Thanks so much for all the replies!! floggingsully - I wasn't doing any exercise when I could eat 1800-1900 calories without gaining. Haha that's what I was so hung up about.. I guess I'll just work my way up slowly then. If anyone else is reading this, you're still welcome to voice your opinion - everyone here is so helpful!! |

Don't deprive yourself during the week. Eat what you want, but in small portions and work that into your calorie count. Depriving yourself always makes your body crave more forbidden foods and eventually you'll succumb and binge, which does you more bad than good. Okay, I sound so nice and sensible but that's kind of what I suffer too, except that I don't starve myself during the week. Actually you really sound like me.. Sometimes I'm unable to stop eating in the mornings too, and snack on bars, cookies, bread.. until I have more or less eaten my full calories for the day and am bursting full. I'll want to purge as well, but can never do it properly. This happens when I'm up early and am at home with nothing to do. So my advice would be to go out, take a walk, go shopping.. anything to keep you away from the food at home. Or try to sleep in.. another thing I have trouble with because for some reason I cannot sleep beyond 8am even when I pull an allnighter. I can sleep at 5am and wake up at 8. So I stretch, go brush my teeth, eat a slice of bread and an apple, then sit down at the tv and put in my DVDs. When I get sick of my DVDS I call a friend or neighbour to go out shopping. that takes up a few hours without eating. We'll have lunch (healthy, not fast food) and walk around some more. Well basically just try to find ways to occupy yourself. Go to the library, walk the dog, clean up your bedroom.. anything to prevent yourself from thinking about food. Lastly.. if you feel like you really want to eat more than you should, you can always drop me a pm or something. I'll.. make you go take a walk or something, and stay away from the food. =P |

Really? I've never had any trouble doing it.. what kind of hoop did you use? Heavier hoops are easier to twirl, and burns more calories too. If you used the superlight bean one then I'd understand why it dropped, it drops for me too x) but if you used the heavy one, then I'd say it probably differs with the individual. When I was first learning I did have some trouble though.. but with practice I got better and now I can twirl a water hoop for ages, like even up to a few hours or so. Call me crazy but I tried it and my waist hurt like anything the next day. =P I experimented yesterday by trying to teach my 9-year-old cousins to do it. They couldn't get the hang of it at first, but when I got them to turn their bodies in the opposite direction of the hoop they managed to twirl it successfully and kept it twirling for a good five minutes before complaining they were tired =P Okay starting position: you hold the hoop with your hands, right? Hold the hoop around you with your arms straight in front of you at the sides. Then turn your body to the right and move your arms in the opposite direction. Your body should be leaning to the righthandside with your arms towards the left. Then swing the hoop, hard, to the right and move your waist back and forth as the hoop hits it. I don't know how to explain the way you move your waist, I'd say it's just instinctive. Try it and let me know how it goes? (: |

| Fitness | Starting to run but having terrible lower abdomen pain??????? | Jun 14 2008 13:43 (UTC) |

When you feel the stitches hit, try slowing down and jogging on your tiptoes. It sounds weird I know but when I was running my 1.6km physical test in elementary school I used to get stitches all the time. My teacher told me to run on tiptoes and the pain actually did go away. I can't remember if it comes back when you go back to running normally but it sure helped me pass the test. =P I don't know if you actually burn more calories running on tiptoes but it takes more effort (i think) so no harm giving it a try. =D Also probably don't drink water right before you run. Give it a good half hour after you drink water (you still have to drink to hydrate yourself) before you start running. I find when I drink water less than ten minutes before running the stitches come more often than not. Good luck! |

If you're not trying to lose but simply lead a healthier lifestyle, by all means eat the same calories as you used too! I envy your high metabolism btw. Mine's dead slow, thanks to stupid starvation mode. But I can't blame anyone but myself. Good luck! And you made a wise choice about leading a healthier lifestyle! =D |

Hey that's what I (stupidly) did too. The starving myself part. Mine wasn't that extreme.. I'd eat three meals a day but tiny ones and go to bed on an empty stomach, actually relishing the growls my stomach made. When I started eating normally again after school started and I was exposed to more food, I gained like hell. What can I say.. starvation mode. But now my metabolism's sped up more than I can imagine.. when I actually started eating till I was full again. Now trying to up it further with drastic increasing of calories to give the metabolism a good shove in the ass. I also lost all the weight I gained back when I started to eat again, not by eating less but by walking more and basically moving more. And yeah, I was still reading up to the part where you talked about your new CC goal. 6% body fat is a bit of a mission impossible, lol. But you're doing great and who cares if no one notices, you do. So do the scales =D |

You sound like me! I have trouble getting to sleep, am trying to maintain and am very hardly active. I stress over tiny things too! I eat relatively healthily with the occasional indulgence here and there. I'm only 15 though, and am 5"0. So short >.< I'd love for anyone to share on how to get to sleep at night though. At times I don't fall asleep till nearly 5am. It's annoying. |

