That's how I've lost 30+ pounds so far.  I really do enjoy it, too.  Except nights like last night where I had a wicked head wind.

This sounds like my kind of group.  My one year anniversary in this program is tomorrow and I've dropped a net total of a little over 30 pounds.  I had a couple of bad months last fall, got back on the wagon the beginning of this year, and have fallen off for the last month.  I've had some bad eating days, including last weekend where I just tore up everything in site during a weekend out of town.  My physical activity has consisted of the occasional bike ride and a few hockey games.

I don't need any more of these lulls in what I am trying to do.  This latest setback has been disappointing as I have gained back about 5 pounds.  My plan is to eat no more than 2,450 calories per day and to ride at least 50 miles per week.

I just wanted to get that out there so I can get myself back in gear.

There's some stuff you can buy, one brand is Zicam and the other is ColdEeze.  You can get it at any drugstore and probably at most supermarkets.  It's a combination of zinc, vitamin C and a few other minerals and vitamins that boost your defenses.  YOu take them as prescribed at the first sign of a cold.  ColdEeze makes one that's basically a cough drop and, in fact, I'm taking them right now since my throat has been scratchy.  It won't make it go away totally, but it will lessen and shorten the symptoms.

Thanks to you both!

I managed to meet my calories today with almost 100 to spare.  Had a small breakfast, a big lunch, and salad for dinner.  Tomorrow will be tough, but as long as I stick to my snacks and stay away from that cookie bin I'll be fine.  I'll have cookies on Tuesday ;)

Weight Loss Eating out Sep 01 2008

I've been eating out a little more lately because of my schedule.  I believe this is why I've had a bad go of it this month.  When I eat out, I tend to eat whatever looks good (just this once) and it adds up...quickly.  Went yesterday and would up eating fish, corn, turnip greens, and macaroni and cheese.  I could have done without the macaroni and cheese, but the rest of it gives you a good idea.  It still was about half of my daily calories, so the thing I would suggest is to not eat out whenever possible.  I'm going to have to adjust my schedule accordingly to be able to control what I'm eating.

150 pounds. That is absolutely incredible!  And I appreciate you giving us motivation and just reminding people like myself that it can be done.  I had a very bad month this month, so this gives me confidence.  Before that I was averaging 10 pounds per month in loss.

There's really no proverbial magic pill.  Here's what I would do.  Drink a lot of water.  This will help flush impurities out of your system.  Eat lots of fiber, at least 30-35 Gs per day.  This will also help to flush that food out of your system.  Try to consume as little sodium as possible, and this definitely includes cutting out sodas.  And just combine this with healthier eating.

I don't know that 3 days is enough time for concern that you're not losing enough weight.  If you're pushing 7-10 days, then I would re-evaluate your approach.  Right now, I would suggest going close to, but not going over, your limit of calories each day.  And throw in your exercise.  The weight fluctuations are a funny thing.  Tomorrow, you may be down two pounds for all we know.  Just keep plugging away.

I love riding my stationary bike too, Steve. (((EDIT: to say, I understand you ride a real bike -- I just am not coordinated to do that --yet, but I like biking too and we have that in common) congrats on all your success so far! ( :

I think being consciously aware of all my cals in and burned is 90% of why it has been so painless and "easy" this time. Something finally clicked about the science/math behind weight loss for me finally, at age 30. YAY -- you'd think being a teacher, I might have been smarter, but no. lol It is good when things make sense, eh?

anyone else have a "click" moment recently?

I used to ride the stationary bike quite a bit, but I just couldn't do it anymore I was getting so bored.  I stumbled upon a bike website where people documented their journeys across the country on their bikes.  That got me into buying a new bike and just taking 5-10 mile rides around the area.

I definitely had that click moment right after I joined the site.  It was right after I turned 30 and decided that I was no longer comfortable with how I looked, how I felt, and I didn't want to move on with my life in an unhealthy manor.  I'd like to be as healthy when I'm 75 years old as my dad is.  The whole thing just became so simple, so elementary.  I've lost 31 pounds so far and haven't looked back.  I've had my bad days, but I've been able to get back on the horse and continue on every time.  And this has held my attention for four months, which is an incredible credit to this site.

Wow, I'd like to get that speedometer.  Sounds like it can do just about anything.  I just have a no-frills one that does speed, mileage, time, and cumulative mileage.  But for now this one will do.

