| Health & Support | Dizzy, Big Time | Apr 08 2009 14:50 (UTC) |

First thing, see a doctor about it to rule out anything serious. It might be something called Labrynthitis. Basically, it's vertigo caused by some unknown thing. It could be a fall or injury from the past or caused by a virus that bothers the inner ear. We all have crystals in our inner ear that keep our equilibrium steady. When something disrupts that, we get dizzy. My BF suffers from Labrynthitis, he gets so dizzy that he has to lay down, he says that the room seems to spin. All doctors can do for this is give him an anti-emetic, which makes him tired. The dizzy spell passes and he can go on with his life. It isn't life threatening, it's just annoying. But, do go see a doctor to see what is wrong with you. That's always the safest bet. Good luck, hope that you feel better! |

I cook brown rice in our rice cooker no problem but it does take longer. About 50 minutes vs. the 20 for white rice. I've cooked other grains in my rice cooker as well. It's not fussy about the grain, you just need to get the proportions of water to grain right. |

Any time your kidney hurt you should see a doctor ASAP. I had kidney pain about ten years ago, at first it seemed like a sore back but the next day I couldn't sleep. I knew it was my kidneys. I didn't have insurance and had to go to the emergency room. The took me right away because my kidneys were involved, I had an infection that required some serious antibiotics. They helped me with the pain pretty quickly, too. The last time (a few years ago) that I had kidney pain it was a stone. It was incredibly painful. Emergency room again. I was dehydrated, and that can cause stones. Have you been drinking enough water? I would imagine that you'd have to be ingesting huge quantities of cayenne to cause kidney pain or ulcers.Get to a doctor right away, you don't want to cause damage to your kidneys. Flu can make your lower back ache, feels like the kidney area but I don't think that a cold can do that. |

Was it cold out? I assume that it was because of you mentioning a hot shower after the run. It may be Reynaud's Syndrome, which I have. Usually it presents as your fingers or toes turning white, then red as they warm up. They will feel a little numb. Nail beds can look blue, like you described. Did some of your toes or the bottom of your feet look white-ish? It is a circulation issue, due to your extremities getting cold and the small blood vessels spasm and close quickly shutting off blood flow to the toes. I just experienced the blue nail beds recently but have had Reynaud's for years. Usually a couple of my fingers turn white when cold. I did some research and it suggested getting my thyroid checked. Reynaud's is a symptom of thyroid levels being off.
After I posted this I saw that you'd already posted that you were indoors. |

I bought the book at my grocery store last week and have been reading it. I did my first workout today. I didn't think that it would be that challenging as I am fairly strong and have used weights in the past. I followed the book's recommendation and I have to say, I'm whooped! The step-ups and prone jack knife are killers. I'm not so hot at doing push-ups, either. I'm looking forward to getting stronger. I am working out at home with free weights, bar bell and bench. I have a swiss ball and an elastic resistance band for rows. I can see that I am going to need more weights. I'm going to try to stick to the meal plan as well as I can. I already use whey powder in my morning kefir shake, which will be my after workout shake as well as breakfast. |

| Fitness | Six-Pack Abs: Unnecessary, unrealistic and possibly unhealthful for MOST women. | Jun 26 2008 17:11 (UTC) |
6 |
I can see my 4-6 pack clearly and I have a normal body fat % (over 20) for a 39 yr. old female. I've only lost 5.5 lbs recently and have done minimal workouts (mostly weight training for the lower body) and there they are! I build muscle easily and eat clean. Every body is different, not everyone can achieve a six pack. It is unrealistic for women (and men) to try to achieve extremely low body fat % if they are not pro body builders. My point here is that women do not necessarily have to have super low body fat percentages to see their ab muscles. I think that body shape has a lot to do with it. I'm a pear, I carry weight in my lower body and have a flat stomach. If you are an apple shape, it may not happen for you. |

| Motivation | Mood booster replacements | Jun 24 2008 19:19 (UTC) |

This is just my opinion but I think that the mindset of using food as a mood enhancer or boredom buster is not good. Instead, do something that actually will boost your mood like exercise. Even a little walk on a lunch break can have great mood enhancing power. I struggle with the same feelings that you describe and I find that when I exercise I feel much better (especially if it's something i'm doing outdoors) and will be much more likely to eat healthier foods as a result. Food is fuel for your body, not a replacement for happiness or entertainment. It took me a long time to come around to that, myself. If you can't afford the time during the work day to do a little exercise, focus on the time when you will be able to do it, after work or on the weekend. Plan on a weekend hike or bike ride and keep a motivational photo on your desk or in your work place. It's fun for me to have something to look forward to and plan for. It's a great mood booster for me to have anticipation. Eating something like a candy bar or junk food is instant gratification but only lasts as long as you are eating it. I've done it and find that toward the end of the candy bar, I don't feel so good about it any more. Usually feel bad about it. |

