Weight Loss 1200 Calories is working for me. Nov 24 2009

I say if its working for you and its reasonably healthy, then go for it....everyones metabolism and body works a bit different and some bodies just flat out go against the grain.

What I experienced with low calorie diets is that the lower you go, the lower you have to maintain.  So doing a 1200 calorie diet for an extended period may mean that your maintenance caloric intake is cut to 1500 calories.  If 1500 is ok and fulfilling, and you think that you can reasonably keep within that range after you reach your goal, then I say your program is just fine.

You're always going to get arguments on whats acceptable for weight loss.  Some will tell you to up your calories, some will tell you to drop carbs, and some will tell you to zig zag your intake.  Ultimately its up to you to find out what works best.  Do whats working until it doesn't work anymore (without going to extremes), then switch it up and do something different.  Bodies love stabilization which is why people plateau.  So as long as you're switching it up and keeping it on its toes, you'll see results.

Fitness How do you calculate the 3500 calories needed to lose 1 lb. Feb 04 2009
22:07 (UTC)

Just remember...there is sooooo much human error when trying to get this equation right....like you didn't factor in this or that when counting the calories or your calorie burn for an exercise session was an estimate....the goal is to get close to the 500 kcal deficit a day....and because of water retention and metabolic factors that are unique to each person, you may not see the scale move per week, or you might see sudden drops in weight...it just depends...its really a trial and error process to get it just right so that you consistently lose weight without destroying your metabolism or plateauing.

Fortius is right though....the people they show are already in shape and probably have around 13-10% body fat...their "before" pictures where taken probably late in the day after a big meal with maximum amount of water retention....their after pics were most likely taken after a day of dehydration and a light weight work out to pump up the "goods"....you see, their pilot program didn't involve just yahoos they grabbed off the street...these where most likely tony's friends or friends of friends that worked out on a weekly basis....the reason the guys legs are so underdeveloped compared to the rest of their bodies is because they probably didn't put much emphasis on them in their previous training program like all meat heads  (too busy having chin-up competitions with tony)....as a guy, I know when I hit the weights back in the day, legs were much neglected....its just a guy thing....look at the biotches...dreya webber has super thick legs...she probably has a penis too from all the extra testosterone injections....all I'm saying is that this, like any program is a tool to help me get closer to my work out goals and something new to mix up the same ol same ol....I have no delusions of looking as buff/ripped as joe bavino or any of those other d-bags...but the program will produce solid results as long as you do your best and forget the rest.  Yes to do the program properly requires extreme dedication and will most likely take up about 2 hrs of your day (factoring in moving the furniture, fixing your recovery drink...etc etc) and some money if you plan to go the non-adjustable weights way...6 days a week is a lot to put up with tony and his goons and knowing that most people give up after the first month is only going to make hitting day 90 even sweeter.

I like the bands for some of the exercises....I bought some gold gyms walmart specials and they suck balls....so I would buy quality ones from a real sporting goods store if you wanted to go that route.....the bad thing about adjustable weights is that you'll have to push pause and change them...unfortunately the workouts are so varied that two dumbbells won't be enough, it'll either be too much for some moves or too little for others and the workouts are already averaging on an 1.5 hrs...so that's why I do a mix.

Fitness Extra Calories Equals...Muscle or Fat? Jan 23 2009
17:11 (UTC)

Also...its not 100% that every extra calorie is converted to muscle if you're working out with weights....the truth is that when bulking (consuming more than maintenance) you'll most likely put on fat and muscle....it sucks but thats the way it be.

Im with you wes.....I hate having to pause and change my weights....so I use the bands for any exercise where tony says you don't need a lot of weight....front straight arm extensions etc etc....I do like the free weights when doing the 8-10 business where you have better stability....hopefully it is just a small strain....I had a similar incident this past summer and I thought I could just work through it....I ended up sidelined for about 4 months....at least thats what I blame my laziness on ;-)

yeah some of the weight lifting could be dubbed overkill........do you really need to be doing 16 reps of anything?...but i guess its a combo of muscle endurance and cardio work...So I typically use the bands for these type of workouts and dumbbells for anything that needs 8-10 reps......who here hates phifer scissors and leg climbers!

Whats up dude!.....I started about 3 weeks ago...had a bad week last week so I'm re-doing it ..so program wise, this is my 3rd week since I'm not counting last week...Like you, I lost a ton of weight, then got burned out for a few months, started gaining again, then got P90X to get me back on track.  Anyways, I'm with you if you want to chart progress.

Weight Loss Lost too much too fast? Aug 21 2008
18:07 (UTC)
3

man ol' man....you're not going to like what ya hear....yes you probably lost weight to fast...what this means...is that a significant portion of your weight loss came from muscle....also...you're still at the upper end of your BMI range..this is why you're not totally shredded and ripped like you probably imagined you'd look at 165 (I was the same way with similar stats)....I'd say kick up the weight lifting....add a few more lbs of muscle....then cut another 10lbs of fat and you'll be looking sweet....take it slow this time...cut the 10lbs over the coarse of three months...let your skin and body adjust to the loss while filling it out with some muscle.....You can probably be looking like a fit, lean 155lb sex machine by the start of 09' then you can cruise into 2010 boning every biatch along the way.

Fitness Stubborn body fat Jul 24 2008
17:55 (UTC)

I would take a break from "cutting" and focus on a bulking period for about a month...this would mean eating around 2200 cals a day full of protein and healthy fats (+omega 3, 6, 9)..and non processed carbs...Break this up into 5-7 small meals throughout the day to get your metabolism stoked...your work outs should consist of mostly full body exercises that serve a duel purpose (i.e. lunge+military press)...take a break from the jogging and crunches...try HIIT on an elliptical trainer to re-challenge your body...after doing this your body will be a fuel burning high octane engine and when you go back to a cutting period....your fat will melt right off.....the deal is that you can't just diet forever because your metabolism eventually adapts and caloric burn slows down.

Fitness Incline vs speed on the treadmill Jul 15 2008

I agree with cjarose....and I'll add that you should also jump on the elliptical trainer and stationary bikes as well.....even though these machines may seem easier than running on a treadmill....you'll be surprised by the extra weight loss results, just from mixing up the cardio.

Weight Loss Loose Skin After Weight Loss? Jul 14 2008
18:07 (UTC)
2

A good test to see if its loose skin or fat would be to pinch the skin on the back of your hand...if what's hanging off your body feels thin like this, then its loose skin....if you notice some substance behind it, that could be described as "jiggly"... then thats fat that you can still lose through exercise and dieting.

Fitness how could this have happened?? Jul 03 2008

I'm with cat-girl.....you're not gaining muscle yet...but I'll add this...when going from no weightlifting to weightlifting, your muscles are going to start sucking in water and this is going to be added to your normal water weight retention, thus creating this weight spike...your muscles may appear larger during this time, but as far as dry muscle fiber added is concerned, its not going to be much.

I"m 27.. 165lbs...5'10"...I think I'm hovering around 12% BF...I'm nowhere near ripped....I thought for sure when I hit 167, that I'd be jacked....not the case....so I'm aiming for 157 and see what that looks like.....I say go for your goal....you'll be surprised and disappointed when you hit your goal and realize that what you thought you would look like and what you actually look like aren't even close.