Bike riding is really fun.  I'm riding right around the same speed you are on a mountain bike.  I'd like to get a road bike with bigger wheels eventually.  Tonight I rode 8.625 miles, rode 38 minutes and 53 seconds, with an average speed of 13.31 mph (which I had to calculate).  I'm hoping with more weight loss, I can increase my speed even more.

Hello all, my name is Steve.  I'm 30 years old, no kids, and I started this on April 19th.  My SW was 286, my CW is 255, and my GW is 175.  I work full time at least 50 hours a week, so my exercise time is at night.  I ride by bicycle 4-5 times a week and go for 30-60 minutes with some occasional longer rides on Sundays and when I have extra ambition.  I still get to eat foods that I actually like, the only thing now is pacing myself and controlling the calories.  Logging those numbers daily makes for an interesting challenge.

That sounds pretty good in terms of exercise and food intake.  Good balance.  My guess would be to see how you do in 7-10 days.  If you don't achieve more than a pound or two of loss, try to throw in a little more sugar and protein to shake things up.  In other words, maybe some non-traditional "diet foods" just for your metabolism.

Hi,

I would suggest that you follow the weight loss plan(s) here on this website.  You can adjust what you want to do based on your level of activity and how much you want to lose.  I've found that I can eat whenever, but the key is finding low-calorie foods and keeping a balance in your diet.  You just log your meals once or twice a day, and log your weight periodically.  And, you can also log any exercise you do.  I've lost 31 pounds so far and I've been on here since mid-April.  Good luck!

31 pounds!!!!!!!!!! Well done!

You know, it may just be my thoughts - but I think people who have LESS weight to lose - get noticed faster than those of us who have over 50 to lose. Like one of my co-workers who is about 5'10" and looks fit and trim just lost 15 pounds. He is so thin looking now. I probably noticed after 5 pounds.

Yet, I'm 5'8" and have lost 14 pounds. I think the only person who has noticed is my fiance' (other than myself, of course).

Way to go people! I'm so excited to get to that point of saying, "I've lost 31 pounds!!!" Yay!!Sealed

Thank you!  My next object will be 40.  20 will be a big step for you.  Keep up the good work!

That makes some sense. I've heard from doctors that heart health is 1/3 lifestyle, 1/3 hereditary, and 1/3 unknown. So, by that logic the figure could be as high as 66% instead of 50%, assuming the best case scenario with hereditary and unknown.

You've lost 40 pounds on your own?  You're right in thinking you don't need her.  You've done quite well on your own.  Just keep doing what you've been doing, keep logging your calories and your exercise, and you'll be fine.  Use this program as your trainer, and you'll be fine.  You're throwing your money away.  Kick her to the curb.

Welcome.  I was in the same boat as you when I got in touch with this site.  If I saw food, I ate it.  This site will go a long way towards keeping you honest.  One thing I've done a good job in remembering is telling myself, "I'll eat that tomorrow," when I have a craving for something I know is going to be a lot of calories.  The only problem I'm having is balancing the diet a little more (i.e. eating more veggies and fiber).  Still, I've managed to lose 31 pounds since April 19th.  And I could be further along if not for being lax on my calories from time to time and so many rainy nights that keep me from riding my bicycle.  Basically, the key for me has been not going over my calories and exercising 30-60 minutes a night 4-5 nights a week.  When I do that, I have had success.

Just keep up, don't lose interest in the site.  In fact, make it a hobby, coming here, logging calories, exercise, and getting into the message boards to compare notes with others.

I may have been thinking of the wrong ant.  But that's similar to what I had in my apartment.  I had to spray under the fridge a few times, but I haven't had a sighting in over a month.

I didn't know about the boiling water thing.  That seems to make sense, and I'll try that if I ever have a recurrence.

Try the 100 Calorie Packs made by Nabisco or the 80 calorie packs.  They come in a variety of foods like chips, crackers, and cookies.  Eat them slowly and one at a time.  That's what gets me through the afternoon.  Also, I eat trail mix sometimes, too.  You can measure the right portion easily if you have just a small measuring cup.

Lately, I've been eating an Easy Mac or Easy Italia microwave meal (220 calories), and one or two of the following:

-Fruit (75-150 calories depending on the fruit)

-Pudding (90 or 100 calories)

-Animal Crackers (100 Calorie Pack)

There are exceptions some days, but that's what I try to stick to most of the week.  The 100 calorie packs of the Cheez-Its, Chips Ahoys, Teddy Grahams, Animal Crackers, etc, go a long way and have really filled in well for my snack cravings.
