Since I grew up not eating meat, I can't say it was my decision, but I would't change it, and never felt tempted to eat meat, I'm grossed out by the sole smell of it.

oh yeah i definitely agree with you. i'm not totally clear on why i wanted to be one but i wouldn't change it for the world

giving up meat was easy.  it's the dairy that i'm struggling to let go of.  i know there are dairy-free alternatives to cheese & ice cream & the like, but it's so costly.

i agree except for me it's not the cost so much as i'd just miss them

According to Wikipedia: Deep-frozen stomachs are milled and put into an enzyme-extracting solution. The crude rennet extract is then activated by adding acid; the enzymes in the stomach are produced in an inactive preform and are activated by the stomach acid. After neutralization of the acid, the rennet extract is filtered in several stages and concentrated until reaching the required potency: about 1:15000 (1 kg of rennet would have the ability to coagulate 15000 litres of milk).

so basically there are chunks of calf stomach floating around in your cheese.

well, not quite that much, but, ewwww it freaks me out.

luckily for me, my best friend is vegetarian, and she inspired a few of our friends to go veg as well, around the same time i did. we call ourselves the "veg crew" (lol) and we get together about once a month or so for "veggie night". sometimes we stay in and cook vegan dishes, sometimes we go out as a group. it's nice to have a support system!!

that's a great idea! :] unfortunately a lot of my friends aren't vegetarian.

maybe i can convert them haha

this is exactly what i've wanted! my goal is 125 and I'm 135 as of today (and the week before..hah). june 14 is a litttttleeee bit too soon to be realistic for me. i tend to lose weight slowly unless i starve myself :[

so I'll aim for 8 lbs down- 127 by June 14th! :D

Health & Support do you log every day or estimate? May 06 2008
02:02 (UTC)
I log every few days, but usually not dinner, because it's too hard to count and remember everything I've eaten. I don't think this site is 100% accurate because sometimes it doesn't carry the same brand of bread or whatever you're eating so you have to log "commercial" or a different brand and it ends up being more or less calories than you've actually eaten...

So I decided to become vegetarian about 6 months ago - mainly for health reasons.  I am mostly vegan but I hesitate to call myself that because of the possibilty of hidden animal products in many things that I eat.  Plus, I still have leather shoes, purses, etc. that seemed silly to just throw out.  But, when I buy new ones they will be animal friendly!

The more and more I have read and researched on the topic, I discovered the being veg is also much more animal friendly, ethical, and environmentally friendly.  These are both topics near and dear to my heart as well, so they just sealed the deal!!

Wow thanks for replying! Your reasoning makes tons of sense to me [:

Ahhhmygod me too. I was about 138 for about 3 months (I'm 5'7"), and now I've dropped to 135. Back in October and during summer, I was 125-128 and had been for a year! I don't know what happened, but I had a huge weight gain in about November (Thanksgiving and Christmas food?) and it's just stayed on since then. ugh. A few months ago I got a virus and lost about 5 pounds suddenly and felt wonderful despite the fact that I was sick, hah. I realized that I really wanted my old body back and I decided I needed to lose some weight. Now my goal is 125, but I would be satisfied with 130. My only real goal is to look great in a swimsuit ;]] haha

Don't worry about a 3 pound gain. Everyone has ups and downs and pretty soon it'll be dropping back down as long as you're working to maintain it (which it sounds like you are). When you feel guilty, just make a plan to go to the gym or go for a long walk the next day- when you do it, you'll really feel healthier, not to mention thinner. Aside from this, you look like you're at a good weight to me :]

ps- Weight actually fluctuates a few pounds each day. for example you weigh a little less in the morning because you haven't eaten for like 10 hours.

First, I think this is a "how long have you been a vegetarian and why" thread not "let's debate vegetarianism" thread. It's also in the vegetarian forum, so it's not like we're going out to the mainstream forms and imposing our views upon you.

Thank you!
Can we please get back to the original subject now..?

If you have something to say about the food chain and why vegetarianism is hypocrisy, please take it to a different thread.

it sounds dangerous trying to lose that much weight in just a week. if you actually want it to stay off, you'll need to try a more long-term approach