Maybe you could suggest an activity that both of you might enjoy doing together. Propose it to him in a way that simply suggests that you want to include him in this activity because having him there would be fun for you. Something that the whole family could enjoy, like hiking or walking, biking. Make a weekly trip to a new park nearby or a nature preserve. In time he'll begin to feel better and want to exercise for himself hopefully. By including the whole family maybe he'll realize that he needs to think about his health for the sake of you and the kids. |

| Weight Loss | how to not be hungry on 1200 calories/day | Jun 23 2008 17:20 (UTC) |
4 |
tngardengal-we are close to being twins. Just a few months ago I was at 125.5 (5'2"). Now I am at 115 lbs. I dropped the first 5lbs of water weight by exercising more and not eating excess sugar and avoiding processed foods. Watch your portions! I have been steadily losing the last 5 lbs over the last month by sticking to around 1300-1325 cal. a day. I am somewhat active at work but mostly sedentary at home. I try to work out a couple of days a week using free weights and about 20 min. of cardio on the elliptical. I think that 1200 cal. is too low for you. It'll make you miserable, too, or at least I would be. I eat all of my calories and eat smaller, lighter meals throughout the day. Some favorite low cal. meals (to also answer the O.P.s question), lots of veggies, fiber one cereal and almond milk, egg whites (one cup is very filling) and lately I love shirataki tofu noodles with red pepper, snow peas with a soy/peanut butter sauce. Yum! I got the recipe from here:http://livinlavidalocarb.blogspot.com/2006/03 /shirataki-recipe-to-inspire-your.html |

I recently saw a friend that I hadn't seen in several months. I almost didn't recognize her, she'd lost so much weight. When I asked what she'd been doing, she said "swimming!". She basically swims on her back, kicking her legs and doing laps. Since you first have get over your fear of the water, the effort needed to lose weight may not happen for a while. But as pointed out in an above post, using a kick board can be really useful. I applaud your decision to face your fears to learn to swim. It's one of the best full body, low impact exercises that you can do. |

| Recipes | Smoothies? | Jun 16 2008 15:58 (UTC) |

I make a single serving smoothie every day for breakfast. One cup of plain low-fat kefir (has protein and is a pro-biotic), one cup of fresh fruit, one half scoop of vanilla protein powder and one tbsp of agave sweetener. I use an immersion blender and mix it right in the drinking glass. Just stock up on the ingredients that you'll need and use an immersion blender. They aren't expensive. I know that when I've used the regular blender I've either made too much and then consumed too many calories, or if I try to put the rest in the fridge it kind of separates and ferments. Yuck! |

6-9 weigh-in-117 lb. 6-16 weigh-in-116 I actually hit 115 over the weekend, which is my short-term goal. It's TTOM and I had a little too much sodium over the weekend so maybe that's why it went back up. Edit: added info- I want to add that I checked my measurements this weekend and I've lost about 4 inches! |

| Weight Loss | Spice it up! | Jun 15 2008 15:42 (UTC) |

I love spicy foods, always have. I do find, however that the cleaner that I eat the spicier I want my foods to be. Some favorites: crushed red chili pepper in pasta dishes or eggs, red or green thai curry (hot!), sriracha red pepper sauce (very hot!) and I use pureed, canned chipotle peppers in everything. My BF makes a killer black bean/turkey chili and we use chipotle peppers to spice it up. We also order our chili powder from New Mexico (Leona's). It's way better than grocery store chili powder, not too expensive, either. Definitely not a bland chili! Eating clean is so important but lets face it, it can be bland. Spices and herbs can make it more exciting and keep us interested in the food. |

Congratulations on your commitment to getting healthy and living a greener lifestyle! More people should make such a commitment. I think starting slowly is the key to success. Don't try to change everything all at once or you might get discouraged. pgeorgian gave you some good advice, farmer's markets and perimeter shopping are good places to look for healthier food. I live in a smallish city and a while back I wanted to eat healthier, eat more local and help the environment. I found that we have a local CSA farm (Community Supported Agriculture). You buy a share of food that the farm produces and they deliver the share to the local pick up spot. The food is raised organically, is super fresh, is local and you are supporting a small farm by your purchase. Also, you get a lot of food for a very good price. I read a book this past winter that changed how I looked at the impact of my food shopping on the environment "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver. I highly recommend it if you are interested in eating locally and reducing the carbon footprint of food production/shipping. If you live in a city, walk as much as you can. You may discover small, independent grocery stores that have fresher food for lower prices. Ethnic markets are a great place to shop. Just beware of packaged foods as they often have tons of sodium in them. Good luck with your new lifestyle! |

