| Weight Loss | losing weight in the summer or in the winter? | Jun 06 2008 19:11 (UTC) |

For me, summer time. Mainly because it is SO STINKIN' HOT AND HUMID here that I don't eat big meals...it just makes me feel sick when I do it. So I tend to eat smaller, less filling meals and eat lots of fruit and salads because they are cold...or at least not HOT things. In the winter I tend to want to cuddle up on the couch with hot cocoa and a big bowl of full fat chili with crackers or something. Not to mention I am not as concerned with how my clothes look on me since you can "hide" more in winter clothes. Samantha |

PB is my friend and enemy at the same time...I love it and can't stop at just one bite...I want the whole jar. So I try to limit myself. I remember as a teenager (don't you miss THAT metabolism) and I would smother my morning waffles with Peanut butter! OH YUMMY! Alas, as I get older, I find that I cannot do that and still hold on to my girlish figure! Samantha |

I know it can be intimidating but, trust me, nobody really cares about you. It may sound harsh to say it like that, but they are all there for them. Yes, you will see hot chicks walking around in skimpy spandex and guys with big muscles that are "showing off" by wearing tanks and stuff but most people there are just average people, trying to get or stay in shape and be healthy! Just do it! Samantha |

My answer to this is...just about everything. I love it on baked pita crisps (or non-baked for that matter). On my morning eggs/omelettes, fish, chicken, beef, pork, salads (instead of higher-cal, higher-fat dressings). Gosh, it's great on everything. In my opinion it is the World's Best Condiment!!!! | Fitness | How do I get a flat stomach? | May 28 2008 23:42 (UTC) |
|
I am 5'2", 128 pounds and my body fat is at 18%. (I am 31 years old so in the "Excellent" range, according to my trainer). But, I remember that even when I was at 118, I never had a flat stomach. It's just not how I am built. My point is, I don't know your body type. It could be that your tummy will get flatTER, but never truly FLAT. All depends on what your definition of flat is. Me, I have come to terms with the pooch that always resides right below my belly button...2 c-sections certainly haven't helped my cause... Samantha |

If I am not mistaken, the first calculator tells you what you burn just by living. Then, the second one shows what you burn with exercise AND your "normal" burn...same as what CC does. I don't think it's saying you should eat that many calories PLUS the top number. Samantha |

Robbyn, Are you saying that I just need to add some weights in to my routine to tone up? I have definitely noticed that I have slimmed down, as my clothes fit differently and I don't jiggle as much when I walk. I guess I am just hoping to be down to the weight I was when I started dating my husband but maybe I am too old to get there in a healthy way. Samantha |

Molly, LOVE the new couch and the kitty pictured there is SO STINKIN' CUTE!!!! I love kitties but, alas, my hubby and son are allergic so when my precious baby Zeke was put to sleep a year ago, I was unable to get another one. But I still love them so! You should be so proud of your accomplishments. I haven't had the tremendous weight loss you have but this change in my lifestyle makes me feel better overall! I am sleeping better, my skin is clearer, I have more energy and I don't jiggle as much when I walk anymore. I finally am starting to feel good about myself. Samantha |

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's well thought out and supportive responses to this topic. I particularly enjoyed seeing the BMI photo site that someone posted. It is amazing to see how someone with an "overweight" BMI looks very thin and in shape... I am 5'2" inches and currently weigh 129, which is in the "normal". But I think that at 140, I hit the "overweight" category. While I don't like the way I look at that weight, I certainly don't feel like I am overweight. Someone posed the suggestion that all calorie/nutrition information be posted on menus/fast-food billboards. I saw something on the news the other day that this has been mandated in, I want to say, New York City. Can someone else please tell me if this is right? I think this is an awesome idea. While it would not affect some people's choices of what to get, it would certainly make quite a few stop and think about ordering that Quarter Pounder with cheese. I work in a mall environment a couple days a week and get to do a lot of "people watching." One thing that I have noticed is that there seems to be more, let's call them hefty, children than there were 20 or 30 years ago. I can recall only one friend in my childhood who was overweight. My reasoning on this is that our parents (mine and my friends, at least) made us get out of the house and play outside...that and the sports teams, dance lessons, etc. There was more of a culture of activity than there is now. I also grew up in a generation that saw the first music video, Atari and the likes, which made EVERYONE much more likely to plop in front of the "boob tube" for hours at a time. From a personal perspective, my mother would have none of it. I was a lucky one, though. My family could afford to feed me well-balanced meals and place me into physical active extra-curricular activities. Some families are not that lucky. I was shopping at the grocery store the other day and was trying to replace some of my "not so healthy" items with "healthier" items and my grocery bill was at least $35 more than usual. It IS more expensive to eat "right" than it is too eat "fast". As a mother, it is very hard for me to try and figure out to feed my children. My son is an EXTREMELY picky eater and will try hardly anything. It is a battle I fight daily, and one I almost always lose as he would rather not eat at all than eat most of what I serve. My daughter, however, will try anything so I let her try everything! In our house, we try to limit the kid's TV/Internet time and get them playing...whether in the house or out of the house, if it is nice. We definitely are more active when the weather is nice but we try to engage them in physical things even when it is raining (taking them to the bowling alley or the play area at the mall, for example). In short (and sorry for the book)...I believe that it is our personal responsibility to educate ourselves and our children and *hopefully* set up future generations for success. If we were to ALL do this, imagine the change that would be created. This does not mean that I do not advocate people calling school boards, etc. to discuss school meals or other such actions. I think that is great, also but, as with sex, money, drinking, drugs, etc...healthy eating habits start in the home. Just my two cents, Samantha |

| Weight Loss | thoughts on Weight Watchers vs. CC? | May 17 2008 14:51 (UTC) |

I have done WW three times before. Once before I had kids and once after each time I had a baby...(I have 2!) It works but for some reason, I prefer to count my calories than to count my points. Plus, I love the "electronic" aspect of this. WW has a website like this, too but you have to pay for it. This is FREE! The first two times I did WW, I actually went to the meetings but felt like I was paying them $11 just so they could weigh me. So, I took the tools and everything, bought myself a nice digital scale and kept my own log. I am one of those that didn't NEED the meetings. Like I said, though, I definitely prefer CC to WW. For some reason, I feel like I have more freedom. No rules, restrictions or points to keep up with... Samantha |

bintzp - With such a stressful job, I can understand how it would be easy to slip into "old patterns". I was a psychology major in college and interned at a women's/children's shelter while in school. When I first got there, I was so high and mighty ("Why don't they just leave", "Why do they put up with it?", etc.) but it quickly humbled me. Keep strong...for you, for you job, for your sanity. Molly - I came across this thread and have been reading for a while and let me say that you totally crack me up with your "rants" and I use them as emotional "food" or spiritual "food" to keep me motivated on days that I am so NOT!!! So, thanks! Samantha |

I feel like one of my stumbling blocks to weight loss has been water retention from not drinking "enough" water so I have started carrying a reusable water bottle with me and filling it up. I have had two so far today (20 ounce bottle) and have a full one just waiting for me.... I heard a story not too long ago about a woman that died from drinking too much (it was on a radio show or something). Now, I know that I am not drinking "too much" but I want to make sure I drink the "right" amount also. Samantha |

I am 5'2" and currently weigh 130. Had my body fat analysis today and it was at 18% which is excellent (according to my trainer). My waist measurement was 26" and my hips were 36". I would like to lose an inch or two off hips and waist and another 5-10 pounds would be nice, too! Samantha |
