Mine is less of a diet tip as it is a life tip that applies to dieting. No matter how much you mess up (whether it's food, or exercise, or in your personal relationships or in your professional life), fix what you can, move on, and focus on doing the next right thing. We are all human. We make bad choices. We make mistakes. All we can do is learn from them and strive to not allow one mistake to compound. Regardless of your last choice, make your next choice right. |

1. Haagen Dazs dulce de leche ice cream (or good vanilla ice cream with caramel or butterscotch sauce) 2. White chocolate macadamia nut cookies 3. Toasted marshmallows. No chocolate or graham crackers necessary! 4. Rice krispie treats 5. Sugar babies. I don't know why, but I freaking love those things. |

I love many of the books you guys hate (sorry...), but my absolute most detested is A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. I had to read it in school, and I would have rather spent the time putting M&Ms in alphabetical order. I honestly think it was one of the ONLY reading assignments that made me resort to Cliff's Notes.

What everyone else said. I'd also like to add that I run marathons and I certainly don't run for 2 hours a day. That's ridiculous for almost anyone. You're going to seriously injure yourself. When you add in the dangerously low calories, this is NEVER something you're going to maintain. You keep this up, I give you less than a few weeks before the binge cycle starts. |

Musical--I didn't mean to imply you should just try to combat the depression with diet and exercise. Sure, it helps, but you've BEEN doing that and it isn't working for you. I was exactly where you are about a year ago. I decided not to take meds, but I DID commit to a once weekly therapy session, which has made a tremendous difference. I couldn't have gotten to where I am now by myself! Just remember, finding a good therapist is as (if not more) important than finding the right medication! They aren't all created equally, and not every one will be the right fit. PM me if you want to talk more personally about this stuff. I can definitely empathize with you--down to your statement about feeling like a burden on the people around you. |

This is NOT supposed to be a diet. This is supposed to be a healthy lifestyle--one you can maintain for years. Going out to eat is part of life, and if you stop enjoying that (especially when it's for your BIRTHDAY), then you are setting yourself up to fail. Why would you starve yourself all day just so you can eat at a restaurant? Seriously, one or two days of eating out is not going to kill you. Plus, if you go in hungry, you're more likely to make bad choices once you get there. Eat normally during the day. If it helps you mentally, get in a decent workout. Order what sounds good on the menu. Eat enough to feel sated without getting over-full. Enjoy the food. Stay off the scale for a few days to let the sodium work its way out of your body, and MOVE ON! |

I have issues any time people use words like "always," "never," and "inevitable" in connection with the human body. Everyone is so different that those kinds of generalizations are almost impossible to make. For MOST people, the weight gain that is associated with smoking comes primarily from substituting eating for cigarettes. So, for some, with the right plan, no weight gain registers at all. However, smoking has been shown to speed up your metabolism, so for others, even with the right plan, weight can creep on temporarily once they decide to quit. Again, it all depends on your individual body. Any doctor will tell you that they would rather you gain a few pounds and quit smoking than remain a smoker and lose weight. Keep eating healthy and exercising, and pretty soon your metabolism will work itself out and you will be able to lose. |

| Weight Loss | Hi Guys, does this sound like a good plan? | Mar 30 2009 22:08 (UTC) |

Welcome to CC Melanie! Your plan sounds great as a starting point. One of the things that people frequently overlook when they decide to start a diet/exercise plan is that you have to be open to tweaking it as needed. Stick with this for a few weeks and then assess how you're feeling. How is your energy level? Are you binge eating occasionally (which could indicate that your body isn't getting enough nutrient-wise)? Are you constantly hungry? Depending on the answers to these, you may need to change your caloric intake. Additionally, after a few weeks, changing up your exercise routine might help jump start things. You could trade in one of your elliptical days for running or walking outside, biking, etc. It's amazing how much harder your body works doing cardio outdoors than in the gym. It's great to meet you, and keep up posted! |

I second the wellbutrin. I've never personally taken it, but a lot of my friends do and have had good experiences. Having said that, be upfront with your therapist about your concerns. After speaking to mine, we opted not to go the drug route at first to see if I could overcome the depression without drugs, and it worked wonderfully for me. |

| Weight Loss | Major binge:( Help | Mar 27 2009 19:22 (UTC) |

There's no magic formula for anyone. It seems fair to say that 1400 is too low. Next week, knock it up to 1500 and see how that feels. Assess your energy levels, how you feel, your urges to binge, etc. Try not to get too hung up on the scale because when you mess with your intake, it can bounce around a bit. It'll even out, I promise. If you still feel low, go for 1600 the week after. Remember, this isn't a DIET, this is supposed to be a sustainable lifestyle. It's not supposed to feel like a life sentence! |

1400 is NOT enough, which is your problem right there! I'm 5'3'' and about 110, and when I was losing, I was eating around 1800 most days. PLUS, you can't really tone/build muscle effectively when you're undereating. SO, by adding calories you will be able to 1) make your metabolism work harder and likely shed those last few pounds you want gone; 2) build muscle more effectively; and 3) stave off the binge eating, which will make you healthier and happier overall. Sounds like a win-win-win to me! |

Binges can happen for a lot of reasons, but the one that jumps out at me given your post is that you may be over-restricting on a daily basis. You say you eat healthy and work out 5-6 days a week, but what is your average deficit? This used to happen to me, but once I upped my calories just a little on a day-to-day basis, the bingeing stopped. It's like, once I gave my body what it actually needed to survive, it stopped DEMANDING it. And while I know it's scary to up your calories a bit, think of it this way: adding 200 calories a day (or 1400/week) is still less than one of those 4000 calorie binges. Plus it puts YOU back in control. |

lillyla~ Let's face it, your hatred of the full fat yogurt is a cover for the fact that eating it scares the bejesus out of you. The same way nuts do. And the same way likely MOST foods that aren't on your "safe" list do. Overcoming this kind of thinking is hard, and it generally requires professional help. You can sit there and say you're going to make the changes. Heck, you may even force down the full fat yogurt for a day or so. But before long (already, it seems), you're going to be justifying the reduced fat instead and making up excuses for why you should go back to eating the way you were that got you to your 15.8 BMI to begin with. This has nothing to do with the yogurt and EVERYTHING to do with your disordered eating. Please take up the offer of professional help. Eating disorders rob you of so many things--your health, happiness, a regular life, healthy skin/nails/hair, and even potentially your ability to have children one day. It's not worth it. Don't you miss the days when you could go out to dinner with your family or friends without going into panic attacks all day long about what you will order and how many calories it might have? |
