Fitness What is your "rain" gear for running? Sep 27 2009

Definitely spandex. It will get wet but it's supposed to at least wick the water away from your skin so you don't feel as bogged down. I have a windbreaker jacket that I use, and when it's really cold I'll wear a layer under it, but I tend to overheat on my runs anyway so it's usually not necessary.

Wicking socks are great too. Your shoes will get pretty wet, but as long as you stuff them with newspapers or paper towels immediately after and let them dry they should be ok. A hat or visor to keep rain out of your eyes is vital too. I can't run with a hood on, so having a visor helps a lot.

Cracker Barrel. Ugh. They think they can get away with mushy, bland food just because they have a ridiculously overpriced "gift store" attached. Either their food is disgustingly overcooked and mushy or it's slathered with butter. Good home cooking....right.

Maybe I just hate it because it was that or Perkins on my 5-day cross country road trip. All that food tastes the same after 2 days.

I've been on Seasonale for 4 years now, the first 2 years on the brand name and then the last 2 on the generic. I have gained a good amount of weight in those past few years, but I think it was mainly because I moved out of my teens into my 20s, and started lifting heavily.

I never had any trouble with building muscle, but that could just be me. I mean, now it makes me wonder what I would possibly look like without the pill?

It makes me sad to think of all the terrible "advice" the site is giving that will be taken seriously by some men, whether or not they believe it's a joke.

Apparently women are too emotionally insecure/stupid to be able to handle a mature conversation, and men have to resort to tactics such as these to manipulate them into doing what they want. <sigh>....and I wonder why I'm single.

I agree. I was pretty miserable yesterday during the last 3 miles, and I think I only made it because it was cloudy AND I had a tailwind.

I'm going to REI today to test some out!

The Lounge meeting people in real life that you've met online...done it? Jun 27 2009

I don't know if you're asking specifically about dating, but when I was (and still am) apartment searching, I met a LOT of people from Craigslist that were renting out rooms. Everyone I met seemed really normal and well-adjusted, although I only met them briefly. Some people also are a lot nicer online.

I also met a guy casually from Craigslist, but he turned out to be a lot less interesting and articulate in person than he seemed on the internet. It was quite disappointing.

Most people want to meet in a public place. A coffee shop is always the go-to. I have met some people at their houses (only for renting!), but that was after a lot of email exchanges. I don't think I would meet someone casually at their house....

Fitness How good is swimming for exercise? Jun 26 2009

Original Post by larsa000:
Something to keep in mind with swimming too is that your heartrate tends to be about 10 bpm slower than if you were doing the equivalent intensity on land out of the water.

um, what? Explain to me how this works. Ask any swimmer if their workouts are "easy." I do, however, agree that it's not easy to lose fat while swimming, just because you eat back so many calories. You do gain a lot of muscle, though.

In my opinion, it's the best exercise. But I might be biased.

I know of all the reasons why we hate huge portions. I know of all the reasons why I shouldn't eat huge portions. Yet, when I'm at Chili's and I get that monstrous mud volcano dessert (or something) I thank whatever gods there are that I get to stuff my face with it.

And it is so good.

The Lounge Has anyone ever been on accutane? Jun 17 2009

Original Post by moonikins:

pegamoose, have you been to a dermatologist? If not, go to one. A good dermatologist will try other treatments first before prescribing accutane.

Yeah, I've been to a few, all back in high school. The first one prescribed Differin, the second one Retin-A. There were some combinations of antibiotics too, but I hate the idea of taking antibiotics so casually. My skin would clear slightly with the antibiotics, but as soon as I ran out it always got worse.Of course, then the doctor would prescribe a new set so it looked like he was doing something of good.

However, my limitation now is that I moved to a new state (new coast, actually) and my health insurance expires in a few months. My new insurance won't really pick up until a month after that, so I have a kind of lag time before I could see a dermatologist. I'm thinking of trying the OCM method until then, and if I haven't seen any improvement I'll call a dermo.

Thanks for the replies! It helps to hear experiences (the good and the bad) about the treatments available.

pavlovcat - How are you liking the oil cleansing method? I will try it as soon as I get some of the specific oils, and I'm hoping I don't have to go on accutane, given the tight regulations of your liver and all that. I know it's effective, but I don't want to end up worse than when I started.

marsheroyth - I can agree that the acne makes me keep people away, and whenever I see a picture of myself that really accentuates it I can't even look at myself. I don't think it really affects my weight, but it stops me from going out sometimes.

I've actually heard that tea tree oil is pretty effective.

Of course, I would agree that it sounds pretty counterintuitive. I have extremely oily skin; it seems like I only have an hour after I wash it before I start getting all greasy, sometimes less if it's hot outside. Would you still recommend it for my skin type?

I read the thread but I don't know what proportions of which oils and in what concentrations would be effective. What is your procedure? How often do you do it? And, how long does it take to be effective? Thanks!

Fitness Knots in back and shoulders.... Jun 05 2009

Haha. Maybe I should have added that I am currently single, with no access to a willing masseur.

I'm wondering if there are exercises or stretches that can help get rid of them? I can feel the tightness when I'm standing or sitting, but I can't reach most of them by myself.

