| Weight Loss | If I reached my ideal weight I would... | Nov 19 2009 04:38 (UTC) |

As a recovered anorexic, I would like to state that weight loss is not the only way to become the person you've always wanted to be. When I had an eating disorder I used to think, "When I lose weight everything will be wonderful. I'll be so much more confident... I'll always look beautiful... everything will be perfect!" Yet I found that I was searching for the non existent holy grail. I lost weight, but I didn't find confidence. I was the same person I'd always been, but with a little less fat on my bones. Granted, I did gain confidence from looking hotter and achieving my goals, but it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. Confidence comes from within, no matter what weight you are. |

HUGE compliment! She basically implied that your weight loss and exercise routine produced results similar to that of professional liposuction! Of course, the compliment may have been unintentional. Is she normally a bitch? Are you rich? Did she ever see you working out or hear about you dieting? Did you lose the weight very suddenly? Does she normally say things like that? It is all circumstantial. Yeah, I could see how she would be saying, "She could never lose the weight on her own, she had to have had lipo! That fat pig... MWAHAHAHA!!!" But then again, she may have just been theorizing. |

“The price to pay for quitting exercise is higher than expected, and this price may be an important factor in the obesity epidemic affecting Americans,” http://www.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/L SD-irregular-exercise.html I want the freedom to know that if I get swamped in work and I can't, I won't gain weight. It's beyond, "You're just not burning as many calories, so eat less." |

A bit more of the skinny shoes scenario. I am in between 8 and 8.5 on a particular pair of ballet flats, and I am trying to decide which way to go. I've lost 10 pounds so far and I plan to lose 30 more. |

Yes! It's basically calorie cycling, but over time your high calorie days become longer. You start with 3 high calories, 2-3 low calorie, 5 high calorie, 2-3 low calorie, 9 high calories, 2-3 low calorie, and so on and so forth until you eventually reach 30 high calorie, 2-3 low calorie. The theory is that your metabolism will rise to the challenge. |

I'm not an ad. I don't GO TO Curves, I just follow their diet. On my own I run about 2 miles at the gym 3-4 X a week. I'm being totally serious! This is AWESOME! I'm not trying to sell you anything, because I'm only a 16 year old high school student. You don't even have to go to Curves, or buy the book, I just want more people to know! I went through years of yo- yo dieting which eventually lead to an eating disorder. I feel like if I had had this, I might never have had an ED. |

If you are looking for cheap, organic food, there are some farms out there that will let you pick your own fruit and/or vegetables. Not only do you get the exercise of picking fruit on their fields all morning (it's actually fun for the whole family), but the prices are significantly lower because they do not have to pay for labor, distribution, and packaging! I do not know where you live, or if you are located anywhere near one of these farms, but I will attach a link to show you an example: |

| The Lounge | worst insult you ever got because of your weight.... | May 07 2009 04:20 (UTC) |

When I was about nine my father called me into the computer room. He had been doing research on the internet about childhood obesity, and when I arrived he turned to my mom and said, "Do you think we should check her for rolls of fat?" Over the years my little brother has also called me "piggy pot pie". When I complained to my dad, he told me that I could just call him "skinny bones" back. The worst thing about all these insults was that I was never overweight. I sat perfectly at the 50th percentile for weight of kids my age and height. "What causes an eating disorder?" (my mom) "Let's not waste time trying to figure out what caused her eating disorder. It is impossible to know." (therapist from the UCSF eating disorder clinic) |

| Weight Loss | Losing weight = less confidence? | May 03 2009 05:17 (UTC) |

I'm eating 1800 calories, so it's not a starvation diet by any means.
Before I used to think, "Oh, that person will never want to be friends with ME. Why even try?" so I just wound up acting exactly like myself, because I wasn't out to get their approval. I still don't wear nearly enough Abercrombie to be considered a "hot girl", and I've only lost about 10 pounds so far, but just being closer to that image makes me feel like it's someone that I could eventually turn into. And I don't want that. I do feel more self conscious. |

