Original Post by chrissy1988: Yes you are correct all around. I was losing at the rate you stated, I have lost a decent amount of muscle mass, and my metabolism did slow down. I have increased my calories now to compensate for that so I will be losing at a slower rate on my way to my next goal. I actually already increased my calorie intake about a week or two ago after I realized how quickly I was losing. I did gain back weight at first but I stuck with it and I started losing again and that brings me to today, down to 170. I used to do 1500 calories a day, and I increased that to 1860 because that is my BMR. I plan to add in excersize soon, and I will eat more calories on those days to compensate. |

Without knowing all the details I can only guess but here are a few thoughts that ran through my head. 1) Yes a 1-2 month plateau would skew the number 2) however if you are short that number may not be terribly far off 3) This provides averages over time, so unless you have been exercising 6 days a week for the entire 108 days that you entered, the numbers will not reflect what you burn on days you exercise, but instead an average of what you burn over the entire 108 days. You can try running the calculator for a shorter period of time, after your plateau and see if you get better results. If that time period after the plateau is really short the numbers may still be off though, I recommend 4+ weeks of data to go off of. |

No problem my pleasure, I am glad you commented actually. I would like more people to see this and take advantage of my work before it gets buried in the forums never to be seen again, and your post brought it back to the front. :) To everyone else, if you like the calculator, please comment so that more people will have a chance to see it and use it. |

Original Post by reigh7: Water loss can effect the number you see on the scale in the short term as your water weight fluctuates. This calculator is not for people who have been dieting for a short period of time, as you stated the numbers would not be very accurate. This is meant for looking at averages over a longer period of time (I recommend 4+ weeks). The longer period of time helps to reduce the margin of error due to small gains and losses from water weight and other factors. |

Original Post by cferrari: Thanks =] This is actually my second time dieting. I started the first time last year and did great I lost 43 pounds. But before I got all the way to my goal I met my current girlfriend. And I stopped excersizing and we cooked together alot and didn't make very healthy choices. Next thing I knew I had gained back 24 pounds. But now we have been together for a while and things are settling down and its easier to make healthier choices and we still cook together but now with calories in mind. And I am almost back where I was when we started dating, and this time I am going to go all the way until my goal, just 13 more pounds. As for figuring out your burn rates, for best results use the calculator I made: http://www.ignte.com/cc Without knowing all the details though, it looks like you have an average daily deficit of 331 calories, which equates to .66 pounds of weight loss per week. If you use the calculator it will help you figure out some additional information like the estimated time to reach your goal. |

I have updated the calculator. Now it is optional wether or not you want to enter your Average Daily Calories Eaten. If you don't enter it, no big deal, it was only used to show how many calories you burn a day/week total, instead of just the deficit. This should make things easier for those of you who stagger your calorie intake. Or do not have a steady number for whatever other reason. |

maybe just make a deal with yourself that every chip, every bite, whatever you wanna break it down to, equals one push up or sit up or whatever excersize. |

Thanks I am glad you like it. The php on this is VERY simple. I did most of the math when declaring the variables, and there is a single If Then statement to figure out if the weight loss rate is healthy or unhealthy. |

Original Post by newdays18: yes that will make a difference, I would do the math using only your most recent calorie intake numbers, and only using the amount of weight you have lost since you started eating that amount. So if you started eating 1800 calories 1 month ago, use 1800 in your math and only enter in the amount of weight you have lost in the past month. By the way, I am putting the final touches on a online calculator to do all of this math and more automatically so you may want to just wait, I will post it later tonight. |

Yes it is too early to get any numbers of value for you, especially since its your first week and you will have lost alot of water weight. However I did the math to satisfy your curiousity. 3183/day. Try it again in a few weeks to get some real numbers though. I will put together an online calculator for people soon. |

Another fun thing that I did after I got my daily burn number and figured out my deficit, is figure out how many pounds I wanted to lose and on which day I would reach my goal if I continued at my current deficit. And then played around with different deficit numbers to see how it effected my goal date. As of right now I would hit my goal in 3.8 weeks at my current rate, although I will probably change that because my deficit is too large. |

And I am not saying that the Calorie Count tools are useless either. You have to start somewhere and this site has given me the tools the knowledge and the community to get where I am today. As for 'using the tools with a degree of common sense'. Well yes you are right, and I consider myself to have an abundance of common sense. With that said, sedentary matched my lifestyle perfectly, and on days that I excersized above that description I would enter it seperately in activities. In order to get CC to show a burn rate equal to what I have actually been burning at, I must set it to "very active" which is not at all a description of my daily life. As far as wether or not the numbers on the scale are showing fat loss vs muscle loss vs water loss you are right. That is the reason for doing this at 45 days instead of just a week later, to smooth out some of those water numbers and get a more accurate result. Another consideration is for people who have lost ALOT of weight loss, like 30+ pounds. Is is more useful for them to enter in just their past 6 weeks of weight loss and calorie intake to get a more recent number at their newer weight. (since you burn more calories the heavier you are, we dont want your old higher burn rate numbers tainting the math for your new ones). |

Thanks I am glad someone else found it useful. I found it to be very interesting in my case because calorie count says I burn 2230 calories a day, but I actually am burning much more than that, despite the fact that "sedentary" still fits my lifestyle on most days. I figure this is the most accurate I can get without buying a heart rate monitor and wearing it all day long. I am a web programmer by day, so if enough people like this I will put together an online calculator to make it easier. |

I am guessing that CC is subtracting out the number of calories you burn normally in whatever length of time you excersized, and is only adding to your burn meter the additional calories burned on top of what you would have burned sitting down the whole time. However I would like some confirmation of this from somebody who knows for sure. I like to eat what I burned while excersizing so its important I know how many additional calories I am getting. |

Thanks that makes sense now. So here is what ive got going on, let me know what you think. Every other night I go down to my association gym, I do a mixture of different excersizes, 1) I start off with 20 sit ups using this fairly comfy sit up bench they have 2) then I do 20 reps of 30 pounds using this weight machine where the weights are stored behind you attached to pullies. You push the bar away from your chest. 3) then I do 20 reps of 20 pounds using the same machine, but pulling down from above me to my lap then I get on a stationary bike for about 10 minutes to let my abs and arms take a break. then I repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 and call it a night. |

thanks for the advice. I looked up the proper way of doing crunches and to my amazement, I certainly "feel the burn" the next day. It doesnt really look like much excersize when you watch someone else do it. One part of your reply confused me: "On thoses days i do either cardio or have a rest day, if the cardio follows one of my lifting dasy i make sure it's "light" steady state cardio so i don't undo the work i did in the wieghts room." What can you do to "undo" the work in the weight room? |

Wow, I guess some parents don't realize that the things they say could very easily be the cause of bad eating behaviors. Not much you can do but try to ignore them and vent on here everyone once in a while I guess. |

I eat a couple bags of edimame a week now. I have only prepared it one way, and it is amazing. I boil the frozen pods per the directions on the back (6 minutes). I put a little bit of wasabi in a cup with low sodium soy sauce and mix up the wasabi into the sauce thoroughly. I dip the soy pods into the sauce and then I shell the beans into my mouth and discard the rest. You can skip the wasabi if you dont like spice, but thats just crazy.. *edit* I got curious about how other people cook theirs and went to youtube and found this recipe, alot more involved then what I normally do but it looks amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub45H07xX7I |
