I think the Irish expression that is hardest for others to understand is "grand." "Grand" can be used to mean literally anything from "acceptable" to "amazing" depending on the context. The inflection makes a huge difference.

"Decent weather?" "Ah sure bit cloudy but grand yeah y'know"

"Decent weather?" "Graaand yeah, cracker of a day!"

I was in Berlin over the summer with my best friend and we ended up going on nights out with Scottish, English, German, Australians, and loads more. None of them seemed to be able to tell what we meant by "grand" because the context changes in every sentence.

Another one that seems to amuse non-Irish folk is "deadly", which is used as a very positive adjective. "It was great craic yeah, deadly night."

Yeah I agree with sabbitha, don't mention her weight at all - even in a nice way. One of my best friends was bulimic for several years. After she admitted it and started getting better, she told us that any time we said "you look great" or "that outfit is gorgeous on you" she took it to mean that her secret binge/purge sessions were "working", i.e. making her look better... so she kept doing it.

  • Poor grammar and spelling.
  • Bad manners, especially basic ones. How hard is it to say 'please' or 'thank you'?
  • Lying of any kind. My last boyfriend constantly told tiny, pointless white lies, for no apparent reason.
  • Slow walkers. I know I walk ridiculously fast, but is it really necessary for you to take up the whole path while dawdling at a rate that would make a snail look like an Olympic sprinter?
  • Morning people who insist on speaking to me when I can barely work the kettle. I cannot manage a functional conversation until I've been awake for at least an hour and consumed at least two mugs of tea. Why can't you chirpy folk accept that and just leave me alone?!

Man that's gotta hurt. You will feel better eventually, and you will find someone who is right for you. In the meantime, call your girlfriends and make the most of their support. Head out for cocktails and some serious dancing, rent a girly movie and share a bottle of wine, or hit the shops. Total cliche, I know, but it works! Hope you feel better soon x

I don't know, but I would imagine that you would need to eat a few small meals or snacks during the night. Even lack of sleep aside, I'm always hungrier when I'm in "study mode" - just because it's not physical strain doesn't mean it doesn't require extra energy. I think it's better to just eat at maintenance when exams are looming.

I totally understand and sympathise (I'm going through college finals at the moment) but I really would try and squeeze in as close to eight hours sleep a night as possible. Even apart from the calorie-counting issue, your assignments etc. will be worth better grades if they weren't written by a sleep-deprived zombie!

Hope that was some help - best of luck with the assignments anyway! x

Although, actually, now that I think about it - if I'm about to get my period (maybe one or two days before it starts) I can get VERY severe cramping after an orgasm. It feels like very intense period cramps and I have to get up and walk around, doubled over, until it subsides. It sounds insane, but I always just accepted it as a sign that my period was on its way (they're incredibly irregular, so I have to be constantly on the look-out for any warning signs!) I was so content to use it as a warning sign that it never even occurred to me that it could be caused by the PCOS... hmmm! Now I have something to ask my doctor about next time I go...

I have PCOS and have never had any problems with pain down there - neither has my oldest friend who suffers very badly with endometriosis. Sorry to say it honey but I think it's more likely to be a trauma-related psychological issue.

The one that stands out is that when I was a child it was a family rule that I had to try every food offered to me. If there was something I didn't like, I was encouraged to try it again a few months later. And I was never allowed to order from kiddie menus. Because of this, I have a real passion for food and eat literally everything! There is actually only one food that I really dislike (olives.) I have completely inherited my parents' love of food and cooking, and it's a huge part of my life - I'm 22 now and beginning a career in food marketing!

The Lounge Favorite Book? Or author? Apr 21 2009

Sooo hard to choose! I think, if I really had to pick just one, it would be Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering Heights'. Really, though, I have loads of favourites. I have a weird habit of re-reading past favourites on a yearly basis, and the most thumbed-through would be:

  • 'The Hobbit' and the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy
  • All six of Jane Austen's novels ('Sense & Sensibility' in particular has a seriously cracked spine)
  • 'Alice in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll
  • 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte (and of course the reminiscent 'Rebecca' by Daphne Du Maurier)
  • 'The Catcher in the Rye' by J.D.Salinger
  • 'The Bell Jar' by Sylvia Plath

The fact that I'm hopelessly addicted to Tudor history means that I read a lot of factual stuff, biographies and such, but it also means that I snatch up any new Phillippa Gregory book as soon as it hits the shelves.

I also loved the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy by Philip Pullman and the entire C.S. Lewis 'Chronicles of Narnia' series.

I could keep going, but I should probably wind it up now before this post gets as long as a novel!