| Weight Loss | You could lose weight if you really wanted to. | Apr 29 2009 01:06 (UTC) |
15 |
My original post had more to do with yo-yo dieting than making excuses for oneself in order to avoid trying at all. I find "you could lose weight if you really wanted to" comments MOST offensive when they are applied to yo-yo dieting, because the dieter CLEARLY wants and tries to lose weight, yet is unsuccessful. My particular case is a bit interesting. I was stuck in starvation mode at 1,000 calories a day, nearly fainting, and not losing an ounce. I told my dad that it was possible I wasn't getting enough to eat, maybe that was part of the problem. He said I was a liar, and that there was no way I could be eating 1,000 calories a day. He practically laughed at me, "Trust me, you're eating enough! Your problem is that you eat too much. All you have to do is watch your diet." Then I would cry, because I WAS watching my diet! I practically had an eating disorder! Then he would reply, "You know, one day you're going to get serious about your weight, and when you really want to, you'll lose weight like (snap) that!". So, yeah, I got SERIOUS. I got a full fledged eating disorder! I went through recovery (I only lost 15 pounds with the ED, and gained 25 back before my body finally settled). Now I'm eating MORE, 1800 calories a day, and I'm LOSING weight! |

Alright, just as the above posts say, you look like a super model. Seriously, http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_average _weight_and_height_for_a_runway_model Even though you look like a model, and are far thinner than the vast majority of the population, I can understand the idea of wanting to look YOUR personal best, so I will do as very few have done before me and actually answer your question. If you have been working out, but eating 1300 calories a day, it is unlikely that you have gained muscle. You are not eating enough. I plugged your height/ weight/ age into a caloric needs calculator, and it says that you should be eating 1600 in order to lose weight. It's possible that you're encountering the dreaded..... STARVATION MODE! |

It sounds like your boyfriend has a pretty bad sense of humor. I can't judge because I haven't heard his jokes, but by the way you describe them, they sound retarded. Randomly insulting someone isn't really a "joke", per se. If I were you, I WOULD make fun of him for being insecure. That's what he's doing to you. If he makes fun of you for being fat, then tries to get you to gain back the weight you lost, then it's obvious that he isn't making fun of you because he wants you to lose weight. He's making fun of you because he likes to make fun of you. |

I believe the Youtube poster when they say that 98% of all diets fail, if by diets they are referring to DIETS, such as the Liquid diet, the Master Cleanse diet, the Three Day diet, or any other sort of diet that only allows you a grapefruit for breakfast and a salad for dinner. These diets are impossible to maintain long term, and can really destroy your metabolism, and in some cases your health. If they were, however, referring to a slight CHANGE in diet, i.e. the replacement of cookies with fruit, KFC with a baked chicken breast, Coke with Diet Coke, then I would say that they are... not making any sense. I agree with all posters above: we can all make small, simple changes, count calories and build awareness about what we eat, and lose weight and keep it off. |

| Weight Loss | Metabolism question! | Apr 15 2009 02:02 (UTC) |
3 |
I was on a similar type of diet for about two years. Initially I lost 10 pounds and was very satisfied, so I logically decided to start eating 1500 for maintenance. The problem was that eating at such low levels altered my metabolism, so I began rapidly gaining weight on only 1500 calories per day. I regained all the weight that I had lost within a month. Then, at my original starting weight, I had to eat 1,000 calories just to maintain. I did this for a year, and tried to break free again. I ate 1500 calories, and rapidly gained 10 MORE pounds. I eventually ended up developing an eating disorder which brought me down to my original original weight, the one that I was before the whole madness began. Then I gained 20 pounds in treatment for my eating disorder. After the last 20 pounds, I finally have my natural metabolism back. It's taken me over two years to recover, and as everyone says, I gained back MUCH more than I lost (lost 10, gained 30). I did all this when I was very young (13 years old) and stubborn. I'd been dieting sine I was 9, and when people told me that I'd never be able to lose weight and keep it off, I just saw them as ignorant fools who underestimated my willpower. Not that way at all. It took me about two years to understand that the reason many people gain back all the weight they lost on a diet is not just because they returned to their "bad habits" as some diet products may have you believe, but because dieting, especially EXTREME dieting, lowers the body's metabolism to the point that your body is fighting to regain that weight. If you diet sensibly, as calorie count suggests, you won't have to fight your body in order to keep the weight off. |

| Weight Loss | Being called "fat" makes me want to overeat! | Apr 12 2009 21:47 (UTC) |