My brother is 6'1". I am 5'2". We get into endless arguments over who has it worse when traveling. On the one hand, he has to cram himself into an airline seat and duck just to reach the seat in the first place. On the other hand, my feet don't touch the ground when I sit. Try that for a 6 hour flight. Also, the lumbar support and headrests are designed for taller people, so they end up pushing me out of alignment and making it more uncomfortable.

I could go on. And I agree about the countertops.

Fitness Unholy Silicone Monsters... Please help! Apr 26 2009

First of all, great that you're using silicone! Latex caps are cheaper, but wear out faster and also have this great tendency to rip out all of your hair.

I never start out wetting my hair, just putting it in a bun and using hair clips to get my bangs out of the way. Wet your cap and place the front part on your forehead, making sure its secure on your skin, then use both hands to pull it back over the rest of your hair. It might actually help to have a friend help you the first few times so you get an idea of what it's supposed to feel like.

I always put my goggles on the outside too, just a matter of preference really. Also so I can take them off easily if they're too tight. Hope this helps!

I love the look of a guy's butt in some nice little form-fitting boxer briefs. I don't know if they're technically boxer briefs because they're tight and pretty short...if you've got it, work it!

Super delicious. Heh.

I can't stand thongs on guys or girls. The idea of having fabric up my butt just makes me shudder, plus lots of guys have hairy butts.

The Lounge Obama’s Mandatory Public Service Plan? Mar 31 2009
12:23 (UTC)
27

As a midddle and high school student, I was required to complete 75 hours of mandatory community service before I could graduate.

The state of Maryland required it, but I think it may not have worked as well as they wanted because a lot of kids never did service and ended up graduating anyway. Plus the fact that there was so little communication between where you worked and where you turned in your hours made it difficult for those kids that actually did volunteer.

The Lounge Graduate School Interview? Mar 16 2009

6

When I interviewed at one of my grad school choices we were sat down with a lot of the admissions committee. I wouldn't really call it a group interview, but everyone was asked to participate, and we all went around answering their questions. A lot of the questions (in my experience) tend to center around why you chose this particular program, and what your eventual goals were.

I was also terrified about my interviews, but just remember to stay honest and relaxed. You have to show them a real passion and interest in what you'll eventually be doing, especially if it's a field where people get burned out.

Good luck, and I'm sure you'll blow them away!

Fitness How fast do you lose muscle when not weight training? Mar 13 2009
11:11 (UTC)
2

When I had mono, I probably lost about 5 pounds of muscle over the span of about 4 weeks. It could be more, could be less, just because I may have added some fat as well because of the whole....inactivity thing.

I've always thought because muscle is so metabolically active the body will try to get rid of it in times of severe deficit and inactivity.

The Lounge Work and school... can you do both? Mar 12 2009

While I think it's admirable that you can manage so much at the same time, my advisor once said to me that school should be your job.

She was talking about grad school, but at the same time it's still applicable. I took the fall and went for the loans over working, knowing that while it would suck, it's still an investment and not worth my sanity or health.

The Lounge Tattoo Barbie - what's your take? Mar 09 2009

I think kids will end up doing what they want to do regardless of the influence of a little piece of plastic.

I was never any more obsessed with stick-on tattoos than any other kid, yet now as an adult I ended up pretty heavily inked and pierced. It was a matter of personal choice and an appreciation for the way beautiful art can look on the human body.

That being said, I think the tattoo choices for Barbie are sad and already gender-specified, with some fairies, rainbows, and flowers. How is that art? That's just a stereotype.

uhhh, can you please define jacked?  Innocent  i don't think i've ever heard that term!

it can mean a lot of different things, but i suspect she means she was using cocaine.

I thought she meant her car was stolen.

Ha! This is what happens when you let threads run wild! I'd always assumed that if I were using cocaine I'd lose like 20 pounds, but I've never really seen the need to look like Lindsey Lohan. And in that time, I also got my car hubcaps stolen, but not the car itself.

For clarity, I started lifting seriously and gained (what I keep telling myself) about 10 lbs of muscle.

I was probably around 115 when I entered college. I'm around 125 now (4 years later). However, I also got jacked in those years, so I doubt 115 would be possible for me anymore.

Well, the piercing itself will hurt a lot, but the part I found the most painful about the process was the clamps.

They were really tender for the first few days and I was really gentle with them, they healed up just fine.

If you get them done with barbells initially they'll probably snag less than rings.

Motivation One day, I will Feb 15 2009

Good idea!

One day, I will:

Go back to Australia and see the rest of the country.
Have my entire body covered in tattoos.
Know what to say to my high school coach, who is the reason I am here right now, and I will be able to thank him.
Find the right person for me.
Get into grad school.
Graduate from said grad school with my PH. D.
Forgive you, but that day is not today.
Forgive myself, and that starts today.

I promise I will never again:

Base my self-worth on the image in the mirror or compare myself to people I know I do not want to be.
Have my heart broken.
Believe that the Hollywood ideal is any sort of real.
Be this broke.
Live in upstate New York.

I am somewhat embarassed to admit:

I used to bite my toenails as a kid. Now, I've somewhat lost that flexibility.