| Health & Support | Probiotics | Jun 13 2008 14:26 (UTC) |

My probiotic of choice is drinking kefir every day or nearly every day. I tried Nancy's brand, which is fantastic but buying it at the store is expensive. I now make it after buying kefir "grains" online. I starting drinking kefir after reading about how good it is for one's digestive system and general health. I tend to get a lot of colds and I could certainly use the immune system boost. I feel great since starting the kefir. Since making my own smoothies I eat far more fruit than I used to and am getting my calcium. I add a little protein powder to them and sweeten with agave sweetener. It makes a great, healthy breakfast and keeps me going until lunch time. I've found that drinking kefir smoothies for breakfast has helped me lose weight. They help me to not overeat at lunch or to have sugar cravings. |

| Weight Loss | How do I get rid of it? | Jun 13 2008 14:12 (UTC) |

I do lunges with weights (dumb bells), squats with a weighted bar across my shoulders (working my way up to adding weights to it) and squats holding medicine balls. I also do split lunges-stand with back to bench, put weighted bar across shoulders and place top of one foot on bench behind you. Lower you body straight down by bending the other leg, making sure that your knee doesn't go beyond your foot. It takes a little coordination but this is a great exercise. You may want to start without the weighted bar at first. It's impossible to spot-lose weight but incorporating like these and the ones above will help you reach your goal. You will definitely feel that you've worked the glutes the next day! |

| Weight Loss | 5' to 5'2'' Girls: How many calories do you eat for your exercise level? | Jun 12 2008 14:49 (UTC) |

I'm also 5'2" and currently at 117 lbs, down from 125.5 lbs. When I first started CC I was eating around 1300 cal. I also set my burn meter at sedentary and log my activity. I do this because my schedule is erratic. I was working out 3x week, 20 min. cardio and weights. I lost 5lbs of water weight pretty quickly. My weight kept going down and then up for a few weeks and I tweaked my meters. I tried upping my calories to 1500 while still exercising and It didn't really change anything so I lowered my cal. back to 1300. Lately I haven't been exercising at the gym at all, just going for long walks and my work is pretty physical. I have been steadily losing weight, at least a lb a week for two weeks now. I think that it's beginning to stall so I'll probably hit the gym again and do my old routine again. I want to make sure that I don't lose muscle. Basically I was trying to lose as much fat as I could through diet alone and when that stalled do diet/exercise. I'm very close to my short term goal of 117 and if I can, I'd like to reach 110 ultimately. |

Try this tricep exercise, it's my fave. It actually feels like I'm working the tricep muscles. I used to use the machines but It felt like a waste of time. When I do these my triceps are screaming at the end and I often have to rub them out afterward. I have seen a noticeable firming of my underarm with these. Work your way up to heavier weights with this one, it'll hurt like hell if you start with too heavy a weight. http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Triceps/D BTriExt.html

I was interested in this topic. I don't know about wedding dress sizes but I wear a size 6 and I weigh 116 lb. right now. I read all over this forum where people weigh about 20 lb. more than me but wear a small size. I am a pear shape, hence the bigger size, I hate it!! I wear a sm/med in tops. My arms are very muscular so I wear a med in fitted sleeve tops. Otherwise I'd burst the seams like the hulk! |

| Weight Loss | Greek Yogurt | Jun 05 2008 17:19 (UTC) |
7 |
I find that greek yogurt is much thicker than other kinds. I like to cook with it. I have a recipe that I found on Epicurious that is a fave in the warmer weather. Take a pork tenderloin and butterfly and season it with salt/pepper. Mix up the greek yogurt, some cumin powder, salt, pepper and a tablespoon of olive oil. In separate bowl mix some canned chipotle peppers (I puree mine first with a stick blender) and smear a couple of tablespoons of the chipotle puree onto the butterflied pork. Roll up the tenderloin lengthwise so it looks whole again. I often tie it up with kitchen twine, it'll hold together better on the grill. Brush the yogurt/cumin mixture over the whole rolled tenderloin and let it sit at room temp. for about 10-15 min. You can refrigerate it too, for longer, maybe 20 min. This is to marinate it and let the flavors mix. Heat your grill (I use gas) and grill it until a meat thermometer says it's done. Cut the string off and slice it into 1" slices. It's quite spicy and totally delish. I serve it with guacamole on the side. Yum! |