I think I've heard almost everywhere that aspartame when exposed to high temperatures ie baking, breaks down into a poisonous substance. Not sure if this is true or not, but better safe that sorry, right? So try to avoid using aspartame sweetened diet coke. Go for Splenda (sucralose) sweetened coke instead. Aspartame is also said to slow down metabolism while Splenda has absolutely no effect on our bodies. So I guess Splenda would be the better choice in any situation =D |

I'm a dancer at 5"0 and I dont really have your problem but maybe you could try hulahooping. The movement of your waist added to the resistance the hoop provides helps to slim the waist/define it further. Apparently with a heavy hoop you can burn up to 110 calories per 8 minutes! |

I've heard that eating junk/fried food makes people feel sluggish. Apparently that's why my school's tennis coach bans the tennis members from eating junk food before practice. I don't know if this is true but maybe you could try abstaining from fried food for a period of time. Eat grilled instead, and try to get your daily servings of fruit and veg. Instant noodles are kind of bad for you since they're deepfried before packaging, contain loads of sodium and msg (in the seasoning but you dont use them do you. Oyster sauce isnt much better as it still has sodium and msg, only less, and isn't particularly nutritious either) and have very little nutritional value. Get a healthy takeout if you dont want to bother with cooking from scratch (like Subway) or make some sandwiches like I see you've done =D |

Just tried baking a single serving today and it was a success =D 1oz devil's food mix and 1oz diet soda, microwave for 1.5 min on high. What's strange was that my cake rose and then detached from the sides of the glass cup I used to microwave it. And I didnt spray with nonstick or anything. Does this usually happen? I'm kind of an amateur at this, zero experience lol. |

Holy cow it works! I tried it out cos I was baking a mini cake for my friend's birthday and it wasnt exactly pretty but tasted amazing. I mixed Coke Zero with Betty Crocker Devil's Food and stuck it in the microwave for about 2min on high. Comes out kinda soft but hardens once it cools. It does rise a lot though, watch out for that and don't fill the dish too full. No trace of Coke at all, instead super fudgy and stickysweet. Just as I like it =D It can kinda be made pretty with instant sugarfree Jello pudding as icing I guess. didn't try it though cos there's no time, I used Waitrose Belgian chocolate sauce as topping instead. Added a few Maltesers as decor too. Highly caloric but blehh it's my friend's birthday =DP |

GOD I am so with you on this. I wish nuts were zero-calorie. if there was one thing I'd choose to be invented it would be zerocalorie nuts. I cant stop eating almonds/cashews/macadamias once i start on them. I'm a picker, so sometimes i'll just go over to the jar of it and grab a fingerful (two, three) and jump around to some song afterwards because i'm feeling guilty. It's so annoying!! |

| Foods | Authentic Chinese Food | May 31 2008 13:55 (UTC) |

Oh and btw, one mantou can be up to 500 calories depending on how its fried. Most of the time yeah, 500 calories. No sheeete, I used to love that. Its true about the Chinese not liking unrefined grains, my grandma only ever eats white rice, white bread and noodles made with white flour. Egg noodles occasionally. Actually egg noodles aren't bad at all, just that wholemeal would be better yeah. Not many Chinese restaurants actually serve brown rice.. well at least not in Singapore. Maybe if you dine in Chinese restaurants you could ask for less/minimal oil to be used. Some sauces are also killer, like sweet&sour sauce. I think you could cut out a hell lot of calories just by skipping sauce. Dim sum can be good and bad. Like I said the charsiew buns are full of fatty meat unless you make them yourself with purely lean meat. I guess that's possible though I've never tried it. However steamed dumplings ie. wontons, shrimp dumplings, potstickers etc are usually relatively low calorie. So feel free to indulge. Just don't get fried dumplings, please, PLEASE. |

Trust me, authentic Chinese food can also be as high in calories as Chinese-American food. I live in Singapore where Chinese food can more or less be considered authentic, and it's definitely killer if you're counting calories. Take sweet&sour pork, for example. it looks so innocent sitting there steaming on the plate but what you dont know is that one serving can measure up to 1000++ calories. My grandma makes fried rice with Chinese sausage and egg too and it's delicious but bleeaaah high in calories. Just try not to eat too much of it. Of course stuff like steamed wontons and shrimp dumplings can be low in calories but don't fall for the charsiew bun; one bun alone is 200 calories or more. And it's not even that fantastic. To me, anyway. Steamed white rice does have its nutrients though. I love it with teriyaki/oyster sauce, or with pork floss. Actually I think it's pretty worth the calories, but then again that's according to personal preference. And NEVER EVER touch pork or Peking duck pancakes. Those are lethal and they aren't even nice. Fatty too. nehneh. |
