Young Calorie Counters Tell me....700 calories a day ... Oct 10 2008

Plain and simple: don't starve yourself. Eat when you're hungry and eat nutritiously, don't eat too many fatty foods, consume plenty of vitamins and minerals, etc. You're not eating enough if you're hungry and all the online calculators in the world are still approximations.

I'm not going to tell you some melodramatic story about when I ate 900 calories for a month and I turned into a rake with no hair (although my metabolism did grind to a stop and my weight loss efforts were useless despite all my exercise, my body thought I was in famine). I'm not gonna say "YOU SHOULD EAT -insert scientifically backed number- ITS THE MINIUMUM FOR TEENS AND YULE GO INTO STARVATION MODE"

Sometimes I feel like 1800, sometimes I want 1200, sometimes I'm tired and not hungry and I just want 800. Your body won't quit growing and eat its muscles if you simply listen to what its saying. Playing sports usually equals needing more fuel.

I'm between 5'6" and 5'7" and 158 lbs (size 10). My frame is technically large, but I've still got too much fat. My goal is to have a nice stomach and slimmer legs/arms/everything....140 by Christmas. I have no idea how I'll look, this is the littlest I've weighed at this height.

They're not overly noticable, but probably will be after a few pounds.

I read it in 7th grade, because my teacher said I would like it, and they had that Simpsons episode.. I found it a bit slow, although the story is a good one.

Animal Farm, for the record, makes me laugh.

Young Calorie Counters Girls: How Much Do You Eat at Dinner? Sep 30 2008

Usually by 6pm, the time I decide to have dinner, I've consumed 600. Then I'll have 400ish in meal form and 200-400 in snacks depending on what I've eaten. Recently I've been trying to eat more during the day as opposed to later.

edit: Oh, and as for what I eat, it's usually rice/potatoes/some kind of grain with vegetables, a protein, and a salad. Sometimes I skip out on the protein, or I have one at lunch, or whatever.

@direwolf- I read your post, and yeah, there are two sides to every story. Sometimes people do seem quite holier-than-thou when they talk about their friends who are trying to lose weight, but it's a totally different horse if that friend just refuses to take any suggestions and is being really really annoying.

Agreed. I hate feeling guilty, I also don't usually carry cash and rejecting their eager little faces pierces me.

@ coffincritter: That happens to my mother all the time, she gets pounced by kids hawking chocolate bars...the ones with boxes of chocolate dipped almonds etc usually seem more credible.

@OP: While you may know that energy drinks = not very good for weight loss, your friend doesn't. While you may think that 100 calorie packs = not good for weight loss, she eats them. It seems like your attitude is "I figured it out, now its her turn". And the flawed thing with that is: a. maybe you haven't figured it out  b. why don't you tell her what you know? *easier said than done, I know

I hate being around people who are trying to lose weight. I feel like they're sizing up my food and mentally making suggestions. It's pretty ugh.

Leftovers! I love leftovers! You can turn them into new meals : )

I have the clean plate guilt too...I've been told I eat quickly. The only solution I've found is to make or take less food (the former for me, since I cook all my own stuff like a lonely single person). Which is difficult. Also, keeping hydrated and slowing down to eat and remembering food is supposed to be nourishment, not a daily allotment. I keep reminding myself, if I'm still hungry there's more in the kitchen. For the past two days, its been working great.

My sister, who is slim average, sometimes forgets to eat at conventional times because she's just not hungry. I suppose food became a habit for me rather than a need, hence why I'm overweight.

Yeah, I know some people like that as well.

Very recently, I've been employing a "don't eat unless you're hungry"/"don't eat just because you feel you should" rule with myself, and it's really helping. I'm one of those night eating people, so when I come home, I consider if I'm actually hungry or if its just habit. The days where I've gone over my calorie limit are always the ones where I feel bloated/overstuffed. I think there's a connection.

