Heartbreaking.

Whatever influenced the person(s) who may have committed this act, it seems like it would be helpful if people were more aware of propaganda techniques.

Propagandists love short-cuts -- particularly those which short-circuit rational thought. They encourage this by agitating emotions, by exploiting insecurities, by capitalizing on the ambiguity of language, and by bending the rules of logic. As history shows, they can be quite successful.
The IPA is best-known for identifying the seven basic propaganda devices: Name-Calling, Glittering Generality, Transfer, Testimonial, Plain Folks, Card Stacking, and Band Wagon. According to the authors of a recent book on propaganda, "these seven devices have been repeated so frequently in lectures, articles, and textbooks ever since that they have become virtually synonymous with the practice and analysis of propaganda in all of its aspects." (Combs and Nimmo, 1993)

sun,

I don't think you were oversentive. You were, though, sensitive to the fact that what was portrayed in the movie is a reality for a not insignificant portion of our society (physical assault, sexual abuse, etc) and the reality of abuse is without regard to a person's appearance, age, or any other personal characteristic.

I stopped watching horror movies in 1988. I am very selective about thriller/action movies.  I simply to do not find abuse or murder to be entertaining. I don't even want to invite the concept of violence as entertainment into my mind. That's my choice. So most of the time when something like that is discussed, I refrain from engaging.

I did see Crash. And I did see Gran Torino. Those movies contain violence, but I found it be more in the context of questioning of our society and our morality and our humanity than a depiction of violence for the sole sake of amusement.

there's more room in a broken heart

you're not fully human until you've had your heart broken

and you're not fully divine until you choose to love again anyway

a lot of people don't know that in the u.s., when you call a call center to place an order for something, there's a possibility that the person taking your call is in prison.

yep.  there are companies trying to save a buck on their labor costs who can pay inmates extremely low wages and get a tax cut for doing it.

and you're giving your name, address, phone #, credit card number and expiration to this person ...

yeah, bad idea.

but i agree, that person had stolen your info, or purchase stolen info.

there are security breaches with companies all the time -- i just heard about t-mobile getting hacked the other day.

yeah, our customers are the super-rich and apparently, they've taken quite a hit and are scaling back on their extravagant expenses too, so they'll be sending their kids to less expensive boarding schools.

i look at financial blogs regularly

we're not in recovery yet.  we're in This sucks slightly less than before.

really weird thing - they've just built and are about to open a new toyota dealership in our town  o.O

g'morning!

found out yesterday that the economy is (finally) affecting our potential customers (i.e., we'll have a drop in enrollment this fall)

so everyone's job is at risk (they just laid off the first person)

so i will have to be cautious and prudent in use of internet

other than that, happy thursday!  Smile

is it just me, or is this thread incredibly sad?

we're social animals.  talking to each other shouldn't be a crime.  i understand not wanting to talk sometimes, but if i want to be left alone, i go to a place where i can be alone; i don't go to a public forum and then get bitter when people try to interact with me.

i agree that it's kind of sad, pg

i'm much more extraverted, so it feels like rejection when others won't talk

for all that introverts complain about how awful it is to interact with others, for extraverts, it's awful to be ignored.

i tend to not talk to people at the gym.  i did when i took a water class, but that was different.  i mainly don't talk to people because nobody will make eye contact and clearly want to be left alone.

i'm not oblivious.  i can read body language.  you don't want any chat, you won't get any.

The U.S. is a lot more individualistic than just about any other country and as a result, it's much more acceptable to not interact with others in almost any situation.

If the gym were like a library, they'd post signs saying "no talking" or "Please keep conversations to a minimum volume so as not to bother other patrons" and the people who work there would shush people when they talk too loud or too much.

:)

i recently dreamed that i was in a house in the woods and the kitchen was really really long and narrow and had a kitchen counter down the whole length on one side and windows all down the other side and the counter was covered with dirty dishes and messes that someone left to be cleaned up and this guy came in and fussed at me for not having cleaned up the kitchen counter.  dude! it wasn't me!
