| Weight Loss | Are "burning fat" and "losing weight" essentially the same thing??? | Jul 23 2008 15:24 (UTC) |

I think there's lots of confusion on this topic, because fat loss is a complex process. But generally, when you first begin to diet, you have a fairly easy time losing "weight" and this is mostly water weight. It's the result of decreasing calories which decreases sodium levels and makes you excrete water. When that "weight loss" levels off, you lose more slowly, but unless you are starving yourself, it is more likely this is "fat" loss. Basically, your longer term "weight" loss on the scale is a better indicator of how much fat you are losing than the shorter term weight loss, which is probably mostly water weight. Hope this helps a little. Keep with it! |

| Weight Loss | it's happened...le plateau!!! dun dun duuuunnnn!!! | Jul 18 2008 18:50 (UTC) |

The advice above is all really good. I also agree that a plateau isn't a plateau until it's been going on for about 2 weeks or more. I would just keep encouraging you to keep going. Accept that plateau's happen. It's your body fighting against starvation mode. Press on and it will break. It's mostly a hard, hard mental time. But don't give up! One thing that really worked to break my 3-week streak of being 136 to 138, was to calorie shift. I, too, eat 1200 a day. I would eat 950 one day and 1500-1700 the next day. I just made sure that I was not too much above the weekly 8,400 allowance). That, combined with a big change in working out should help your body push past the plateau faster. You might try doing circuit training, or a class, or anything different. Your body has probably adjusted to the cardio and weight training the way you are doing it- even when you "vary" the intensity. You might need a whole new activity at least temporarily. Good luck- you've done great so far. Don't let a little plateau do you in. |

Just found this thread and would like to join in too. I've been using cc since March 29 with pretty good success. I had some surgery in late April which has left me unable to really exercise except slow walking on level until end of June. My stats: AGE: 42 Height 5'3 Weight: 142 Build: Small (Wrist is 6 1/4") Weight Goal:127 Non Weight Goal - 1) Marine Corp Marathon under 5 hours 2) Working out 5 times a week doing 3 runs and 2 x-training workouts I would love to be a part of a support system for those of us over 40. It IS harder to lose even with exercise. A runner friend of mine is 30, the exact same amount over weight as I am. We are both dieting, and she is losing 2 lbs. a week, while I do the same thing and lose 1. Sometimes 0. It can be discouraging. It definitely seems to require much more patience to take it off "later" in life. |

I would really like to join this challenge! I am 5'3" and 144 lbs. on a small frame. My goal weight is 127, and the Calorie Count profile says the target is July 20, so this is the perfect challenge to keep me on track. I am running my first full marathon on May 4, so for the next 2 weeks I won't be "dieting" so much as watching what I eat as I taper to avoid gaining weight. Also, I have been really surprised by the lack of weight loss while training for a marathon. I at least expected to lose weight after each long run. What I found was that after my lon run of 20, then 23, then finalyy 26 (last weekend), I actually weighed about 5 pounds more! Then, it would come off after 3-5 days. I have read this has something to do with the stress of running long. The hormone that makes you bloat when you have your period is also triggered by the stress of running that long. I know it's just water, but it's hard to take mentally! I would really LOVE to be able to wear a bikini on July 19!! Right now, I don't want to even wear shorts when I'm running and it's a major pain because the weather is warming up. I look forward to encouraging everyone taking this challenge!

Are you male or female? This might not help, butyou are at least not alone. I am traing for a marathon, and am the same weight you are. After a long run, I will weigh up to 5 pounds more, but it gradually goes down over the next few days. With extreme exercise, the body holds on to water for awhile, thinking you are never going to stop exercising! Just keep doing what you're doing and weigh yourself every few days, in the morning, with no clothes. You will see a trend, but don't get hung up on the ups and downs. Weight is just like that. Hope this helps... |