Young Calorie Counters Teens: what did YOU eat today? Sep 23 2008

breakfast: 1 orange and a vegan peanut butter cookie (figured i'd get it out of the way while i had the whole day to burn it off)

lunch: cookie again, 2 pink wafer cookies (...yeah. same logic, one cookie remained and the wafers were too cute)

after school: 2 more wafers, diet coke, i tried my sister's pad thai with fish

dinner: 1 cup rice, 2tbsp vegetable oil, 1 tomato, some zucchini and onion.

snack: some sugary gum, a couple hard candies

while i met my calorie target, i'm a bit ashamed that my breakfast and lunch were cookie based. but i'm mastering rice, and it was quite good- right portion and everything, yay!

I can cook really well in under 30 minutes (like Rachael Ray!), so I prefer my own meals.

Also, imo they're a bit expensive, so I only eat them when they're on sale or something. I don't think they're that terrible, compared to other things a person could eat, but at the same time there are better lunch choices. My only qualm is the sodium, but like I said..it could be a Hungryman.

I ate Lean Cuisines for like two weeks while moving and I'm still alive. I'm especially fond of the pasta ones, since pasta is the one thing I don't ever cook because I'm afraid of it. : )

I've had some very vivid dreams, and recently I've had bulimia relapse dreams. Which are absolutely terrible, because I wake up more panicked than the ones about whatever else.

I don't have any suggestions, but...good luck. I hope your dreams quit being awful and frightening.

There's nothing I can't stand about CC. It keeps me on track. However, I feel judged for being so young. I'm overweight. I've also had ED issues, and am still dealing with them. I'm here to improve my perception of health while achieving it. I'm 14 and I "shouldn't be worrying about calories" etc...which doesn't change the fact without this forum, I'd be worse off.

Everything on here that's mildly irritating just represents that we're all learning, all the time. I joined almost 6 months ago and I'm much smarter especially in the fitness department, and I know that 1000 calories a day and an hour of bicycling isn't going to turn me into Erin O'Connor.

The Lounge who knows that you count calories? Sep 23 2008
03:54 (UTC)

My best friend knows I count calories daily, she keeps an eye on what she eats as well, and a couple of my other very good friends know I've had food/self esteem issues and from my random nutritional knowledge, have probably assumed. My mother has probably assumed since I know a lot about calories, weight loss, etc. My father and sister know I'm health conscious (and looking to lose a few), but I don't know if they're aware that I track my calories.

163 lbs (up 3.5 lbs).

which can be chalked up to the fact i've been eating terrible and pre-menstrual weight gain. blah. i feel like a loser.

Nah man, don't feel like a loser. We all have those weeks. I'm up two pounds this week because of my own actions, not even because it's close to the time of the month for me. I drank almost a quart of rum the other night, and the day after I drink all I want to do is eat. But never anything good, it's got to be fatty and greasy and all around as bad for me as possible. In the past week I've gone to an all-you-can-eat Chinese place, ate a medium pizza to myself, had some sort of potatoes in cheese sdauce with bacon bits, had two donairs (which is just a bunch of meat and garlic sauce on a pita. Oh, with onions and tomatoes though, thats good right? oh, it did have cheese on it though..) Ate half a medium pizza, had poutine..

I just felt like I needed to get that all off my chest. And while I'm paying for it with the weight gain, it was all fun, because I was with my friends and we had a few laughs, so I don't think I would change it if I could.

Yeah, I had fun too. : ) Even though there were DEFINITELY moments where I could've handled myself better (I had pad thai, cookies, cookies, chocolate, pizza, a slushie, all sorts of crap), it's a learning experience, and here is the consequence. Besides, I learned a "don't make more rice than you want to eat yourself because if you do you're setting yourself up to have too much" lesson. Valuable.

We'll both do better this time....I had a great day today, so seven of those and I'm good for next Monday.

I'm in Ontario looking at the gas station across my street. $1.13 and a half cent a liter, or $4.29 a gallon. That's actually 10-20 cents cheaper than it's been recently.
