over 160 for a few days.  I am hoping that by next weigh in I will get to 157...which would make 10 lbs lost since the start of this thread!!!!

Classes started yesterday and I am already getting pretty busy.  I was able to fit in weights yesterday and a run this morning though.  And parking is such a mess right now that I ended up having to park almost a mile away I think.  It sucks because its so hot out and I get all sweaty by the time I get to my building, but I like how much I am required to walk around campus during the day.  I think all the little trips I take between buildings and the long walks to and from the car will really add up.

I hope everyone has a fantastic week!!!

I have tried green tea...but I am not really a fan.  I will try it again though...I recently discovered that I like cherry pie...after spending my whole childhood and adult life to this point absolutely hating all cooked fruit and berries.  Taste buds change I guess.  We went to chilis for lunch and I was soooo tempted to get a soda.  But I didn't!!  Now I want a nap.  haha!

yesterday I was getting really dizzy when I would stand up...even if I did it slowly so I decided to take a couple maintenance days.  I have been counting calories, but I think 1200-1400 just really isn't enough for me.  so its been kinda nice being able to indulge a bit.  I had a yummy (and healthy) homemade chocolate and strawberry smoothie last night and then the chilis today was good.  I am not going over board, but just allowing about 600 more cals.  I will cut back some tomorrow.  Stay motivated everyone...we are doing so well!!

Where's maddie?  I bet she is busy now that her internship is over with.  hopefully she will still weigh in this week!

wow!  look at all these good weighins!!!  well done des!  changing things up really helped!  welcome back nicci, that is awesome that you were able to lose on vacation.  Did you try really hard or not think about it all or what?  I am always horrible while in vacations!!

don't feel old tere because you aren't old!  looks like you lost some weight from last thursday so well done!

welcome aprilmay, tell us a bit about yourself!

So this week has been up and down.  I am so glad my internship is over and seeing the numbers fall(and I admit, I check every morning as well!) has really helped remotivate me.  I start classes next week so I am really going to have to focus to keep it up.  The first week is never too terrible, but I am sure I will get busy fast.

and now my weigh in!!!!

so 4.6 down from last week.  holy cow!  me and des must be twins!!  I think the big change that helped me was cutting back on caffiene and drinking more water.  I am sooo happy and am finally able to see differences in my body.  I can see my calf muscles and my tummy bulge does seem smaller.  woo!!

my goals this week are to eat more fruits and veggies, drink more water and NO caffiene!!

You will definitely be able to run a 5k by next year.  If you increase by 10% each week, you should be able to run a 5K by sometime in November!!!  I started at half a mile in 6 minutes and increased my time by 2 minutes every week until we got to 30 minutes...so that is more than 10% but we were able to do it.  Saturday we ran for 55 minutes at about 11:20 per mile and we plan on running an hour this coming saturday.  I cannot believe that we are almost at an hour...it seemed so impossible when we first started.

Do you know what 5k you are going to enter?  I think the 5k run in the houston marathon is still open.  We did the NASA lunar rendezvous run last month and are thinking about doing the Got Guts celiac awareness run and food fair in austin next month.  Jeremy has celiac, so I think the food fair part will be really fun for him.

Now that my internship is over, I finally have free time!  Since we will be moving soon I went through my closet to see what doesn't fit anymore!  I have a huge pile of jeans and pants that I am getting rid of..yay, progress indeed!  I am jealous of your flat tummy though.  My tummy is far from flat and I think it will be a very long time before that happens.

Last night I was sitting on our couch and Jeremy was sitting on the floor and he reached over and rubbed my calf and was like"wow!  you're legs are getting so firm!"  that made me feel good!!!

If things keep going the way they are I am going to have an insanely good weigh in tomorrow!  I can't wait!!!  I have been cutting down on caffeine and drinking a lot more water which I think is making a huge difference.  My goal this week is to eat out less and to not drink any caffeinated drinks!!!

haha...there are a lot of !'s in this post...can you tell im in a good mood??