Jessicar! My dad is JUST like that! He'll tell both of us that we're too fat, but once we lose 10 pounds we're suddenly too skinny and he's shoving ice cream at us! I really think that the eating disorders my brother and I deal/ dealt with are directly related to my father. They say that an eating disorder is about control, and I think that he's trying to control his children through food. Nothing will satisfy him. Just like anorexics will never be "Thin", despite the fact that they can become grossly underweight, my dad will never approve of my brother and I, no matter what we weigh. |

I only ate two piece of the chocolate, before they hauled it away. My brother ate the rest. 12 pieces of chocolate, 100 calories a piece = 1200 calories. The only problem with my "he'll get fat" theory is that my brother has also developed an eating disorder. He lost 5 pounds this week! I don't know how he did it... perhaps he just threw the chocolate away and showed me the empty container to piss me off. |

I suppose that eating chocolate is a rather ineffective way of getting back at my brother. A few hours after that incident my dad accused me of eating all the cereal and walnuts in the house. I think I'm just the family scapegoat for missing food. Still infuriating, but I didn't feel driven to overeat. My reasoning: If I didn't eat them, someone else did, so it's in my best interest to take the blame for it because then the person who REALLY ate all the cereal and walnuts will continue doing so, and will in turn become fat, meaning that I can make fun of THEM! |

I eat whatever I want, but I count my calories very closely. Just today I had a burger and some chocolate, yet I feel no remorse whatsoever. That's the benefit of not caring. I eat 1600 calories on days that I don't work out, and 1800 calories on days that I do. My workout basically consists of running 2 miles and then burning 100 calories on the elliptical, rowing machine, or stationary bike. I'm losing on average a pound a week, but it's coming off in odd intervals. I'll lose two pounds one week, but then hold steady the next. |

| Health & Support | Revelation! | Apr 11 2009 18:48 (UTC) |

I'm not just talking about, "Oh, Lindsay Lohan is so thin, I have to be that thin too." It goes beyond the media and magazine covers plastered with anorexic looking starlets. Through my eating disorder, I set my own standards. I didn't aspire to look just like my favorite hollywood celeb, I just wanted to be THIN. That magical THIN that we all strive for had eluded me for too long, and I would do ANYTHING to get it. The quest for thin is inside all of us. A sort of policing voice. The idea that if you stuck to your diet you were "good" this week, and if you didn't you were "bad". Losing It talks about how the corset of the Victorian age never really disappeared. It was replaced by dieting, the inner corset. I think that these ideals set out by the media ARE attainable. The only problem is that in order to achieve such levels of perfection, women must waste vast amounts of time, energy, and money. This is how society keeps them down. There is less time for women to focus on who they are as people. Less time to develop character or focus on advancing their careers. |

| Health & Support | For those who have been diagnosed with anorexia | Apr 11 2009 08:29 (UTC) |

I was not technically diagnosed with anorexia, but EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified). I was at UCSF because I was not getting my period. I didn't know that I had an eating disorder, so I didn't see any correlation between my period and my dieting. They had been running test after test for nearly a year, but no one really sat down with me to talk about my calorie intake. I weighed 133, but I was eating 1,000 calories. Basically, years of dieting had run my metabolism into the ground, so I was only eating 1,000 calories to maintain. I was trying to lose weight, which required near starvation. The day I went, by the time of my 3:00 p.m. appointment, I had eaten: literally 2 forkfuls of rice, a piece of dark chocolate. I knew it was sort of wrong, but I just pushed my conflicted feelings away. When they finally thought to ask, "How many calories are you eating?" I burst out into tears. The eating disorder team at UCSF was able to infer from my reaction that I had a problem. They gave me a meal plan and that was that. |

| Weight Loss | What to do when you find out your scale was off...by 13 pounds?!?! | Apr 10 2009 17:50 (UTC) |

A similar thing happened to me. I ended up resetting everything on calorie count. I was off by 3 pounds, so I just added 3 pounds to all of my weigh ins. It still reflects my total loss, but it's more accurate. My goal weight is still the same, so in the end, when I get there, it will be nice to know that I lost even more weight than I originally planned. It will feel like an even bigger accomplishment! |

Thanks for your input! Mel_e_mel, I can't really get away, because my dad is overprotective/controlling to the extreme and all of my relatives live across the country. I'm almost 16, thought, so I only have another 2 years. I try to get away for the summer when I can. Joannarexia - I think I will swallow my pride and try complimenting my brother. If he thinks he looks good the way he is, then he probably won't be as motivated to lose more weight. |
