The Lounge Any Atheists? Jun 15 2008

I'm an atheist as well. I don't know if it's really necessary for us to have any kind of organization (although there are some); however, I sometimes wonder what the general public would think were people to be aware of just how many of us there are.

Foods Which is worse: Trans Fat or High Fructose Corn Syrup? Jun 07 2008

I'd say trans fats, without a doubt. The main reason the US uses so much HFCS is because it's cheaper to do so. While I myself detest HFCS, there's still some debate over whether or not it's actually much worse than, say, cane or beet sugar.

Trans fats, on the other hand, are more saturated than butter. That alone is enough to scare me away. I'm sure others will have more to add.

kashicat: Just to be even more certain, I took a third test this morning, and it also came up negative. I haven't been experiencing any other pregnancy symptoms either (I'm not nauseous, my breasts feel perfectly normal, etc.). I certainly wouldn't be opposed to more testing, of course, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the clear with regard to possible pregnancy.

melkor: Believe me, I'm definitely concerned with the amenhorrea. I have made an appointment with the campus medical clinic, but the soonest one I could obtain is nearly two weeks from now (I find the entire medical system around here to be ridiculously bureaucratic). All I can do for now is wait, unfortunately.

Thanks so much for the replies, everyone. I really appreciate the advice.

lucho: Yeah, I really need some better resources around this campus. I have a measuring tape, but that's it. I know that my abdominal region definitely increased in size after all those workouts, though; even my stretch pants were feeling tight. Being an apple can really suck.

I wouldn't trust most restaurant salads as far as I could throw them.

If you're burning more calories, you need to increase your caloric consumption to compensate.

You should still be burning about 500 calories than you're consuming.

I'd treat this as good news; I'll take any excuse to be able to eat more.

I personally prefer CLIF Bars. I don't understand why Luna costs more for a smaller portion. CLIF Bars fill me up for about three to four hours.

Weight Loss Anyone else here have the 5-10 lb. weigh loss goal? Apr 30 2008

I'm nineteen years old, 5'5", and at my last weigh-in, I was around 124-125 pounds. I'd like to be down to 114-115, which was my average before college came along. Dang, I gained weight quickly.

I'd also just like to gain knowledge of the right kinds of foods to eat (wow, I used to down those 400-calorie Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts as a snack) and become fitter overall. With my current workout regimen of three or more days of cardio and at least two days of resistance training a week, I'm actually more active than I was high school.

I have an apple-shaped body, unfortunately, and my waist was a little over 28 inches the last time I measured. My hips are about 35 or 36 inches. Depending on what kind of pants they are, I can wear pants ranging in size from 2 to 8. It can be quite frustrating.

They give us some nutritional information here at UCLA, but I don't entirely trust it (they haven't gotten around to logging trans fats, and some portion sizes are rather ambiguous). Most of the time, I go with food that can also be logged with this website.

What I wouldn't give to be able to cook for myself. Alas, I'd have to rent an apartment just to have my own kitchen.

I can't stand funnel cake myself. It goes back to when I was thirteen and bought one thinking it was actual cake. I wasn't particularly thrilled to discover that it is, in fact, fried dough with powdered sugar.

I could have just eaten a doughnut.

As for other carnival food, I prefer the savory items. I had a great (but way overpriced - although I wasn't surprised) gyro at the Renaissance Faire this past Saturday. I love meat pies as well. I wouldn't buy kettle corn for myself, but if someone wants to share, I'm all for it.

Nowadays, almost all processed foods taste like salt to me.

I can hardly believe I used to like Kraft Singles as a kid.

I eat pizza with a knife and fork.

I also arrange my M&Ms into groups based on the social classes in Brave New World.

Mo's Bacon Bar, by Vosges. It's a 41% cacao milk chocolate bar with smoked applewood bacon bits and smoked alderwood salt.

Also the bacon doughnut from Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, Oregon. It's a maple bar with two strips of bacon on top.

You wouldn't think those combinations would work, but boy, do they ever.

This is probably the wrong website to mention those, though :\
